James H. Davis
HENDERSON -- James Henry Davis, 82, of the Vance Manor Nursing Home died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Jones Davis. He was the widower of Rosa Hargrove Davis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Kittrell by the Rev. Jimmie L. Whitehurst. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four sons, the Rev. George Davis of Greenville, Ronnie L. Davis and Kenneth L. Davis, both of Henderson, and Mitchell M. Davis of Kittrell; three daughters, Regina M. Davis, Doretha T. Davis and Pamela A. Whitley, all of Henderson; one brother, Lonnie Davis of Newark, N.J.; 26 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ronnie Davis, 709 N. Garnett St., Henderson.
Pallbearers will be Shelton Hargrove, Travis Davis, Marcell Davis, Shaun Hargrove, Ernest Hargrove and Jermanie Holden.

Virginia H. Eskridge
RUTHERFORDTON -- Virginia H. Eskridge, 76, of 330 N. Washington St. died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital. She was a native of Buncombe County and the daughter of the late William and Eunice Houser.
She was a member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church. She was a choir member, served on the Communion Committee and Church Circle, and was a Bible school teacher. She was a Girl Scout troop leader and Girl Scout cookie chairwoman of Rutherford County.
Surviving are her husband, Ed Webb Eskridge; one daughter, Susan Eskridge Rose of Henderson; one brother, Ralph W. Houser of Woodbridge, Va.; three sisters, Charlotte H. Smith of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Mildred H. Posey of Charlotte and Jeanette H. Mitchell of Greensboro; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Don Scofield. Burial will be in the Rutherfordton City cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at McMahan’s Funeral Home in Rutherfordton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

OXFORD -- David Dee Gooch, 94, of 109 Peace St. died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Brentwood Nursing Center.

Marie B. Terry
OXFORD -- Marie Booker Terry, 75, of the Oxford Manor Nursing Center died Monday, May 14, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Willie and Ozie Marrow Booker.
She was a member of the Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Presbyterian missionary, Christian Education Committee member, Sunday school teacher and usher.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Lee Terry Jr. of Ayden and Ruffin Terry III of Greensboro; two daughters, Mary C. Terry of Las Vegas and Christine Terry of Bullock; one sister, Mary Lou Barnes of Oxford; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Norman McDowell. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 9633 Lake Road, Bullock.

Grace S. Weaver
HENDERSON -- Grace Short Weaver, 95, formerly of Henderson, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Rollins Hills Rehabilitation Center in Sparta, Wis.
She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late Harry Hess and Edith Roth Short. She was the widow of Army Lt. Joseph Upton Weaver, M.D., a former health director for Vance County.
She was a graduate of Harris Teachers College and was a former schoolteacher.
She was an active member of the Church of the Holy Innocents, where a memorial service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Daniel Barker and Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will be in the National cemetery in Raleigh.
She is survived by twin sons, Joseph U. Weaver Jr. of Sparta and John S. Weaver of Henderson; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the Church of the Holy Innocents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Holy Innocents, 210 S. Chestnut St., Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to the Vance County Animal Shelter, 165 Vance Academy Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

George L. Bullock Jr.
VAUGHAN -- George L. Bullock Jr., 54, of Vaughan died Monday, May 14, 2001, from injuries in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Solid Rock Faith Ministries in Warrenton. The Rev. Moore H. Bynum, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Pattie L. Bullock of the home; four sisters, Annie M. Bullock of Boston and Pattie L. Palmer, the Rev. Viola B. Calixte and Evangelist Mary Bullock, all of Vaughan; and one brother, Willie L. Bullock of Vaughan.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel.

HENDERSON -- Estelle Edgerton, 71, of 1465 Newton Dairy Road died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.

Lester W. Ellis
MACON -- Lester Wayne Ellis, age 32, a resident of Rt. 1, Macon, died at his home on Wednesday, May 16, 2001. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Martha “Bonnie” Faulkner Ellis of Macon and the late Danny Dwight Ellis.
He was a self-employed landscaper.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one sister, Lisa Ellis Rollinson of Macon; one brother, David Dwight Ellis Sr. and wife Janet of Macon; one niece, Danielle Denise Ellis; three nephews, David Dwight Ellis Jr., Danny Wayne Ellis and Corey Alan Ellis, all of Macon.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home in Henderson. At other times they will be at the home of his mother at Rt. 1, Box 110, Macon, N.C.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jimmy Waddell, David Ellis Jr., Raymond Harrison, Mark Hamilton, Rodney Hamilton and Paul White. Arrangements are handled by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Thomas Gales
HENDERSON -- Thomas Gales, 65, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Senior Citizens Nursing Home. He was a Franklin County native and the son of the late Otis Gales and Iola Davis Gales.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services by the Rev. Jamil Crosson, assisted by the Rev. Dorothea Kelly. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving are three sisters, Mary Glover and Emma Grant, both of Henderson, and Orilee Grant of Maryland; and three brothers, Eddie Gales of Ohio and Willie Grant and Charlie Grant Jr., both of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Rosa Hart, 918 Lehman St.

