Wilbur B. Clark
OXFORD -- Wilbur Bernard Clark, 75, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisc. He was a Granville County native.
He was a graduate of the Joe Toler High School and a veteran of the United States Army.
Surviving are one sister, Beulah C. Overby of Oxford; and one brother, MacBuford Clark of Oxford.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at Betts & Son Chapel by the Rev. Robert E. Page. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the new Johnathan Creek Church cemetery.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, 317 East McClanahan St.

Mary E. Hobgood
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Mary Etta Hobgood, 68, of 131 Columbia St., Apt. B-2, Brooklyn, N.Y., died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn.
She was a Granville County native and attended the Granville County Schools.
Surviving are one brother, James R. Hobgood of Oxford; and one sister, Ann Wrenn of Lynchburg, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Holy Church by the Rev. Patrick Jackson. Burial will be announced later.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the funeral at the church and other times at the home of her brother, 204 Easy St.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.

Marie P. Jones
WARRENTON -- Marie P. Jones, 104, of Warrenton, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Warren Hills Nursing Facilities in Warrenton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Eddie Lawrence will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Eliza Kearney of Warrenton, Willie Marie Alston and Mildred Tucker, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; one son, John W. Jones of Warrenton; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary F. Parrish
HENDERSON -- Mary Louise Funderburk Parrish, 54, of 100 Kelly Road, Henderson, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Pensacola, Fla., and the daughter of Margaret Blackmon Funderburk of Woodbridge, Va., and the late Bernard Funderburk.
She was a homemaker and a member of The Lord’s Victorious Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Eastside Baptist Church by the Rev. Aubrey Florence. Burial will follow in Liberty Vance United Church of Christ cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, John Henry “J.H.” Parrish; two sons, Bernard Stanley Parrish of New Bern, and John Henry Parrish Jr. of Henderson; four brothers, Bill Funderburk and Bob Funderburk, both of Woodbridge, Va., Roger Funderburk of Germany and Henry Funderburk of Texas; and two grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Wendy Harris, 1520 Dabney Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Chuck Parrish, Mark Parrish, Mike Parrish, Jerry Parrish Jr., David Burch, Jim Cantrell, Todd Parrish, and Greg Pulliam.

Mary H. Pulley
KITTRELL -- Mary Lee Hight Pulley, age 97, a former resident of 120 Smith Street, died Sunday evening in a local nursing home.
She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Hattie Sims Hight. She was a homemaker and was the widow of Melvin Burley Pulley. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tony Peed. Burial will follow in the Oakridge Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Josephine P. Moss of Kittrell and Marie P. Jones of Wilson; one son, Benjamin Linwood Pulley of Kittrell; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Louis Elmo Pulley.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Linwood and Nell Pulley at 120 Smith Street, Kittrell.
Serving as active pall bearers will be her grandsons, Benny Pulley, Danny Pulley,Gary Pulley, Grady Moss, Mike Jones, and Mack Jones.

HENDERSON -- John Baldwin Purcell, 71, of 1347 Hight St., died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.

DURHAM -- Catherine Allen Thorpe, 59, of 2146 Charles St., Apt. 49, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at home. She was a native of Creedmoor and the daughter of the late Lonnie G. and Annie Mae Bullock Allen.
She worked as a health technician at the Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Joy Baptist Church, 717 Hardee St., by the Rev. James Daniel. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rock Spring Baptist Church cemetery.
Family visitation wil be held one hour prior to the service.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.
Surviving are her daughter, Katrina Harris; sons, Robert Thorpe, Dexter Thorpe, Desmond Thorpe and Travis Thorpe; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Mary A. Nicholson; stepmother, Minnie Allen; stepbrothers, Phillip Allen, Lonnie Allen, Tydal Allen and Bobby Allen.

DURHAM -- Arnold McClain Sr., 73, of 1808 Bradford Circle died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Wake County native.
He was a retired director of maintenance with Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Cornelius Battle. Burial will be in Glennview Memorial cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra M. Benjamin of Willingboro, N.J.; two sons, Arnold McClain Jr. of Cleveland and Jerry L. McClain of Durham; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

