John M. Valentine

CHAPEL HILL -- John M. Valentine, 76, of 32 Canterbury Court in Henderson died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was a native of Welch, W.Va.
He was a member of Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as a trustee and a volunteer tutor. He was a graduate of Bluefield State College with a degree in business administration and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran. In 1948, he began a long and distinguished career with the federal government, first as an electrical machine operator for the Veterans Administration. He retired after 34 years as supervisor of computer operations and computer specialist with the Department of the Navy. He served as treasurer of the Retired Federal Employees Association and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Albert Moses.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Henderson Valentine; three daughters, Freida Danette Valentine Wray of Bowie, Md., Karen Elaine Valentine Bryant of Baltimore and Wyndetta Romaine Valentine Taylor of Fort Washington, Md.; two sons, Terrence Elliot Valentine of Baltimore and Daren Clayton Valentine of Middletown, Md.; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour before the funeral at the church, and other times at the residence.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Eddie Bullock

MANSON -- Eddie Bullock, 70, of Manson died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Guiding Star Holiness Church in Manson. The Rev. John McKinnon, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Guiding Star Holiness Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita W. Bullock; three daughters, Vanessa Lott of New York, Mary Ruth Yarborough of the home and Gale Milam of Man-son; two sons, Eddie Bullock Jr. and Thornton Bullock, both of Manson; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha Hargrove.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Sallie Ann Crews

WARRENTON -- Sallie Ann Crews, 53, of Route 1, Norlina, died Friday, May 25, 2001.
A Warren County native, she was born Oct. 20, 1947, the daughter of Irene Goode Crews and the late Joseph Crews.
She was a member of Snow Hill Baptist Church and a graduate of John R. Hawkins High School. She was employed by Cochrane Furniture Co., which only weeks ago recognized her for years of exemplary service with a framed certificate, a gold-and-ruby pin and an engraved key chain.
As a gesture of appreciation for the care he mother received, she recently presented two plaques to the Guardian Care Nursing Home in honor of the staff and in recognition of Nurses’ Week.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Snow Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. A.F. Horton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her mother, who is at Guardian Care in Henderson; a sister, Shirley C. Street of Durham; and five brothers, Samuel Crews of Detroit, Charles L. Crews of Soul City, D. Walter Crews of Warrenton William D. Crews of Norlina, and Roy L. Crews Sr. of Wise.
There will be a visitation at the church one hour before the funeral.
Arrangements are by Brown’s Funeral Services.

L.A. ‘Clitty’ Hawks

NORLINA -- L.A. “Clitty” Hawks died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

James E. Jefferson Sr.

HENDERSON -- James Edward Jefferson Sr., 48, of 1025 Thomas Road in the Williamsboro community died Friday, May 25, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Larsie Rena Hargrove Jefferson and Anthony Jefferson Sr.
He was educated in the Vance County public schools and worked at Harriet & Henderson Yarns for 21 years before his health declined.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Woodsworth Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Harris, assisted by the Rev. Glendora Hargrove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Della Boyd Jefferson; two sons, James E. Jefferson Jr. of the home and Donnell Jefferson of Kittrell; two sisters, Nannie Williams and Gloria Moore, both of Henderson; three brothers, Joe Hargrove of the Bronx, N.Y., Daniel Jefferson of Boydton, Va., and Bobby Jefferson of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services and other times at the home. The body will be on view at the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Annie Palmer

WARRENTON -- Annie Palmer, 85, of the Jordan Hill community died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jordan Hill Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. John Rooks, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five children, Hattie Hockaday of Texas, James L. Palmer of New York, and Marietta Davis, John O. Palmer and Gale Henderson of North Carolina; two brothers, Robert and Walter, both of New Jersey; two sisters, Olivia Pittman of Florida and Mary E. Leonard of New York; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Julia L. Perry

WARRENTON -- Julia L. Perry, 82, of the Inez community in Warrenton died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at St. Stephen Baptist Church in the Inez community. The Rev. Junious Debnam, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Carrie Alston of Warrenton, Cleo Johnson of Upper Marlboro, Md., Hilda Flood of Upper Marlboro and Ernestine Perry of Upper Marlboro; one son, Nathaniel Perry of Upper Marlboro; one sister, Lucy Timmons of Warrenton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at St. Stephens Baptist Church in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Oscar Thomas Blackwell

HENDERSON — Oscar Thomas Blackwell, 41, of 271 S. Beckford Dr., died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Mr. Blackwell was the son of Nathaniel and the late Oscar Mae (Williams) Blackwell. He was a graduate of Vance Senior High School and did further study at Livingston College in Salisbury. He received his nursing degree from Vance-Granville Community College.
Survivors include: one daughter, Tameshia Chavis; his father; one sister, Mrs. Lisa B. Wiggins; one brother, William A. Blackwell; three Godchildren, Patricia, Renee and Robert; his fiancee, Maxine Foster; and one grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kesler Temple AME Zion Church, by the Rev. Nathaniel Mitchell. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Danny Roberts, Aaron Allen, Cornell Alston, Thomas Williams, Robert Davis and Andrew Jackson.
The family will receive friends at the home, and at 502 E. Winder St. in Henderson. Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and again from 9 a.m. until noon on Wednesday at the Garnes Funeral Chapel.

