HENDERSON -- Bertha Strum Oldham, age 80, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Howard and Gloria Jean Adcock at 961 Carey Chapel Road.
Funeral arrangements will be announced Saturday by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Lottie S. Weldon

HENDERSON -- Lottie Smith Weldon, 94, of 8678 N.C. 39 Hwy. S., Henderson, N.C., in the Epsom Community, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late James Blair and Dora Coley Smith. She was the widow of James Dewey Weldon.
Mrs. Weldon was a homemaker. She was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ and the Henderson Civitan Club.
Funeral services will be held today, at 11 a.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak. Burial will follow in Liberty Vance United Church of Christ cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Ann W. Mayo of Mount Olive, N.C., and Jean W. Ayscue of Henderson; a sister, Ethel S. Harutun of Palm Springs, California; a brother, Edward B. Smith of Waco, Texas; nine grandchildren, Steve Southerland of Bracey, Va., Theresa S. Daves of Ellenwood, Ga., James H. Mayo Jr. of Mount Olive, N.C., Ann M. Gregory of Goldsboro, N.C., Nancy M. West of Dudley, N.C., Joyce M. Beavers of Seven Springs, N.C., Garland R. Ayscue Jr. of Henderson, Jean A. Sturgill of Mebane, N.C., and James R. Ayscue of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, William D. Mayo.
The family received friends Thursday evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Jean Ayscue, 42 Wintergreen Road, Henderson.
Members of the Henderson Civitan Club will serve as active pallbearers.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, cemetery Fund, 7818 N.C. Hwy. 39 S., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Jackie R. Williams

DURHAM -- Jackie R. Williams, 44, of 870 Estes St. died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville native.
Surviving is one brother, Nathaniel Williams of Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Betts & Son Chapel by the Rev. Ralph Mangum. Burial will follow in the Williams-Turner family cemetery in Rougemont.
The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Frances B. Crews

CREEDMOOR -- Frances Bullock Crews, 87, of 3000 Highway 15 in the Hester community died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Hal and Kate Fleming Bullock. She was the widow of David Reid Crews.
She was a member of Bullock United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Grace Deal. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, June C. Cross of Creedmoor and Carolyn C. Stovall of Stovall; a son, Richard Crews of Creedmoor; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Bullock United Methodist Church, c/o June Cross, 701 Forrest Lane, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Ella E. Hargrove

HENDERSON -- Ella Evans Hargrove, 71, of 917 Water St. died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Rev. Clarence Evans and Nancy Bullock Evans. She was the widow of Waverly Branch Hargrove.
She worked many years at Harriet & Henderson Yarns before retirement.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Morning Star Holy Church by the Rev. Shirley Piercy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Barbara Hargrove, Burnetta Cheatham of the home, Beverly Peace and Mary Ann Hargrove of Henderson; three sons, Frederick Hargrove, Waverly Hargrove Jr., both of the home, and Elvis Lewis Hargrove of Jersey City, N.J.; two sisters, Louvenia Wimbush and Sadie Milligan, both of Henderson; three brothers, James Evans of Roselle, N.J., Clarence Evans Jr. of Linden, N.J., and Earl Hawkins of Townsville; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

David Lee Hope

HENDERSON -- David Lee Hope, 72, of 615 Parham Road, Henderson, died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A Vance County native, he was the son of the late Tommy and Annie Bell Ivey Hope.
Mr. Hope was the retired owner and operator of the former Hope’s Steakhouse and Restaurant, and Hope’s Grill. After retirement, he delivered papers for The Daily Dispatch. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and the Henderson Masonic Lodge #229 A.F. & A.M.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Yount and the Rev. Michael Rocheleau. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Mavis Hayes Hope; two daughters, Tracy H. Atkinson and Tommie Leigh H. Ayscue, both of Henderson; a sister, Maria H . Wynne of Henderson; four grandchildren, B.J. Ayscue, Jessica Ayscue, Will Atkinson and Lauren Atkinson; and his beloved dog, Scooter.
The family will receive friends this evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be J.C. Harton, Sam Atkinson, Donnie Hogge, Charles Fletcher, Harry Collins, Ted Bowen, Walter Ed Hight, Donnie King and Willie Journigan.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 3000 Industrial Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Graham B. Clark

OXFORD -- Graham B. Clark, 58, of Newark, Del., died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home. He was the son of Annie Mae Currin Clark of Oxford and the late Hammie B. Clark.
He was a supervisor for the Wells Fargo Guard Service. He was a U.S. Army veteran who had been stationed in England, a retired U.S. deputy marshal, and an avid and active supporter of the Glasgow High School football team.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oxford Baptist Church in Oxford by the Rev. J. Steven Bolton. Interment will be at Nelson Baptist Church cemetery in Nelson, Va.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 30 years, Angela T. Clark, and two sons, Vincent M. Clark and Francis A. Clark, both of Newark.
Friends may call Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place in Newark, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. 27565 or to Nelson Baptist Church, 1837 Nelson Church Road, Nelson, Va. 24580.

Lafayette Miles Sr.

