Willie D. Martin Jr.

OINE -- Willie “Bill” Dalton Martin Jr., 70, of Norlina, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of Willie D. and Mabel Hayes Martin.
He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Eggleston Martin of Norlina; four sons, Michael Martin of Arcola, Wayne D. Martin, Bobby L. Martin and Randy D. Martin, all of Norlina; three daughters, Faye M. Gill of Henderson, Vickie L. Martin and Lisa M. Brannock, both of Norlina; three sisters, Edna M. Faulkner of Henderson, Everlyna M. Norwood and Myrtice M. Richardson, both of Norlina; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Blaylock Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Warren Cash. Interment will follow in the Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in Oine.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Leatha J. Solomon

WARRENTON -- Leatha Jane Solomon, 80, of East Orange, N.J., formerly of Warrenton, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in East Orange.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Bessie W. White

WARRENTON -- Bessie Wynona White, 98, of Warrenton, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late Bule B. and Bessie Rhudy Dorough in Leeds, Ala. She was the widow of Robert Thomas White.
She was a member of Wise Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wise cemetery.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Willie T. Yarborough

CENTER MORICHES, N.Y. -- Willie Thomas Yarborough, 68, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Patchogue, N.Y. He was a native of Henderson and the son of the late George and Florence Clark of Henderson.
He was a member of the Bell A.M.E. Zion Church of Center Moriches. In his late years, he was under watch care of the Rev. William J. Smith, pastor, who appointed him to pastor’s steward. He served in that position until his health failed.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Bell A.M.E. Zion Church in Center Moriches, N.Y., by the Rev. William J. Smith, pastor. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in East Moriches, N.Y.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Yarborough of Center Moriches, N.Y.; his daughter, Alice Marie Robinson of Center Moriches, N.Y.; one brother, Horace Vann of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Emma Lou Henderson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Curtis Spruill, David James, Vernon Faine, Stanley Sneed, John Hill, James Pegram and Ronnie Green.
Arrangements were by Wesche Funeral Home of Center Moriches, N.Y.

Grace S. Farris

HENDERSON -- Grace Stainback Farris, 89, a former resident of 110 Red Bud Drive, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 6, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a native of Granville County, the daughter of the late Eugene Tucker and Pattie Poythress Stainback, and the widow of Fred B. Farris.
She was retired from the former Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Co., where she was a telephone operator, and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Charles M. Cook.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Ann B. Finch

LOUISBURG -- Ann B. Finch, 69, of Louisburg died Monday, February 5, 2001, in Wake Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Finch.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Corinth Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Jo Ann F. Strickland of Louisburg and Jean F. Maske of Wake Forest; one sister, Dolly Hinton of Henderson; one brother, Edward Best of Henderson; and one granddaughter, Hope Maske.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lancaster Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to Corinth Baptist Church, 4582 U.S. Highway 401 N, Louisburg, N.C. 27549, where she was a treasurer for 25 years.
Arrangements are by Lancaster Funeral Home of Louisburg.

Thomas Hargrove Jr.

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Thomas Hargrove Jr., 64, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at his residence in Queens. He was a Vance County native.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Island Hill United Church of Christ in Virginia by the Rev. C.A. Osborne. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Brendell Hargrove of North Lauderdale, Fla., and Ronald Hargrove of Cambria Heights, N.Y.; his father, Thomas Hargrove Sr. of Henderson; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson and other times at the residence of Thomas Hargrove Sr., 514 E. Rockspring St.
The body will lie in state at Wright Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m. today.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Margaret W. Lassiter

HENDERSON -- Margaret Wynne Lassiter, 51, of 2709 Southerland Mill Road died Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late George W. and Lucy Parham Wynne. She was a part-time school bus driver for Aycock School and was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Johnson Gupton. Burial will follow in the Island Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Franklin “Hubba” Lassiter; three daughters, Amanda Lassiter, Pamela Lassiter Stevenson and Angela Lassiter Hedgepeth, all of Henderson; two sisters, June Wynne Adcock of Henderson and Peggy Wynne Henson of Crossnore, N.C.; two brothers, Charlie Wynne of Henderson and William Wynne of Silver Spring, Md.; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Thomas Lassiter, Jerry Lassiter, Curtis Coley, Tony Sanford, Darrell Wynne and Tommy Ellington.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mattie H. Renn

HENDERSON -- Mattie Elizabeth Hayes Renn, 80, of Route 2 Box 342 in the Epsom community of Henderson died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in the Franklin Regional Medical Center. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of Gertie Dickerson Hayes of Louisburg and the late Otha Lee Hayes.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Timothy J. Burgess.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Andrew Green Renn; a sister, Jessie H. Stegall of Henderson; and a brother, Otha L. Hayes Jr. of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home on Southerland Mill Road.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Alyce H. Edwards

HENDERSON -- Alyce Hoyle Edwards, 85, formerly of 141 N. Oliver Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Arthur Howard and Helen Isobel Milne Hoyle. She was the widow of Horace L. Edwards.
She was a retired bookkeeper at Southern National Bank. She was a lifelong member of Carey Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and the Joy Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Carey Baptist Church by the Rev. John Hackworth. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Gladys H. Duncan of Queensland, Australia, and Ruth H. Hobgood of Smithfield.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Steve and Carolyn Ball, 236 Carver School Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Scott Ball, Robert Ellington, Gill Hobgood, Jasper Tharrington, Ronnie Lynn, Eric Hoyle, Steve Ball, Don Donadio and Arch Hoyle.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Carey Baptist Church Building Fund, 1295 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Roosevelt Evans

