Lucy Hunt

HENDERSON -- Lucy Henderson Hawkins Hunt, 87, a native of Henderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Mary Henderson of Vance County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brookston Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas E. Smith Sr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth Hawkins Sr. of Henderson; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Kenneth Hawkins, 4294 U.S. Highway 158.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services starting at 11 a.m.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Lillie A. Kilian

NORLINA -- Lillie A. Kilian, of Norlina, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Willie L. McCaden

OXFORD -- Willie Lee McCaden, 87, of 112 Peace St., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Alice M. Roberson

HENDERSON -- Alice Matthews Roberson, 82, of 609 Young St., Henderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Frank and Blanche Ayscue Matthews. She was the widow of Butler Roberson Sr.
She was a retired cashier with Henderson Laundry. She was a member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hilton Moore. Burial will follow in New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Daisy R. Carliles of Norlina, Betty R. Sizemore of Eden, Pearlie R. Anderson of Raleigh and Charlotte R. Moss of Henderson; three sons, Johnny B. Roberson Jr. of Greensboro, Michael G. Roberson of Kernersville and Tex B. Roberson of Julian; two sisters, Virgie M. Lynch of Norlina and Addie L. Matthews of Henderson; two brothers, James C. Matthews and Henry F. Matthews, both of Norlina; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday night at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home on 609 Young St.
Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. They are Kenneth Anderson, Frankie Anderson, Mark Roberson, Daniel Roberson, Chad Stevenson, Brad Stevenson, Andrew Roberson and Daryl Carliles Jr.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, 1699 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Janet Spruill

WARRENTON -- Funeral services for Janet Spruill will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. West will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughtesr, Mary S. Taylor and Dr. Irene S. Kearney, both of Warrenton; two sons, Thomas N. Spruill of Greensboro and Hughley B. Spruill Sr. of Bunn Level; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ella Garnes of Rancho Cucomongo, Calif., and Willie Mae Barnes of Corona, Calif.
The body will be on view at the Hawkins Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until taken to the church on Saturday at 12 p.m. to lie in state one hour prior to the services.
Arrangements are by Hawkins Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Liza B. Davis

KITTRELL -- Liza Bell Davis, 90, of Rt. 1 S. Chavis Road, Kittrell, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Duane B. Evans

HENDERSON -- Duane Brooks Evans, 53, of 144 Lynn Haven Avenue, Henderson, died Thursday, January 11, 2001 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
A native of Warren County, he was the son of Laila Marttila Evans, of Henderson and the late Brooks Allen Evans.
Now retired, Mr. Evans was a former employee of a Raleigh photography company. He was a member of Mu Beta Psi Fraternity and the North Carolina Historical Society.
Funeral services will be held Monday, at 11 a.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. George E. Williams. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a sister, Gayle Evans Davis, and husband, Dennis, of Henderson; a brother, Sidney John Evans, and wife, Kristie, of Raleigh; two nieces, Heather Michelle Davis and Brie Nicole Shaw; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends Sunday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Gilbert Abbott, Andrew Abbott, Kevin Abbott, Dan Tickle, Ashley Gilliam and Sidney Smith.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Lelia Jones

HENDERSON -- Lelia Donnie Bowman Jones, 68, of 357 Boddie St., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at her residence. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Lilly A. Kilian

NORLINA -- Lilly Anna Kilian, 98, of Ridgeway, passed away peacefully late Thursday at a nursing home in Henderson, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Leonard Michael Kilian and Margaretha Dorothea Meeder Kilian. She married John George Kilian on February 22, 1922. The Kilians were known for their Blue Ribbon Honey and Antique Shop in the Ridgeway area.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 14th at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ridgeway where she was a lifelong member. Rev. Herbert Walther will conduct the service. Interment will be in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church cemetery.
Mrs. Kilian is survived by two sons: Frank and wife Geraldine Kilian and John and wife Ann Kilian, both of Norlina, N.C.; three grandsons: Rudy Kilian of Norlina, Daryl Kilian of Wilmington, Michael Kilian and wife Rebecca of Norlina and Asheville; and three great-granddaughters: Laura, Catherine and Brianne Kilian.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home Saturday, January 13th, from 7 to 8:30 P.M.
Memorial may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Rt. 1, Norlina, N.C. 27563.

Willie L. McCaden

OXFORD -- Willie Lee McCaden, 87, of 112 Peace St., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of the former Oxford Tobacco Research Center. He was a member of Blooming Star Masonic Lodge No. 53.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Ray Allsberry and Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial with Masonic rites will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Lee McCaden; one son, John McCaden of Oxford; one daughter, Pauline Harris Green of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Madie Thorpe of Oxford; two brothers, Henry Merlin McCaden and Wilson McCaden, both of Oxford; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors form 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

John H. McCrimmon Sr.

