Lessie Woodlief Garrett
KITTRELL -- Lessie Woodlief Garrett, 89, a resident of 2169 U.S. Highway 1 South, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Alridge and Lucy W. Woodlief. She was the widow of John Lee Garrett. She was a housewife and a member of the Union Chapel United Methodist Church and of the adult Sunday School class.
The Rev. Jim Hines will lead funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Edith G. Garrett of Henderson; one son, Hartwell Garrett of Durham; one sister, Theresa W. Keith of Kittrell; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Donald Sanford, Tony Sanford, Randy Garrett, Charles Garrett Jr., Edward Woodlief and John Frazier.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.

Dorothy W. Mangum
OXFORD -- Dorothy Wheeler Mangum, 72, of 1016 Lewis St., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at her residence. She was a Franklin County native and the widow of David C. “Buck” Mangum.
She was a retired registered nurse and a member of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Lemar Wheeler. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are two daughters, Marcia M. Brooks and Myra M. Wainwright, both of Oxford; one son, Tony Mangum of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Wheeler of Franklinton.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home.

NORLINA -- Scott Mulchi, 34, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.
Magdalene B. Noell
CREEDMOOR -- Magdalene Brame Noell, 79, of 2060 Will Suitt Road, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at her home. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late Berry Clifton and Hazel Hobgood Brame, and the widow of Lenwood G. Noell.
She was a member of Concord Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was retired from Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Concord Baptist Church by the Revs. Chris Hoffman and Dale Wallace. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Jo Davis of Butner and Becky Stephens of Butner; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

John T. Oakes
OXFORD -- John Thomas “J.T.” Oakes, 82, of 136 Pine Cone Drive, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was a Granville County native, the son of the late John H. and Kate Floyd Oakes and the widower of Marie Stovall Oakes.
He was an engineer with the Army Air Force in World War II. He was a retired automobile dealer for Oldsmobile, Pontiac & GMC and owner of Oakes Motor Co. He was a carrier for the Durham Morning Herald before becoming an automobile dealer.
He was a member of Oxford Baptist Church, a city commissioner, a member of Oxford Lodge No. 122 A.F. & A.M., a member of Oxford York Rite Bodies, Sudan Temple of Shrine, New Bern and a member of the Franklinton Shrine Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. J. Steven Bolton. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Jane Williams of Oxford; three grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Delia Hunt of Oxford, Elizabeth Connely of Ohio, Mildred O. White of Oxford and Ann Jenkins of Raleigh; and two brothers, Lynwood Oakes of Burke, Va., Franklin Oakes of Oxford.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home, 136 Pine Cone Drive in Oxford.

RALEIGH -- Yvette Wharton, 38, formerly of Warrenton, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. She was the daughter of Cynthia Allison Simpson of Philadelphia, Pa., and the granddaughter of Elizabeth Esther Allison of Norlina.

Ann K. Wood
HENDERSON -- Ann Kearson Wood, 70, of 1430 Jacksontown Road, Henderson, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Florence Breedlove Kearson of Henderson and the late Melvin F. Kearson Sr.
She was a retired secretary with Greystone Concrete Products Inc. and also worked as a mail clerk in the Middleburg Post Office. She was a member of Middleburg Baptist Church, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a member and past matron of Chapter No. 108 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Middleburg Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Eddie Nutt. Burial will follow in Middleburg cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Luther E. Wood; two daughters, Nannette W. Skaggs, and Terri Lee Wood, both of Lewisburg, W.Va.; a son, Richard Dane Wood of Lewisburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Betty K. Fleming of Manson and Pauline K. Waterfield of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Lawrence L. Kearson of Marion and Melvin F. Kearson Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; and one grandchild.

Evelyn C. Burroughs
HENDERSON — Evelyn Cawthorne Burroughs, 91, of 159 Matthews Road, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 in a local nursing home.
A native of Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Graham and Eliza Grissom Cawthorne. She was the widow of John Thomas Burroughs.
Mrs. Burroughs was a homemaker. She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church.
A graveside funeral service will be held today, at 2:00 p.m., in Sunset Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin W. Rooker.
Surviving are three daughters, Ann B. Overton, and husband, Sam, Jonie B. Wilson, and husband, Edward, and Mary B. Crews, and husband, Bert, all of Henderson; six grandchildren, Evelyn C. Cable, and husband, Jamie, Al Crews, Lee Overton, and wife, Brenda, Kay O. Abbott, and husband, Jason, and Christopher J. Wilson, all of Henderson, and Michael B. Wilson, of Wilmington, and two great-granddaughters, Kayla Ann Abbott, and Savannah Lynn Wilson.
The family received friends Monday, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home of Edward and Jonie Wilson, 375 Matthews Road, Henderson.

