Alex L. Parham

HENDERSON -- Alex Lee Parham, 79, of 570 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, in a local nursing home.
A native of Johnston County, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Iva Douglas Parham. He was the widower of Essie Hughes Parham. He was preceded in death by a son, George A. Parham.
Mr. Parham was a retired heavy equipment operator with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of Carey Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Carey Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ned Matthews and the Rev. Russell Woodbridge. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Kiger Parham; a daughter-in-law, Patricia S. Parham of Henderson; three stepdaughters, Patricia K. Wilkerson and husband Mac and Tammy K. Bradley and husband Michael, all of Mebane, and Brenda K. Pratt and husband Hal of Durham; a stepson, David F. Kiger Jr. of Kittrell; three sisters, Pearl P. Wynn of Raleigh and Annie P. Pegram and Nellie P. Knott, both of Henderson.
The family will receive friends today, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Chris Hughes, Scott Kiger, Freddie Currin, Bruce Crews, Donnie Hughes, Mike Ayscue, Greg Harris, Mike Renn and James W. “Dick” Pegram.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Travis A. Powell

SMITHFIELD -- Travis Arnez Powell, 37, formerly of Princeton, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in Raleigh.
He graduated from Princeton High School, was an engineer for Iams of Henderson and was a member of Wake Baptist Church in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Bear Creek Church of Goldsboro. Burial will be in the McIver family cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Jeanette Powell of Princeton, and two sisters, Adrienne Allen of Chapel Hill and Elaine Rogers of La Grange.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Bear Creek Church in Goldsboro and other times at West First Street in Princeton.
The body may be viewed from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at R.L. Sanders Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by R.L. Sanders Funeral Home.

Kelly Spruill

MACON -- Kelly Spruill, 81, formerly of the Greater Lovely Hill community in Macon, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in Bayview Hospital in Baltimore.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. Edward Harrington will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Clara Jones Spruill; six children, John Thomas, Kenneth and Marvaline, all of Baltimore, Murphy of Warrenton, Kelly Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Pamela of Upper Darby, Pa.; six sisters, Nancy Horner, Bertha Conklyn, Maria Holmes and Mary Helen, all of New Jersey, Alice Durham of Maryland and Lucinda Nicholson of North Carolina; four brothers, John, Ellis and Willie, all of Baltimore, and Joseph of New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Betts Funeral Home of Baltimore and R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Emma Baskett

WARRENTON --Emma Baskett, 68, of Cinnaminson, N.J., formerly of Warrenton, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Jenesis Elder Care in Cinnaminson.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Marion W. Rogers

OXFORD -- Mr. Marion Wilson Rogers, age 90, of 502 Sunset Ave. died Saturday, February 17, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center.
Mr. Rogers was a native of Anson County and the son of the late Ira J. and Peytona Brown Rogers. Mr. Rogers attended grammar school in Edenton, N.C., attended high school in Henderson, N.C., and attended High Point College for two years. He moved to Oxford in June of 1936 to work at Old Union National Bank as a teller. Mr. Rogers was a graduate of Old Citizen military School, receiving a 2nd Lt. Commission, served 4 years in the U.S. Army in World War II as a 1st Lt., and in the Army Reserve reached the rank of Major when he retired, with 31 years of service.
Mr. Rogers was a member of Oxford Baptist Church for 63 years, where he served in several positions. Mr. Rogers retired from Bache & Co. as a New York Stock Broker, was a charter member of the Oxford Lion Club, the Set-Back Club at Oxford Senior Center and a member of American Legion Post #90.
Surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs. Nancy R. Wilson, and husband Marvin of Oxford, N.C.; 1 sister, Mrs. Virginia R. Parr of Gorman, Texas; 1 grandson, Robert Craig Wilson, and wife Paula Lenhart of Oxford, N.C.; a friend, Janie Dickerson, of Oxford, N.C.; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, from Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. J. Steven Bolton and the Rev. Pat Cox. Entombment will follow in Elmwood cemetery, with military honors. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. 27565. Visitation for the family will be Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin E. Wilson, 4080 Squire Lane, Oxford, N.C.

Cereas B. Steed

HENDERSON -- Cereas Baskett Steed, 70, of 902 Bridges St. died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
She worked many years as a seamstress/dietician. She was a member of the Pastor Aid Ministry, Usher Board Ministry and Kitchen Committee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Coley Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Carlson F. Jones Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Trevor Steed of Washington and Jeff Steed of the home; one stepson, Bobby Scott of Henderson; one brother, Jesse Baskett of Washington; and one grandson.
The family will receive friends at the residence. The family also will greet friends 30 minutes before the service.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. today until it is taken to the church for the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

SOUTH HILL, Va. -- Sylvia Baskett, formerly of Warren County, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in South Hill, Va.

MACON -- Eva Bell, of Macon, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the Duke Medical Center in Durham.

Min. Melvin Hansard

HENDERSON -- Minister Melvin Hansard, of 4361 Warrenton Road, has died.