CREEDMOOR -- Chester Arthur Street, 81, of 2506 Brogden Road died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his residence.
He was a former employee of Murdoch Center and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry McElroy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Hattie Hayes Street; five daughters, Fayedene Mance of Toccoa, Ga., Laverne Finley of Stem, Sheron “Denice” Robinson of Butner, Linda S. Long of Creedmoor and Brenda Street of the home; two sons, Chester L. Street of Toccoa and Rodney L. Street of Oxford; three sisters, Margaret Moore of Newark, N.J., and Frelia Fields and Esther Lawson, both of Oxford; one brother, Theodore “Buck” Street of Roxboro; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Lottie S. Weldon
HENDERSON -- Lottie Smith Weldon, 94, of 8678 N.C. 39 Hwy. S., Henderson, N.C., in the Epsom Community, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late James Blair and Dora Coley Smith. She was the widow of James Dewey Weldon.
Mrs. Weldon was a homemaker. She was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ and the Henderson Civitan Club.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak. Burial will follow in Liberty Vance United Church of Christ cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Ann W. Mayo of Mount Olive, N.C., and Jean W. Ayscue of Henderson; a sister, Ethel S. Harutun of Palm Springs, California; a brother, Edward B. Smith of Waco, Texas; nine grandchildren, Steve Southerland of Bracey, Va., Theresa S. Daves of Ellenwood, Ga., James H. Mayo Jr. of Mount Olive, N.C., Ann M. Gregory of Goldsboro, N.C., Nancy M. West of Dudley, N.C., Joyce M. Beavers of Seven Springs, N.C., Garland R. Ayscue Jr. of Henderson, Jean A. Sturgill of Mebane, N.C., and James R. Ayscue of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, William D. Mayo.

Anne G. Ayscue
HENDERSON -- Anne Gordon Ayscue, 71, of 1298 Tollie Weldon Road, Henderson, in the Epsom Community, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at her home.
A native of Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Warner and Nannie Collins Gordon. She was the widow of Thurston Norfleet Ayscue.
Mrs. Ayscue was a homemaker. She taught ceramics at Vance Granville Community College, and most recently at the former Anne’s Ceramics. After retirement, she served as a teacher’s aide with the Franklin-Vance-Warren Head Start program. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will he held Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by Pastor Jim Curtis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Stan L. Ayscue of Henderson and Robin N. Ayscue and wife Tammy of Oxford; two sisters, Margaret G. Woodlief and Elizabeth W. Ayscue, both of Henderson; and one grandchild, Addison Leanna Ayscue.
The family will receive friends today, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Andy Oakley, Randy Kearney, Wayne Ayscue, Gary Ayscue, Pete Overton, Mike Hunike, Bill Faircloth and Scott Ayscue.

Menville D. Davis

She was the widow of Solomon Davis.
She was a member of Manson Baptist Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Davis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five sons, James Davis of Richmond, Va., Joe L. Davis and William Davis of Coram, N.Y., Solomon Davis of Norlina and Herman Davis of Henderson; five daughters, Dorthy Daley of Bellport, N.Y., Betty Harris of Norfolk, Va., Martha Williams of Manson, Menville Henderson of Norlina and Geneva Williams of the home; one brother, Willie Davis of Warrenton; four sisters, Beatrice Bell of Norfolk, Mary Baskett and French Schreven of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ruth Henderson of Edenton; 35 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at 1215 Gunclub Road, Henderson.
Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons. Floral bearers will be granddaughters and friends.

Robert H. Harris
HENDERSON -- Robert Henry Harris, age 63, a resident of 2735 Horseshoe Bend Road, died Wednesday. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Jessie W. and Lillie Wilkins Harris. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired Insurance Salesman from Durham Life Insurance Company and Western-Southern Life Insurance Co. He was a Member of the Amran Temple, Henderson York Rite Bodies, and the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 AF & AM, of which he was a past Master of Lodge.
He was a member of Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. John Yount and the Rev. Tony Futtrell. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites.
He is survived by four sisters, Annie Belle H. Howard of Chesapeake, Virginia, Betha H. Crews, Linville H. Keeton and Lucy Mae Harris, all of Henderson; three brothers, Calvin Harris and J. B. Harris, both of Oxford, Joseph Harris and Hardie Harris, both of Henderson; and his beloved friend Lillie Boone of Henderson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Helen Stanton, and five brothers, John Edward Harris, Perry Thomas Harris, Bennie L. Harris, George F. Harris and William L. Harris.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Linville and C.T. Keeton at 530 Pine Ridge Road.

Robert ‘R.G.’ Lassiter
NORLINA -- Robert “R.G.” Lassiter, 64, of the Oine community, Norlina, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the Warren Hills Nursing Facility in Warrenton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church in the Oine community by the Rev. Rosa Paschall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Peggy Grooms of Warrenton; one son, Daniel Lassiter of East Orange, N.J.; five grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Branch of Wise; and two brothers, Charles Edwards and William Lassiter, both of Norlina.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to the church one hour before the services.