WARRENTON -- Roosevelt Evans, 66, of the Snow Hill community died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Snow Hill Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. A.F. Horton, pastor, will officiate. Burial with full military rites will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Giannelli Evans; two daughters, Tracey Evans of Fayetteville and LaSandra Williams of Raleigh; two grandchildren; and one sister, Willie B. Pollard of Durham.
The body will be on view at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Luke M. Harris

DURHAM -- Luke M. Harris, 76, of 717 Martin St. died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
He was a member of the Mount Zion United Holy Church, where he served as a deacon, member of the trustee board and church treasurer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Hicks Harris; one daughter, Betty J. Harris of the home; one son, George Harris of Durham; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion United Holy Church by the Rev. Patrick Jackson. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors one hour before the funeral at the church.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.

Joseph R. Thompson

WARRENTON -- Joseph Ray “Joe” Thompson, 40, of the Bronx, N.Y., formerly of Durham, has died in the Bronx. He was the husband of Charlene Montague Thompson, formerly of Palmer Spring, Va.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Viola W. Boyd

WARRENTON -- Viola Watson Boyd, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at St. Peters Hospital in Albany, N.Y. She was the daughter of the late Wesley and Annie Watson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.
The body will be on view at Boyd’s Funeral Services until the hour of services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Eva S. Holtzman

RIDGEWAY -- Eva Seaman Holtzman, 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at her residence. She was a Manson native and the daughter of the late John Jacob Seaman and Ruth D. Champion Seaman. She was the widow of Christian Fred Holtzman Sr.
She was former postmaster in Ridgeway. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she was Sunday school teacher for 50 years, a member of the Warren County 4-H Leaders Association for 50 years, a member of Zion Cooperative Extension Club and State Crime Prevention for 50 years. She also was president of the Ridgeway Community Club and chairman of the Social Service Department of Warren County. She was a member of NAPUS, the National Association of Retired Postmasters, the board of the Ridgeway Fire Department, the Warren County Home and the Community Care Block Grant Advisory Committee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Hubert Rightmeyer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four sons, Christian Fred Holtzman Jr. of Santee, S.C., Reuben Glenn Holtzman Sr. of Ridgeway, George William Holtzman of Hinesville, Ga., and Caiborne Rufus Holtzman of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Natalie S. Mitchell of Henderson and Lena S. Bender of Ridgeway; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bernard Holtzman, Carl Robert Bender, Richard Bender, Marshall Seaman, Lacy Fogleman, Bruce Jordan, Johnnie Brauer and Thomas Holtzman.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 2596, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Satur-day at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Sarah F. Newcomb

HENDERSON -- Sarah Fowler Newcomb, 95, a lifelong resident of Henderson, died Thursday, February 8, 2001.
Born April 22, 1905, in Burlington, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry Lee and Zebulon Lena Hinnant Fowler. She was the widow of William Theophilus Newcomb.
Mrs. Newcomb was a homemaker and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life will be remembered for her generosity to all.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Elmwood cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charles Cook.
Surviving are a daughter, Martha N. Darden of Lawrenceville, Georgia; a son, William A. Newcomb Sr. of Henderson; three grandsons, Dr. Bruce V. Darden II of Charlotte, N.C., George W. Darden of Avondale Estates, Georgia, and Dr. W. Andrew Newcomb Jr. of Henderson; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Letha J. Solomon

WARRENTON -- Letha Jane Solomon, 80, of East Orange, N.J., formerly of Warrenton, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Carson F. Jones Jr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mitchell Chapel Baptist Church cemetery in Henderson.
Surviving are two daughters, Carrie Massenburg of East Orange, N.J., and Gracie Crudup of Irvington, N.J.; two sons, Roger Lee Solomon of Warrenton and Lenzo Solomon Sr. of Nutley, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters, Bonnie Champion and Katie Lee Kearney, both of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Louise Ayscue Thompson

WAKE FOREST -- Louise Ayscue Thompson, 83, of Louisburg Road died Thursday, February 8, 2001, at Raleigh Community Hospital.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Sarah Jane Hicks Ayscue and Warner Norfleet Ayscue. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis D. Thompson.
Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, February 10, 2001, from the Rolesville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery in Epsom.
Surviving is a daughter, Martha T. Watkins, and her husband, Willie M., of Wake Forest; sons R. Bruce Thompson and his wife, Neta E., of Raleigh and Jackie E. and Donna Y. Thompson of Wake Forest; sisters Sarah A. Medlin of Wake Forest and Katherine A. Watkins of Raleigh; grandchildren Renee W. Dixon and her husband, Mitchell, R. Bruce Thompson II and his wife, Heather M., Michael D. Thompson and his wife, Molly B., Jennie T. Gupton and her husband, Eric, and Jackie “Jay” Thompson Jr. and his wife, Molly S.; great-grandchildren Courtney Dixon, Elly Thompson, Grace Battle Thompson and Tyler Gupton.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-8:30 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home, and all other times at the home of Jackie Thompson on Louisburg Road, Wake Forest.
Flowers are accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Rolesville Baptist Church, Building for the Future Fund, P.O. Box 185, Rolesville, N.C. 27571.