CONCORD -- Funeral services for John H. McCrimmon Sr., 82, of Concord, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church.
Arrangements are by Wilkinson Funeral Home of Concord.

Maggie C. Nelson

HENDERSON -- Maggie Cates Nelson, 89, formerly of Oak Street, Henderson, died Friday, January 12, 2001 in a local nursing home.
A lifelong resident of Henderson, she was the daughter of the late Will and Clara Cates. She was the widow of Wright Irvin Nelson. Along with her husband, she was owner and operator of the former Nelson’s Grill on Dabney Drive. Both were well known in the community, and they will be remembered by the former employees of Continental Hosiery Mill, many of whom were served meals which were prepared and delivered by Mr. and Mrs. Nelson. She was a member of West End Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 5:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Yates. A private burial will be held Monday in Sunset Gardens.
There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Willis Cates and Louis Cates.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 619 Dabney Drive, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Willie E. Renn Jr.

HENDERSON -- Willie Edward Renn, Jr., 79, of 620 Horseshoe Bend Road, Henderson, died Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late Willie Edward Renn, Sr. and Sallie Evans Renn.
Mr. Renn was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service. A recipient of the Purple Heart, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 A.F. & A.M. and the Henderson York Rite Bodies. He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin W. Rooker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of fifty years, Alma Newton Renn; a daughter, Kay Renn Ayscue, and husband, John, of Henderson; two granddaughters, Megan Kay Ayscue, and Shannon Lynn Ayscue; two sisters, Vernelle R. Owen, and husband, Graham, of Oxford, and Kathryn R. Wade, of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews, including a very special niece, Betty Owen Rose.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of John and Kay Ayscue, 621 Horseshoe Bend Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be F.T. Wrenn, Mike Renn, Jerry Allen, Billy Kittrell, Dennis McGhinnis, Bert Crews, Gary Pulley, Steve Simmons, Charles Gallagher, Ben Harris, Tommy Richardson, and Lee Overton. Retired employees of the Henderson Post Office will be honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Rehoboth United Methodist Church, c/o Barbara Burwell, 2205 Community House Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ruby Wortham Vaughan

HENDERSON -- Ruby Wortham Vaughan, 77, a resident of 129 Henry St., died Friday in Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a native of Warren County and was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Mary Cameron Wortham. She was the widow of Rodney Holt Vaughan. She was a former employee of Southern Quilters and was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church.
The Rev. William Wagner will lead funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou Anderson of Henderson; two sons, Billy Holt Vaughan and Thomas Jackson Vaughan, both of Henderson; one sister, Mable Selerno of Lakehurst, N.J.; and two brothers, Alfred “Al” Wortham of Baytown, Texas, and Robert “Bob” Wortham of Kittrell. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice V. Burgess.
Pallbearers will be Troy Olgee, Durwood Weaver, Dan Short, Wilbert Vaughan, Ollie Edwards and Hubert Vaughan.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 Saturday night at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.

Angie Alexander

WARRENTON -- Angie Alexander, 40, of Philadelphia, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Snow Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. A.F. Horton, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Joseph Alexander will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her parents, Charles and Margaret Tunstall Alexander of Philadelphia, Pa.; her maternal grandmother, Ethel Tunstall of Warren County; and her paternal grandmother, Ruth Alexander of Warren County.
The body will be on view today at the Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Liza B. Davis

KITTRELL -- Liza Bell Davis, 90, of Rt. 1, South Chavis Road, Kittrell, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Bennie and Viola Daye. She was the widow of Leslie Davis.
She was a member of Concord Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday by the Rev. S.E. Blalock. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Belle Alston of Wayne, Pa., Pauline Harris and Mary Floyd, both of Kittrell; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be friends of the family.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Lelia B. Jones

HENDERSON -- Lelia “Donnie” Bowman Jones, 68, of 357 Boddie St., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late John Thomas Bowman and Isabelle Fields Bowman. She was the widow of Charlie Junious Jones.
She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where she served on the senior choir, later joining Progressive Faith Baptist Church where she served as one of the first choir members, a member of the Missionary Board, a member of the Pastor’s Aide Committee and a trustee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Douglas Judkins. Interment will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Irma Brodie of Middleburg and Deborah Allen of the home; one son, Junious Jones of Raleigh; three sisters, Georgiana Hargrove of Richmond, Va., Bertha Clark of Bronx, N.Y., and Florence Jones of Henderson; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home and also at 58 Autumn Lane in Middleburg.
Pallbearers will be William Warren and deacons of Progressive Faith Baptist Church. Floralbearers will be Brenda Gregory, Kim Peace, Jessica Peace, Shannon Anderson, Ruby Person, Shelia Seaward, and Paulette Foster.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.
