Helen Majewski Antosh

HENDERSON -- Helen Majewski Antosh, age 89, a resident of 114 Diamond Point Lane, Pool Rock Plantation, died Sunday, June 3,2001 in the E.E. Toney Rest Home in Oxford.
She was a native of Luzerne County, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Frank and Aniela Czajkowski Majewski, and the widow of the late Casimir Antosh.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donald Vaughan.
Surviving is her daughter-law, Shirley Antosh, of Henderson; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Michael Antosh.
The family will receive friends Wednesday following the services at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Vance County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, c/o Miss Frances Polston, 1611 Parker Lane, Henderson, N. C. 27536
J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carl E. Brown Sr.

HENDEROSN -- Carl Edward Brown Sr., 76, of 103 Strickland Drive, Smithfield, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late James Edward and Laura Belle Shearin Brown.
He was a retired salesman with Globe Life Insurance Company. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Smithfield.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel by Dr. Sam Weeks. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah C. Hathaway of Smithfield; three sons, Carl E. Brown Jr. of Wilson, James Ronald Brown of Hillsborough and Gary Malone Brown of Durham; a stepson, Howard Gray Hansley of Smithfield; three brothers, James L. Brown, Cecil D. Brown and A.Q. “Skip” Brown, all of Henderson; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of James and Robin Brown, 155 W. Belle St., Henderson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Free Will Baptist Church, 2033 Smith Road, Smithfield, N.C. 27577.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Juanita S. Buchanan

CREEDMOOR -- Juanita Strange Seamster Buchanan, age 77, a resident of 2128 Lyon Station Road, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Clyde and Cora Mills Strange, and was the widow of Addie Steamster and Otha C. Buchanan.
She was a member of the Harriett Baptist Church were funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Chris Sorensen. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens in Henderson.
She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Seamster of Creedmoor; two sons, Addie B. “Mickey” Seamster, Jr. of Lillington and Jason W. Seamster of Creedmoor; two sisters, Ardell Harris of Henderson and Marjorie Hale of Jacksonville, Florida; and one grandson, Phillip Broadwell, Jr.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home in Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be: Tim Strange, William Weaver, Sr., Lawrence Hilliard, Timmy Baynes, Jake Roberson, Brent Dilliard and Billy Perry.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Ruben Daniel

HENDERSON -- Ruben Daniel, 78, of 3025 N.C. 39 Hwy. North, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Johnnie E. Dargan

OXFORD -- Johnnie Evander Dargan, 93, of 3043 Sterl Carrington Road, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the Granville Medical Center.
He was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley D. Daniels of the home; two sons, Lenwood J. Dargan of Greensboro and Robert J. Dargan of Oxford; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.

Rosa M. Harris

HENDERSON -- Rosa Mae Harris, 69, of 280 S. Beckford Drive, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Robert and Bettie Young. She was the widow of Samuel Harris.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Hawkins Chapel Baptist Church in Franklin County by the Rev. W.S. Taylor. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Helen Sullivan of Augusta, Ga., Doris Dunston of Louisburg, Peggy Harris of the home and Nicole Harris of Drewry; four sons, Terry Harris and Johnny Harris, both of Perth Amboy, N.J., Celesta Harris and Dexter Harris, both of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Sgt. 1st Class (Ret.) Gilbert L. Hawkins Jr.

