Allie L. Overton Sr.

HENDERSON -- Allie Lehman Overton, Sr., 88, formerly of Main Street, Kittrell, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Cora Dickerson Overton. He was the widower of Sallie Woodlief Overton and Olga Beasley Overton.
Mr. Overton was owner of the former Overton’s Grocery in Kittrell, which he operated for some forty-five years. He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held today, at 4:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Dr. Robert Culpepper. Burial will follow in the Woodlief Family cemetery in Kittrell.
Surviving are two daughters, Sally Ann O. Van Dyke and Mary Candis O. Moss, both of Kittrell; two stepdaughters, Jo Ann Hockett of Butner, N.C., and Charlotte Bowden of Angier, N.C.; four stepsons, Thomas Beasley of Cary, N.C., Clifton Beasley of Durham, and Albert Beasley and Danny Beasley, both of Butner, N.C.; four brothers, John H. Overton and Lewis E. Overton, both of Kittrell, Benjamin A. Overton of Raleigh, and Joseph A. Overton of Zebulon; six grandchildren, Linda M. Milton, Cheryl V. Chorba, Sandra V. Pernell, Crystal L. Overton, Pamela Jo Moss and Joseph Rives Moss Jr.; and seven grandchildren, Dana Pernell, Stephanie Pernell, Kristie Pernell, Jarrod Milton, Bobby V. Chorba, Kimberly Moss and Kaitlyn Moss.
The family will receive friends, from 3:00 to 4:15 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Alps and Sally Ann Van Dyke, 116 South William Street, Kittrell.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Allen Hockaday Jr., Bruce Hockaday, Mike Overton, Nelson Overton, Joseph Rives Moss Jr., Edward Woodlief, Thurston Woodlief, Elton Woodlief and Clifton Beasley.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Oak Ridge Baptist Church, c/o Gene Fisher, 3750 U.S. 1 Hwy., Kittrell, N.C. 27544.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Wilbert Bailey

OXFORD -- Wilbert Bailey, 80, of 3023 Tar River Road, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Duke Medical Center. He was the son of the late Johnny and Frances Vass Bailey.
He was a member of the Greenfield Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Annie R. Wortham, Annie M. Bailey, Barbara B. Cooper and Sherry E. Bailey, all of Creedmoor; three brothers, John W. Bailey, Charlie Bailey and Willie Bailey, all of Creedmoor; one sister, Etta Morton of Butner; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Jackson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.

Alfred J. Declue

CREEDMOOR -- Alfred J. Declue, 38, of 351 Runyan Road, Grover, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at his home. He was a Cumberland County native and the son of Odile Wolffer Declue and the late Stanley S. Declue.
He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and was medically retired as a heavy duty machine operator.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Don Brown. Burial will be in Concord Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Teresa Hall Declue of the home; two daughters, Renee Allen of New Mexico and Christina Marie Declue of Shelby; three sisters, Lilly Tudor of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mary Jane Declue of Butner and Helen D. Baynes of Rougemont; three brothers, Jack Declue and Eddie Declue, both of Butner, and Tony Declue of Kittrell.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor and other times at 2017 Gate #2 Road.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home Inc.

Louise M. Hawkins

HENDERSON -- Louise McKnight Hawkins, 59, of 404 Chavasse Ave., died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

John M. Johnson Jr.

HENDERSON -- John Milton Johnson, Jr., age 75, a resident of 306 Harriett Street, died Monday morning in a local nursing home.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late John Milton Johnson, Sr. and Susan Myrick Johnson. He was a retired 25-year veteran of the U. S. Air Force, having served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietname War, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
After his retirement from the military he worked for the city of Henderson as a foreman in the water department for 17 years.
He was a member of the Second Baptist Church and the Baracca Sunday School Class, a member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 AF&AM and a member of the Scottish Rite in Dallas, Texas.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Elmwood cemetery, with full military honors, by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and the Rev. Grady Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Leonard Johnson, of the home; one stepdaughter, Patricia B. Adcock, of Henderson; four sons, John Karl Johnson of Henderson, and James C. Johnson, Arthur W. Johnson, and Fred W. Johnson all of Raleigh; three sisters, Florence J. Reavis of Portsmouth, Va., Myrtle J. Bowling of Norfolk, Va., and Dorothy J. Pennypacker of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, James Gilbert Johnson of Ventura, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Second Baptist Church Building Fund, 603 Harriett Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

