Clinton D. McDowell
OXFORD -- Clinton David McDowell, 66, of 112 West College St., died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Randolph County native and the son of the late Dallas L. and Alice Hoover McDowell.
He was a member of Pleasant Union Church and was retired from Cristex. He was employed at Currin’s Building Supply.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Chapel in Asheboro by the Rev. George McDowell. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro.
Surviving are his wife, Mattie Sue Simmons McDowell of the home; a daughter, Debra M. Easterling of Oxford; brothers, Trellis McDowell of Trinity, Lauren McDowell and Gregory McDowell, both of Asheboro; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro.
Elizabeth B. McKellar
ASHEBORO -- Elizabeth Brown McKellar, 84, of 907 Oakmont Drive, Asheboro, NC, died Thursday, November 30, 2000 at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday December 2, 2000 at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. W. Russell Ward Jr. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery.
Mrs. McKellar was a native of Oxford, NC and a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was former co-owner of Maple Grove Dairy with her late husband Thomas P. McKellar Jr. until her retirement in 1965 at which time she became a homemaker and part-time sales person for World Book Encyclopedia.
Surviving are her son, Richard A. McKellar of Wilson, NC; three brothers, Connis Brown of Franklinton, NC, Norris Brown of Durham, NC, and Leroy Brown of Huntsville, AL; 12 nieces, Sarah T. Parrot of Oxford, NC, Charlene Moss of Oxford, NC, Elaine M. Hicks of Oxford, NC, Cheryl B. Hawkins of Oxford, NC, Mary M. Strickland of Oxford, NC, Raquel Brown of Huntsville, AL, Michelle Simmons of New Jersey, Patricia Overton of Raleigh, NC, Carolyn Finch of Durham, NC, Deborah Gough of Henderson, NC, Joan York of Charlotte, NC, Yvonne Dickerson of Rocky Mount, NC; nine nephews, Ruben O. Johnie Seward
FARMINGTON, Conn. -- Johnie Seward, 81, of Farmington, Conn., died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in John Dempsey Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ in Manson. The Rev. Charlie Leath, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, James Caroll of Hartford, Conn., Willie Seward of Hartford, Conn., and Johnny Seward of Colchester, Conn.; three daughters, Gearldine McNear of Henderson, Carolyn Andrews of Windsor, Conn., and Mamie Judkins of Bloomfield, Conn.

Wilbur E. Williams, Jr.
HENDERSON -- Wilbur “Bill” Ellis Williams, Jr., 45, formerly of Henderson, was taken from his loving family Thursday, November 23, 2000. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Evelyn Williams. He is survived by his sister, Peggy Blalock, niece Beth Reavis, nephew Ellis, best friend Bill Parks of Wilmington, and loving cousins, aunt and uncle.
Bill was born January 16, 1955 in Henderson but had spent most of his adult life living and working in Cebu, an island located in the Phillipines.
Bill graduated in 1974 from Fredericks military Academy in Portsmouth, Va. He was Battalion Commander and President of his Senior Class.
Bill loved the sea, and his work and life were centered around this love. He was employed in the research area of Western Geophysical, Houston, Texas which enabled him to travel the world by sea. Bill was a Master Diver, and co-owner and founder of Parasail Asia Company in Cebu. He was at his home in Cebu at the time of his death.
We are grateful for his life, love of family and friends, and most of all his spirit of adventure. Friends are invited to join the family in a memorial service to be held Saturday, December 2, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel at Flowers Funeral Home in Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Pauline C. Burwell
RICHMOND -- Pauline C. Burwell, 69, of Richmond, Va., died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, in Virginia. She was a Vance County native.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church by Dr. C.B. Walton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Gladys Hargrove
LOUISBURG -- Funeral services for Gladys Hargrove, 83, who died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Mitchell Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Lilly officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mitchell Church cemetery.
Surviving are five daughters, Mandy Jones, Annie Hilliard, Lillie Epps, all of Louisburg, Carolyn Moore and Betty Hilliard, both of Raleigh; five sons, James Hargrove and Walter Hargrove, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Hargrove and John Hargrove, both of Louisburg, and Otis Hargrove of Wilson; 40 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Wake services will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday at Mitchell Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Ralph E. Peace
HENDERSON -- Ralph E. Peace, 52, 732 North Pinkston St., Henderson, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital, after a brief illness. He was a retired recreation director for the City of Henderson.

