Walter W. Bowden

BURLINGTON -- Walter W. Bowden, 82, of 416 S. Beaumont Ave., Burlington, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health. He was a native of Henderson and the son of the late Walter David Bowden and the late Julia Wilkerson Bowden.
He was the former owner of Bowden’s Garage and was affiliated with Emmanuel United Methodist Church, serving as usher and as a member on numerous boards. He also served on the Burlington Civil Air Patrol and was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a staff sergeant and with the European Theatre.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Hobbs, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Gary Hendrix.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Newlin Bowden of the home; two daughters, Lucy Bowden Scott and Julie Bowden Walker, both of Mebane; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington and other times at the residence.

Rosa M. Boyd

HENDERSON -- Rosa Marie Boyd, 64, of 11700 N.C. Hwy. 39 North, Henderson, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Anderson and Nannie Hanks Boyd.
She was a graduate of the former Henderson Institute and was also employed at the Social Security Administration of Baltimore, Md., for several years.
She was a member of Woodsworth Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Lawrence Harrison. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Caroline Hargrove of Henderson; and two brothers, Anderson Boyd Jr. and James Boyd, both of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be friends of the family.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Irene T. Eaton

VANCE COUNTY -- Irene Terry Eaton, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, in Newport News, Va. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Henry and Cary Ann Terry.
She was the pianist for Island Hill United Church of Christ in the 1950’s and also sang and used her musical talent with the Starlights Gospel Choir with the Rev. W.F. Lee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Island Hill United Church of Christ by the Rev. Shelton Carr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Rosa Lee Small of Henderson and Alma T. Hargrove of Newport News, Va.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view at 2 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

H. Fuller Pace

NEW BERN -- H. Fuller Pace, 72, of 1004 Devonshire Drive, died Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at his residence.
Fuller was a Franklin County native, a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church, a deacon with First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount, and a retired beverage distributor.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2000 at Pollock-Wells & Best Chapel with Dr. Stephen Cobb officiating. Committal will follow in New Bern Memorial cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Magdalene Creech Pace, of the residence; son, Charles M. & Betty P. Pace, New Bern, N.C.; sisters, Isabell Pace Wortham, Henderson, N.C., Evelyn Pace Woodlief, Kittrell, N.C., Dorothy Pace VanDyke, Chesapeake, Va., Marie Pace Floyd, Henderson, N.C.; grandchildren, Mrs. Amy Pace & Jonathan Hasty, Hickory, N.C., David Madison Pace, New Bern, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2000 at Pollock-Wells & Best Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence, 1004 Devonshire Drive. Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 2201 Henderson Ave., New Bern, N.C. 28560.

Etta G. Royster

VANCE COUNTY -- Etta Gertrude Royster, 65, of 9159 U.S. Hwy. 15 North, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a Vance County native.
She was a graduate of the Henderson Institute and was also a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Marvin O. Royster of Durham and Vernon E. Royster of the home; one sister, Emily D. Brummell of Clarksville, Va.; three brothers, Adron J. Scott of Henderson, Theo Scott of Townsville and George W. Scott of Bullock.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Philadelphia Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Waverly Mills. Burial will follow in the Davis Chapel Church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at Betts & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.

Marvin Stevenson Sr.

WARRENTON -- Marvin Stevenson Sr., 50, of Henderson, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Clara Stewart

MACON -- Clara Louise Thorne Stewart, 87, of Rt. 1 Box 262, Macon, on Lake Gaston, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Halifax Regional Medical Center. She was a Polk County native and the daughter of the late Albert Thorne and Addie Greene Thorne. She was the widow of James R. Stewart.
She was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Roanoke Rapids, a former Sunday school teacher and member of Centerville Baptist in Fentress, Va., for many years. She loved to raise and take care of flowers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Blaylock Funeral Home by Bishop Mark Evans. Burial will follow at Greenwood cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are one daughter, Bette S. Hamilton of Dana Point, Calif.; two sons, Ben Stewart of Raleigh and James Robert Stewart Jr. of Ringwood, N.J.; one sister, Loyce Miller of Rutherfordton; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday prior to funeral services at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Wallace T. Thorpe

HENDERSON -- Wallace Thomas Thorpe, 64, of 2554 Smith Road, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at his home. He was the son of the late Robert T. Thorpe and Annie Greene.
He was a retired employee of the Preston Trucking, 151 Line Company.
Surviving include his wife, Harriett F. Thorpe of the home; one son, Nathan Thorpe Sr. of Maryland; two daughters, Felicia Thorpe of Maryland and Paula Peace of Oxford; seven grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Betts Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Willie Darby. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Betts Funeral Home of Oxford.

Leonard Wilker

WARRENTON -- Leonard Wilker, 83, of Rt. 1, Warrenton, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Leonard and Sue Martin Wilker.
He was a retired farmer and carpenter, and a member of Warren Plains Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warren Plains Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Collier Wilker of the home; three sons, Larry Collier of Macon, A.C. Collier of Plymouth and Bud Doyle of Washington State; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Rooker Carroll, Jack Whitby, Tim White, Harry St. Sing, Jerry Bolton and Heath Frazier.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Willie E. Stovall

HENDERSON -- Willie Evans “Bill” Stovall, 83, of 3200 Old Watkins Road, Oxford, N.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at his home. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Evans W. and Kate Woody Stovall.
He was a retired farmer and merchant. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Campaign. He was a member of Stovall Baptist Church and attended Rehoboth United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ben Rooker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Wrenn Stovall; a daughter, Betty Jane Stovall of Oxford; a son, Jerry E. Stovall of Henderson; three sisters, Ruth S. Hester of Raleigh, Gertie S. French of San Antonio, Texas, and Juanita Stovall of Butner; two brothers, Willard H. Stovall and Paul N. Stovall, both of Oxford; and one grandson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be F.T. Wrenn, Johnny Wrenn, Maurice Capps, David Stovall, Gene Stovall, Douglas Hester, Donald Betts, Larry Wrenn, and Charles Tilley.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Rehoboth United Methodist Church, c/o Barbara Burwell, 2205 Community House Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Maurice Tippett

OXFORD -- Maurice Tippett, 86, of 218 Grace St., died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2000, in Tryburn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Durham.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.