James T. Bowie

OXFORD — James T. Bowie, 84, of 3600 Highway 15 South, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Bowie was a native of Queens County, N.Y., and was a retired clerk of the utility company.
His remains have been forwarded to the Richards Funeral Home of Riverdale, N.Y. Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of local arrangements.

Morris ‘Chicken’ Durham

DURHAM — Morris “Chicken” Durham of Warren County died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at the Duke University Hospital.
Arrangements are pending with the R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Joseph A. Tripp Germain

CREEDMOOR — Joseph A. Tripp Germain, 17, of 1568 Tally Ho Road, Stem, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in a bicycle accident on the Jack Clement Road in Stem.
A native of Onandagua County, N.Y., he was the son of Michael and Faith Tripp Germain. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Creedmoor and was employed by Time Warner Cable TV.
Survivors include: his parents; one sister, Brandi Germain of Stem; his maternal grandmother, Dora May Tripp of Oswego, N.Y.; and his paternal grandparents, William and Jean Germain and Gloria German, all of New York.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Creedmoor by the Rev. Don Brown. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Creedmoor.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church of Creedmoor; P.O. Box 38; Creedmoor, N.C., 27522.
Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor is in charge of arrangements.

Alexander Greenlee

DURHAM — Alexander Greenlee died Monday, May 28, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital here.
Arrangements are pending with the R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Lucas Allen ‘Clitty’ Hawks

NORLINA — Lucas Allen ‘Clitty’ Hawks, 75, of Norlina, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Mr. Hawks was the son of the late Tasker Taylor Hawks and Irma Allen Hawks. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 25 years. He also was a member of the Norlina Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include: his wife, Alice Hundley Hawks; one son, Allen Jackson Hawks of Mebane; one daughter, Vickie Hawks Bissette of Wilson; and four grandchildren.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at the Norlina Methodist Church, under direction of Rev. Bryan Huffman and Rev. Jim Bailey. Burial followed at the Hundley Family cemetery of Norlina.
Arrangements were by the Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Nathaniel Jones

DURHAM — Nathaniel Jones, 80, of Warrenton, died Monday, May 28, 2001, in Durham.
Arrangements are pending with the R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Robert McKnight

HENDERSON — Master Sgt. Robert McKnight, ret., of 807 Patton Circle, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at his home.
Arrangements are pending with the Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Edgerton Plummer

HENDERSON — Edgerton Plummer, 58, of Ridgeway, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Survivors include: two children, Barbara A. Plummer of Ridgeway and Edgerton Plummer III of Henderson; six sisters, Lucy Walker of Englewood, N.J., Clara Clark and Patricia Plummer, both of Ridgeway, and Muriel, Freda and Cheryl Plummer, all of Hackensack, N.Y.; four brothers, Willie Plummer of Charlotte, Joseph Plummer of Ridgeway, James Plummer of Richmond, Va., and Frank Plummer of Macon; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ridgeway Baptist Church, under direction of Rev. W.T. Ramey III. Burial will follow in the Plummer Family cemetery.
Arrangements are by the R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Delores Scott

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Delores Scott, 54, formerly of Warren County, died Friday, May 26, 2001, at the Woodhaull Medical Center of Brooklyn.
Arrangements are pending with the R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

John M. Valentine

HENDERSON — Services for John M. Valentine have been rescheduled for noon Wednesday at Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to services.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials can be made to: National Cancer Institute; NCI Financial Management Branch; Building 31, Room 11A16; 9000 Rockville Pike; Bethesda, MD, 20892.

Lawrence M. Haithcock

MACON -- Lawrence Malvin Haithcock, 85, of Macon died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Leonard W. Haithcock and Lottie Hicks Haithcock.
He and his wife owned and operated Haithcock’s Store in Macon until their retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the former CCC Camps and a member of the Macon Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hilliard Haithcock; one son, Len Haithcock; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rob Evans. Interment will follow at Greenwood cemetery in Macon.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Emma F. Lyon

CREEDMOOR -- Emma Francis Lyon, 84, of 319 Lyon St. died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Robert F. McKnight Jr.

HENDERSON -- Retired Sgt. Robert F. McKnight Jr., 59, of 807 Patton Circle died Monday, May 28, 2001, at his residence. He was the son of Alice Brodie McKnight and the late Robert F. McKnight Sr.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He retired after 21 years in the U.S. Army. He was chaplain of the Henry S. Peoples Chapter No. 67 of the Disabled American Veterans.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ratliff. Burial will be held Sunday in Sand Hill military cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Burwell McKnight; his mother, Alice Brodie McKnight of Henderson; two sisters, Harriett Powell of Henderson and Peggie Phillips of the Bronx, N.Y.; and one brother, the Rev. John McKnight of Kittrell.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
The family will receive visitors at the residence.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
