Winifred M. Nunn

WARRENTON -- Winifred McWhorter Nunn, 87, of 144 N. Main St. died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Greensboro, Ga., native and daughter of the late John A. McWhorter and Annie M. Sanders McWhorter.
She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Warrenton Country Club. She was the widow of Milton C. McGuire and S.O. Nunn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Surviving is one brother, Sanders McWhorter of Roxboro.
Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Box 704, Warrenton, N.C. 27589.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Grace M. Overton

KITTRELL -- Grace Moss Overton, 77, a resident of 121 E. Main St., died Saturday afternoon, May 19, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Robert Thomas and Penola Clopton Moss.
She was retired from Harriet & Henderson Yarns and was a member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Kelley. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery in Kittrell.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy G. Overton and Nancy O. Owens, both of Kittrell; two sons, Bobby E. Overton of Winterville and Jerry A. Overton of Kittrell; five sisters, Lenis M. Hardison and Rachel M. Garrett, both of Kittrell, Eunice M. Alford of Raleigh, Eva C. Moss of Wilson and Jo Ann M. Harper of Gibsonville; two brothers, Hector N. Moss and Robert T. Moss Jr., both of Kittrell; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Gladys P. Spruill

WARRENTON -- Gladys Powell Spruill, 76, of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Walter Raleigh Powell and Mamie Alston Powell and the widow of the late James Arthur Spruill.
She joined Shiloh Baptist Church when her parents moved to the Bethlehem community and maintained her membership there while residing in Washington for more than 60 years. She also was a charter member of Evangel Cathedral in Upper Marlboro, Md., where she was an usher, Sunday school teacher and missionary worker, as well as a fellowship member of Capital View Baptist Church in Washington, where she taught Sunday school.
She made several pilgrimage trips to the Holy Land for Bible study and held a certificate in the Old and New Testaments from Washington Bible College.
After retirement from her job as a nurse in Washington, she worked as a pediatric private-duty nurse and served with the Visiting Nurse Association. She also was a certified nutritionist and held a certificate in early childhood development from the University of the District of Columbia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Arcola by the Rev. Will C. Tabron. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Miriam Spruill-Green of Sterling, Va.; a son, James Arthur Spruill II of Washington; two sisters, Sylvia Maude Powell Copeland of Buffalo, N.Y., and Eva Marie Cox of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Brown’s Funeral Services.
The body will lie in state for one hour at the church before the service.

Bobby B. Finch

LOUISBURG -- Bobby Bertram Finch, 66, of Louisburg, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Henry Pusey Finch and Rosalyn Burgess Finch.
Funeral servcies will be held at 2 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Corinth Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Patterson Finch; daughters, Cindy F. Shockley of Raleigh, Teresa F. Daniel of Youngsville and Amy F. Napier of Louisburg; one son, Timothy Finch of Louisburg; three sisters, Joyce Harris of Raleigh, Shirley Tippett of Louisburg and Jean Walton of Saluda, Va.; one brother, James W. Finch of Wake Forest; and four grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lancaster Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Lancaster Funeral Home of Louisburg.

Patricia A. Morris

RALEIGH -- Patricia Ann Morris, 50, 3525 Brooks Drive, Raleigh, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, after a long battle with cancer. She was raised in Butner, Oxford, and Henderson.
She was a 1969 graduate of Oxford Webb High School, a 1971 graduate of Peace College and a 1973 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
Following graduation, she taught Spanish at Hale High Shcool in Raleigh. Afterward, for more than 20 years, she was a leading sales representative for the College Divisions of MacMillan Publishing and Prentice Hall Publishing. She was well-known and well-respected among her colleagues. She was a member of Oxford Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by Dr. J. Steven Bolton and the Rev. Terry Hall. Burial will follow in Enon Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her parents, Carlyle and Lydia Brinkley Morris of Oxford.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lineberger Cancer Center, U.N.C. School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7295.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

WARRENTON -- Arthur Parks, 75, of the Parktown community, Warrenton, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Geneva B. Pointer

GREENSBORO -- Geneva Best Pointer, 68, of 5000 Fairport Road, diedk Friday, May 18, 2001, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.
She was a member of the New Johnathan Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, William L. Pointer; two sons, William L. Pointer Jr. of Oxford and Rodney J. Pointer of Atlanta, Ga.; adopted daughter, Catherine Pointer Moore of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Colonias J. Best of Elm City; two sisters, Mattie Best Gilliam of Henderson and Rematha Best Shaw of Hyattville, Md.; and two adopted grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the New Johnathan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert E. Page. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church.