John H. Overton

KITTRELL -- John Henry Overton, 90, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home.
He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and was a retired farmer and carpenter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. W.C. Barham. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery in Franklinton.
Surviving are one foster daughter, Ida Barham of Wake Forest; three brothers, Abner Benjamin Overton of Raleigh, Lewis E. Overton of Kittrell and Joseph A. Overton of Zebulon; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Sandling Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Sandling Funeral Home of Franklinton.

John Wayne Short

HENDERSON -- John Wayne Short, age 60, a resident of 4840 Highway 39 South died Sunday in Maria Parham Hospital.
He was a native of Warren County and was the son of the late William Henry Short and the late Mary Hicks Short Norris. He was a retired painting contractor, and a former member of the Living Clay Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donnie Perkinson and the Rev. Ronnie Wilkerson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Forsythe Short; one daughter, Mary S. Pendergrass of Henderson; one son, the Rev. Tim W. Short of Warrenton; three sisters, Issabelle S. Woolard of Louisburg, and Mary S. Peoples and Darlene S. Creech both of Henderson; and three grandchildren, Amanda M. Short, Krystle D. Pendergrass and Brittany A. Pendergrass.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Hunt, Tommy Blanks, Allan B. Lassiter, Wayne Vick, Mickey Hughes and Edmond Walker.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Julius W. Stainback

HENDERSON -- Julius Wheeler “J.W.” Stainback, age 69, a resident of 744 Tollie Weldon Road, died Friday at his home.
He was a native of Franklin County and was the son of the late Jack Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Goodson Stainback. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a former member of the New Bethel Baptist Church and a member of the Midway Baptist Church in Plant City, Fla., and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by President Keith Abbott. Burial will follow in the Liberty-Vance United Church Of Christ cemetery.
He is survived by one son, Anthony Keith Stainback of Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter, Julie Charlene Kennedy of Mulberry, Fla.; three sisters, Louise Fuller of Louisburg, Ruth Tharrington of Raleigh, and Shirley Pace of Henderson; one brother, Alton O. Stainback of Henderson; and seven granddaughters.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at his home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Kenneth Fuller, Mark Pace, Mack Pace, Jeff Pace, Joe Kennedy, and Charles Catlett.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Kay J. Edwards

HENDERSON -- Kay Johnson Edwards, 63, formerly of Henderson, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in King. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late J.D. and Margie Brinkley Johnson.
She was a retired cost accountant with Hanes Hosiery Corp. in Winston-Salem.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah E. Rupp of Winston-Salem; a son, Robert L. Edwards Jr. of Badin; her stepmother, Ruby Tucker Johnson of Henderson; a sister, Frances J. Cooley of Charlottesville, Va.; and two brothers, Durwood “Dick” Johnson of Jupiter, Fla., and Tony Johnson of Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Ruby Johnson, 308 Parham Road, Henderson.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Flora O. Mann

OXFORD -- Flora Overton Mann, 84, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at E.E. Toney Rest Home in Oxford. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Cam and Willie Royster Overton. She was the widow of Buck Mann.
She worked for the Granville County tax office from 1936 to 1940 and was the register of deeds for Granville County from 1948 until she retired in 1992. She was also a clerk to the Granville County Commission for 30 years. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of Lora Averett Circle.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by Dr. Randy Pittmann. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving is one sister, Louise O. Ford of Oxford.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 4603 Old Route 75, Oxford, N.C. 27565, or to Poplar Creek Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1371 Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mrs. Dwight Ford, 403 E. Spring St., Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Michael Mitchell

