James H. Southerland

HENDERSON -- James Henry Southerland, 77, of 901 Patton Circle, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at his residence after a period of declining health. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late James Thomas Southerland and Rosa Foster Southerland. He was the widow of Mary Ruth Southerland.
He was educated in the Franklin County Public Schools and was a member of Mitchell Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Daniel Lilly Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Lee Williams of Franklin County; two brothers, Bennett Southerland of Henderson and Julian Southerland of Bronx, N.Y.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Bennett Southerland, 971 Patton Circle, Henderson.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Gloria J. Taylor

CLARKSVILLE, VA. -- Gloria Jean Taylor, 40, of Clarksville, Va., formerly of Henderson, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston, Va. She was a native of Trenton, N.J., and the daughter of the late Lee Taylor and Gloria Skipwith Taylor. She was adopted by the late Warden and Elizabeth Venable. She was preceded in death by her natural parents and adoptive father.
She attended the public schools of Mecklenburg County and Virginia State University. She was a member of of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Clarksville, Va.
Surviving are one daughter, Erica Taylor of Clarksville, Va.; her mother, Elizabeth Venable of Durham; one sister, Linda Ross of New Jersey; one stepsister, Shirley Jackson of Durham; and one brother, Gerald Grover of New Jersey.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va., by the Rev. John H. Brown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday at the church from 12 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.
Arrangements are by C.H. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Clarksville, Va.

Yvette D. Wharton

RALEIGH -- Yvette Donetta Wharton, 38, of Raleigh, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Rex HealthCare. She was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the daughter of Cynthia Allison Simpson.
She attended West Philadelphia High School and was employed in various jobs until illness limited her activity. She was a former Warrenton resident who lived in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brown’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.
Surviving are her mother, Cynthia Allison Simpson of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Denise Durant and Mia Roberts, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sharee Allison of Durham; and her grandmother, Elizabeth Esther Allison of Norlina.
The body will be on view beginning on Thursday.
Arrangements are by Brown’s Funeral Services Inc.

Julia G. Young

WARRENTON -- Julia Gibson Young, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Bud and Emma Davis Gibson. She was the widow of Gordon Richard Young.
Surviving are one son, Ricky Young of Warrenton; one daughter, Ann Young Drewett of Rolesville; one brother, William Gibson of Warrenton; three sisters, Lillian Smiley of Warrenton, Dora Leonard of Hartsville and Mabel Cassidy of Hartsville, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at North Warrenton Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Short. Interment will follow at Gardner’s Baptist Church cemetery.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to North Warrenton Baptist Church.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Myrtle Mae B. Brame

HENDERSON -- Myrtle Mae Boone Brame, age 74, a resident of 1004 Bane Ave., died Tuesday night at Duke Medical Center. She was a native of Nash County and was the daughter of the late Herbert and Anna Johnson Boone.
She was a homemaker and member of the West End Baptist Church and the Open Door Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the West End Baptist Church by Dr. Richard A. Walker. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, William Alvin Brame Sr., of the home; two sons, William Alvin Brame Jr. and Dennis W. Brame, and wife Pam, all of Henderson; one sister, Mozell Peoples of Simpsonville, S.C.; one granddaughter, Teresa Brame; and three great-grandchildren, Billy Ray Bowes, Jonathan Bowes and Rachel Bowes. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Boone.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Perry Foster, R.H. Ayscue, John Franklin, James Taylor, John Baines and Gary Peoples. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Open Door Sunday School Class.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Kathleen B. Coleman

INEZ -- Kathleen Benson Coleman died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Cora H. Dickerson

HENDERSON -- Cora Hamlet Dickerson, 82, of Henderson died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in a nursing home.
She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Jesse Edward and Lila Dale Denson Hamlet. She was the widow of Lewis Cruse Dickerson.
She was a retired inspector with Perfect Packed Products, where she was employed for 20 years.
She was a member of West End Baptist Church and the Open Door Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at West End Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Richard Walker and the Rev. Robert L. Yates. Burial will follow in Cokesbury United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Deborah D. Brummitt of Henderson and Mary D. Owen of Fayetteville; a son, William Lewis Dickerson of Henderson; a sister, Jessie H. McFarland of Henderson; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Terry and Deborah Brummitt, 3725 U.S. Route 1/Highway 158 in Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Dennis Temple Jr., Tim Jenks, Sam Harper, Greg McFarland, Marvin Reese, Jason Stewardson and Henry Gupton. The Open Door Sunday School Class of West End Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, Library Fund, 619 Dabney Drive, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Ola M. Evans

OXFORD -- Ola Mae Evans, 73, a former resident of 5086 Old Route 75, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Dick C. Faines

Funeral services for Dick C. Faines will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Mt. Zion United Church of Christ. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Faines was a resident of the Williamsboro Community. He died Saturday at Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was a life mmember of the Mt. Zion United Church of Christ and was the widower of the late Susie Hamilton Faines.
Surviving are five daughters, Louise Hargrove, Millie Faines, Susie Thomas and Linda Overby all of Henderson, Christine Hawkins of Linden, N.J.; five sons, Columbus, Eugene and Lee Faines all of Henderson, Ervin Faines of Chase City, Va., and Mahlon Faines of Irvington, N.J.; 42 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Tuesday at Garnes Funeral Chapel and other times at the home of Millie Faines at 981 Dick Faines Road.
Viewing was held on Tuesday at Garnes Funeral Home.

