WARRENTON -- Howard King, 78, of the Liberia community, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at his residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Irene Parham

HENDERSON -- Irene Parham, 85, of 502 Hilliard St., died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Lola Pitchford

HENDERSON -- Lola Pitchford, 88, of Henderson, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Guardian Care of Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Dr. Mary Louise Touchet White

Dr. Mary Louise Touchet White, 78, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2001, after a brief illness at Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill, Va.
Dr. White was born in Escanaba, Mich., on May 3, 1922. She was the daughter of Roy and Gladys Touchet. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1945 and married Joseph M. White, M.D., of Baltimore, Md., in the same year. She practiced as an anesthesiologist at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J., from 1959 to 1987.
Since her retirement, Dr. White was a resident of Warrenton, N.C., where she counseled substance abusers and volunteered at the Warren Correctional Institution and the Addiction Recovery Center for Women in Henderson, N.C.
She is survived by her children, Joseph White of Greenwich, Conn., Stan White of Ledgewood, N.J., and Peggy Richardson of Warrenton, N.C.; three grandchildren; a brother, Tom Touchet of Warrenton, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family has requested donations in Dr. White’s name be made to the Addiction Recovery Center for Women, 320 Pettigrew Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536, (252) 430-0126.

Bessie C.E. Harris

HENDERSON -- Bessie Cornelis Evans Harris, 66, of 78 Big Ruin Creek Lane died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late William and Mabel Evans. She was the stepdaughter of the late Annie Rice Evans.
She was a member of Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today by Dr. C.B. Walton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Lawrence Leo Harris of Morristown, N.J.; four children, Ann Brooks of Rochester, N.Y., William A. Champion and Yvonne Harris, both of Henderson, and Rita Booker of Dover, N.J.; one brother, Walter A. Evans; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Howard King

WARRENTON -- Howard King, 78, of the Liberia community died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton. The Rev. Robert Burnette will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lewis family cemetery in Warrenton.
Surviving are one daughter, Wilhemina King Kersey of Louisburg; two sons, Browerson King and Hamilton King, both of Kittrell; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services until the hour of services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Joseph G. Ray Jr.

FRANKLINTON -- Joseph Graham Ray Jr., 52, of 252 Gordon Moore Road died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. He was the son of the late Evie Perry and Joseph Graham Ray Sr.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Surviving are his wife, Betty McGhee Ray; a son, Bobby Ray of the home; a stepson, Timothy Gilleland; a daughter, Rhonda Ray of Henderson; two stepdaughters, Sonja Grindle and Teresa Woodlief, both of Franklinton; three brothers, George Ray of Durham, Robert Ray of Creedmoor and Earl Ray of Fife, Va.; six sisters, Eloise Watson of Franklinton, Maggie Lou Allen and Virginia Perry, both of Richmond, Va., Evelyn Pendleton of Butner, Edna Washington of Stem and Nell Mederios of Bahama; and four grandchildren.
The family will be at the home at all times.
Memorials may be made to the Franklinton Rescue Service.
Arrangements are by Sandling Funeral Home.

Shirley S. Adcock

CREEDMOOR -- Shirley Stephenson Adcock, 63, of 3077 Hester Road died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at her home. The Johnston County native was the daughter of the late Amos and Mary Holland Stephenson.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was a teacher’s aide in Durham County schools.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Dawson and Dr. Marcus Tilley. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her husband, W. Horace Adcock; a daughter, Joni Adcock Autrey of Oxford; two sons, William Mark Adcock and David “Toby” Rogers, both of Creedmoor; a brother, Albert Allen Stephenson of Durham; and five grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Pleasant Grove Church Building Fund, c/o Guy Currin, Treasurer, 1155 Turner Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Edna J.S. Cotten

WILTON -- Edna Jeanette Strother Cotten, 77, of 2554 Flat Rock Road in the Wilton community died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of Otis and Mattie Clay Bernard Newton, and the widow of Robert Edmond Strother.
She attended Wilton schools and taught in Greene and Wake counties. She was a member of Grove Hill United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Grove Hill United Methodist Church in the Wilton community by the Revs. Diane Blanchard, Gala Collins and Tommy Robertson. Burial will follow in the Strother cemetery.
Surviving are her sister, Irene Saddler; her son, Robert Edmond Strother Jr.; her daughter, Gail S. Matt; her husband, Frank N. Cotten; four stepchildren, Celia M. Swanson, Cheryl M. Bowlin, Andrew N. Cotten and Jennifer L. Thomas; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Grove Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Edith S. Murphy, 2593 Flat Rock Road, Franklinton, N.C. 27525.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Florence S. Grissom

HENDERSON -- Florence Shaw Grissom, 76, of 1520 Lynne Ave. died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in Rose Manor Health Care Center in Durham. The Wake County native was the daughter of the late John and Victoria Leonard Shaw.
She was a retired bookkeeper after 30 years with the former Home Building Supply Co. of Henderson. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by Dr. Marion D. Lark.
Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Richard N. Grissom Jr.; a son, Mitchael D. Grissom of Henderson; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Lola Pitchford

HENDERSON -- Lola Pitchford, 88, of Henderson died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Guardian Care of Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Green Baptist Church in Warrenton by the Rev. Dennis Lindsay, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mabel Cheatham

HENDERSON -- Mabel Cheatham of 853 E. Andrews Ave. died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by Garnes Funeral Services.

