Bennett C. Bowden Jr.

HENDERSON -- Bennett Columbus Bowden, Jr., age 59, a resident of 90 Pine Ridge Trail, died Sunday, February 25, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
He was a native of Halifax County, N.C., and was the son of the late Bennett Columbus and Lessie Boone Bowden.
He was a quality control inspector at Air Control Inc. in Henderson and was the former owner and operator of Atlantic Electrical Contractors. He was a member of The Church of The Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Taylor Bowden of the home; one daughter Beverly Bowden-Smith of Birmingham Ala.; two sons, Bennett Todd Bowden of Nashville, Tenn., and Barry Keith Bowden of Marietta, Ga.; four sisters, Ruby Bowden Lewis of Shelbyville, Ky., Anne Bowden of Suffolk, Va., Doreatha Bowden Coley of Nashville, N.C. and Linda Bowden Horseman of Clayton, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Bridgit Colleen Bowden and Bennett Christopher Bowden.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
A private service will be held Wednesday at The Church of the Nazarene, by the Rev. Jud Compton. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association c/o Doug Byrom, P.O. Box 1609, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Hattie Carn

HENDERSON -- Hattie Carn, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.
The family will be at 329 East Andrews Ave.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Oliver N. Crocker

PRATTVILLE, ALA. -- Oliver Newton Crocker, 77, of Prattville, Ala., formerly of Siler City, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in Montgomery Hospital. He was the widower of Sally Crocker.
He was an antique dealer for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Brookdale Baptist Church by the Rev. Walter Jones. Burial will follow in Chatam Memorial Park cemetery.
Surviving are his daughter, Sylvia C. Knight of Prattville, Ala.; one son, Bobby Newton Crocker of Siler City; six grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Blanks of Williamsburg, Va.; two brothers, Herman Crocker of Chesapeake, Va., and Weston Crocker of Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Senior Citizens Department of the Brookdale Baptist Church in Siler City.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
Arrangements are by Prattville Memorial Chapel, Prattville, Ala.

Louise A. Frazier

LAWRENCEVILLE, VA. -- Mrs. Louise Ayscue Frazier, age 85, of Lawrenceville, Va., died Feb. 25, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Frazier was a retired employee of Virginia National Bank. She was the widow of Gerald W. Frazier and the daughter of the late William Henry and Lella Grissom Ayscue and is survived by four grandchildren, Catherine J. Frazier of Greenville S.C., Barbara F. Quinn and husband, John, of Hoover, Ala., Julie F. Clary and husband, Allen, of Battleboro, N.C., Robbie F. Pullen of Nashville, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janie A. Morgan of Kingston, Pa., and Miriam A. Falkner and husband, Nelson, of Henderson, N.C. She was predeceased by two sons, Gerald A. and Don L. Frazier.
The family received friends Monday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Va., where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at Liberty Vance United Church of Christ in Epsom, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church, Lawrenceville, Va. 23868.

Margaret D. Harris

OXFORD -- Margaret Downey Harris, 84, of 6012 Pinetown Road, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Granville County Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Phillip Betts. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Gladiola Hobbs of Piscataway, N.J., Annette Bergen of Newark, N.J., Joyce Bass of the home and Janice Harris of Oxford; four sons, Alvis Harris of the home, Calvin Harris and Jerry Harris, both of Oxford, and Alver Harris of Durham; one sister, Lavette Harris of Oxford; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Nannie Kearney

HENDERSON -- Nannie Kearney, of Guardian Care, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Eliza Allen and Ben Kearney.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnes Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving is a brother, William A. Kearney.
The family will be at the home of Mary Bullock at 1256 Walters St.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Badger Russell

WARRENTON -- Badger Russell, 88, of the Oine community, Norlina, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Elizabeth M.N. Shearin

WINSTON-SALEM -- Elizabeth Minor Nelson Shearin, 96, of Baptist Retirement Homes in Winston-Salem, formerly of Macon, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at her residence. She was born in Emory Gap, Tenn., and was the daughter of the Rev. Edward Rosser Nelson and Ellen Jackson Scott Nelson. She was the widow of Jasper Walton Shearin of Warren County.
She was reared in Henderson where she attended public schools. On Sept. 8, 1923, she married Jasper Walton Shearin. After her husband’s death, she left the ancestral Shearin home of Diamond Grove Plantation in Warren County and moved to a retirement community in St. Petersburg, Fla., where she resided until 1990 when, at age 85, she came to the retirement community of Brookridge in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Page S. Bladen of Vienna, Va., Anne S. Ross of Warren County and Ellen S. Bartlett of Arlington, Va.; three sons, Jasper W. “Jack” Shearin Jr. of Winston-Salem, Dr. Edward Nelson Shearin of Ellicott City, Md., and Dr. Guillaume Shearin of Redwood City, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gardner’s Baptist Church in Macon by the Rev. Tom Caverly, pastor.
Pallbearers will be great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on the day of the funeral.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Brookridge Retirement Home in Winston-Salem by Dr. Charles Edwards, pastor of College Park Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gardner’s Baptist Church, Rt. 1, Macon, N.C. 27551.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Larry D. Turner

