John Hunter

WARRENTON -- John Hunter, 68, of Warrenton, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ in the Drewry community of Manson. The Rev. Charlie Leath, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one brother, Leonard Hunter of Warrenton; and nine stepchildren, Lucy Hooper of St. Petersburg, Fla., Patsy Coleman of Brooklyn, N.Y., Paulette Rivera of Westbury, N.Y., Carolyn Milland of Uniondale, N.Y., Deborah Philander of East Hartford, Conn., Pamela Coleman of Blakeslee in Philadelphia, Evelyn Johnson of Fayetteville, George Coleman of the Bronx, N.Y., and Paul Coleman of Warrenton.
The family will receive relatives and friends today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel, where the body will be until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Neulan Prewitt

YOUNGSVILLE -- Neulan Prewitt, 77, of 4630 Highway 401 South, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center.
He served 12 years as a police officer in Hazel Park, Mich., and retired from General Motors in the research-and-development division.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Highland cemetery in Williamsburg, Ky.
Surviving are his wife, Lila Capps Prewitt; three sons, Jerry Prewitt of Apple Valley, Calif., Robert Prewitt of Youngsville and Ted Prewitt of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 708, Charlotte, N.C. 28210.
Arrangements are by L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory.

Larry D. Turner

MACON -- Larry D. Turner, 39, of Macon died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at his residence in Macon.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Eunice B. Vickers

HENDERSON -- Eunice Banks Vickers, 60, formerly a resident of Henderson, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at 2217 Parkside Drive in Durham.
She was a registered nurse.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. Melvin Ballard. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Yvonne V. Jordan of Durham; one son, Louis Vickers Jr. of Butner; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at 2217 Parkside Drive in Durham. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Bradley S. Watkins

HENDERSON -- Bradley Scott Watkins, 2-day-old son of Amy Renee Watkins of 310 Main St., died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Charles Ray Anderson.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his maternal grandparents, James C. and Linda Reid Watkins of Henderson, and his maternal great-grandfather, Herbert Reid of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Deborah H. Watkins

CAMDER, S.C. -- Deborah Harris Watkins, 46, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, after fatal injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Camder.
Arrangements will be announced later by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Walter L. Alston

HENDERSON -- Walter Lee Alston, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at his residence in Washington, D.C. He was a Vance County native.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Jua-nita Alston, 155 Welcome Ave.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

Elba Louise McGowan Banzet

WARRENTON -- Elba Louise McGowan Banzet, age 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and master teacher, passed away February 22, 2001. Born to Adrian Kinsey McGowan and Lucy White McGowan, July 5, 1907, she spent her youth in Greenville.
She graduated from East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University, with honors in 1930. A firm believer in education, she helped to put all six of her younger brothers and sisters through college during the difficult Depression years. Moving to Warrenton in the early 1930s, she taught English and French at John Graham High School for more than thirty years. Affectionately called the “little general” for her high standard of behavior and performance, she was much loved for her dedication, compassion and ready counsel. In retirement, Mrs. Banzet remained active in community life and maintained to the end a special bond with young people and those in need.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Warrenton attorney Frank Broadhurst Banzet.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Broadhurst Banzet, and his wife, Pamela Hughes Banzet, and their two daughters, Helen Hughes Banzet and Kinsey Elizabeth Banzet; and her daughter, Lucy White Banzet von Heiland, and her husband, Theodore Pamintuan von Heiland, and their children, Katherine Paz von Heiland, Elizabeth Rose von Heiland and Frank Banzet von Heiland.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2001, by Rev. Steve Edwards and Dr. Orville Wintermute at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd cemetery in Ridgeway, N.C.
The family will receive friends at their home on Graham Street, Warrenton. Memorials may be made to Hospice Staff Builders.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mary Day

BUTNER -- Mary Alice Wheeler Day, 61, of 115 W. C St. died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at her home. She was a Wake County native and the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Gussie Faulkner Wheeler.
She was medically retired from Mayville Metal.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Steve Pierce. Burial will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery on Highway 96.
Surviving are her husband, William S. Day; four sisters, Annie W. Wade of Durham, Alma W. Swenk of Zellwood Station, Fla., Colene W. Holland of Kenly and Ethel W. Ayscue of Butner; and two brothers, Roy Wheeler of Wake Forest and Brooks Wheeler of Norfolk, Va.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Nannie Kearney

HENDERSON -- Nannie Kearney, 87, of the Guardian Care Nursing facility has died.
Garnes Funeral Services will announce arrangements.

