Thomas R. Hug

WILLOWICK, OHIO -- Thomas R. Hug, age 48, of Willowick, Ohio, formerly of Sandusky, died unexpectedly Wednesday at his residence.
Thomas was born in Sandusky, March 12, 1952. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and earned an MBA from Kellogg School of Business of Northwestern University. He was employed as a computer specialist at Analysts International.
He is survived by his mother, Bernice (Sartor) Hug; his widow, Rebecca Downie; a son, Brian Hug and a daughter, Sheridan Hug, both of Mayfield Hts., OH; three sisters, Dr. Clarice Hug of Henderson, NC, Sr. Mary Charleen Hug, S.N.D. of Toledo and Sr. Rosemary Hug, S.N.D., of Port Clinton, OH.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl P. Hug in 1999; a brother, David J. Hug in 1964.
Funeral services were held.

Annie L. Jones

WARRENTON -- Annie Lewis Jones, 72, of Baltimore Road, Warrenton, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Bethel Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. Alvin Cason, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Jack Jones of the home; five daughters, Lola Taylor, Phyllis Davis, Patricia Drumgo, Jeanette Greene, Carlotta Woodard, all of Warrenton; five sons, Willie Lewis, Johnny Jones, Toney Jones, Richard Jones and Jerry Jones, all of Warrenton; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Sally Wiggins and Minnie B. Lewis, both of Warrenton, and Daisy Champion of Baltimore, Md.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Thomas ‘Snookum’ McKnight

HENDERSON -- Thomas “Snookum” McKnight, 85, of Guardian Care, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Franklin County native and the son of the late Willie and Minnie McKnight.
He worked many years doing private duty nursing in private homes, worked for Pinecrest Manor, Maria Parham Hospital and Guardian Care Nursing Home.
He joined Spring Street Baptist Missionary Church 30 years ago where he was on the Usher Board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Chad Armstrong, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Burnette. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Elizabeth Ashley and Frances Boniello, both of New Jersey, Sheila Hargrove of Oxford, and Dianne Wilkerson of Kittrell; seven sons, Robert McKnight of Connecticut, Thomas Gilbert McKnight of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., James Lee McKnight, Cliffton McKnight, Clarence McKnight, Donald McKnight, all of New Jersey, and Fred Harris of Henderson; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be members of the Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church Male Usher Board.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Charles E. Overton

OXFORD -- Charles Edward Overton, 79, of 103 Royal Road, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Joseph Crawford and Sally Frances Bowden Overton.
He attended Granville County schools and was first married to the late Susan Inez Williams. He retired from U.S.D.A. and N.C.D.A. and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a prisoner of war in Germany.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Anne Bacon Woods Overton of the home; two daughters, Karen O. Brinton of Tupe, Miss., and Sharon O. Edwards of Long Beach, Miss.; two step-daughters, Anne W. Smith of Wilmington and Sue W. James of Bahama; one son, Charles Douglas Overton of Raleigh; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Respecting his wishes, no services will be held. Instead, he requested to be remembered with a smile and a kind deed or word to a veteran.
The family requested the omission of flowers.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home.

Robert L. Parrish

HENDERSON -- Robert Lee “Tony” Parrish, age 67, a resident of 620 Old Epsom Road, died Friday morning at his home.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Hilton and Lucy Gupton Parrish. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War. He was a retired self-employed painter, a member of the Veteran Of Foreign Wars, and attended the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and the Rev. Tom Johnson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Montgomery Parrish, of the home; two daughters, Kelly P. Neely of Hampton, Virginia and Tracy P. Jones of Henderson; one son, Robert H. Parrish of Henderson; two brothers, Vester W. Parrish of Durham and Jackie R. Parrish of McGraw, New York; and nine grandsons.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pall bearers will be W.H. Parrish, Jr., William S. “Butch” Weaver, Lou Pearce, Ray Liles; Dennie Ray Peoples; Curtis Harp, and Wiley Harp.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Charlotte H. Savage

HENDERSON -- Charlotte Hamm Savage, 613 S. Cooper Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
She was the daughter of Eddie Green Hamm and Lillie Patterson Hamm of Wise.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 250 Red Oak Road in Henderson.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Savage of Exmore, Va.; two sons, Edward Savage III of Kennesaw, Ga., Gary Savage of Douglasville, Ga.; two brothers, Thomas Hamm of Youngsville and Jolly Hamm of Wise; two sisters, Mildred Lyles of Warrenton and Pearl Aycock of Littleton; and five grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Cape Fear Crematory of Fayetteville.

