WARRENTON -- Maggie Miliam, 83, of the Churchhill community, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Helen S. Pitchford

WARRENTON -- Helen Smiley Pitchford, 75, of Monroe, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Dothan, Ala. She was the daughter of the late John Little Smiley and Ethel Joyner Smiley. She was the widow of Donald William Pitchford.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and a former employee of Rose’s.
Surviving is one son, Jack Oliver Frye of Butner.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Fairview cemetery by the Rev. Steve Edwards.
Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Eugene Walker

MACON -- Eugene Walker, 81, of the Boyd Rest Home in Macon, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Doris R. Winslow

OXFORD -- Memorial services for Doris Reed Winslow, who died Sunday, April 1, 2001, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Epworth United Methodist Church in Winfall by the Rev. Jim Krepps. Burial will be in Cedar Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 98, Winfall, N.C. 27985.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

David A. Hobbs

ROXBORO -- David Arnold Hobbs, 81, of 306 Youngs Chapel Church Road died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at his home after an extended illness. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Dave Hobbs and Etta Hobbs Tart. He was the widower of Bessie Harris Hobbs.
He was a retired security guard for Collins & Aikman and was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Theresa Baptist Church by the Revs. Herbert Brown and David Woodhouse. Interment will be in Person Memorial cemetery.
Surviving are five daughters, Shelia H. Young, Rita H. Harris, Deborah H. Chambers and Betsy H. Hamlett, all of Roxboro, and Carol H. Vicks of South Boston, Va.; three sisters, Virginia T. Thompson, Mary Ann T. Harris and Patsy T. Fort, all of Henderson; 13 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Jason Harris, Scottie Harris, Joey Harris, Chris Brooks, Calvin Powell and Gary Baird.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Strickland Funeral Home and other times at the home on Youngs Chapel Church Road.
Flowers are acceptable, or memorials may be made to Home Health and Hospice of Person County, 325 S. Morgan St., Roxboro, N.C. 27573, or Cure Autism Now, 5455 Wilshire Blvd., No. 715, Los Angeles, Calif. 90036.
Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home, 1314 N. Main St., Roxboro.

James T. Ligon Jr.

STOVALL -- James T. “Jimmy” Ligon Jr., 52, a former resident of Stovall, died in Ocala, Fla. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late James T. Ligon Sr. and Viola Mae Campbell Ligon.
He was an Army veteran of the Vietname War.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stovall Memorial cemetery by the Rev. John Yount.
There are no immediate survivors.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Lucy M. Parrish

HENDERSON -- Lucy Morris Parrish, 89, a resident of 729 South Carolina Ave., died Monday, April 9, 2001, in the Senior Citizens Home. She was a native of Franklin County and was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Sarah Gupton Morris. She was the widow of George W. Parrish.
She was a homemaker and a member of the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a member of the Women’s Bible Class and the Ladies Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Jeannette T. Brame and Betty T. Short, both of Henderson; two sons, Robert M. Tart and James J. Tart, both of Henderson; one brother, James Franklin Morris of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Donald Ray Tart, Milton W. Tart, Ronnie Lassiter, Richard Tharrington, Jimmy Vick, Patrick Brame and Christopher Brame.
The family will receive friends today before the service from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Short, 558 Wayview Road, Henderson.

Linville T. Royster

OXFORD -- Linville T. Royster, 82, formerly of Bullock, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late George W. and Lottie Hicks Royster.
She was a member of Bullock Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lemar Wheeler. Burial will follow in the Royster cemetery in Bullock.
Surviving are her brother, John Morgan Royster of Oxford, and her sister, Lutie Mae R. Oakley of Richmond, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Royster cemetery Fund, c/o Martin Lee, P.O. Box 86, Bullock, N.C. 27507.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of John Morgan Royster, 109 Saddletree Road.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Florence L. Dawson

MATTHEWS -- Florence Latham Dawson, age 75, died April 9, 2001, at Plantation Estates Retirement Center.
Known as “Poncie,” she was the daughter of the late Council Claudius and Lucile Reams Dawson of Cramer-ton, N.C. She is a graduate of National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh, N.C., and Randolph Macon College in Lynchburg, Va. She taught primary grade school in Southern Pines, then later taught kindergarten and second grade at Charlotte Country Day School. She was married and lived in Statesville, N.C., before moving to Plantation Estates in 1993.
She is survived by a brother, Claudius Sidney Dawson of Gastonia; two sisters, Sarah Dawson Davis of Henderson and Suzanne Dawson Tanner of Rutherfordton. She also is survived by a stepdaughter, Sally Allison Johnson of Charlotte, and two stepgranddaughters, Katie and Frances. In addition, she is survived by six nieces and four nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Gastonia, with the Rev. Norman Hull-Ryde officiating at the service.
The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall immediately after the service.