OXFORD — Minnie Thomas Elkerson, 87, of the Brantwood Nursing Center, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001. She was the daughter of the late George W. Thomas Sr. and Lou Emma Harris Thomas.
She was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church, where she served as secretary, president of the Missionary, president of the Usher Board, senior choir member, and member of United Order of Tents No. 669.
Surviving are a daughter, Lillie E. Taylor of Oxford; three sons, Robert Elkerson Thomas of Oxford, James S. Elkerson of Hillside, N.J., and Douglas Elkerson of East Orange, N.J.; two sisters, Elsie Marrow of Oxford and Rosetta Harrington of Moncure; one brother, George W. Thomas Jr. of Moncure; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Morning Star Baptist Church by the Rev. Adolphus Smith. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.

VIRGINIA BEACH — Dennis Paul McCarthy, 42, died Monday, January 22, 2001 at his home.
Dennis was born in Orange, Texas and is the son of Robert Wesley and Barbara Ann McCarthy of Virginia Beach. He was a master painter and loved fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Pam Evans McCarthy; one son, Stephen Paul McCarthy of Henderson; two daughters, Jamie McCarthy Abbott and her husband, Lance Abbott, of Henderson, and Ashley Nicole McCarthy of Virginia Beach; one grandson, Dillon Alex Abbott of Henderson; three brothers, Bruce Allen McCarthy and his wife, Donna Eure McCarthy of Chesapeake, Va., Scott Darin McCarthy and his wife, Cheryl Edwards McCarthy, of Newport, and Dale Warren McCarthy and his wife, Stephanie Bartelson McCarthy of Chesapeake and a host of nieces and nephews. Dennis was predeceased by his brother, Kevin Lee McCarthy.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Norfolk with Reverend Ken Williams. The Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

NORLINA — Gregory Scott Mulchi, 34, of Rt. 1, Norlina, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of John G. Mulchi and Linda Ormsby Turnage.
He was a member of Norlina Baptist Church and the Warren County 4-H.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Norlina Baptist Church by the Rev. Carlyle Hall. Burial will follow in Warren Plains Memorial Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Tammy Rivers Mulchi of the home; two sons, Gregory Scott Mulchi Jr. and Eldin Jackson Mulchi, both of the home; two brothers, Dennis Mulchi and Randy Mulchi, both of Embro; one sister, Elizabeth Ayre Tharrington of Rolesville; paternal grandmother, Nellie Mulchi; maternal grandmother, Sylvia Ormsby; and a stepfather, Harry M. Tharrington of Embro.

HENDERSON -- Michael Anthony “Mike” Marsalone, 49, a resident of 170 Lynn
Haven Ave., died Tuesday afternoon after a brief illness.

V.A. Peoples Sr.
LOUISBURG -- V.A. “Tommy” Peoples Sr., 73, of Louisburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in Rex Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Louisburg Baptist Church by Dr. Larry Williams. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery.
He was elected to the Louisburg Town Council in 1963. He was elected mayor in 1965 and served continuously until 1985. During that time, a number of important milestones in Louisburg’s history were reached. Among them were the construction of a new town hall on West Nash Street, a new weir dam and water treatment plant on the Tar River, replacement of the Main Street Tar River Bridge and upgrading and expansion of the town’s street light system.
Owner and operator of C&P Music Company for 55 years, he was also active in many community organizations: Louisburg Rescue Service (charter member and chief, 1962-1966), Louisburg Fire Department (23 years service, 1959-1982, honorary member), Franklin County Library Board (1975-1987), Auxiliary Police, Civil Air Patrol, Lions Club, Scoutmaster, Civitan Club and Happy Campers. He was president of Electricities of North Carolina, 1981-1982. He was a member of the James Johnson Masonic Lodge and a member of the Louisburg Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for 20 years and served as an usher.
Surviving are three daughters, Vickie P. Bottoms of Louisburg, Susan Peoples of Louisburg and Debra P. Sandling of Pocomoke; two sons, Larry Peoples and Al Peoples, both of Louisburg; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Lancaster Funeral Home, 804 N. Bickett Boulevard, Louisburg, N.C. 27549 and all other times at his home, 208 Lumpkin Blvd., Louisburg, N.C. 27549.