HENDERSON -- Lafayette Miles Sr., 66, of 402 Carolina Ave. died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Bertha S. Oldham

HENDERSON -- Bertha Strum Oldham, 80, died Thursday, March 24, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Fredrick Dodson and Katherine Ramsey Strum. She was a member of the Gospel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Greene Jr. and the Rev. Sidney Twisdale. Burial will follow in the Gillburg United Methodist Church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Warren Oldham; three daughters, Gloria Jean O. Adcock of Henderson, Joyce O. Fleming of Knightdale and Kathy O. Matthews of Raleigh; four sisters, Norma S. Baker, Thelma S. Hedgepeth, Myrtle S. Hicks and Rose S. Paschall, all of Henderson; two brothers, Raymond Strum and Coen Strum, both of Henderson; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Daniel Ayscue, David Ayscue, Jeff Baird, Glenn Strum, Starr Faulkner and Woody Kerley.
The family received friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they have been at the home of Howard and Gloria Jean Adcock, 961 Carey Chapel Road.

Robert G. Poythress

BUFFALO JUNCTION, Va. -- Robert Glenn Poythress, 93, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond. He was a Franklin County native and the widower of Edna Royster Poythress.
He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. He worked at Burlington Industries and was a tobacco farmer before retirement.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Malvin Tuck. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his daughter, Carolyn P. Pittard of Oxford; a son, James Robert Poythress of Port Republic; three sisters, Maxine Hamm, Mavis Neal and Louise Adcock; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.
Arrangements are by Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home of Clarksville.

Robin R. Rowland

OXFORD -- Robin Reneé Rowland, 41, of 557 Robert Roland Road, Oxford, died Saturday, March 24, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by J.M. White Funeral Home.

Daphine L. Short

HENDERSON -- Daphine Lassiter Short, 68, a resident of 1847 Clearview Drive, died Saturday morning, March 24, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Robert and Erma King Lassiter.
She was a homemaker and widow of Benjamin “Bennie” Short. She was a member of the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, where funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in the Rock Spring Baptist Church cemetery in Townsville.
She is survived by her mother, Mozella Lassiter of Henderson; three sisters, Ann L. Grissom of Kittrell, Bessie Conner of Sarasota, Fla., and Shirley Pendley of Raleigh; one stepsister, Gail A. West of Kittrell; three brothers, William L. Lassiter of Roanoke, Va., Kenneth Lassiter of High Point and William D. Lassiter of Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Pamela Wiggins at 502 Hickory St.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Bruce Harp, Ronnie Lassiter, Joe Johnson, Denny Ray Peoples, Edmond Walker, Grover Stegall, John Vance Short and Odell Pendley.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Martha M. Daniel

LITTLETON -- Martha Moore Daniel, 90, of 988 Hwy. No. 4, Littleton, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Facility.
Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Warren Hills Nursing Facilities by the Rev. Robert L. Yates.

HENDERSON -- Beulah Chrisp Fitts, 86, a native of Henderson, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Wake Medical Center.

Martha L.J. Hargrove

HENDERSON -- Martha Lee Jefferson Hargrove, 70, of 824 N. Pinkston St., died Monday, March 26, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.

Elizabeth Hudgins

MACON -- Elizabeth Hudgins, 74, of the Embro community, Macon, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Lafayette Miles Sr.

HENDERSON -- Lafayette Miles Sr., 66, of 402 Carolina Ave., died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Peter and Emma Brandon Miles.
He was educated in the Vance County School System. He was a retired load operator for W.T. Wooten Construction Company, where he worked for over thirty years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Chapel by Pastor John Miles Jr. Burial will be in Ilong Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Cora Glover Miles; six daughters, Shirley Shaw of Greensboro, Delois Blacknell of Kittrell, Barbara Miles of Norlina, Barbara Wilkerson of Oxford, Karen Waverly and Shelia Miles, both of Henderson; four sons, Lafayette Miles Jr. of Oxford, Larry Miles of Durham, Norman Miles and Vernon Miles, both of Henderson; three sisters, Myrtle Terry, Roann Venable and Louise Hargrove, all of Henderson; one foster son, Milton Macon of Henderson; two brothers, E.C. Brandon of Oxford and Thurston Miles of Henderson; 26 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at the residence. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Benjamin H. Pridgen

HENDERSON -- Benjamin Hughes “Butch” Pridgen, 54, of 880 Coble Boulevard, Henderson, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 in Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Murray and Jessie Hughes Pridgen.
Mr. Pridgen was retired after thirty years with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of City Road United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous church committees.
Funeral services will be held today, at 11 a.m., at City Road United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Danielle Kirkland. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, are his wife, Marilyn Ayscue Pridgen; a brother, Mike Pridgen, and wife, Cher, of Wilmington, N.C.; a niece, Drew Pridgen, of Wilmington, N.C.; a nephew, Will Pridgen, of Wilmington, N.C.; two step-sons, Allan Daniel, and wife, Cindy, of Oxford; and Brian Daniel, and wife, Renee, of Henderson; and a step-grandson, Whitt Daniel, of Henderson.
The family received friends Monday evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home of Paul Nowell, 105 Ranes Drive, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ray Clopton, Howard Hughes, Herbert Forsythe, Henry Bryan, Max Rogers, George Grissom, and Jimmy Adams.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to City Road United Methodist Church, c/o Alene Brummitt, P.O. Box 1212, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