Paul M. Hannon

August 17, 1971 - April 6, 2001

RALEIGH -- Paul McKenzie Hannon, 29, of 2048 Queen Charlotte Place, Raleigh, formerly of Wendell, died Friday night, April 6, 2001, in an auto accident.
He is survived by his parents, Sam and Victoria Hannon of Wendell; sisters, Elle Hannon of Raleigh and Sarah Hannon of Wendell; maternal grandmother, Thelma Tedder of Pittsboro.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lacy B. and Catherine O. Hannon, and maternal grandfather, Frank G. Tedder.
A private burial will be held on Sunday.
Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home, Wendell.

Thomas Hargrove Sr.

HENDERSON -- Thomas Hargrove Sr., 87, of 514 E. Rock Spring St. died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Maggie Milam

WARRENTON -- Maggie Milam, 83, of the Church Hill community died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. Powers, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Milam family cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are two sisters, Mammie Milam and Elizabeth Milam, both of Macon, and two brothers, Matthew Milam of Warrenton and Hardy Milam of Littleton.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Lucille Russell

WARREN COUNTY -- Lucille Russell, 90, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Carver Living Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Russell Union R.Z.U.A. Church in Warren County by Bishop James Terry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Burthey Funeral Chapel. All other times, the family will be at the home of a niece, Lena Hickson, 3045 Wedgedale Ave.

Sarah E. Alston

WARRENTON -- Sarah Ellis Alston, 78, of Warrenton died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Solid Rock Faith Ministries in Warrenton by Pastor Moore H. Bynum. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Baptist Church cemetery in Warrenton.
Surviving are two sisters, Grace Munsel and Hattie Beatty, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Eliza M. Boyd

HENDERSON -- Eliza Myrtle Boyd, 76, of 1029 S. Chestnut St. died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Ira Willingham and Rose Adams.
She was a retired high school teacher, having worked in the Vance County school system for years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the International Teachers Society. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Charles Cook.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at the home after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Minnie D. Ellington

OXFORD -- Minnie Dickerson Ellington, 92, of 500 Prospect Ave. died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late William Otis and Lissie Kearney Dickerson. She was the widow of Maj. Alton Ellington.
She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and retired from Granville Manufacturing Co.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by Dr. Jim Whitehead. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Garland Lee Ellington of Oxford; five sisters, Lizzie Hicks, Pearl Hoyle, Evelyn Evans and Beulah Dalton, all of Oxford, and Rena Caulder of Raleigh; two brothers, Bryant Dickerson of Raleigh and Lindsey Dickerson of Durham; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at 4311 Belltown Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Carl L. Evans Jr.

HENDERSON -- Carl Lewis Evans Jr., 73, of 1415 Peace Street, Henderson, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home.
Born January 12, 1928, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Carl Lewis Evans Sr. and Martha Talley Evans Cates. He was the stepson of the late Willis E. Cates.
Mr. Evans was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and served seven years as a criminal investigator in the United States, Mexico and Japan. He worked for more than thirty years in the railroad industry, first with Union Pacific Railroad in Washington, D.C., and then with Norfolk Southern Railway in Raleigh, N.C., where he became Assistant to the President. In subsequent mergers, he served with Southern Railway and finally with Norfolk Southern Corporation, from which he retired in September 1987. After his retirement, he wrote a weekly column, “From the Front Porch,” for The Daily Dispatch for several years.
Mr. Evans was a member of West End Baptist Church, where the funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. Richard Walker and the Rev. Robert L. Yates. Burial will follow in Island Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a sister, Jane Evans Hughes of Henderson; a brother, Marshall C. Evans of Raleigh; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of cherished friends.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be T.G. Boyd, Keith D. Evans, Marshall C. Evans Jr., David W. Evans, Kenneth H. Evans and Craig A. Evans.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 619 Dabney Drive, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to Hospice, 1937 N.C. Hwy. 39, Louisburg, N.C. 27549.

Gladys M.R. Hamm

HENDERSON -- Gladys Mae Robertson Hamm, 63, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Bloomington, Ind., and the daughter of the late Hezikiah Robertson and Mary E. Chestnut Robertson.
She was an employee of Quality Investments in Henderson and was the widow of Roger E. Hamm.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Rev. Nat Brummitt. Burial will follow at Warren Plains Memorial Garden.
Surviving are four brothers, Glenn Robertson, Ernest Robertson, Wendell Robertson and Thurman Robertson, all of Bloomington, Ind.; and two sisters, Norma Hacker of Martinsville, Ind., and Ruby James of Bloomington.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Thomas Hargrove Sr.

HENDERSON -- Thomas Hargrove Sr., 87, of 514 E. Rock Spring St. died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Thomas and Amanda Sneed Hargrove.
He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church No. 2, where he served as a member of the deacon board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Island Hill United Church of Christ by the Rev. Cornelius Ogburn. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Hattie Lewis of Kernersville and Annie Mae Somerville and Geneva Hawkins, both of Henderson; three sons, Robert Hargrove of Decatur, Ga., Bailey Hargrove of Roselle, N.J., and James A. Hargrove of Henderson; one brother, Arthur Lee Hargrove of South Boston, Va.; 30 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