Dr. John William Uzmann

CONWAY -- Dr. John William Uzmann, age 80, of Myrtle Trace, died Monday, December 18, 2000 in Conway Hospital following an illness.
Dr. Uzmann was born in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late John Henry Uzmann and Ines Uzmann Grill. He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. James and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Uzmann.
Surviving are: his wife, Doris “Dotty” Merricks Uzmann of Conway; four sons, Mark Uzmann and his wife, Lauran, of Savannah, GA, James Gregory Uzmann of Louisville, KY, John David Uzmann and his wife, Laurie, of Henderson, and Paul Richard Uzmann of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Dorothy Kornberg and her husband, Knud, of Pinehurst; five grandchildren, Rachel, Alison, Courtney, Jessica and Christopher.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday from Catholic Church of St. James with Father Rick LaBrecque as Celebrant.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel and 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church before the service.
Memorials may be sent to Catholic Church of St. James, 1071 Academy Drive, Conway, S.C. 29526.

Mattie Terry Brame

Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Terry Brame, 84, of 370 W. Rockspring St., will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Jerome Taylor. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Brame died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000.
A Vance County native, Mrs. Brame was the daughter of the late Armstead and Cornelia Plummer Terry. She was the widow of Walter T. Brame.
Mrs. Brame was retired from Peerless Tube in Newark, N.J. She was a member of St. Andrews Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Missionary Circle and Deaconess Board.
Mrs. Brame is survived by her devoted great-neice Heddie Alston, of the home; four neices, Grace Singleton (Richard) and Mattie Alston of Newark, Josephine Alston of Henderson, and Rosa Pitchford (Clifton) of Warrenton; two nephews, Larry Alston of Raleigh and Richard Alston Jr. (Elaine) of Henderson; two sisters-in-law, Marjoria Hayes and Ethel Roberson of Henderson; one brother-in-law, Charlie Brame of Newark; two God-daughters, Evenlyn Roper of Newark and Loretta Scott of Virginia; and a host of great-neices, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive visitors at the home.
Services are under the care of the Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Allen ‘Fats’ Harris

Atlanta, Ga. -- Allen “Fats” Harris, formerly of Henderson, died Dec. 21, 2000. He was retired from Roses Stores.
He is survived by his wife, Aline Knott Harris; two sisters, Julia Beckham and Agnes Shifflet, both of Baltimore; three sons, Robert, of Washington, NC, Mike, of Atlanta, Howard, of Atlanta; three grandchildren; Lisa, Jason, and Randy; and two step-grandchildren, Whitney and Carter.

Dorian L. Johnson-Holmes

HENDERSON -- Dorian LaShawn Johnson-Holmes, 23, of 114 Kearney St., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was the daughter of Cynthia J. Solomon and Harry S. Gilmore. She was the stepdaughter of Larry Solomon.
She was educated in the Durham and Vance County School System graduating from Northern Vance High School.
She was a member of Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church where she sang in the choir and also where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Revs. Nathaniel Mitchell and Jessie Yowell. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Jeffery A. Holmes of the home; one daughter, CyMaiya N. Johnson; one son, Jeffery A. Holmes Jr., both of the home; two brothers, Dedric R. Johnson of Suitland, Md., and Stephen Gilmore of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Donita Solomon of Henderson and Apryl Gilmore of Durham; maternal grandparents, Ruben and Connie Daniels of Henderson; paternal grandmother, Janet Kennell of Durham; and a great-grandmother, Autra L. Johnson of Durham.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Floralbearers will be family and friends.
The body will be on view at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

William C. Keith

CREEDMOOR -- William Clyde Keith, 81, of 514 Lake Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Wake County native and the son of the late Marion and Geneva Carpenter Keith.
He was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Hollowell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving is a son, W. Kenneth Keith of Creedmoor; three sisters, Thelma Keith, Loral Mae Keith, Margie Veasey, all of Creedmoor; a brother, Gorvie Keith of Creedmoor; and two grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be given to the Olive Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 3024 Olive Grove Church Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at 10301 Boyce Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Arrangements are Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Clarence Plummer

HENDERSON -- Clarence Plummer, 79, of 23 Frank Bullock Road, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Oxford Manor.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Hermelinda Santiago

OXFORD -- Hermelinda Santiago, 41, of 79 Twin Circle Mobile Home Park, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, from injuries received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident.
She will be returned to her home in Mexico for burial.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Marvin Stevenson Jr.

WARRENTON -- Marvin Stevenson Jr., 50, of Henderson, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Eddie W. Lawrence, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth B. Stevenson of Miami, Fla.; one daughter, Monique Stevenson Edwards of Fort Lewis, Wash.; one son, Marvin Stevenson III of the home; his mother, Mildred Sims Stevenson of Warrenton; four sisters, Josephine Zollicoffer of Henderson, Catherine Stevenson and Juanita Stevenson, both of Warrenton, and Mary Louise Jones of Hyattsville, Md.; three brothers, Thomas Stevenson of Oine, Carl Stevenson of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Henry Stevenson of Hyattsville, Md.; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel.

OXFORD -- Gertrude Wilkerson Wilson, 81, of 3212 Henry Wilson Road, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.