Rebecca Hight Irby

GLADYS, Va. -- Rebecca Hight Irby, 76, of 1711 Goat Island Road, Gladys, Virginia, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, May 7, 2001. She was the loving wife of the late Terrence Elwyn Irby and a loving mother and grandmother.
Born May 19, 1924, in North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Dora Hight. She was a member of Edge Baptist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Glenn E. Irby and his wife, Mary, of Concord, Va., Joseph H. Irby and his wife, Teresa, of Gladys, Va., and John T. Irby of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Reba Stokes of Henderson, N.C., and Julia Wood of Corpus Christi, Texas; one grandson, Nathan Irby; two granddaughters, Sarah Irby and Kelly Irby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dora L. Irby, and one son, William Z. Irby.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, by the Rev. Andy Grose in Edge Baptist Church, Gladys, Va. Interment will follow in the Irby Family cemetery.
Finch & Finch Funeral Home, Gladys, is in charge of the arrangements.

Irene B. Parham

HENDERSON -- Irene Bullock Parham, 85, of 502 Hilliard St. died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Cora Bullock and Robert Hargrove. She was the widow of John Henry Parham.
She is a member of St. John Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by Dr. A.A. Brown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Rosa Lee Durham and Maggie Mae Terrell, both of Henderson; two sisters, Maggie Williams and Lucy Johnson, both of Henderson; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Bettie P. Taylor

WARRENTON -- Funeral services for Bettie Perry Taylor, 73, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Coley Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph N. Alexander. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Frank and Laura A. Davis Perry. She was the widow of Walter Jasper Taylor.
She joined the Shocco Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and attended the former Stoney Lawn School.
At the age of 18, she moved to New York. When her health failed, she returned to North Carolina and lived with her daughter in Charlotte.
Surviving are two daughters, Carrie Horne of Greensboro and Yvonne Stancil of Charlotte; a son, Rufus Taylor of Greensboro; a sister, Mary West of Henderson; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will meet with friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. before the service.
The body will be on view at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. today and will lie in state at the church for one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Alexander Funeral Home of Charlotte and Brown’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Junious L. Terry

HENDERSON -- Junious Leavy Terry, 76, of 142 Gillburg Estates died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical after a brief illness. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Claude and Zessie Terry.
He was a member of the Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ, where he served on the usher board, senior choir and trustee board and as an assistant chairman of the deacon board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ by pastor Isaac Thomas. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Etta Terry; a son, John J. Terry of Charlotte; two daughters, Mag Delores Terry and Evon Terry Macon, both of Henderson; a brother, James Melvin Terry of Henderson; a sister, the Rev. Clara L. Terry of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
Floral bearers will be deacons.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Rosa B.M. Byrd

BUTNER -- Rosa Bell Moore Byrd, 88, of 803 E. F St. died Friday, May 11, 2001, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Erick Morgan. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving is one sister, Addie Moore of Stamford, Conn.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
The family will receive visitors one hour before the services at the church and other times at the home of her niece, Phyllis Brooks, 803 E. F St., Butner.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Mable V. Cheatham

HENDERSON -- Mable Vaughan Cheatham, 78, of 853 E. Andrews Ave. died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Edward “Ed” Vaughan and Zyretha Peace.
She received her early education at Cedar Grove School and was a member of Illong Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Redbud Baptist Church by Dr. J.E. Hall and the Rev. James Lawson.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Melvin Cheatham Sr.; four sons, Melvin Cheatham Jr. of Middleburg and Randolph Cheatham, Leo Cheatham and Carl Cheatham, all of the home; two sisters, Estelle Mitchell and Dorothy Vaughan, both of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Clarence Glover, Jackie Foster, Timothy Wimbush, Deacon Thomas Alston, Wesley Lyons, Greg Foster, Albert Faines and Dennis Nicholson.
Floral bearers will be Shirley Peace, Tonya Hayes, Vickie Whitfield, Shonda Kingsberry, Natalie Watkins, Shirley Townes, Joyce Feggins and Clara Kingsberry.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Edith C. Mashburn

HENDERSON -- Edith Carroll Mashburn, 91, a resident of Woodlawn Retirement Home in Henderson, died Friday night at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of McMinn County, Tenn., and was the daughter of the late William Eli and Mary Ball Carroll.
She was the widow of William Leonard Mashburn and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson.
A memorial service will be led today at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Jerry Smith Funeral
Home Chapel in Athens, Tenn., by the Rev. Ansell Baker. Entombment will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens in Athens.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane M. McBride of Henderson and Martie M. Johnson of Athens, Ga.; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon in the Ladies Parlor of the First Baptist Church immediately after the memorial service and Tuesday morning immediately after the service at McMinn Memory Gardens. At other times they will be at the home of Tom and Jane McBride, 721 Matthews Road, Henderson, in the Watkins community.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church music department, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
The body will be taken from the J.M. White Funeral Home to the Jerry Smith Funeral Home.
Arrangements will be handled by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