HENDERSON -- Sgt. 1st Class (ret.) Gilbert Lee Hawkins Jr., 40, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Radcliff, Ky. He was a Vance County native and the son of Gilbert Lee Hawkins Sr. and Velma Ruth Durham Hawkins.
He attended Vance Senior High School and served his country in the military for 20 years before retiring on June 1, 2001. His retirement ceremony was held May 14, 2001.
Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins served with D 1/72 in Korea as a tank gunner and tank commander. He qualified his tank as distinguished during five gunnery densities. In 1982, during Operation FOAL EAGLE, Sgt. Hawkins took command of his platoon, maneuvering and fighting his platoon on the objective (the only platoon to actually reach the objective during Operation FOAL EAGLE.)
While Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins was assigned to the 67th Armor Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas, he was a tank commander. During his service in the 67th Armored, he participated in six tank gunnery densities, where he earned a superior qualification record for the entire time he was a tank commander with Company B. Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins also led the way for his platoon in many local field training exercises and rotations to the National Training Center.
He was next assigned as a platoon sergeant with A Troop, 1/12 Cav, over several more senior NCOs. During this tour of duty, SSG Hawkins immediately trained his platoon to be one of the best in the squadron. His platoon qualified as a top platoon in the squadron on Tank Table XII and retained that honored position through the next three squadron gunnery densities. Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins earned many awards for his superior attitude and leadership.
Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins deployed to Operation Desert Storm as a tank commander with the 1st Calvary Division’s “Black Jack Brigade.” Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins maneuvered his tank over 400 kilometers through heavy combat operations against Iraq’s Republican Guard, including the famous assault up the Wadi Al-Batin. He was accredited with 10 tank kills and several more armored personnel carrier kills. He led his tank to accomplishing its mission with no loss of life or injuries among his crew.
After his service with the 1st Calvary Division, Sgt. 1st Class Hawkins served as an instructor and supervisor at the 3rd Battalion, 81st Armor Regiment’s Tank Driver Simulator facility, within the 1st Armor Training Brigade at Fort Knox, Ky. He mentored and coached armor crewmen trainees just entering the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps.
He received the following awards: Order of St. George, MSM, ARCOM (40LC) and AAM (30LC).
Surviving are: his mother, Velma R. Hawkins of Henderson; his father, Gilbert Lee Hawkins Sr. of the Greystone community; one sister, Cheryl Hawkins of Henderson; one stepsister, Pantheria “Pam” Hawkins of Henderson; three brothers, Dwayne Hawkins, Charles Hawkins and Brian Hawkins, all of Henderson; and his grandmother, Evelyn Durham of Henderson.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Brookston Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas E. Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service and other times at the residence of his mother, Velma Ruth Hawkins, 42 N.C. 39 South-Loop Road, Lot No. 21.
Pallbearers will be the U.S. Army Battalion of Fort Bragg and U.S. Army of Kentucky.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service Inc.

Carrie B.S. Murray

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Carrie Belle Shealy Murray, 80, died Sunday, June 3, 2001. She was a native of Lexington County and the daughter of the late George A. and Allie Josephine Shumpert Spires. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Collie Shealy, and 2nd husband, Henry Branham.
She was a member of Covenant Community Fellowship Church and Women of Worth. She was retired from Lexington Sportswear.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Covenant Community Fellowship Church, 1111 Mason Road in Columbia, S.C.. Burial will follow in Lexington Memorial cemetery. The Rev. Amos Hann will officiate.
The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Houston, Charles Houston, James Moseley, John Dew, Dwayne Shealy and Billy Kirby. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Lasater, Charles Martin, William Bell, Bill Gaddis, David Williams and Don Lavery.
Surviving are her husband, Homer Murray of Columbia, S.C.; sons, Alvin Shealy of Henderson, Robert Shealy of Yakima, Wash., and Tommy Shealy of Columbia, S.C.; daughters, Alene Ayscue of Henderson, Annie Kirby of Pelion, S.C., Betty Simmons of West Columbia, S.C., and Sarah Houston of Highlands; brother, Cromer Spires of Norwood; sister, Louise Bland of Conway, S.C.; 27 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive freinds from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Covenant Community Church Missions Fund.

Johnnie M. Roberts

HENDERSON -- Johnnie Mark Roberts, 48, of 2931 Thomas Road, Lot 6, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Ludowici, Calif.
He was a member of Voice of Deliverance Church where he served on the Board of Deacons.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jones; a stepdaughter, Shirleen Harris of the home; two sisters, Dorothy Adams of Hinesville, Ga., and Lelia Shuman of Midway, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson by Elder Charlies Jones. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Ruth M. Vollmer

BUNN -- Ruth Mullen Vollmer, 89, of 615 N.C. Hwy. 98, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg. She was a Franklin County native, the daughter of the late H.H. Mullen and Rosa Tant Mullen, and the widower of N.J. Vollmer Sr.
Funeral mass will be held at 8 p.m. today at Saint Eugene Catholic Church in Wendell with Father Tom Watkins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. prior to the funeral mass.
The body will lie in state from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church for those who wish to have private prayer.
A private burial for the immediate family will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Vollmer Family cemetery.
Surviving are her children, Helen Rae of Fairfax, Va., John Vollmer of Bunn, Catherine Lombana of Farmville, Va., and Bernie Vollmer of Henderson; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Saint Eugene Catholic Church Building Fund, 608 Lions Club Road, P.O. Box 188, Wendell, N.C. 27591.
Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home of Wendell.