Polly H. Stanfield

CREEDMOOR -- Polly Howerton Stanfield, 66, of 2136 Sam Moss-Hayes Road, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the home of her daughter. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late George and Nancy Morgan Howerton.
She attended the First Baptist Church in Creedmoor and was owner and operator of Stanfield Family Clothing.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Don Brown. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her husband, Chemis O. Stanfield of the home; two daughters, Rhonda S. Wioskowski and Brenda S. Chappell, both of Creedmoor; two sisters, Eula Litzaw of Raleigh, Edna Brogden of Charlotte; and three granddaughters.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther Parkway, Suite 112, Durham, N.C. 27707.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.

Dorothy Turner

WARRENTON -- Dorothy Turner, 83, of Newark, N.J., formerly of Warrenton, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Newark, N.J.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Celester M. Venable

HENDERSON -- Celester Marrow Venable, 85, of 1585 Gun Club Road, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. She was a Vance County native, the daughter of the late Nannie Ella Marrow and the widow of Graham Venable Sr.
She joined Mt. Calvary Holiness Church in Townsville and served on the Missionary Circle and Mother Board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Calvary Holy Church by the Rev. Hurley Richardson, assisted by the Rev. Waverly Mills. Burial will follow in the Philadelphia Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are five daughter, Dorothy Christmas of Williamsboro, Celester Venable, Pearl Young, Ruth Sparks and Julia Foster, all of Henderson; seven sons, Graham Venable Jr. of Townsville, Thomas Venable of Elizabeth, N.J., Melvin Venable of Roselle, N.J., Charlie Venable of Oxford, Marcellus Venable of Raleigh, Bailey Venable and Willie Venable, both of Henderson; 35 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service and other times at the residence.
The body will be on view at the church one hour before the services.

Baby Josiah T. Williamson

OXFORD -- Baby Josiah Tilson Williamson, 4-month-old son of John and Brenda Royster Williamson, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at the Cornerstone Christian Community Church by the Rev. J. Phillip Betts and the Rev. Mark Royster. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are two brohters, Johnathan H. Williamson and Jeremiah E. Williamson, both of the home; three sisters, Sierra J. Williamson, Camirra M. Williamson and Porche N. Williamson, all of the home; maternal grandparents, Henry E. Royster Jr. and Nannie Y. Royster of Oxford; and maternal great-grandmother, Rose Lee Yancey of Louisburg.
Viewing was held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.
The family will receive friends at the home, 116 Clover Lane.

Elizabeth B. Boyd

CREEDMOOR -- Elizabeth Bass Boyd, 84, of 2 Colton Court, Durham, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at IHS in Durham. She was a Sampson County native and the daughter of the late Iverson and Julia Bass. She was the widow of Nelson T. Boyd.
She was retired from Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Forest Gale.
Surviving are one daughter, Delores Butler Medley of Durham; four sisters, Mary Carpenter and Jean Finch, both of Creedmoor, Joyce Miller of Rougemont and Brenda Rogerson of Timberlake; three brothers, Merlin Bass of Oxford and William “Bill” Bass and Johnny Bass, both of Creedmoor; and one granddaughter.
The omission of flowers is requested. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, DMC, Durham, N.C. 27710.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at 2 Colton Court, Durham.