MACON -- Larry D. Turner, 39, of Macon, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at his residence in Macon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Macon Second Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. Patricia Milam will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are his mother, Mary E. Turner of Macon; three sisters, Carolyn Crawley and Diane Turner, both of Richmond, Va., and Brenda Turner of Macon; and his grandfather, Thomas Turner of Warrenton.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Mrs. Mozel Fuller Watkins

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- Mrs. Mozel Fuller Watkins died peacefully in Johnston County Hospital surrounded by her family on February 24, 2001 from pancreatic cancer. She was 73 years old. She was diagnosed with her illness on Dec. 1, 2000. Heaven gained another angel the day God took her home.
She was born January 12, 1928 the seventh of nine children to Troy D. Fuller and Oie Kearney Fuller of Epsom, N.C. Her father was a farmer, and her Mother was a housewife. She attended school in Epsom but her greatest knowledge came from her Mother’s teaching of a strong sense of family.
On July 5, 1949, she married William Lee Watkins at Calvary Baptist Church in Raleigh, N.C. From that marriage three daughters were born. She became a dedicated military housewife and Mother to her children. In 1960 she moved back to Henderson, N.C. and became a stay at home Mom. After her children were grown she completed her schooling at Granville Community College, earning the degree of Early Childhood Specialists. She worked for the next ten years for the Head Start program until the program ended. She then worked at Roses in Henderson, N.C. in various positions for fifteen years, retiring at the age of 70.
She was admired for her flawless beauty, her grace and her style. She faced adversity with tremendous strength and courage. She was a friend to all that knew her. She never complained but instead chose to see the humorous side to life’s situations.
A strong believer in her faith, she joined the New Bethel Baptist Church in Epsom in 1938, where the family home was. She then moved her membership to Bible Baptist Church in 1975 and attended for twenty-three years straight never missing a Sunday. After moving to Smithfield in 1998 to live with her daughter, Ms. Jerry Lee Watkins, she attended Life-Way Ministries of Smithfield, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her Father, Troy D. Fuller of Epsom, N.C. in 1948; her mother, Oie Kearney Fuller of Henderson, N.C. in 1961; her brother, Wimo Crawford Fuller in 1954 and his wife, Daisy, in 1987, both of Henderson; her brother, Jasper Clair Fuller of Henderson, N.C. in 1979; her brother, Garland Hocutt Fuller and his wife, Ora, of Henderson, N.C. in 1963; her sister, Ernestine Fuller Short in 1999 and her husband, Oscar, in 1980, both Henderson, N.C.; her brother, Joseph Troy Fuller of Graham, N.C. in 1985; also her brother, Raymond Foriest Fuller of New London, Connecticut in March 2000.
She is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in law, Ms. Jerry Lee Watkins of Smithfield, N.C.; Mrs. Theresa Watkins Daniel and her husband, Jim, of Raleigh, N.C.; and Mrs. Shirley W. Watkins and her husband, Scott, of Wake Forest, N.C.
She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Leona Fuller Bost and her husband, Ralph, of Columbia, S.C.; her brother, Mr. Roger Fuller and his wife, Maybre, of Henderson, N.C.; plus three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Annie Mae Fuller of Henderson, N.C., Mrs. Mary Rose Fuller of Graham, N.C., Mrs. Margaret Fuller of New London, Connecticut, plus numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The service will be held at Bible Baptist Church in Henderson, N.C., on Tuesday, February 27, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and will be officiated by the Rev. Wilbert Horton and Pastor Sherrod Johnson of Life-Way Ministries.
Serving as pallbearers will be Wade Short, Donnie Short, Adrian Bost, Troy Fuller, J.W. Fuller, Ray Fuller, R.E. Fuller, Dalton Williamson, and Michael Williamson.
Burial will follow at Liberty Vance United Church cemetery, located in Epsom, N.C. After burial, the family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Fuller at 1600 Graham Avenue in Henderson, N.C.
Her daughters would especially like to thank Hospice and the entire staff at Johnston County Hospital for their endearing support during the most difficult time.