Emma Riley
HENDERSON -- Emma Riley, 76, formerly of Vance County, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, in Marietta, Ga. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.
Sam B. Strickland
HENDERSON -- Sam B. Strickland, age 66, a resident of 5291 Satterwhite Point Road, died Thursday night at Maria Parham Hospital.
He was a native of Nash County and was the son of the late Herbert G. and Annie Bryant Strickland.
He was a retired Insurance Agent of Western-Southern Life Insurance Co.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles Ray Anderson. Entombment will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Viverette Strickland, of the home; one daughter, Kay Strickland Phillips of Henderson; two sons, Donald G. Strickland of Henderson and Garland E. Strickland of Muncie, Ind.; three sisters, Betty S. Bissette of Henderson, Ruby S. Langley of Zebulon, and Helen S. Stanton of Henderson; one brother, Jackie R. Strickland of Henderson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Mike Pollard, Scott Pollard, Kenneth Viverette, David Viverette, Marshall Tingen, Jimmy Hedrick, Mike Sandarelli, and Steven McCann.

Ralph E. Peace
HENDERSON -- Ralph Elliott Peace died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Mount Vernon, N.Y., and the son of the late Lonnie V. Peace and Clarance Higgins. He was the grandson of the late Hattie J. and Melvin Fogg.
At an early age, he joine the Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson and was educated in the Vance County Public Schools, graduating from Henderson Institute in 1966. He was a 1970 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, with a bachelor of science degree.
In 1972, he began his career with the City of Henderson for five years and the next four years with Vance Recreation Programs. In 1981, he returned to the City Recreation Program where the City of Henderson took the program over.
His tenure with the City of Henderson began with him being the first paid recreation employee, to supervisor, interim director, and director of the Recreation Department. After 28 years with the Recreation Program, he finally saw his dream come to light with the reality of the Phase I Aycock Complex Project. During his tenure, there were many milestones: he was the third director hired and only African American, Implementation of the NYPUM program, Kerr Lake Swimming Facility, Geritol League, Park Ranger Program, Director and assistant director of the Athletic Program, Phase I and Phase II of the Blacknall cemetery Program, Elmwood cemetery Program, Developmentally Disabled Program, Silver Striders Walking Program, and Physical Exam Program for Youths. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, vice president of the World National Powerlifting Federation and owner/coach of the Ebony Barbell Club. In 1977 and 1979, he received the National Gold Medal Award by the Sports Foundation Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Ernestine Jones Peace; two sons, Thomas Elliott Peace and Ralph Michael Peace, all of the home; and one adopted brother, Otis Richardson of Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service Chapel by the Rev. Saint J. Silver, assisted by the Rev. James Foster. Interment will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 732 N. Pinkston St. while the body will be E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be members of the Ebony Barbell Club.Floral bearers will be members of the Queen of Hearts Pinochle Club.
Sam Powell Sr.
VAUGHAN -- Sam Powell Sr., 80, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at his Rt. 2, Macon residence. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Eddie Powell and Eva Alexander Powell.
He received his education in the Warren County School System.
In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1944. He was a member of the General Daniel “Chappie” James American Legion Post 425 of Littleton.
He joined Burchett Chapel Christian Church at an early age. He was a member of the deacon board, usher board, and Sunday school, and served as director of the Junior Choir and Junior Church. He organized and served as leader of the Burchett Chapel Male Chorus. He remained a faithful member until his death.
He was a farmer and employee of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service of Warren County, retiring in August of 1986.
He married the former Clara Lucille Bullock on Dec. 27, 1942, and the couple had seven children.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at The Greater Ashley Chapel Baptist Church by the Revs. Milton L. Jones and Lynne Bradley. Burial will be in the Powell Family cemetery in Vaughan.
Surviving are his wife, Clara B. Powell of the home; his children, Eva L. Burnett and Laura B. Barrow, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Sam Powell, Jr., John W. Powell, Sr., Naomi P. Allen and Eunice Powell, all of Vaughan, and Barbara J. Bankhead; one sister, Laura B. Johnson of Baltimore, Md.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers and flag-folders will be members of the General Daniel “Chappie” James American Legion Post 425. Floral bearers will be members of the General Daniel “Chappie” James American Legion Post 425 Ladies Auxiliary.
The family will meet with friends at the home.
The body will be on view at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today; 8-8:45 p.m. Monday; and will lie in state at the church for one hour before the services.

Harry Q. Simmons, Sr.
HENDERSON -- Harry Quinton Simmons, Sr., 81, of 1510 Cypress Drive, Henderson, died Saturday, December 2, 2000 at his home.
Born November 6, 1919 in Carteret County, he was the son of the late Elder Major Leland and Sarah Eliza (Sadie) Mason Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was retired county agent with North Carolina State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. He served the Extension Service in Greene, Wake, and Bertie Counties before moving to Vance County, as Extension Chairman, in 1961. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1971. After his retirement in 1979, he served for almost a decade as Sales Supervisor for the Henderson Tobacco Market. He graduated from North Carolina State College, with a Bachelor of Science Degree, and received a Master of Education degree from North Carolina State University in 1969.
He served his country as a medic during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division in the Phillipines and Japan. He was in Tokyo Bay when the surrender was signed aboard the USS Missouri in 1945 and then served as part of the occupation forces in Japan.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at 3:00 p.m., in Newport River Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder J.M. Horne and Elder John Draper. Burial will follow in Amariah Garner cemetery in Newport, N.C.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mildred Jewell Taylor Simmons, formerly of Sea Level, N.C.; two sons, Harry Q. Simmons, Jr., of Caswell Beach, N.C., and Alvah Taylor “Buddy” Simmons, of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Signa Rose S. Roberts, of Newport, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends today, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home, and Monday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Munden Funeral Home, in Morehead City, N.C. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Joe McGirk, Mitchell Taylor, Michael Taylor, Mickey Simmons, Jimmy Simmons, Danny Roberts, James Simmons, and Arnold Wade.

