Albert F. Harris

HENDERSON -- Albert Franklin Harris, 86, a resident of 715 New Bethel Church Road, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2001, at his home.
A Vance County native, he was the son of the late Frank Lloyd and Kate Irene Steven-son Harris. He was a retired tobacco farmer and landscaper.
He was a member of the Hermon United Methodist Church and a former member of the First Congregational Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services led by the Rev. Ben Sims and the Rev. Edward Yancey will be Monday at 3 p.m. at the Hermon United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Moss Harris; three sons, Jimmy L. Harris and Jerry F. Harris, both of Henderson, and Johnny S. Harris of Fayetteville; three sisters, Mae H. Greenway of Henderson, and Irene H. Talley and Vernell H. Parrish, both of Oxford; two brothers, Wilburt C. Harris and Glenn L. Harris, both of Henderson; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie, and two brothers, Raymond and Edwin.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ronnie Harris, William Gray Talley III, Steve Pruitt, W.C. Harris Jr., Cecil Stain-back, Billy J. Moss II, Horton King, Tommy Moss and Billy Moss.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Michael G. Kita

HENDERSON -- Michael George Kita, 76, a resident of 296 Gholson Ave., died Friday night, Jan. 26, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. Funeral ar-rangements will be announced by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Julius Lewis

HENDERSON -- Julius Lewis, 48, of 208 Zollicoffer Ave. died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Michael Lewis of Raleigh; his mother, Hattie Gilliam Lewis of the home; a sister, Annie Williams of Henderson; and three brothers, Kenneth Lewis of Durham and Dennis Lewis and Bollor Lewis, both of Henderson.
The family will receive visitors at the residence. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Luviner McGrier

WARRENTON -- Luviner McGrier of West Franklin Street, Warrenton, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Home in Warrenton. She was a retired Warren County educator. Arrange-ments will be announced later by Harris-Turner Funeral Home in Warrenton.

John C. Taylor

HENDERSON -- John Clinton Taylor, 39, of 439 Poplar St. died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001. Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Joseph Alston Sr.

WARRENTON -- Joseph “Joe” Alston Sr., 88, of the Red Hill community, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Marcie Batchelor

HENDERSON -- Marcie Batchelor, 45, of 70 Sombero Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at her residence. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of Margaret Peace Batchelor Braswell and the late Lewis Batchelor.
She was educated in the Granville County Public Schools.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ilong Baptist Missionary Church by the Rev. Hugh F. Peace. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, James Junior Batchelor of the home; her mother, Margaret Braswell of the home; one brother, Marvin Batchelor of Henderson; three sisters, Lillian Green, Joyce Martin and Carolyn Batchelor, all of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence. The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Esabella Boone

ROCKY MOUNT -- Esabella Claytee Boone, newborn daughter of Latonya Evan and Mario Boone of Warrenton, died shortly after birth Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001 in Nash General Hospital.
Esabella was the granddaughter of Al and Gertline Wortham of Warren County.
Services were held later Thursday by nurses, family and friends in the chapel at Nash General Hospital.

Virgil C. Gill

HENDERSON-- Virgil Cline Gill, 76, of 100 Tower Road, Henderson, in the Cokesbury community, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Rex Hospital in Raleigh. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Benjamin Claude and Annie Bell West Gill. He was a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Robert Greene Jr. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Sue Staunton Gill; two daughters, Marilyn G. Satterwhite and Wendy G. Adcock; two sons, Gary C. Gill Sr. and Dennis R. Gill; a sister, Annie Mae G. Buchanan, all of Henderson; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of David and Wendy Adcock, 120 Tower Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jimmy Perkinson, Fred Gill, Ricky Gill, Wayne Gill, Kenny Pendergrass, Donald Wayne Shearin, Donald Gill, Larry Short and Lynn Capps.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Annie S. Horton

OXFORD -- Annie Sears Horton, 91, of Brantwood Nursing Home, formerly of 3656 Cannady Mill Road, Kittrell, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late Willie and Rebecca Currin Sears and the widow of George Horton.
She was a member of Peaces Chapel Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Ron McCracken. Burial will be in the Sears Family cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca H. Cottrell of Kittrell; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Wallace and Becky Cottrell, 3660 Cannady Mill Road, Kittrell, N.C. 27544.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Lovine E. McGrier

WARRENTON -- Mrs. Lovine E. McGrier, 95, widow of the late Rev. J.E. McGrier, died Friday at Warren Hills Nursing Home in Warrenton. Mrs. McGrier was born July 13, 1905 to the late Edgar T. Evans and Mary L. Evans in Raleigh, North Carolina.
She received her early education in the Raleigh Public Schools, and after finishing high school she attended and graduated from Shaw University. Further study was done at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Her early religious training was at Tupper Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh, and later she joined Warrenton Baptist Church, where she worked as Bible school director, missionary president and choir member. She was affiliated with the Women’s Baptist Home and Foreign Mission Convention of N.C., serving as a life member of the Executive Board, and for 37 years she was State Supervisor of the youth department of the convention. For 42 years, she taught vocational home economics in the Warren County School System (Forty years at John R. Hawkins High School and two years at John Graham School. She held membership in the National Education Assn., North Carolina Vocational Association, National Association of University Women, and the Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Warrenton Baptist Church by the Rev. Walter Yarborough. Burial will be in Flat Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by one sister, Lois Keith of Augusta, Ga.; two nieces, Kathye P. Sellers of Chicago, Ill., Ethel Delores Rose of Raleigh; brother-in-law, George Keith of Augusta, Ga.; nephew-in-law, W.L. Rose of Raleigh; grand nephew and nieces, Mare Rose, Monica Rose and Gloria Sellers.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Warrenton Baptist Church or Flat Creek Baptist Church, c/o Mr. Leon Cheek, 214 Dameron St., Warrenton, N.C. 27589.
Harris-Turner and McMillan Funeral Home in Warrenton are in charge of arrangements.

