William C. Hicks

PIKEVILLE -- William Casper Hicks, 83, of 865 Airport Road died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. He was a Wayne County native and the son of the late Tavie Frank Hicks and Mary Ellen Scott Hicks.
He was a life member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, where he was a former member and honorary member of the church board and was secretary of the adult Sunday school class. He was a member of the Pikeville Junior Order and was a graduate of Pikeville High School. He was a successful farmer and had been recognized for his outstanding crops and livestock.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church by the Revs. Gerald Massey, Rose Hicks and Horace Ferguson. Entombment will be in Pikeville cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Geraldine Forehand Hicks; a daughter, Joy Hicks Williams of Pikeville; two sons, Ray Hicks and J.D. Hicks, both of Pikeville; a sister, Mary Ellen Hicks Powell of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, N.C. 27863, or to the Johnston Cancer Center, P.O. Box 1376, 509 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield, N.C. 27577.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Arrangements are by Seymour Funeral Home of Goldsboro.

William V. Perry

HENDERSON -- William Vincent Perry, 44, of 2120 Oak Ridge Church Road, Kittrell, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his residence. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services.

Earlie J. Taborn

OXFORD -- Earlie J. Taborn, 87, of 111 Watkins St. died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville County native.
He was a member of Blooming Star Lodge No. 53.
Surviving are his wife, Rebecca W. Taborn; three daughters, Helen T. Oakley of Oxford, Marianna T. Wilkerson of Paterson, N.J., and Glorious Marie T. Bass of Allentown, Pa.; two sons, James E. Taborn of Paterson and Edward Taborn of Morristown, N.J.; two brothers, L.W. Taborn and Lonnie Taborn of Florida; 17 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the New Light Baptist Church. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in the Cheatham cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Joseph Alston Sr.

WARRENTON — Joseph “Joe” Alston Sr., 88, of the Red Hill community died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fork Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Inez. The Rev. Luther Alston Jr., pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Shocco Chapel Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in the Parktown community in Warrenton.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Alston Jr. of Warrenton; three grandchildren; and one sister, Queen Alston of Warrenton.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Mattie O. Crawford

WARRENTON — Mattie Oliver Crawford, 49, of the Marmaduke community died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

James H. Hanks Sr.

HENDERSON — James “Bro” Henry Hanks Sr., 66, of 527 Grant St. died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Henry and Evelyn Harris Hanks.
He attended Vance County public schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired employee of Softspun Knitting Mills after more than 40 years of service.
He was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church, where he served as trustee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flat Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. William Everett, Dr. C.B. Walton and the Rev. Waverly Mills Jr. Interment will follow in the Basenfield cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Algene J. Hanks; five daughters, Carolyn Brown, Hilda Gill, Terry Hanks-Alston, Gina Hanks-Mitchell, all of Henderson, and Eunice Taylor of Rahway, N.J.; two sons, James H. Hanks Jr. and Byron Hanks, both of Henderson; two sisters, Georgia Judkins of Henderson and Louvenia Coleman of Raleigh; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Randy Perry, Milton Hanks, Michael Hanks, Lonnie Hawley, Cornelius Gill Jr. and Derrick Hawkins. Floral bearers will be Barbara Hanks-Davis, Jackie Hawkins, Carla Owens, Nikki Lyon, Deborah Perry, Carissa White, Letha Vass, Audrey Hawley, Sylvia Smith and Paula Dunston.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Bennie Jones III

HENDERSON — Baby Bennie Jones III, 3 months old, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Durham County to Vanessa Bullock Jones and Bennie Jones Jr.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Garden Inc.
Surviving are one sister, Breona Jones of Henderson; maternal grandparents Sylvia Bullock and William Bullock of Henderson; paternal grandparents Mary Terry and William Terry of Henderson; and great-grandmother Lizzie Taylor of Kittrell.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. today.
The family will receive friends at the residence of the parents, Bennie and Vanessa Jones, 265 Regina Lane in the Williamsboro community.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Michael G. Kita

HENDERSON — Michael George Kita, 76, a resident of 296 Gholson Ave., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Duke Medical Center.
He was a native of Uniontown, Pa., and was the son of the late George and Anna Babonek Kita.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He received a master’s degree in education from Boston University and was a retired headmaster at Kerr Lake School and principal at Carver Elementary School. Before moving to Henderson, he was headmaster of the lower school of Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn., and headmaster of Belvidere County Day School in Chelmsford, Mass.
He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry.
The Rev. Harrison Simons will lead a memorial service Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Grimes Kita; one daughter, Elizabeth Wolf of Houston; three sons, Chris-topher Kita of Arlington, Mass., Jefferson Kita of Newton, Mass., and Jonathon Kita of Chesapeake, Va.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Kita.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 974, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.

William J. Midkiff Jr.

