Mr. John H. McCrimmon

CONCORD -- Mr. John H. McCrimmon, 82, of Concord, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 P.M. today at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Jim Langford and the Rev. Tom Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
Mr. McCrimmon was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Carthage, N.C. His parents are the late John Henry and Hattie Seawell McCrimmon. His wife, the late Maria Johnson McCrimmon, died in 1998.
Mr. McCrimmon was a member of First Baptist Church, graduate of Wake Forest University, and attended Duke Divinity School in Durham and Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He pastored in Baptist churches for 22 years, serving Vance and Halifax County. His last church was First Baptist Church in Bladenboro, N.C.
Surviving are two sons, Mr. John H. McCrimmon Jr. and wife, Judy, of Concord and Mr. James N. McCrimmon of Baton Rouge, La.; three grandchildren, John H. McCrimmon III (Trip) and wife, Brooke, Christopher (Chris) T. McCrimmon and Joseph Brittain (Britt) McCrimmon, all of Concord.
Memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Branchview Drive, Concord, N.C. 28025 or The Divinity School at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Willie E. Renn Jr.

HENDERSON -- Willie Edward Renn, Jr., 79, of 620 Horseshoe Bend Road, Henderson, died Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late Willie Edward Renn, Sr. and Sallie Evans Renn.
Mr. Renn was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service. A recipient of the Purple Heart, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 A.F. & A.M. and the Henderson York Rite Bodies. He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 3 p.m., at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin W. Rooker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of fifty years, Alma Newton Renn; a daughter, Kay Renn Ayscue, and husband, John, of Henderson; two granddaughters, Megan Kay Ayscue, and Shannon Lynn Ayscue; two sisters, Vernelle R. Owen, and husband, Graham, of Oxford, and Kathryn R. Wade, of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews, including a very special niece, Betty Owen Rose.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of John and Kay Ayscue, 621 Horseshoe Bend Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be F.T. Wrenn, Mike Renn, Jerry Allen, Billy Kittrell, Dennis McGhinnis, Bert Crews, Gary Pulley, Steve Simmons, Charles Gallagher, Ben Harris, Tommy Richardson, and Lee Overton. Retired employees of the Henderson Post Office will be honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Rehoboth United Methodist Church, c/o Barbara Burwell, 2205 Community House Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Walter C. Upchurch

STEM -- Walter C. “Sam” Upchurch, 77, of 1556 Easy St., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Wake County native and the son of the late Thomas Bagley and Mabel Goodman Upchurch.
He was a member of Living Word Baptist Church and was a retired insurance agent.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Terry Hall. Burial was in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Living Word Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1172, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation was held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Bessie Baker

WARRENTON -- Bessie Baker, 94, of Warrenton, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Betty M. Burnette

OXFORD -- Betty Moss Burnette, 87, of E.E. Toney’s Nursing Home, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Atlas and Elizabeth King Moss. She was the widow of Eugene F. Burnette.
She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Randy Pittman. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Elizabeth “Pete” Dunn of Oxford; three sisters, Mary Moss Elliott and Ester Moss Carter, both of Oxford, and Mozelle Moss Jackson of Stem; a brother, James B. Moss of Oxford; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. today prior to the funeral service at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at 403 Harris St.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Kenneth W. Lee

OXFORD -- Kenneth Wayne Lee, 53, of 5126 Tabbs Creek Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at the V.A. Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
Arrangements will be announced later by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Ruffin A. McGhee

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ruffin Alexander McGhee, 74, died Dec. 29, 2000, in Washington, D.C.
He graduated from Mary Potter Academy and attended North Carolina A & T State University. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran.
Funeral services were conducted on Jan. 5 at the Saint Paul’s Church Rock Creek Parish in Washington. Burial was in the Lincoln Memorial cemetery in Suitland, Md.
Surviving are one daughter, Jocelyn McGhee Kelso; three sisters, Dorothy E. McGhee and Sarah Jones of Henderosn and Clorene Taylor of Washington; one brother, Walter T. McGhee of Washington.

Mittie G. Owens

STOVALL -- Mittie Glover Owens, 73, of 7739 Mt. Road, Stovall, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Wake Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late James H. Glover and Mary Harris Glover.
She was a former employee of the Ideal Fastener Company.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Young of Brentwood, Md., and Mittie O. Richardson of Watertown, N.Y.; one son, Ben S. Owen of Hampton, Va.; two brothers, Joseph Glover and Alfred Glover, both of Henderson; four sisters, Annie Peace of Henderson, Mary Winbush of Bullock, Esther Lamb of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Zenobia Alderholt of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday at the Betts and Son Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Herman Royster officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery.
Arrangements are by Betts Funeral Home of Oxford.

Walter W. Walker

NORLINA -- Walter Woodrow Walker, 85, formerly of Norlina, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Charles William Walker and Sudie Thompson Walker. He was the widower of Nettie Vaughan Walker.
He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Revs. Ernest Bowes and Warren Cash. Burial will follow at Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in Oine.
Surviving are two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mike Vaughan, John Ross, Wilbert Vaughan, Charles Lynch, Ed Schuster, Fritz Vaughan, Kenny Vaughan and Dan Black.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Lona S. White

WARRENTON -- Lona Shearin White, 89, formerly of the Colonial Lodge, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late James Henry Shearin and Sarah Webb Shearin.
She was a member of Embro Methodist Church and the widow of Julius White.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood cemetery in Macon by the Rev. Rob Evans.
The family will be at Blaylock Funeral Home today from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Irene S. Guins

CREEDMOOR -- Irene Stalling Guins, 82, of 826-A North Main St., died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center in Oxford. She was a Wake County native, the daughter of the late Bernard and Meta Balcolm Stalling and the widow of Ashley Robert Guins.
She was a member of Union Baptist Church and was owner and operator of the former Guins Shoe Shop.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Creedmoor cemetery by the Rev. Robert Oliver.
Surviving are her daughter, Meta Holmes of Oxford; a sister, Winnie Oom of Danville, Va.; and two grandsons.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today, prior to the graveside service, at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at 5042 Old 75, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Howard Hawkins Sr.