Deborah H. Watkins

OXFORD -- Deborah Harris Watkins, 46, of 1328 Sumter Highway in Camden, S.C., was killed in an automobile accident Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Jesse B. Harris and the late Hazel Wright Harris.
She was a member of Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church and vice president of Resolute Equipment Co. in Camden.
The Rev. Tony Futrell and the Rev. John Yount will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Sun-day at Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Sonny Watkins; two sons, Al Parham and Kevin B. Parham, both of Oxford; one brother, Dennis Harris of Raleigh; three sisters, Wendy H. Finch of Raleigh and Shelley H. Noblin and Pam H. Watkins, both of Oxford; and three grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted, or me-morials may be made to the Mul-tiple Sclerosis Society, Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 3101 Industrial Drive, Raleigh, N.C.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Al and Melinda Parham, 2720 Davis Chapel Road, Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

David L. Wortham

FUQUAY-VARINA -- David Lee “Bill” Wortham, 71, died Wednesday, February 21, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2001, at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann Wortham; daughter Angela Rhodes and husband Mike of Fuquay-Varina; son Danny Wortham and companion Lisa Terracino of Fuquay-Varina; his precious pride and joy, granddaughter Ashley Rhodes; sisters Katie Stephenson of Raleigh, Annie Eason of Fuquay-Varina, Lorena Cooper of Fayetteville, Louise Norwood of Henderson, Ora Mann and Elizabeth Wilson, both of Florida.
The family received friends on Friday, February 23, from 7-9 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Piney Grove Baptist Church, 3217 Piney Grove-Wilbon Road, Fuquay-Varina, N.C. 27526.

Wallace E. Bowers

NORLINA -- Mr. Wallace Edward Bowers, age 65, of Norlina died Saturday, February 24, at the VA Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Mr. Bowers was a member of Norlina Baptist Church, a retired employee of Roses Stores Warehouse in Henderson and a U.S. Army veteran.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at the Norlina Baptist Church in Norlina, N.C., at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Carlyle Hall. Burial will follow in the Bear Swamp Baptist Church cemetery in Littleton, N.C.
Mr. Bowers is survived by: one daughter, Mrs. Tammy B. King of Henderson, N.C.; one son, Tony Bowers of Henderson, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Martha B. Overby of Norlina, N.C.; and one brother, Dan Bowers of Raleigh, N.C. Two grandchildren, Johnathan & Benjamin King, also survive.
Memorials may be made to: Norlina Baptist Church, Box 367, Norlina, N.C., or the Norlina Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Town of Norlina, N.C. 27563.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Sallie O. King

HENDERSON -- Sallie Jane Overton King, 86, formerly of St. Andrew’s Church Road, Henderson, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Moses Sherman and Nora Sadler Overton. She was the widow of David Winston King Sr.
She was retired from Roses Stores Inc., where she was employed for 15 years. She was a member of Flat Rock United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Pam Gilliam. Burial will follow in the Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Mae K. Hunt of Oxford and Rebecca K. Faulkner of Henderson; two sons, W. Eugene King and David W. King Jr., both of Henderson; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Eugene and Elsie King, 1055 St. Andrews Church Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Billy Overton, C.T. Overton, Michael Overton, Mel Overton, Randall King, David King III, Allen Faulkner, Lewis Hunt and James Culbreth. The Happy Days group at Flat Rock United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

James L. Overby

STOVALL -- James L. Overby, 69, of 406 Owen St. died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native.
He was a retired farmer.
Surviving are three brothers, Sam Overby and Harold Overby, both of Stovall, and Allen Overby of Henderson; and three sisters, Mary Taylor, Rebecca Oakley and Grace Green, all of Stovall.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Betts & Son Chapel by the Rev. Terry Taylor. Burial will follow in the Whetstone Church cemetery.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Betts & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Walter L. Alston

HENDERSON -- Walter Lee Alston, 76, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at his residence in Washington, D.C. He was a native of Henderson and the son of the late James and Readie Hayes Alston.
He was a World War II veteran and after moving to Washington, D.C., for 39 years he worked for William A. Hazel Construction until he retired.
He was a member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he served on the usher board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rowland Chapel Baptist Church by the Minister Robert Bonds, with the Rev. Isaac Thomas assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mary F. Alston of Henderson; four daughters, Annie Allen of Bronx, N.Y., Barbara Royster of Henderson, Annetta Alston and Brenda Blanton, both of Washington, D.C.; five sons, James Alston and Melvin Alston, both of Henderson, Johnny Alston of Washington, D.C., Walter Alston of Clinton, Md., Wallace Alston of Herdon, Va.; one brother, Jesse Fogg of Franklin County; five sisters, Martha Currin of New Jersey, Annie Mae Rainey and Lottie Hughes of Henderson, Hettierene Davis and Cora Green of Franklin County; 28 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of James Alston, 155 Welcome Ave.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

Carrie Arrington

WARRENTON -- Carrie Arrington, 106, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Baltimore, Md. She was the daughter of the late Silas and Lizzie Cheek.
Arrangements will be announced later by Brown’s Funeral Services Inc.

Jannie G.E. Blair

OXFORD -- Jannie Grey Elliott Blair, 88, of 108 Mooreland Drive, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Aucy Lee Elliott Sr. and Nona Wilkerson Elliott. She was the widow of William R. “Bill” Blair Sr.
She was a member of Mt. Creek Baptist Church and was retired from 7-11 Food Stores.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Lamar Wheeler. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Mildred B. Cottrell of Greensboro, Ethel B. Ellis and Katherine B. Cash, both of Roxboro, and Rebecca B. Pope of Hurdle Mills; a son, William R. Blair Jr. of Oxford; a sister, Ruby Mae E. Hill of Rougemont; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mt. Creek cemetery Fund, c/o Mike Currin, 4072 Squire Lane, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of William and Linda Blair, 705 Sunset Ave., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.