HENDERSON — William Jackson “Jackie” Midkiff Jr., 67, of 226 Oak St., Apartment E, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his home.
He was born in Princeton, W.Va., and was the son of Ruth Selvey Midkiff Bartlett of Henderson and the late William Jackson Midkiff Sr.
He was medically retired from the state of Virginia.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Hoyle.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Victoria Lynn Midkiff England of Orlando, Fla.; one son, Michael Scott Midkiff of Milton, N.J.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother at 2351 Oxford Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart
Association, c/o Doug Byrom, Centura Bank, P.O. Box 1609, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary Hargrove Allen

OXFORD -- Mrs. Mary Hargrove Allen, a native of Granville County, died Friday in Mount Vernon, N.Y. She was the daughter of the late Robert L. Hargrove and Mary E. Harris Hargrove.
She was a graduate of Mary Potter Academy and received a B.S. degree in education from Fayetteville State College. She later moved to New York, where she received a Master’s Degree in Education. She taught in the Westchester County Schools for many years and retired in 1990.
She was married to the late Jessie Allen.
Surviving are four children, Tressie, Ronald, Donald and Jessica; two sisters, Ms. Janie H. Ingram and Mrs. Lenora H. Harris (Eddie), both of Oxford; four brothers, Mr. John H. Hargrove (Marthalea), Santa Clara, Calif., Mr. George W. Hargrove (Helen), Mr. Charlie L. Hargrove (Shirley), and Mr. Thomas Terry (Rosalyn), all of Oxford.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 12 noon at Grace Baptist Church, 52 S. Sixth Ave., Mount Vernon, N.Y.

Fay B. Dean

OXFORD -- Fay Blackley Dean, 78, of 4593 Highway 96 died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001. Arrangements will be announced later by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home.

Mary L. Fuller

OXFORD -- Mary Lizzie Fuller, 86, of 412 Harrison St. in Passaic, N.J., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, N.J.
Arrangements will be announced later by Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.

William V. Perry

HENDERSON -- William Vincent Perry, 44, of 2120 Oak Ridge Church Road, Kittrell, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Emma Carolyn Perry Crudup.
He was educated in the Vance County public school system and was employed for several years with Ronnie White’s Tire Service Center in Youngsville.
He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Revs. Richard Batts and Harry Williams and Pastor Alphonso Smith. Burial will follow in the Jesse Kittrell Memorial cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Fuller Perry; two daughters, Emma Natasha Perry and Valencia Rychelle Perry, both of the home; two sisters, Zena Daye and Carolyn Ann Crudup, both of Kittrell; and three brothers, Larry Crudup, Robert Crudup and Samuel Crudup, all of Kittrell.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Roy Kingsberry, Oddie Pernell, Wayne Hayes, Milton Perry, Michael Champion, Frankie Champion and Stanley Royster. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Person, Elaine Kersey, Nathan Person and William Taylor.
Floral bearers will be Shirlina Burwell, Geraldine Alston, Sharon Gill, Loretha Hawkins, Lisa Person, Brenda Rhem, Thelma Lynch, Clintonya Young, Bernice Alston, Gertrude Taylor, Vallie Jiggetts and Amanda Dawson.

Fay B. Dean

OXFORD -- Fay Blackley Dean, 78, of 4593 Highway 96 South died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Herbert and Minnie Ransball Blackley.
She was a member of Knotts Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Leggett’s Department Store as a sales clerk.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Tony Futrell. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are one son, Beverly Dean of Oxford; one daughter, Rebecca D. Wilkins of Oxford; one sister, June B. Bowling of Roseville; one brother, Ralph C. Blackley of Franklinton; and two grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation, c/o Anita Harrison, 705 Broad St., Durham, N.C. 27703.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lawrence and Rebecca Wilkins, 4599 Highway 96 South in Oxford.

HENDERSON -- Thomas Hargrove Jr., 64, of Queens, N.Y., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at his residence. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Center Grove Baptist Church in Red Springs. The Rev. Samuel Norman Sr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Kinika Semetra Moates and April Moates, both of Stedman; one son, Bennie Moates of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Eva Mae Tyler of Philadelphia, Peggy Ann Fisher of Washington, Sylvia Ann Barbara Kyle of Ocala, Fla., Jacqueline Fitzgerald Crawford of Laurel, Md., and Gloria Marie Crawford of Mount Rainer, Md.; four brothers, Willie Dorsey Crawford Jr. of Washington, Lorenzo James Crawford Sr. of Warrenton, Milton Ronnie Crawford and Demetrius Wayne Crawford of Mitchellville, Md.
The body will be on view from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Boyd’s Funeral Services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton and L.E. Floyd Funeral Home of Red Springs.

WARRENTON -- Roosevelt Evans, 66, of the Snow Hill community, Warrenton, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.

PASSAIC, N.J. -- Mary Lizzie Fuller, 86, of 412 Harrison St., Passaic, N.J., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Paterson, N.J. She was a Granville County native.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Union A.M.E. Zion Church in Wilton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Otha Harris of Creedmoor; two grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Betts and Son Funeral Home Inc.
