James H. Jeffress
PALMER SPRINGS -- James Hillery “Jimmie” Jeffress Sr., 67, of 835 Rough Road, Boydton, Va., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the son of Richard Fleming Jeffress and Elise Vaughan Jeffress.
He was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church and was owner of Jeffress Insurance Co. in South Hill, Va., for many years.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview cemetery in Warrenton by the Rev. Bill Tanner.
Surviving are his wife, Helen H. Jeffress; mother, Elise V. Jeffress of Roanoke, Va.; son, James H. “Jeff” Jeffress Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister, Mary “Mollie” Snedegar of Roanoke, Va.; six stepchildren, Warren Brenner of Clearwater, Fla., Lucy Hellman of Charleston, S.C., Holly Reiling of Germany, Betsy Dunphy of Herndon, Va., Marc Brenner of Rocky Mount and Sandy Barfield of Littleton; and eight grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Memorial Hospice, P.O. Box 90, South Hill, Va. 23970.
The family will receive friends at the residence in Boydton immediately after the funeral service.

Elnora D. Kearney
KITTRELL -- Elnora Davis Kearney, 57, of 534 Buffalo Creek Lane died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at her residence. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of John Davis and the late Maria Watson Davis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jordan Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. James Barham. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Roosevelt Kearney; five children, Roosevelt Kearney Jr., Rodney Kearney and Doris Kearney of Kittrell, Victor Kearney of Henderson and Nora Kearney Dunston of Kittrell; three brothers, John Davis Jr., Walter Davis and Bobby Davis, all of Maryland; seven sisters, Clementine Tucker, Maria Cheek, Genevia Skipwith, Christine Powell and Lula Powell, all of Warrenton, Tina Wyche of Middleburg and Francis Clinton of Baltimore; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

Blanche N. Neathery
HENDERSON -- Blanche N. Neathery, 89, a resident of 4376 Glebe Road, died Thursday morning, April 5, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a native of Vance County, was the daughter of the late Robert and Ida Harris Nethery, and was the widow of Brodie Lee Neathery.
She was a former employee of the old Leggetts Department Store. She was a lifelong member of Island Creek Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and Women Missionary Union leader.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Island Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnson Gupton. Burial will follow in the Island Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by four daughters, Frances N. Overby, Barbara N. Davis and Yvonne N. Phelps, all of Henderson, and Donnie N. Lamberth of Midlothian, Va.; two sons, Farrell Neathery of Clarksville, Va., and Douglas Neathery of Henderson; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons, Hal Davis, Heath Davis, Michael Neathery, Chad Watkins, Dale Pernell, Brent Pernell and Jonathan Pernell.

HENDERSON -- Funeral services for Doris Ann Peyton, 66, who died Saturday, March 31, 2001, will be held at noon Saturday at Richardson Funeral Home Chapel in Louisburg. Burial will follow in the Mary H. Jones cemetery.

Sylvia Q. Starrett
HENDERSON -- Sylvia Quenzel Starrett, 60, a resident of 196 Hunter’s Ridge, died Wednesday night, April 4, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a native of Camden, N.J., and was the daughter of the late Charles Robert and Marie Pizzutello Quenzel.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Rob Keffer.
She is survived by her husband, Weldon Starrett, and one brother, Robert Quenzel of Matawan, N.J.

BUTNER -- Doris J. Bullock, 54, of 1585-E Falling Brook Drive, Granville Oaks Apartments, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at her residence.

HENDERSON -- Jeremy Jocquinn-Boydell Burton, 19, of 1300 Pinkston St. died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Vance County. He was a Vance County native.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Oak Level United Church of Christ by the Rev. Leon White. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Mo’Naisha Williams-Burton of Henderson; his parents, Herbert and Linda Hargrove Burton of the home; two brothers, Herbert Burton and Taheed Davis, both of Henderson; one sister, Antoinette Allen of Henderson; his maternal grandfather, Boyd Hargrove of Manson; and his paternal grandmother, Dora Burton of Manson.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.

OXFORD -- Thela Wilkerson Green, 82, of 6535 Ben Thorpe Road died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
She was a member of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Holy Temple COIG by pastor James Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a stepmother, Mable Tuck Allen of Oxford; three daughters, Gloria Lyon, Anna Younger and Hanna Mitchell, all of Oxford; two sons, Allen Green of Oxford and Larry Green of Roxboro; four sisters, Gertrude Wrenn and Lunie Taborn, both of Oxford, and Juanita Walcox and Betty Carter, both of Virginia; three brothers, John Allen of Oxford and Nathan Allen and Robert Allen, both of Rocky Mount; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home.

CREEDMOOR -- Doris J. Bullock, 54, of 1585E, Falling Brook Drive, Granville Apartments, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at her residence.
The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Funeral services will be held in Charlottesville, Va.