Estelle K. Edgerton
HENDERSON -- Estelle Kearney Edgerton, 71, of 1465 Newton Dairy Road died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Charlie S. Kearney and Eva Moore Kearney.
She was a former employee of Americal and was a member of Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Church, where she served as a missionary.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Church by Bishop Johnnie L. Alston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy L. Debnam of Henderson; one son, Chester A. Edgerton of Henderson; four sisters, Dorothy L. Macon of Kittrell, Eva Mae Grimes of Plainfield, N.J., Oveta Jackson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lola Foster of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Charles Kearney Jr. of Augusta, Ga., and Macy Holden of Franklin County; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Church and all other times at the home.

David D. Gooch
OXFORD -- David Dee Gooch, 94, of 109 Peace St., Ox-ford, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Brentwood Nursing Center. He was a native of Dinwiddie, Va., and the son of the late Richard and Mary Gooch.
He was educated in Granville County public schools. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oxford, where he was a former president of the usher board. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 54.
Surviving is a daughter, Annie Deloris Nesbitt of Oxford.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lacy Joyner, pastor. Interment will be in the Hicks family cemetery.

Eddie H. Hamm
FRANKLINTON -- Eddie Harris Hamm, 84, died Thurs-day, May 17, 2001. She was a resident of Wellington Nursing Center of Knightdale. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Mamie Pitt-man and Edwin Harris. She was the widow of Marvin Hamm.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Fairview cemetery with the Rev. Frank Sossamon officiating.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas E. Hamm of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Kenneth W. Hamm of Raleigh; two daughters, Joyce King of Garner and Loria Pulley of Kittrell; one brother, Franklin R. Harris of Henderson; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Sunday at Sandling Funeral Home and other times at the home of Loria Pulley.

MACON -- John Milam Ross Sr., 75, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton. He was the son of the late Joseph Alfred and Margaret Milam Ross.
He was a farmer and carpenter and a member of the Warren Plains United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Warren Rural Fire Department, a former member of the Wise Ruritan Club and a former member of Hebron United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Shearin Ross; six sons, John M. Ross Jr. of Macon, Joseph A. Ross of Henderson, David W. Ross of Norlina, James H. Ross of Macon, Thomas A. Ross of Macon and Samuel R. Ross of Macon; one daughter, Margaret R. White of Norlina; two sisters, Mary R. Bagby of Macon and Peggy R. Pachmayr of Greensboro; and two brothers, Joseph A. Ross of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Samuel R. Ross of Macon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hebron United Methodist Church in Macon. Interment will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Macon.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons, John M. Ross Jr., John M. Ross III, Joseph A. Ross Jr., Thomas Alan Ross Jr., Robert A. Ross, T. Michael Matthews Jr. and Adam S. White.
Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Vaughan, Al Fleming, Donald Paynter, Phillip Parham, Sam Meador, Paul Brown and Steve Hale.

CREEDMOOR -- Graham Alvis Allen Sr., 86, of Highway 96 died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Graham Bragg and Mary Belle Floyd Allen.
He was a member of Brassfield Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a retired dairyman.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Brassfield Baptist Church by the Rev. Wesley Garner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Winston Allen; a daughter, Patricia Allen Stevens of Concord; a son, G. Alvis Allen Jr. of Raleigh; a sister, Mabel A. Harris of Creedmoor; a brother, Floyd Allen of Chesapeake, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Eddie L. Alston
WARRENTON -- Eddie Linwood Alston, 48, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville after a short illness. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late James McClellan Alston and Carrie Eleanor Park Alston.
He spent his youth in the Arcola and Parktown communities of Warren County and attended John R. Hawkins High School. He joined Spring Green Baptist Church at an early age and attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Arcola.
After employment in Baltimore as a security guard, he returned to Arcola, where he worked in lumber and farming for more than 20 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Arcola by the Rev. Will C. Tabron. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five sisters, Elsa Alston of Detroit, Faye Alston Cook of Charlotte, Maxine McArthur of Joppatown, Md., Marion A. Polk of Catonsville, Md., and the Rev. Sadie Woolford of Columbia, Md.
The family will meet with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Brown’s Funeral Services Chapel.
