William M. Elliott
HENDERSON -- William Morris Elliott, 56, a resident of 682 Coopers Grove
Road, died Wednesday night, Jan. 24, 2001. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Annie Norwood Elliott of Henderson and the late William Lawrence Elliott. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Flat Rock United Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Pam Gilliam. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Janette E. Johnson of Henderson and Jenny E. Evans of Nashville, N.C.; one son, Paul Thomas Elliott of Yokota Air Force Base in Japan; two sisters, Jackie E. Brown and Nancy E. Lamy, both of Greensboro; one brother, Lawrence T. Elliott of Henderson; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Janette and J.J. Johnson, 1375 Edwards Road, Henderson, and at the home of Lawrence and Betty Elliott, 2055 Satterwhite Point Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Charles Wyche, David Frazier, Jimmy Blanks, Charles Harris, Mike Edwards, Dan Tucker, Buck Norwood, Gene Jost, Marvin Reese and Charles Parham.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Doug Byrom, Centura Bank, P.O. Box 1609, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Ola Mae Evans
OXFORD -- Ola Mae Evans, 73, a former resident of 5086 Old Route 75, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will be in the Evans family cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Raine Cozart of Creedmoor and Gollie Turrentine of Durham, and one brother, Carl Cozart of Oxford.
The family will receive visitors at the church one hour before the services.
The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Ella Garnes
WARRENTON -- Ella Garnes, 78, of Altoloma, Calif., formerly of Warrenton, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Altoloma, Calif. Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
Sherman G. Parham
PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. -- Sherman G. Parham, 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, after a brief illness. He was the widower of Lottie Allen Parham. He was a native of Prince George County, Va.
His early education was in Prince George County. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Hampton Institute in 1937. He was employed with North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a combination agent in the Raleigh district in 1938, as a staff manager in 1939 and as Raleigh district manager in 1964. During his tenure with the company, he received many honors, including recognition as the Cloudburst Winner six times. He retired in January 1974.
He made many contributions to the religious, civic and political life of Henderson. He was an active member of Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church, the NAACP, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Hampton University Alumni Association, Eastern Star Lodge No. 13 of Hampton, Henderson Consis-tory No. 195 and Imran Temple No. 168, where he was treasurer for decades. He made a profound impact on the governance of Henderson through participation on boards and commissions and through the political arena. In 1963 he was the first African-American to seek the position of mayor.
He traveled extensively throughout the United States and internationally. He was an avid golfer, progressing to play in the North Carolina Senior Games and the National Sen-ior Citizen Olympics in Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Albert Moses officiating. Interment will follow in the Blacknall cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the services.
He is survived by a foster daughter, Royce B. Thomas of Washington, and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at 917 Parkway Drive.
Active pallbearers will be master masons. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Omega Psi Phi, Imran Temple, Henderson Consistory and Hampton Institute University Alumni. Floral bearers will be ladies of Cotton Memorial Church and Daughters of Isis, Court No. 55.
The body will lie in state at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

Bryant A. Peoples
HENDERSON -- Bryant Allen Peoples, 36, of 1517 Cypress Drive, Henderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. He was a Mecklenburg County native and the son of Judith Miller Davis of Henderson and the late Linwood T. Peoples.
He was a former assistant manager with Roses Stores of Durham, and was a dispatcher with Terry’s Wrecker Service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles M. Cook.
Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two sisters, Beth French King of Henderson and Gay French Pleasants of Lexington; and a brother, Baron T. Peoples of El Cajon, Calif.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of his mother, 283 S. Stratford Drive in Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John L. Almand, Robert T. Shaw, Terry L. Perkinson, George C. Allen Jr., George D. Hoyle and William L. Murphy. The Vance County Sheriff’s Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Beverly Perry-Leath
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Beverly Lynette Perry-Leath, 36, of 2713 Stable Hill Trail, Kerners-ville, passed away on Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended period of illness.
Born in Henderson on Aug. 6, 1964, to Lewis Arch Perry and the late Louvenia Lewis Perry, she was educated in the public schools of Vance County. She held an A.A.S. degree from Vance-Granville Community College and was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a B.A. degree. She was enrolled in the graduate studies program of Appalachian State University. Mrs. Leath retired after 10 years of service to the City of Winston-Salem as an information systems analyst. She was of the Baptist faith, having joined the Spring Street Baptist Church in Henderson as a child. She became a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church under the Pastorate of Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr., where she served as a member of the Board of Deaconess, the Sunday Church School and the Inspirational Choir.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Leath; one daughter, Samantha Leath; two sons, Christopher Leath and Joel Leath; her father, Lewis Arch Perry of Henderson; three sisters, Maxine Banks (Ellis) of Richmond, Va., Anita Perry of Raleigh and Kathryn Perry of California; four brothers, Cecil Perry (Judy) of Washington, D.C., Joel Perry (Cheryl) of Ohio, Ronald Perry (Janice) of Maryland and Kelvin Perry of Raleigh; her father-in-law, James A. Leath Sr. of Burlington; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Warren (Jerry) and Susan Leath; two brothers-in-law, James Leath Jr. of Burlington and William Leath of Charlotte; 16 nieces; nine nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at noon at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday at the church. Interment will be in the Ilong Baptist Church cemetery in Kittrell. Arrangements are by Russell Funeral Home, Winston-Salem.

WARRENTON -- Mary Alston Townes, 73, formerly of Warren County, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in Maryland.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton by pastor Eddie Lawrence. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, James P. Townes; two daughters, Mable Nicholson and Cornelia Lewter; two sons, James Townes Jr. and Leonard Townes; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carrie, Clementine and Ada; and three brothers, Irving, Morris and Solomon Jr.