Rev. B.A. Harper Jr.

ASHEBORO -- The Rev. Burnie Alfine “Bill” Harper Jr., 75, of 1240 Henley Country Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Randolph County.
He was a retired Church of God minister, having served nine churches over the past 45 years. He received his Doctorate of Divinity in 1979, organized and pastored West Asheboro Church of God, was a Church of God district overseer and served on the state council.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at West Asheboro Church of God by the Revs. Gary E. Harper, Lawrence Leonhardt and Thurman Jenkins. Burial will follow in Oaklawn cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Robbins Harper of the home; four daughters, Billie Carol Sheeks of Kannapolis, Debbie H. Watson of Wilson, Vickie H. Cox and Theresa H. Staley, both of Asheboro; two sons, the Rev. Gary E. Harper of Henderson and Tony D. Harper of Asheboro; two sisters, Viola Massingill of Hampton, Va., and Barbara Rich of Asheboro; two brothers, Oris Harper and Boyce Lee Harper, both of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at West Asheboro Church of God and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to West Asheboro Church of God, 197 Lewallen Road, Asheboro, N.C. 27203.
Arrangements are by Ridge Funeral Home of Asheboro.

Cleo A. Johnson

HENDERSON -- Cleo Allen Johnson, 100, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home. She was a Vance County native, the daughter of the late Thomas and Rosa Satterwhite Allen and the widow of Willie B. Thomas.
She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1952.
Surviving is one brother, Joseph Allen Sr. of Henderson.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service. Other times, the family will be at the home of Ruth and Marsha Allen, 421 Sunnyview Road.
Viewing hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. today.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service of Henderson.

Howard M. Northington

HENDERSON -- Howard M. Northington, 81, of Henderson, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at his residence in Henderson. He was the son of the late Robert and Frances Turner Northington and the widower of Evelyn Vick Northington.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Henderson, owned and operated Henderson Music Co., and was known in Henderson as “Piccolo”.
Memorial services were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Henderson. A private interment will be held at a later date in the Oakwood cemetery in South Hill, Va.
Surviving are his sons, Robert L. Northington of Warrenton and Dennis M. Northington of Wilson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 179 Willow Oak Drive, Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation, Hospice of Henderson or the charity of your choice.

HENDERSON -- Willie Edward Pettaway, of 843 N. Garnett St., died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.

Winona C. Raby

OXFORD -- Winona Craig Raby, 83, formerly of 115 West College St., died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center. She was a native of the Cherokee Reservation, and the daughter of the late Frank and Elvira Hornbuckle Craig.
She was a long time home care attendant for many families in Granville County.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Knotts Grove cemetery by the Rev. Pat Cox.
Surviving are a half sister, Patricia Hornbuckle of Jackson County; and a half brother, George Craig of Swain County.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford prior to the graveside services.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Albert B. Redd

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- Albert Bailey Redd, 74, of Colonial Heights, Va., died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of North Carolina and the son of the late Roger Bailey Redd.
He served his country with the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II and was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church in Stovall.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Va., with Dr. John P. Mason and the Rev. R. Roland Powell officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Jettie Overby Redd; a son, Albert J. Redd of Colonial Heights, Va.; his mother, Bobbie Thomas Redd of Colonial Heights, Va.; and three sisters, Beulah Averrett of Chesterfield, Va., Nellie Beale of Clarksville, Tenn., and Barbara Ellen Hall of Colonial Heights, Va.; and two brothers, Geanie Redd of Clarksville, Tenn., and Wayne Redd of Ettrick, Va.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Bertha C. Ross

OXFORD -- Bertha Crowe Ross, 91, of 565 Hwy. No. 39 North, Selma, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., the daughter of the late Milton C. and Annie Lee Flowers Crowe and the widow of Henry Elmo Ross.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by Elmer Thomas L. Bailey III and Elmer Jose Resendiz. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are a daughter, Lorene R. Riggan of Selma; a son, Henry E. Ross Jr. of Raleigh; a sister, Charlotte Dickerson of Durham; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Mildred H. Taylor

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Mildred Harris Taylor, 88, of Melbourne, Fla., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. She was an Oxford native and the daughter of the late Euwell H. and Mattie Nut Harris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron “Doc” Taylor, and her second husband, Jack Caramatti.
She lived most of her adult life in the Pearl River-Nanuet, N.Y., area. She was a long-time employee of Rockland State Hospital in New York, N.Y., retiring in 1971.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are her sons, Byron “Bob” Taylor of Malabar, Fla., and Theodore “Ted” Taylor of BelAir, Md.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Bernice Wright

HENDERSON -- Bernice Wright, 71, a Vance County resident, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Vance Manor.
The family will be at the home of Geneva Gibson, 8430 U.S. 1-158 Hwy. in Middleburg.
Arrangements will be announced later by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service of Henderson.

John Hunter

WARRENTON -- John Hunter, 68, of Warrenton died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