Horace G. Fuller

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- Horace G. Fuller, 86, of Colonial Heights died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in the Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Robert Francis and Hodgie Powell Fuller.
He retired as a chemical operator for DuPont after 35 years of service. He was an active member of Second Baptist Church in Petersburg, where he was a member of the Berean Moore Stephenson Bible class and a former member of the deacon board.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Dooley Fuller; a daughter, Emily Fuller Prior of Petersburg; three stepdaughters, Betty Ann Voorhees of Roanoke, Carolyn Fers of Colonial Heights and Elaine Jernell of Amela; a stepson, Jerry Dooley of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; five brothers, James Fuller of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Robert F. Fuller Jr. of Warwick, R.I., John C. Fuller of Henderson, Charles L. Fuller of Louisburg and Gerald P. Fuller of Henderson; and three sisters, Christine F. Mayer of Petersburg, Virginia F. Gupton of Henderson and Nancy F. Joyner of Petersburg.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Second Baptist Church in Petersburg. The Rev. Joe Lewis officiated.
Burial was in Southlawn Memorial Park in Prince George County.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home in Colonial Heights.
Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Richmond Chapter, 7124 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, Va. 23225.

Mary E. Harris

HENDERSON -- Mary Evans Harris, 80, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Hampton, Va. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Victor and Jessie Evans.
She attended Vance County public schools.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel Harris; one daughter, Alissa Hendry; one son, Samuel Dale Harris; two sisters, Frances E. Momon and Callie E. Mitchell; and one brother, Samuel W. Evans of Townsville.
A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Smith Bros. Funeral Home in Hampton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hampton. Burial will follow in the Hampton Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are by Smith Brothers Funeral Home in Hampton.
Local announcements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Catherine Hester

OXFORD -- Catherine “Teensi” Hester, 50, of 3069 Gela Road died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. She was the daughter of Myrtle Pettiford Skipwith and the late James Skipwith.
She attended schools in Granville County and was an employee of John Umstead Hospital in Butner.
Surviving are her husband, Frank Hester; two daughters, Verita Chrisp of Oxford and Sherry Rucker of Henderson; two sons, Willie E. Holloway Jr. of Atlanta and Lamont Davenport of Durham; her mother, Myrtle P. Skipwith; three sisters, Florence Harris, Sandra S. Hicks and Carolyn Jones, all of Oxford; one brother, Robert Lee Skipwith of Vineland, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Betts & Son Chapel by the Rev. Garland O. Heggie. Burial will follow in the Davis Chapel cemetery.
The family received visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Margie Townsend

HENDERSON -- Margie Townsend, 77, of Henderson died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh. She was the widow of Jack Townsend.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Rivers and Mrs. Ray Miller, both of Henderson; one son, Darrell Townsend of Raleigh; six sisters; two brothers; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Pine Branch Baptist Church in Spruce Pine by the Rev. Garry Sparks. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m.
Arrangements are by Webb Funeral Home.

Michael A. Marsalone

HENDERSON -- Michael Anthony "Mike" Marsalone, 49, a resident of 170 Lynn Haven Ave., died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 23, 2001, after a brief illness.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Paul Anthony and Mildred Partin Marsalone of Henderson. He was an employee of Holland Industrial.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sandra Finch Marsa-lone, and two sons, Michael Anthony Marsalone II and Paul Thomas Marsalone, all of the home.
The Rev. Charles M. Cook will lead funeral services Friday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
At other times they will be at the home of his father-in-law, Charles T. Finch, 1720 Summit Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Tom Hunt, Duffy Callahan, Richard Souther-land, Steve Hughes, David Parham, Sherwood Jenkins, Milton F. Legg III, Tommy Greenway, Carson Ellis and Mack Choplin.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all employees of Holland Indus-trial.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Eloise Young

WARRENTON -- Eloise Young, 65, of Warrenton died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Kathleen B. Coleman

INEZ -- Kathleen Benson Coleman, 83, of Route 3, Warrenton, in the Inez community, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospi-tal. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late W.A. Benson Sr. and Elizabeth A. Cheek Benson.
She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and the widow of William Glenn Coleman Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Inez. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Geraldine C. Alston of Creedmoor; sons Glenn Coleman Jr. and Johnny Mack Coleman, both of Inez; sisters Frances Aycock of Afton-Elberon, Mabel Meredith of Lynchburg, Va., and Patsy Choplin of Afton-Elberon; brothers W.A. Benson Jr. of Warrenton and Robert N. Benson of Martinez, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy Davis, John Tom Harris, Leon Williams, Harry Williams III, Bennie Collier and E.B. Harris.
Memorials may be made to Shady Grove cemetery Fund, Route 3, Warrenton, N.C. 27589.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.

WARRENTON -- Larry “Garfield” Copeland, 47, of the Embro community, Warrenton, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