Martha E. Boyd

CHASE CITY, Va. -- Martha Elizabeth Boyd, 46, of Chase City, Va., died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, Va. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Larry K. Smith and Ruby S. Bullock.
She attended Mecklenburg County public schools and was employed by Red Barn Food Store in Chase City before her health began to decline.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Silone Baptist Church in Chase City, with the Rev. Melvin J. Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Silone Memorial Garden in Chase City.
Surviving are one daughter, Brenda J. Small of Norlina; three sisters, Ruby Anna Dailey of Chase City and Mary Alice Williams and Easther Smith of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, John and Rayon Smith; and three grandsons.

WARRENTON -- Arthur Parks, 75, of the Parktown community, Warrenton, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton. The Rev. Sadie Woolford will officiate. Burial will follow in the Spring Green Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Queen Parks; two sisters, Precious Henderson of Philadelphia and Tamar Seward of Detroit; and two brothers, Thomas H. Park of Detroit and Vertis Park of Baltimore.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

Dorothy W. Shaheen

NAPLES, Fla. -- Dorothy Wortham Shaheen, 83, of Naples, Fla., died Monday, May 21, 2001. Formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla., she had been a Naples resident since 1991. She was born August 30, 1917, in Henderson, N.C., the daughter of George Alexander and Essie Burroughs Wortham.
Mrs. Shaheen is survived by her children, Jean Krehling of Naples, Edward Neil (Zorina) Lane of Naples and Ralph Douglas (Patricia) Lane of Malvern, Pa.; her sisters, Marie Woodcock of Raleigh, N.C., and Lucille Perkinson of Warrenton, N.C.; grandchildren Debbie Ross, Edward B. (Sarah), Scott D. and William T. “Billy” (Lori) Krehling and Jeff Lane, all of Naples, and Steve Lane of New York City, N.Y.; great-grandchildren Stephanie, Shaunna, Courtney, Samantha, Max and Kendal; numerous nieces and nephews; dear friends of many years Eva Krehling and Mary Dorrity; and many friends at Jamestown St. Petersburg.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 25, 2001, at 7 p.m. at the Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, Naples.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home an hour prior to the service.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice for the loving care provided to Dorothy and her family.

RICHMOND, Va. -- Rickie Cornell Downey Jr., 17, of Richmond died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Vance County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond by Bishop James Terry of Henderson.
Surviving are his parents, Rickie Downey Sr. and Peggy Downey, both of Richmond; one brother, Corey M. Downey of Richmond; his paternal grandmother, Mary Downey of Oine; his maternal grandmother, Gloria Hawkins of Richmond; and his maternal grandfather, John M. Grant Sr., and his stepgrandmother, Barbara Johnson, both of Richmond.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at A.D. Price Funeral Home in Richmond.

Esther E. Faulkner

MARION -- Esther Ellis Faulkner, 86, a former resident of Oakdale Circle in Henderson, died Tuesday night, May 22, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Marion. She was a native of Wayne County and was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Kate Vinson Ellis and the widow of N.Q. Faulkner.
She was a graduate of the Oxford Orphanage, a retired nurse’s aid at Maria Parham Hospital and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Henderson.
Graveside services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Sunset Gardens in Henderson by the Rev. Richard Brand Jr.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Ellis Faulkner of Nebo and Ronald Van Faulkner of Statesville; two sisters, Hazel E. Shirley of Kannapolis and Nina E. Pierce of Goldsboro; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service at Sunset Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Robert L. Hock

KITTRELL -- Robert L. Hock, 88, of 23 Hock’s Way in the Bobbitt community died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Royal Isaac Hock and Corrine Hedgepeth Hock Strickland.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. William “Bud” Budzinski. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Laura Strother Hock; three sons, Maurice Lee Hock of Franklinton, Robert Earl Hock of Bradenton, Fla., and Conrad Hock of Kittrell; two sisters, Grace Hock Wheeler of Henderson and Nell Hock Smith of Kittrell; 10 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William Royal “Roy” Hock.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Joshua Robert Hock, Steven Conrad Hock, Maurice Todd Hock, David Scott Hock, Milton W. Tart, William Raymond Hock, Kevin Wayne Tart, C.W. Hedgepeth and Nelson Rembert Hedgepeth.
The Allen Bible Class of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