Janet P. Williams

HENDERSON -- Janet Paschall Williams, 74, of 70 Spring Valley Road, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in a local nursing home.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. Other times, they will be at the home on Spring Valley Road.
Arrangements will be announced later by Flowers Funeral Home.

Ruby A. Gregory

HENDERSON -- Ruby Allen Gregory, 84, formerly of 101 Webb Place, Oxford, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center in Oxford.
She was a member of Only Way Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wright Funeral Home of Henderson chapel. The Rev. Clinton Winston will officiate. Burial will be in Only Way Church of Christ cemetery in Granville County.
Surviving are three brothers, James Allen of Henderson, John Earl Allen of Raleigh and Loyal N. Allen of Wenona, N.J.; and two sisters, Rosa L. Allen and Annie M. Allen, both of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson and other times at the residence of James Allen, 104 Allen Road, Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Henry L. Hargrove

HENDERSON -- Henry Lee Hargrove, 51, of 270 S. Vance Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late James and Mary Bullock Hargrove.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Greater Refuge Church of Christ by the Bishop Rufus Hargrove. Interment will be in the Oak Level United Church of Christ cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Georgia Ann Terry Hargrove of the home; a son, Henry Lamont Terry of the home; two daughters, Queen Ester Terry of Raleigh and Katrina Renee Hargrove of Henderson; one granddaughter; four sisters, Mary B. Wright, Vail Hargrove, Shirley M. Hargrove and Kathreen Wiggins; five brothers, Leroy Hargrove, Larry D. Hargrove, John W. Hargrove, James R. Hargrove and Johnnie Hargrove, all of Henderson.
Pallbearers will be Michael Alston, Cornel Alston, Joseph Hargrove, John Hargrove, James Johnson and George Terry.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Service Inc.

Sam Hicks Jr.

RALEIGH -- Sam Hicks Jr., 79, of Raleigh, formerly of Henderson, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at his residence after a period of declining health. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Sam and Bella Mitchell Hicks.
He served as trustee of the Manson Baptist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today by Pastor Cranford Davis and Dr. A.A. Brown. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy B. Hicks of the home; five daughters, Minnie H. Bullock, Elizabeth H. Clark, Mary Ann Hicks, all of Manson, and Josephine Hicks and Helen Ann Hicks, both of Raleigh; two sons, Joseph Hicks and Samuel Lee Hicks, both of Manson; a sister, Leathie Hicks of Middleburg; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John Dailey, Howard Allen, Phillip Hicks, John Mafrow, Rexie Yancey, Donnell Hargrove and Walter Henderson.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Service Inc.

James Norman Williams

WAKE FOREST -- James Norman Williams, 79, died peacefully on Saturday, January 6, 2001, at Carolina House in Wake Forest, N.C. He was a Hooven, Ohio, native and the son of the late Irvin and Alice Williams. Mr. Williams was a veteran of the WWII Army Air Corps, Special Services Division.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Katherine Williams of Hillside Nursing Home in Wake Forest; sister, Aurora Mauch of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, M.R. Williams of Henderson, and wife, Jeremy, of Henderson; granddaughters, Mary Katherine Williams of Henderson, Jennifer W. Rudolph, and husband, Rohan, of Tampa, Fl.; grandson, Lawson Williams and wife, Katie, of Wake Forest; and two great-grandsons, Will Rudolph and Patrick Williams.
Inurnment will be in the Columbarium at First Presbyterian Church, Henderson, N.C. on Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of visitation and flowers, cards would be appreciated, as would memorial contributions to ACTS, 305 Chestnut Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Janet P. Williams