Laura A. Clark

HENDERSON -- Laura Abbott Clark, 66, of 2501 Broad St., Richmond, Va., died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Melvin W. Abbott Sr. and Nellie Hight Abbott.
She was a retired nurse.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Steve Jones. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery in Kittrell.
Surviving are two daughters, Jane C. Ayscue of Timberlake and Bonnie C. Coley of Richmond; two sisters, Mary Abbott Sizemore of Oxford and Phyllis Abbott Jones of Stovall; three brothers, Harold G. Abbott of Raleigh and Ted H. Abbott and Phillip A. Abbott, both of Franklinton; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Mary A. Sizemore, 510 Hancock St., Oxford.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Gary Ayscue, Ray Ayscue, Reuben West, Keith Jones, Brian Jones and David Carrier.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

George W. Gordon III

BUFFALO JUNCTION, Va. -- George William Gordon III, 59, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a native of Buffalo Junction and the son of George William Gordon Jr. and the late Lillian Woltz Gordon.
He graduated from Bluestone High and obtained his bachelor of science degree from Virginia Tech, where he met his first wife, Anne. He was a member of Clarksville Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons. He owned and operated Aarons Creek Farms and was a partner in Gordon Brothers Farming Operation. He served on the board of Cooperative Supply Inc. and was active in the Sandy Fork Hunting Club.
Memorial services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Clarksville Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Bohannon officiating. By Gordon’s request, his cremated remains will be scattered on the family farm.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife, Anne Hughes Gordon; two sons, Gregory Vernon Gordon of Clarksville, Va., and Eric Matthew Gordon of Buffalo Junction; one sister, Judith Gordon Elliott of Clarksville; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home of Clarksville.

Joseph C. Mann

MANNS HARBOR -- Joseph Caroon Mann, 99, of Manns Harbor died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Manns Harbor and the son of Samuel Edward and Virginia Dare Hayman Mann.
He was the retired president of McCrackin Oil Co. in Henderson. He was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Manteo Masonic Lodge No. 521 and the Sudan Temple of New Bern, and a past member of the Vance County Board of Education and the Rotary Club. He attended Kings Business College.
Surviving are his wife, Alfreda Hunter Mann; a stepdaughter, Betty Lynn Allen of San Antonio; a stepson, Taylor Davenport of Manteo; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Tosto. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were the men of the church and Dr. Mitch Jenkins.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Twi-ford Funeral Home and other times at the home of Billie and Denise Mann, 6172 Highway 64/264, Manns Harbor.
Memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 95, Manns Harbor, N.C. 27953.
Arrangements were by Twiford Funeral Home’s Colony Chapel in Manteo.

Laura Paschall

HENDERSON -- Laura Paschall, 81, of Guardian Care in Henderson died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Badger Russell

WARRENTON -- Badger Russell, 88, of the Oine community in Norlina died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. O.B.J. Burson will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ernestine Russell; one daughter, Annie Russell Kearney of Tinton Falls, N.J.; one son, Walter Russell of Lithonia, Ga.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Annie Alston of Portsmouth, Va., Beatrice Seward and Sallie Hendrick, both of Baltimore, and Mary Upshaw of Orange, N.J.; and two brothers, Edward Russell of Metuchen, N.J., and Alexander Russell of Baltimore.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton until taken to the church one hour before the services Thursday.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

George V. Dickerson

OXFORD -- George V. “Shorty” Dickerson, 72, of 309 S. Country Club Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late John H. and Louise Gresham Dickerson.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was retired as shop foreman from Oxford Implement Co. and had worked for the Masonic Home for Children.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Revs. Carolyn Sims and Cam Ford. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Barker Dickerson, and two sisters, Bernice D. Daniel and Juanita D. Woodlief, both of Oxford.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 107 Pine Tree Drive, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the family home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home.

Trumilla H. Estes

HENDERSON -- Trumilla H. Estes, 83, of 4155 Shock-Overton Road died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Center. She was a Granville County native.
She was a member of the Olive Grove Baptist Church, where was part of the Pastor’s Aid, Missionary Circle, Senior Choir, Friendship Gospel Choir and Consolidated Mixed Choir.
Surviving are her husband, Leon Estes; two daughters, Sarah Allen and Eloise Daye, both of Oxford; four sons, Bennie Hester of New Jersey, Alvis Hester and Donnell Taborn, both of Oxford, and Sylvester Taborn of Durham; one sister, Lillie Mae Williams of Oxford; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.