CREEDMOOR -- Michael Mitchell, 33, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Lexington, Ky. He was a Granville County native.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

John H. Overton

Lucille P. Stainback

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Lucille Pulley Stainback, 73, of Midlothian, formerly of Henderson, died Sunday, March 4, 2001. She was the daughter of Delmus and Lucy Pulley and the widow of Clifton Price Stainback.
Surviving are her children, Linda Stainback, Darlene Stainback, Robin Clark and James Stainback; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dale Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted at the cemetery.
Arrangements are by K. L. Jordan Funeral Services of Richmond, Va.

David Webster

OXFORD -- David Webster, 85, of 406 Bullock St. died Monday, March 5, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donnie Jones. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are three daughters, Georgia Parker, Delphyne Thompson and Vivian Parker, all of Oxford; one sister, Velma Beck of Oxford; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors one hour before the funeral. The body will lie in state from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Haywood L.M. Hawkins

HENDERSON -- Haywood Louise McKnight Hawkins, 59, of 404 Chavasse Ave. died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Ella B. McKnight and the late Haywood McKnight.
She was educated in the Vance County Schools and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson for 48 years, serving on the usher board and the choir. For more than 30 years, she worked for Americal.
Surviving are her mother, Ella B. McKnight of Henderson; two daughters, Valarie D. Hawkins and Angela Hawkins Harris, both of Henderson; two sons, William Hawkins and Lawrence Hawkins, both of Henderson; one sister, Ella Lee Alston of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ratliff, presiding, and Elder Miran Henderson, assisted by the Rev. William Brodie and Minister McNeal. Interment will follow in the Blacknall cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at the residence.
Pallbearers will be Latrone Magbie, Shyheon Hargrove, Tommy Henderson, Robert Gee, Thomas Vass, Chris Gaye, Trinidy Faye and Ronnie Davis.
Floral bearers will be Patricia Harrington, Juanita Vass, Tracy Nelson, Sharon Hart, Barbara Cooper, Julia Henderson, Laura Davis, Sandra Hillard, Rosa Faines, Stacy Hargrove, Ernes-tine Hargrove, Josephine Har-grove, Nicole Hargrove, Dorothy Davis, Mary Hargrove, Danielle Hargrove, Barbara Parson and Lethia Cannady.
The body will be viewed today at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service of Henderson.

Glover H. Humphries

OXFORD -- Glover Huff Humphries, 93, of 500 Prospect Ave. died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native, the son of the late Horace and Annie Belle Arrington Humphries, and the widower of Annie Mae Weary Humphries.
He was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church and was a retired farmer and carpenter.
The Rev. Randy Carter and Dr. Randy Pittman will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford. Burial will be in Grassy Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Nellie Grey H. Bowen of Rougemont, Dorothy H. Burton of Henderson and Nettie D. Humphries of Oxford; three sons, J.D. Humphries, Russell Humphries and William “Boss” Humphries, all of Oxford; a sister, Mary H. Newcomb of Henderson; three half-sisters, Mary H. Humphries of Lexington, Laura McCauley of Chapel Hill and Julie Humphries of Japan; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Boss and Elizabeth Humphries, 4612 Watkins Road in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Michael Mitchell

CREEDMOOR -- Michael Mitchell, 33, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Lexington, Ky. He was a Granville County native.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rock Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Corbett. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Eula L. Webb of Creedmoor; his grandmother, Lura B. Mitchell of Creedmoor; five sisters, Barbara E. Dunston of Wendell, Diane Royster of Stovall, Gloria Mitch-ell of Creedmoor, Cynthia Clark of Durham and Kellie Taborn of Butner; and two brothers, William Mitchell of Lexington and Gary Mitchell of Creedmoor.
The family will receive friends at 103 Allen St. The body will lie in state from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.