HENDERSON -- Howard Hawkins Sr., of 431 Cross Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Jesse J. Lea

CREEDMOOR -- Jesse James “J.J.” Lea, 67, of 115 North St., died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Lewis Daniel and Margaret Potts Lea.
He was of the Baptist faith and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked for Carolina Trailways for 22 years, retiring in 1986 with a million miles accident free record and was employed by Southern Coach since 1986.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Don Brown. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Nordan Lea of the home; a daughter, Deborah McDonald of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Patrick Robertson of Creedmoor, Scott Lea of Creedmoor; a sister, Lela Frances Lea of Creedmoor; a brother, Edgar “Luke” Lea of Creedmoor; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 38, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at 117 North St.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Anne W. Reed

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Anne Woods Reed, 93, of 111 Sedgewood Drive, formerly of Norlina, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Ebenezer Nursing Center in Roxboro. She was a native of Roxboro, the daughter of the late Hugh and Clarissa Woods and the widow of William Owen Reed.
She graduated from Louisburg College in 1927 and received her degree in 1958 from Appalachian State Teachers College where she graduated magna cum laude. She taught school in Norlina, was active in Norlina Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star. She moved to Rock Hill in 1992 to live with her daughter, Anne Woods Reed Boone and had lived in Rock Hill for the past several years.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Warrendale cemetery in Norlina by the Rev. Carlyle H. Hall Jr. Interment will immediately follow the service.
Surviving are one sister, Rose Ellen Holeman of Lake Wales, Fla.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road in Rock Hill, S.C.

David G. Wilson

OXFORD -- David G. Wilson, 304 Forest Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his home. He was a Granville County native and the son of Elsie Mae Owen Wilson and the late Robert G. Wilson Jr.
He was a member and usher of Oxford Baptist Church and was an agent for Granville County Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. in Oxford for 25 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Steve Bolton and the Rev. Cam Ford. Burial will be in Hester Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Carrie Rogers Wilson of the home; a son, Bobby Wilson of the home; his mother, Elsie Mae Owen Wilson of Oxford; two sisters, Jackie W. Warren of Roxboro and Brenda W. Ellington of Oxford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Lenis Hazel Wilson

HENDERSON -- Lenis Hazel Kearney Wilson, age 70, a resident of Lot 2 Friendly Lane, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Brittheaven of Louisburg. She was a native of Franklin County and was the daughter of the late John Alfred and Lonie Clapton Kearney. She was a member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Allen Ray Ayscue. Burial will be in Plank Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her companion of several years, Dalton Kenneth Robertson of Henderson; three daughters, Erma Gray Paul of Chester, Va., Marsha Adell Jones and Marie Nelson, both of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John Pendergrass, J.J. Pendergrass, Scott Tingen, Thomas Moore, Gene Ellis and Ronnie Nelson.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Marie Nelson and Marsha Jones, 406 Harriett St., Henderson. Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.

Kenneth Wayne Lee

OXFORD -- Kenneth Wayne Lee, 53, a resident of 5126 Tabbs Creek Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 14th at the VA Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
A native of Wake County, the son of Virginia Lee and the late Winfred Lee. He was a member of the Fifth Special Forces, Green Beret, and served in Vietnam. After graduating from college, he served over twenty-six years in law enforcement with the State of North Carolina. In the late eighties and early nineties, he was manager of security for Glaxo Pharmaceuticals. Prior to forced retirement in February 1999, after being stricken with leukemia, he was employed by the Department of Administration with the State of North Carolina.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Poplar Creek Baptist Church in Vance County by the Rev. Cam Ford. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
Surviving are his wife, Susie Lassiter Lee of the home; a daughter, Carrie Ann Lee; a son, Christopher Wayne Lee, both of Raleigh; his mother, Virginia Betts Lee of Garner; a step-daughter and step son-in-law, Kimberely and Benjamin Moyer of Oxnard, California; a step-son, William Carlton Tatum of Chapel Hill; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Linda Lee of Chocowinity.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, 37212-3637, attention to Katrina Stokes, Social Worker.
Visitation 7-8:30 PM Thursday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home. Ken loved his Lord, his family and his friends. His physical presence will be greatly missed, but his positive spirit and love for life will live forever.

Ethel Haithcock Pruitt

HENDERSON -- Ethel Haithcock Pruitt, 82, of 749 Southerland St. died Wednesday at Britthaven Nursing Home in Henderson.
She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Paul L. and Lillie Faulkner Haithcock. She was the widow of Lou Olie Pruitt and was retired from Harriet & Henderson Yarns.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Gardens, with the Rev. Willard Faucette presiding.
She is survived by one son, Wayne Pruitt of Henderson; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Macon Abbott, Randy Harrell, Bobby Lockemy, Leon Parham, Tyrone Tart, Calvin Pruitt and Jimmy Pegram.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