Margie Townsend
HENDERSON -- Margie Townsend, 77, of Henderson died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh. She was the widow of Jack Townsend.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Rivers and Mrs. Ray Miller, both of Henderson; one son, Darrell Townsend of Raleigh; six sisters; two brothers; and one grandson.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Pine Branch Baptist Church in Spruce Pine by the Rev. Garry Sparks. Visitation will be at 2 p.m.

WARRENTON -- Eloise Young, 65, of the Inez community died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Fork Chapel Baptist Church in Inez. The Rev. Timothy Evans will officiate. Burial will follow in the Young family cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, John Young; eight children, Alfreda Burchette of Manson, Stanley Young of Burlington, Emery Young of Raleigh, Jason Young of Baltimore, Kelvin Young of Fayetteville, Andre Young of Raleigh, Lenora Montgomery of Raleigh and Cheryl Alston of Wendell; four daughters; three sisters, Christine Coppedge of Raleigh, Josephine Lee of Richmond, Va., and Shirley Alston of Kernersville; and one brother, Major Perry Jr. of Newport News, Va.

OXFORD -- Lillian Williams Burwell, 70, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Philadelphia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Only Way Church of God in the Providence community of Oxford by Bishop Clinton Winston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are 11 daughters, two sons, 44 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services Chapel.

WARRENTON -- Larry Garfield Copeland, 47, of the Embro community of Warrenton died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Macon by the Rev. Edward Harrington.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Roselle Pitchford Copeland; one son, Garfield VaShon Copeland; two grandchildren; his mother, Patsie Copeland Gardner of Warrenton; four sisters, Verlene C. Dillon of Roanoke, Va., Claytees C. McCreary of Youngstown, Ohio, and Patricia A. Smith and Gloria J. Harris, both of Raleigh; six brothers, Curley Copeland Jr. of Plainfield, N.J., Ervin Copeland of Richmond, Va., Ronnie Copeland of Youngstown, Ohio, and James Copeland, Percy Copeland and William Copeland, all of Warrenton; two stepsisters, Laverne DeShields of Littleton and Beverly Gardner of Allentown, Pa.; and one stepbrother, Milton Gardner of Henderson.

Henderson -- Dick C. Faines, a resident of the Williamsboro community, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Guardian Care Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Mount Zion United Church of Christ. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
He was a life member of the Mount Zion United Church of Christ and was the widower of Susie Hamilton Faines.
Surviving are five daughters, Louise Hargrove, Millie Faines, Susie Thomas and Linda Overby, all of Henderson, and Christine Hawkins of Linden, N.J.; five sons, Columbus, Eugene and Lee Faines, all of Henderson, Ervin Faines of Chase City, Va., and Mahlon Faines of Irvington, N.J.; 42 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Tuesday at Garnes Funeral Chapel and at other times at the home of Millie Faines at 981 Dick Faines Road.
Viewing was held Tuesday at Garnes Funeral Home.
Mildred Fisher Cliborne
WARRENTON -- Mildred Fisher Cliborne died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was born in Warren County on Nov. 12, 1931, to Allen and Agnes Ranes Fisher. She and her husband operated Norfleet’s Hardware Store in Warrenton.
Mrs. Cliborne is survived by her husband, Giles Norfleet Cliborne of Warrenton; her mother, Mrs. Agnes R. Fisher of Warrenton; one stepdaughter, Catherine Cliborne Pemberton of Raleigh; and one brother, Allen Fisher of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Steve Edwards at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery.

Lillian O.W. Burwell
OXFORD -- Lillian Oceial Williams Burwell, 70, an Oxford native, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at her residence in Philadelphia.
She was born in Red Oak, Va., to the late James and Josephine Williams.
She was educated in the Granville County public schools. She moved to Philadelphia in 1972 and worked for the Philadelphia school system.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Only Way Church of Christ in the Provident community in Oxford by the Bishop Clinton Winston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her children, Mary Liles, Josephine Stain-back, Lillian Brooks, Elnora Bass, Carolyn Sykes, Catherine Poole, Debra Williams, Esther Williams, Annie Williams, Jim-my Williams and Ronnie Bur-well; two sisters, Thelma Chav-is and Maggie Hawley; 38 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view at the church one hour before the service.

WARRENTON -- William E. “Bill” Collins, 58, of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. He was a Valley Metro bus driver and a member of the Rocky Mount Moose Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Collins, and one son, Frederick Ernest Collins.

HENDERSON -- Jodie Mosley Edwards, 87, of 545 Faulkner Town Road died Saturday morning, Jan. 27, 2001, at home. She was a native of Warren County, the daughter of the late Rile and Florence Dickerson Mosley, and the widow of Willie Joe Edwards.
She was a homemaker and member of the Unity Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher for 43 years and a member of the choir.
Funeral services led by the Rev. A.B. Greene Jr. and the Rev. Mike Currin will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Unity Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Bridges and Edwards family cemetery at Gillburg.
She is survived by two daughters, Emily E. Edwards and Helen E. Abbott, both of Henderson; three sons, Willie Gray Edwards, Bobby J. Edwards and Jimmy L. Edwards, all of Henderson; three sisters, Margaret Waddill of Statesville and Mattie Ayscue and Daisy Dickerson, both of Henderson; one half-sister, Ann Anderson of New Mexico; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine E. Askew.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Willie Gray “Bud” and Ruth Edwards, 491 Faulkner Town Road.

Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Elizabeth Gibson of Pauma, Calif.; five sons, Alfred S. Garnes of Rancho Cucamon-ga, Calif., and Eugene B. Garnes, Herbert Garnes, Charles W. Garnes and Milton Garnes, all of Baltimore; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Willie Mae Barnes of Corona, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Green Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Dennis G. Lindsay, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

HENDERSON -- James Henry Hanks Sr., 66, of 527 Grant St. died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.