HENDERSON -- Janet Paschall Williams, 74, of 70 Spring Valley Road, Henderson, died Saturday, January 6, 2001, in a local nursing home.
A native of Warren County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Paschall Paschall.
Mrs. Williams was a retired legal secretary, having been employed for some forty years with A.A. Bunn, Attorney. She was a member of Spring Valley United Methodist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Henderson Business Professional Women’s Club.
Funeral services were held Monday, at 2:00 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Denny and the Rev. Pamela J. Gilliam. Entombment followed in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are her husband, Asa David “A.D.” Williams; a daughter, Patricia W. Hight, and husband, Harold, of Henderson; a sister, Martha P. Humphries, and husband, J.D., of Oxford; three grandchildren, Eric Laffman, and wife, Heather, Matthew Hight, and Kelsey Hight, all of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Russell Capps.
The family received friends Sunday, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers were Ernest R. Capps, Frank Albert Capps, Jimmy E. Twisdale, William Carr Tucker, John Morton Burton, and Anthony Lex Twisdale. The Adult Sunday School Class of Spring Valley United Methodist Church served as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Spring Valley United Methodist Church, c/o Charlie B. Baskett, Jr., 647 Spring Valley Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Pauline C. Mabon

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. -- Pauline Critcher Mabon, age 76, a resident of the Brian Center in Lawrenceville, Virginia, died Sunday afternoon after a lifelong illness at the Brian Center. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Walter R. and Bessie Williamson Critcher. She was a faithful Christian of the Baptist faith and had lived her last few years in Southern Virginia.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Island Creek Baptist Church cemetery by Jay Jarrel.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Roberson of Drewry and Faye Cutler of Bullock; two sons, William R. “Billy” Roberson and wife Carol of Bracey, Virginia and Dave Carson Roberson of Lexington, N.C.; one brother, Alvin John Critcher and wife Lois of Henderson; six grandchildren, Annette Winn, Ollie Gray Short, III, Hope McTaggert, Paul Slusser, William Roberson, and Christie Roberson; four great grandchildren, Somer Winn, Caitlin McTaggert, Jennifer Clark, and William Clark. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Wanda Clark.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Betty Roberson at 4198 Jacksontown Road in Drewry.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Island Creek Baptist, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Clyde E. Powell

ROXBORO -- Clyde E. Powell, 87, of 610 Polk Huff Road, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Brantwood Nursing Center. He was a Person County native.
He was a retired farmer, a member of Sharon Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, a choir member and worked with the R.A.’s.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon Baptist Church by the Revs. Jerry Burts and Robert Baynard. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Vannah Sue Denny Powell of the home; two sons, Ralph D. Powell and Ray E. Powell, both of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Hazel P. Blackwell of Oxford and Inez P. Young of Virgilina, Va.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Sharon Baptist Church Van Fund, c/o Marion S. Powell, 1010 Roxboro Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

John A. Reams

HENDERSON -- John Andrew “Shotgun” Reams, 67, formerly of 834 Eastside Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late John Carl and Pauline Gregory Reams.
He attended Westwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was a member of the W.T. Gregory Bible Class.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Steve Jones. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a sister, Lilda R. Allen of Henderson; and a brother, Billy G. Reams of Henderson.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Joe and Lilda Allen, 4944 Satterwhite Point Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John L. Reams, Keith Reams, Mike Reams, James Champion, Bobby Jackson, Buck Stallings, Andy Ramsey, Danny Wilkerson, Bobby Wilkerson and John Faucette.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Westwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, Building Fund, c/o Bill Lloyd, 1023 S. Chestnut St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Mae L. Stone

HENDERSON -- Mae Leggett Stone, 80, a resident of 444 Woodland Road, died Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Suffolk, Va., and was the daughter of the late John M. and Mae Hart Leggett. She was the widow of O. Stanley Stone.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past President of Friends of the Library Board.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Richard Brand, Jr.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 9 at the home at 444 Woodland Road.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Virginia M. Strause

HENDERSON -- Virginia McDaniel Strause, 87, a resident of 225 Country Club Drive, died Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2001, at her home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
