John F. Thomasson

STEM -- John F. “Bubber” Thomasson, 76, of 1613 Sanders Road, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Hunter M. and Lee Hopkins Thomasson.
He was retired from the USPF&O National Guard Warehouse in Raleigh, was a member of the Stem Ruritan Club and a member of Stem United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Stem United Methodist Church by the Revs. Grace Dill and Robert Oliver. Burial will follow in Bullock cemetery in Stem.
Surviving is his wife, Katherine B. Thomasson of the home.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Billie H. Frady

GREENSBORO -- Billie Hamm Frady, 75, of the Asheboro Health & Rehab Center, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She was a native of Greenville, Tenn., the daughter of the late William and Ruby Hamm and the widow of Larry Frady.
She grew up in Bristol, Tenn., and graduated from Bristol High School. In 1941, she moved with her family to Asheville where she lived for 10 years. After working for a period for the FBI and the State Department in Washington, D.C., she moved to the Henderson and Louisburg areas, where she lived until her illness in 1998.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church in Trinity. The Revs. Ken Evans and J.C. Alley will officiate.
Surviving is a sister, Nancy Anderson of Oakton, Va.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Baptist Church, 6499 N.C. Hwy. 62, Trinity, N.C. 27370.
Arrangements are by Cumby Family Funeral Service of Archdale.

Lucy H. Hunt

HENDERSON -- Lucy Hawkins Hunt, 87, a Vance County native, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hawkins, 4294 U.S.-158 Hwy. in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Ralpheal J. Joiner

CREEDMOOR -- Ralpheal J. Joiner, 77, of 224 Mill St., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Arcelia Ramos
Arcelia Rodriguez

OXFORD -- Arcelia Ramos, 52, and Arcelia Rodriguez, 7, both of 4711 Belltown Road, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2000, in a house fire. They both were natives of Michoacan, Mexico.
Arcelia Ramos was an employee at La Guarecita Mexican Restaurant. Arcelia Rodriguez was a second-grader at C.G. Credle School.
Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Felipe Polo-Wood.
Survivors of Arcelia Ramos are her husband, Isidro Rodriguez Sr. of the home; three daughters, Rosa Rodriguez of Michoacan, Mexico, Anna Maria Rodriguez of Henderson and Maria Guadalupe of Durham; four sons, Guillermo Rodriguez and Isidro Rodriguez, both of Oxford and Domingo Rodriguez and Marco Antonio Rodriguez, both of Raleigh; and six grandchildren.
Arcelia Rodriguez is survived by her mother, Rosa Rodriguez of Michoacan, Mexico.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home Inc.

Virginia M. Strause

HENDERSON -- Virginia McDaniel Strause, age 87, a resident of 225 Country Club Drive, died Monday morning at her home.
She was born in Union Springs, Alabama, and was the daughter of the late Everett Sulton and Madge Dawson McDaniel of Albany, Georgia. She was the widow of Nathan Philip Strause, Jr.
She was a member of The Church Of The Holy Innocents, Contemporary Book Club, and the Henderson Junior Garden Club.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at The Church Of The Holy Innocents by the Rev. Daniel Barker. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Nathan Philip Strause III of Tucson, Arizona, and Henry McDaniel Strause of Henderson; two sisters, Bess M. Polack of Winter Park, Florida, and Beryl M. Harris of Winter Springs, Florida; four grandchildren, Catherine S. Lynch of Chicago, Illinois, Virginia S. Brown of Charlotte, N. C., Jonathan P. Strause of Los Angeles, California, and Henry M. Strause Jr. of Henderson; and five great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John McDaniel, Chris Brown, John Zollicoffer, David Hicks, Sam Burrows, Bob Forster, Ronnie Jones and Frank Harris.
The family will receive friends at the home at 225 Country Club Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Claire’s Memorial Garden Fund at The Church Of The Holy Innocents, 210 S. Chestnut St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Robert L. Thaxton

OXFORD -- Robert Louis Thaxton, 75, formerly of Hancock Street, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. He was a Person County native and the son of the late Willie Green and Mollie McCormick Thaxton.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired farmer.
Surviving are his son, Jimmy Thaxton of Roxboro; and two grandsons.
The body will be cremated and no service is planned at the present time.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

James Norman Williams

WAKE FOREST -- James Norman Williams, 79, died peacefully on Saturday, January 6, 2001, at Carolina House in Wake Forest, N.C. He was a Hooven, Ohio, native and the son of the late Irvin and Alice Williams. Mr. Williams was a veteran of the WWII Army Air Corps, Special Services Division.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Katherine Williams of Hillside Nursing Home in Wake Forest; sister, Aurora Mauch of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, M.R. Williams and his wife, Jeremy, of Henderson; granddaughters, Mary Kathryn Williams of Henderson, Jennifer W. Rudolph, and husband, Rohan, of Tampa, Fl.; grandson, Lawson Williams and wife, Katie, of Wake Forest; and two great-grandsons, Will Rudolph and Patrick Williams.
Inurnment will be in the Columbarium at First Presbyterian Church, Henderson, N.C. on Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of visitation and flowers, cards would be appreciated, as would memorial contributions to ACTS, 305 Chestnut Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Eva Harrison

LITTLETON -- Eva Mae Goins Harrison, 54, of the Olive Grove Community, Littleton, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Nell J. Horton