George W. Williams
HENDERSON -- George Washington Williams, 75, a native of Henderson, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in New Jersey. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late McKinley and Alice Heggie Williams.
He served in the United States Army.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mary Davis Royster Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Pricilla Ellis and Alice Clark. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are four sisters, Alma Johnson, Iola Harris, Nannie Parrish, all of Henderson, and Candy Horton of Rocky Mount.
The family will receive friends at the 117 Booth Ave, residence of Alice Clark; and 234 W. Orange St., residence of Alma Johnson.
The body will be on view at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until taken to the church one hour before the services.

Jay S. Cline
BROAD CREEK -- Jay Setzer Cline, 69, of Broad Creek, formerly of Catawba County, died Saturday morning at his home.
He was the son of the late John A. Cline and Bonnie Setzer Cline.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Broad Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Banks officiating.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Newton and past commander of the American Legion in Henderson, member of Henderson Lodge 229 AF&AM, past president of Eastern Carolina Traffic Club and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sanford.
He is survived by his wife Joan Bignon Cline; son and daughter-in-law, John Jay Cline and Kim Horst Cline of Hickory; sister, Maxine Cline Rhinehardt of Newton; and grandchildren, Katie, John Jay Jr. and Kevin Cline, all of Hickory.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Masonic and Eastern Star Fund, c/o Henderson Lodge 229 AF&AM, Henderson, NC 27536.

Helen N. Dague
CREEDMOOR -- Helen Nevils Dague, 85, of Hillside Nursing Center in Wake Forest, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Raleigh Community Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Mary Veazey Washington.
She lived in Creedmoor for 45 years before moving to Palatka, Fla. She worked as a buyer and manager of lingerie at Baldwin’s Department Store and Montaldo’s in Durham for many years. She served as associate matron of the South Granville’s Benjamin Stanfield Chapter No. 46 of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creedmoor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Creedmoor by the Rev. Donnie Brown. Burial will be in the Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Ralph Thomas Nevils Jr., of Raleigh; a sister, Billie Garner of Durham; a brother, Harold Washington of Creedmoor; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild; five great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Grace S. Jenkins
WILTON -- Grace Sadler Jenkins, 86, a former resident of the Wilton community, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late Luther C. and Tiney Haithcock Sadler and the widow of Irvin L. Jenkins.
She was a member of Banks United Methodist Church, a long time Sunday school teacher, president of the Wilton School PTA and an active member in the Wilton community for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Banks United Methodist Church by the Revs. Diane M.C. Blanchard and Ray Gooch. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Leigh J. Barnard of Chapel Hill, Sue Jean J. Luger of Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Gathon Sadler of Creedmoor, J. Waverly Sadler of Henderson; a sister, Evelyn Thompson of Greensboro; and one granddaughter.

Ronald D. Morris
HENDERSON -- Mr. Ronald Dwight (Ron) Morris, age 58, of Henderson, N.C., husband of Mrs. Alvie Jean Morris, died in Maryland Sunday morning, December 3, 2000.
Mr. Morris was born Sept. 2, 1942 in Evansville, Ind. to the late Charles Marvin Morris and Ruth Mary Ruxer Morris Hawkins.
Mr. Morris was employed at Vance County Jail as captain and was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps having served in the Vietnam era.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alvie Jean Branson Morris of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Crystal Ann and Patrick Marshall, Stokesdale, N.C.; three grandchildren, Ashley Rene’ Marshall, Amber Jeanette Marshall and Alex Dwight Marshall, all of Stokesdale, N.C.; a half sister, Janet Nichols; and a half brother, Dennis Hawkins of Fort Worth, TX.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel and will be conducted by Rev. Estel Cook. Burial will follow in The Crooked Oak Moravian Church cemetery with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard 11th District Post 2019.

Tiny S. Salmon
NORLINA -- Tiny Swanson Salmon, of Rt. 1, Norlina, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, in South Hill Memorial Healthcenter.
She was a member of the Wise Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton. The Rev. Kenneth Bunch will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery in Warrenton.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.
Surviving are four daughters, Katie Little of Concord, Tina Vaughan of Wilson, Carmelita S. Pendergrass of Henderson and Elizabeth Sue Andersen of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, James Paschall of Troy, Mo., and Thomas Salmon of Norlina; one sister, Jean Wall of Norlina; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