Elian E. Strickland

NICHOLS, S.C. -- Elian Elijah Strickland, 69, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness. He was a Horry County native and the son of the late Elias Guthrie “Coot” Strickland and Estus Buffkin Strickland. He was the husband of Sara Kathryn Hayes Strickland.
He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years and was a member of the Senior Adult Mens Sunday School Class. He was a retired farmer and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Pleasant View Baptist Church. The Revs. James C. Shelley, Rick Watson and Danny Wiley will officiate. Interment will follow in Red Hill Memorial Gardens directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of Nichols, are two daughters, Kathy Mincey of Nichols and Paula Cox of Loris; a brother, Almond Strickland of Nichols; four sisters, Balzora Hayes of Nichols, Norma Price of Sumter, Montress Causey of Salisbury and Doris Ann Shelley of Creedmoor; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 13403 Hwy. 19, Nichols, S.C. 29581.

John C. Taylor

HENDERSON -- John Clinton “Shorty Black” Taylor, 39, of 439 Poplar St., died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Willie Ray and Lucy Ann Obery Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service by the Rev. C. Jerome Taylor. Burial will be at Long Creek Church cemetery.
Surviving are three brothers, Robert Taylor of Warrenton, Larry Taylor of Henderson and Frank Taylor of Charlotte; two sisters, Dora Lee Davis and Rebecca Terry, both of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Dora Lee Davis, 439 Poplar St.
The body will be on view starting at 3 p.m.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Charles R. Davis

OXFORD -- Charles R. Davis, 69, of 4150 Pecan Drive, Stem, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Wake Medical Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Dewey and Ellen Reece Davis.
He was a member of Peaces Chapel Church and was a painter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peaces Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Futrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Dickerson Davis; a stepdaughter, Linda Mae Morris of Ohio; and three sisters, Angie Fogleman of Roxboro, Christine Robbins of Stem and Patsy Edwards of Northport, Ala.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Peaces Chapel Baptist Church, 4044 Fairport Road, Kittrell, N.C. 27544.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Annie Gooch

HENDERSON -- Annie Ruth Jefferson Gooch, 45, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at her residence in Henderson. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of Mattie Jenkins and the late Ruffin Jefferson.
At an early age, she joined the St. Level Baptist Church in Red Oak, Va. She received her education in the Mecklenburg County public school system.
In December 1971, she married Roy Gooch Jr. She enjoyed caring for the elderly and was a certified nurse’s aid.
Surviving are her husband, Roy Gooch Jr. of Clarksville, Va.; one daughter, Tonya Gooch of the home; four brothers, Thomas Jefferson of Arlington, Va., Lessie Jenkins of Clarksville, Stanley Harris of Red Oak and Willie Jefferson of Red Oak; and three sisters, Dorothy Jefferson of Arlington, Delores Williams of Clarksville and Geneva Hickman of Skipwith, Va.
The family will receive friends at the home, 604 McBorn St., throughout the week. There also will be a family gathering at 126 College St. in Clarksville today and Thursday. (Take Highway 39 all the way to the end. When you cross the railroad tracks, take a right onto Highway 15. This will take you straight into the town of Clarksville. The fifth black-and-white house on the left is where the family gathering will be.)
Funeral arrangements are by Carter’s Funeral Home in Clarksville.

Bennie Jones III

HENDERSON -- Baby Bennie Jones III, 3 months old, died at Duke Medical Center.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his parents, Bennie Jr. and Vanessa Jones, 265 Regina Lane in the Williamsboro community.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Michael G. Kita

HENDERSON -- Michael George Kita, 76, a resident of 296 Gholson Ave., died Friday night, Jan. 26, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Harrison Simons. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home. Other arrangements will be announced later by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

John C. Taylor

HENDERSON -- John Clinton Taylor, 39, of 439 Poplar St. died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001.

George V. Dickerson

OXFORD -- George V. “Shorty” Dickerson, 72, of 309 S. Country Club Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late John H. and Louise Gresham Dickerson.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was retired as shop foreman from Oxford Implement Co. and had worked for the Masonic Home for Children.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Revs. Carolyn Sims and Cam Ford. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Barker Dickerson, and two sisters, Bernice D. Daniel and Juanita D. Woodlief, both of Oxford.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 107 Pine Tree Drive, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the family home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home.

Trumilla H. Estes

HENDERSON -- Trumilla H. Estes, 83, of 4155 Shock-Overton Road died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Center. She was a Granville County native.
She was a member of the Olive Grove Baptist Church, where was part of the Pastor’s Aid, Missionary Circle, Senior Choir, Friendship Gospel Choir and Consolidated Mixed Choir.
Surviving are her husband, Leon Estes; two daughters, Sarah Allen and Eloise Daye, both of Oxford; four sons, Bennie Hester of New Jersey, Alvis Hester and Donnell Taborn, both of Oxford, and Sylvester Taborn of Durham; one sister, Lillie Mae Williams of Oxford; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.