HENDERSON -- Nell Jonas Horton, 78, of 1611 Cypress Drive, Henderson, died Wednesday, January 10, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Pinkney and Mary Alice Bangle Jonas. She was the widow of George A. Wortham, Jr. and Burley Lenward Horton.
Mrs. Horton was a homemaker and for many years was employed by the former Leggett’s Dept. Store in the fabric department. She was a member of West End Baptist Church.
Nell was a devoted mother, a deeply loved grandmother and aunt, beloved sister and a dear friend to many. Her home was generously offered as a safe refuge to all who came her way and was a source of personal pride. She was a carefree, determined spirit who touched many lives. She loved sewing and kept her yard in immaculate condition. Nell lived her life to the fullest and was a woman of deep faith and conviction. It was indeed a privilege to be blessed by her presence even if only for a short time.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, at 11 a.m., at Sunset Gardens, conducted by Dr. Robert A. Wortham.
Surviving are a daughter, Beth H. Pegram, and husband, Bobby, of Henderson; a son, Robert A. Wortham, and wife, Carol, of Durham; a sister, Ruby J. Lassiter, and husband, Lee, of Henderson; and four grandchildren, Grace Wortham, Johanna Wortham, Joshua Pegram, and Allison Pegram. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Winnon J. Guy and Pansy J. Currin; and a brother, Robert Jonas.
The family will receive friends today, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Bobby and Beth Pegram, 1104 S. Chestnut Street, Henderson.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to The American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, New York 10019.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ralpheal J. Joiner

CREEDMOOR -- Ralpheal Jessie Joiner, 77, of 224 Mill St., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Lacy Joyner.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Braswell Joiner; two sons, Wayne Joiner of Graham and David Booker of Holly Springs; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at the residence. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Carolyn B. McAlister

OXFORD -- Carolyn Brooks McAlister, 58, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Sentara Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of Nina Eakes Brooks and the late Elbert Brooks.
She was educated in the Oxford School System and a graduate of East Carolina University. She was a high school English teacher in North Carolina for many years and the same for the past 16 years with the Suffolk, Va., school system. She was a former member of Enon Baptist Church and a recent member of Holland Road Baptist Church in Virginia Beach.
Surviving are her mother, Nina Eakes Brooks of Oxford; one sister, Barbara B. Brantley of Durham; and one brother, Charles R. Brooks of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Enon Baptist Church in Oxford by the Rev. James C. Shelley Jr. and the Rev. Pittman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Enon Baptist Church, the American Diabetes. Association or to the American Heart Association.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.

Alice M. Roberson

HENDERSON -- Alice Matthews Roberson, 82, of 609 Young St., Henderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Frank and Blanche Ayscue Matthews. She was the widow of Butler Roberson Sr.
She was a retired cashier with Henderson Laundry. She was a member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hilton Moore. Burial will follow in New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Daisy R. Carliles of Norlina, Betty R. Sizemore of Eden, Pearlie R. Anderson of Raleigh and Charlotte R. Moss of Henderson; three sons, Johnny B. Roberson Jr. of Greensboro, Michael G. Roberson of Kernersville and Tex B. Roberson of Julian; two sisters, Virgie M. Lynch of Norlina and Addie L. Matthews of Henderson; two brothers, James C. Matthews and Henry F. Matthews, both of Norlina; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home on 609 Young St.
Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. They are Kenneth Anderson, Frankie Anderson, Mark Roberson, Daniel Roberson, Chad Stevenson, Brad Stevenson, Andrew Roberson and Daryl Carliles Jr.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, 1699 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Evelyn A. Sneed

OXFORD -- Evelyn A. Sneed, 91, of Whitmore Retirement Center, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001. She was the widow of Thomas Q. Sneed.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Oxford United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, by the Revs. Gala Collins, Andy Sneed and Billy Seate.
The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall following the services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 757, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Surviving are her son, William T. Sneed of Chocowinity; her daughter, Sara S. Seate of Durham; brother, O.T. Atkinson of Ft. Myers, Fla.; sisters, Annella A. Smith of Oxford, Mozelle A. Casey of Westcliffe, Colo., Charlotte A. Lewis of Fairmont, Rebecca A. Kinlaw of Lumberton; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home.

Hubert M. Vaughan

NORLINA -- Hubert Macon Vaughan, 89, of Rt. 1 Box 37-B, Norlina, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Hugh Vaughan and Willie Hicks Vaughan.
He was a retired farmer and member of Zion United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Warren Cash. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Delia Cleaton Vaughan of the home; three sons, Odis M. Vaughan of Littleton, Harold Pete Vaughan of Macon and James E. Vaughan of Kodak, Tenn.; five daughters, Mildred V. Fletcher of Hampton, Va., Velma V. Evans of Disputanta, Va., Lois V. Lynch of Norlina, Dorothy V. Stainback of Raleigh, and Judy V. Lawson of Norlina; one brother, Horace Vaughan of Norlina; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.

WARRENTON -- Angie Alexander, 40, of Philadelphia, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, in Philadelphia.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

WARRENTON -- Eva Mae Goins Harrison, 54, of the Olive Grove community, Littleton, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton. The Rev. Timothy Edwards, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Lawrence Harrison of the home; two sons, Lawrence A. Harrison Jr. of Newark, N.J., and Anthony Harrison of Norfolk, Va.; one grandson; five sisters, Lela Mills and Lillian Ellis, both of Roanoke Rapids, Carolyn Clanton of Enfield, Betty Oakley of Durham, and Isabelle Webb of Greenville; and one brother, Henry Goins of Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at R.H. Greene Funeral Home Chapel.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mamie M. Hatchel

NORLINA -- Mamie Mustian Hatchel, 89, of Norlina, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Guardian Care in Henderson. She was a Mecklenburg County, Va., native and the daughter of the late Charlie George Mustian and Mary King Mustian.
She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and the widow of James Eddie Hatchel.
The Rev. Warren Cash will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Hatchel Raybon of Clayton; a son, Gene Hatchel of Norlina; a brother, Irvin Mustian of Chesapeake, Va.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