Willie C. Adcock

HENDERSON -- Willie Calvin Adcock, 72, of 822 Nelson St., Henderson, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at his home.
Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Otha David and Mary Hester Adcock. He was the widower of Doris Owens Adcock.
Mr. Adcock was a retired maintenance supervisor with Harriet & Henderson Yarns Inc. He was a veteran of the United States Army. An active member of Calvary Baptist Church, he sang in the church choir. He was a former deacon and had held several other church offices over the years.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Gene Wood, Dr. Rod Bell and the Rev. Jesse Matthews. Burial will follow in Stovall cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Wanda A. Riggan of Henderson; two sons, Willie E. Adcock of Henderson and Robert C. Adcock of Virginia Beach, Va.; his beloved sweetheart, Alice N. Lawson of Henderson; four sisters, Hallie A. Saunders of Henderson, Ann A. Hite of Oxford, Gladys A. Morris of Berea and Linda A. Hobson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a brother, Winston C. Adcock of Stovall; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David R. Adcock.
The family received friends Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ed Stamper, Ricky Etheridge, Ray Branch, Mike Catlett, David Saunders, Milton Saunders, Brent Saunders, Charles Ayscue and Billy Lovings. The Adult Sunday School Class of Calvary Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Elijah Hargrove Jr.

BRONX, N.Y. -- Elijah Hargrove Jr., 63, of the Bronx, formerly of Warren County, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Our Ladies of Mercy Hospital in New York.
Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services.

Thomas O. Nelson

HENDERSON -- Thomas Omega Nelson, 88, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Largo, Fla. He was a native of Henderson.
He managed Brookside Dairy, a family-owned and -operated business in Henderson, until the late 1950s, followed by his employment with the city of Henderson’s water plant until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the local Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner in Raleigh.
Surviving are two sons, William Nelson of Largo, Fla., and James Nelson of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Elmwood cemetery.

Virginia A. Smith

HENDERSON -- Virginia Ayscue Smith, 71, of 4155 Highway 96 South, Oxford, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Henry Clayton Ayscue Sr. and Lucinda Victoria Wilkes Ayscue.
She was a retired employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns Inc. and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. David Black. Burial will follow in the Oakwood cemetery in Louisburg.
Surviving are a daughter, Vickie C. Sanders of Oxford; four sons, James C. Collier of Henderson, Randy T. Collier of Zebulon, Donald R. Collier of Henderson and Terry L. Collier of Williamsboro; a brother, Henry Clayton Ayscue Jr. of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of William and Vickie Sanders, 4157 Highway 96 South in Oxford.
Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Catherine S. Trent

OXFORD -- Catherine Smith Trent, 70, of Old Route 75 died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Worth Arber and Ola Lee Claiborn Smith. She was the wife of Vest Trent.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and was retired from Burlington Mills.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Ricky Easter. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Ann W. Cooke of Oxford; three sons, Frank C. Wood of Williamsboro and Robert L. Wood and Thomas R. Wood, both of Oxford; a brother, Tenny Smith of Oxford; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Turner and Elsie Inscoe.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at 305 Broad St., Oxford.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Ethleen S. Brown

TARBORO -- Ethleen S. Brown, 79, died Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert E. Burns III officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was born in Vance County to the late Adkin A. & Elsie Watkins Stainback. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Brown, and a son, John W. Brown Jr.
Surviving are granddaughters Mary Ann Brown of Greenville and Eliza Brown Barfield of Florida; grandson John W. Brown III and wife Cora, of Whitakers; brothers Adkin A. Stainback Jr. and wife Hilda, of Morehead City, and Brady T. Stainback of Louisburg; aunts Ada N. Nannon of Henderson and Rachel Mangum of Pine Knoll Shores; and five great-grandchildren.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends at Carlisle Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Lizzie B. Coker-Jackson

RICHMOND, Va. -- Lizzie Bell Coker-Jackson, 81, of Richmond, formerly of Wise, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Rosa Epps Burchette.
She was educated in the Wise County public schools.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. C.E. Leath. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Jennie Rose Bullock, Amber Barksdale and Yvette Hinton, all of Richmond; her sons, Charles Caesar Coker, Clyde A. Coker and John Coker, all of Richmond; two sisters, Lucy Chavis of Richmond and Inez Bullock of Manson; one brother, Orange Austin Burchette of Manson; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.