Tristan B. Campbell
HENDERSON -- Tristan Blake Campbell, 20, of Henderson, N.C., died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he is the son of Robert Blake Campbell and Janice Marie Reece Campbell, of 170 Hunter’s Ridge, Henderson.
Tristan was a student at Vance Granville Community College. He was a member of Freedom Life Church of God.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at 2 p.m., at Freedom Life Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Megan Campbell, of the home; his paternal grandmother, June Blake Campbell, of Cincinnati, Ohio; four aunts, Francine Falls, Tara Koger, Jan Carmicino, and Shawn Weist, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; and six uncles, Ray Reece, and Greg Reece, both of Washington, N.C., Jim Reece, of Phoenix, Arizona, Rick Reece, of Seattle, Washington, Terry Reece, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and John Reece, of Chicago, Illinois.
The family will receive friends Monday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Nicholas Stainback, Robby Drinnen, Kevin Donathan, Chad Yeager, Ryan Yeager, John Reece, Andy Johns, and Phillip Meador. The Young Adult and Parents Brain Tumor Support Group will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Eric Goodyear Flannagan Jr.
HENDERSON -- Eric Goodyear Flannagan, Jr. age 84, a resident of 320 Granite St., died Saturday at his home.
He was a native of Covington, Va., and was the son of the late Eric Goodyear and Beryl Morris Flannagan, Sr. He was a partner in the Architectural Firm of Eric G. Flannagan & Sons.
He attended the University of North Carolina, was a graduate of North Carolina State University School of Architecture and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in the fine arts. He practiced architecture the past 40 years and there are examples of his work throughout the state of North Carolina.
He was a former member of the Henderson Rotary Club, for 50 years. Mr. Flannagan was a lifelong member of the Church of the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, where he was a former vestryman and longtime member of the choir.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Church of the Holy Innocents by the Rev. Daniel Barker. Entombment will be in the Memorial Garden at the church.
He is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Rose Cronin Flannagan; two daughters, Kathleen F. Brooks and husband Stephen of High Point, N.C., and Christine F. Wade of Morehead City, N.C.; one sister, Effie F. Baskervill of Kilmarnock, Va.; one brother, Stephen G. Flannagan of Henderson, N.C.; two grandchildren Eric P. Brooks and wife Karman, and Stephanie M. Brooks; and one great-grandchild, McKenna Brooks all of High Point, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the home.

BUTNER -- Pauline Freeman Morris, 92, of 311-15th St., died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Evan and Ethel Currin Freeman. She was the widow of Charlie A. Morris.
She was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Butner and was retired from Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. John Yount. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are daughter, Julia M. Smith of Butner; a son, Charlie A. Morris Jr. of Goldsboro; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.

WARREN COUNTY -- George W. Vaughan, 70, formerly of Warren County, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Whites Grove Christian Church in Norlina. The Rev. John Pugh, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Louise V. Durham of Norlina; and three brothers, John L. Sr. of Richmond, Va., Theodore Jr. of Norlina and Robert E. Vaughan.

Harold L. Cushenberry
HENDERSON -- Harold L. Cushenberry, 76, of 1304 W. Andrews Ave., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native Grindstone, Pa.
He was a retired principal with the Vance County school system and a columnist with the Henderson Daily Dispatch. He was a graduate of Fayetteville State Teachers College and the University of Pittsburgh. He did further study at the University of West Virginia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Mitchell. Burial will be in Sunset Garden.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy M. Cushenberry; one son, Judge Harold L. Cushenberry Jr. of Washington, D.C.; one brother, James Cushenberry of Grindstone, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.

Everett L. Gupton
HENDERSON -- Everett Lee Gupton, 85, of 333 Tower Road, Henderson, in the Cokesbury Community, died Monday, April 9, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late Alfred Thomas and Prudence Edwards Gupton.
Mr. Gupton was a farmer and retired manager of FCX in Warrenton. He was a member of Brown’s Baptist Church and the Aycock Ruritan Club. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Funeral services will be held Wednesdsay, at 11 a.m., at Brown’s Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Greene, Jr. and the Rev. Buddy Johnson. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Beatrice Heading Gupton; a daughter, Janice G. Matthews, and husband, Jerry, of Henderson; a son, Curtis Lee Gupton, Sr., and wife, Peggy, of Henderson; a sister, Jessie Mae Coghill, of Henderson; four grandchildren, Curtis Lee Gupton, Jr., and wife, Sonia, Jerry Matthews, Jr., and Leslie P. Matthews, all of Henderson, and Lori M. Garrett, and husband, Jay, of Oxford; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla Morgan Garrett, and Parker Alyse Garrett. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Bett G. Fisher, Margaret G. Edmonds, Eula G. Thompson, and Eleanor G. Johnson; and three brothers, Robert Gupton, Brodie Gupton, and Emmett Gupton.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Curtis and Peggy Gupton, 295 Tower Road, Henderson, in the Cokesbury Community.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Dwayne Gordon, Larry Short, Archie Coghill, Bryant Gill, Marvin Overby, Jr., Ned Lloyd, Donald Gill, Jerry Matthews, Jr., Calvin Seaman, and Pete Vaughan.

BRACEY, VA. -- Ellen S. Johnson, 98, of Bracey, Va., died Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Southhill, Va.

Miriam J.H. Jurich
MACON -- Miriam Jane Hunt Jurich, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her residence in Macon. She was the daughter of the late Walter H. Hunt Sr. and Cathryne Gardner Hunt. She was the widow of Mate S. Jurich.
She was a member of Macon United Methodist Church and was retired from the A.J. Bayless Grocery Chain where she worked as a clerk.
Surviving are one brother, Walter Hunt of Hampton, Va., and one sister, Frances Snow Fisher of St. Clair Shore, Mich.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Rev. Rob Evans. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Macon.
Family and friends will be meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
