Emma M.W. Carlton
HENDERSON -- Emma Mattie William Carlton, 51, of 13081 Hwy. 39 North, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Mary Gladys Alston and Joe Williams Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hargrove Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donnie L. Jones. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Richard Williams of Lexington, Ky.; one daughter, Alica Latif Carlton of Albany; one brother, Joe Williams of Durham; three sisters, Doris Elain Turner and Gracie Williams, both of Henderson, and Kizzie Drayton of Durham; stepmother, Catherine Vann Williams of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Bessie Hargrove, 219 Howell Road in the Townsville Community.
The body will be on view from 12 p.m. today until taken to the church one hour before the services.

Mary E. Clark
OXFORD -- Mary Eakes Clark, 78, of 111 West Quail Ridge Road, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Robert L. and Sudie Currin Eakes.
She was a former member of Mt. Creek Baptist Church and presently a member of Oxford Baptist Church. She was retired from the Granville County School system, served on the Granville County Board of Education, served as a Guardian Ad Litem and a member of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Steven Bolton. Burial will be in Mt. Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Dr. Delos Miles and Dr. Steven Bolton will officiate.
Surviving are her husband, C. Hesley Clark of the home; five daughters, Judy Crumpler of Charlotte, Dr. Linda Stevens of Clayton, Mary Lou Norman of Burlington, Jackie Revill of Raleigh and Kathy Speed of Henderson; four sisters, Madeline Yancey of Danville, Va., Bet Laster and Sybil Woodruff, both of Shreveport, La., and Imogene Currin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Olan Eakes of South Boston, Va., and Bob Eakes of Warner Robbins, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Oxford Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. or to Mt. Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 2187 Mt. Creek Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Charles H. Dees
OXFORD -- Charles H. Dees, 63, of 416 Granville St., died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the Granville Medical Center.
He was the son of Arthur R. Dees Sr. and Leora Hicks Dees.
Surviving is one brother, Arthur Dees Jr. of Washington, D.C.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Betts & Son Chapel by the Revs. Darryl Wiggins, Lacy Joyner and Charlotte Cooper. Burial will follow in the Huntsville Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors 30 minutes prior to the services at the funeral home.

Willie R.G. Downey
OXFORD -- Willie Ruth Burgess Downey, 49, of 312 Person St., died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at he residence. She was the daughter of the late Charles Burgess and Evelyn Thorpe Burgess.
She was a graduate of South Granville High School and an employee of Wilton Elementary School. She was a member of Christian Faith Center in Creedmoor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Faith Center. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are her husband, Chester Downey; one son, Antwane Downey of the home; one daughter, Antrice Downey of the home; two sisters, Geraldine B. Thornton of Butner and Priscilla Burgess of Boston, Mass.; three brothers, Charles Burgess Jr., Anthony Burgess and Glenn Thomas Burgess, all of Creedmoor.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.
Justice Morgan
WARRENTON -- Justice Morgan, 75, of the Wise community, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church of Wise by the Rev. Preston Williams Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Sallie Jones of Norlina and Elnora Branch of Richmond, Va.; one son, Robert Branch of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Nora Long of Arlington, Va., Ruby and Bettie Morgan of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, John Morgan of Alexandria, Va.

Jason Wayne Seamster
CREEDMOOR -- Jason Wayne Seamster, age 53, a resident of 2128 E. Lyon Station Road, died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Duke Medical Center.
He was born in Vance County and was the son of the late Addie Seamster and Juanita Strange Seamster Buchanan. He attended the First Baptist Church in Creedmoor.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by one sister, Cheryl F. Seamster, of Creedmoor, and one brother, Addie B. “Mickey” Seamster, Jr., of Lillington; and one niece and one nephew.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be: Billy Johnson, James Morris, Lawrence Hilliard, William Weaver, Sr., Jake Roberson, and Tim Strange.

Lillian B.G. Smiley
WARRENTON -- Lillian Belle Gibson Smiley, 85, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late B.G. Gibson and Emma Davis Gibson.
She was a member of the North Warrenton Baptist Church where she was a former deaconess. She was preceded in death by her husband, B.P. Smiley, and her son, Arthur Smiley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at North Warrenton Baptist Church by the Revs. Tim Short and Rob Evans. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter Jane S. Griffin of Louisburg; sons, Ted Smiley of Warrenton and B.P. Smiley Jr. of Richmond; brother, William Gibson of Warrenton; sister, Mabel Cassidy of Huntsville, S.C.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Harvey Paynter, William Brannock, Bobby Wells, Ronnie Wilkerson, Carl Campbell, Ricky Young, Jack Wagley and James Champion. Honorary pallbearers will be Mac Adams, Charles Wagstaff, A.J. Ellington and and Alpheus Oakley.
Memorials may be made to the North Warrenton Baptist Church.

John S. Bullock Sr.
HENDERSON -- John Sidney Bullock Sr., 75, of 497 Warrenton Road died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.

John E. Edge
DURHAM -- John E. “Jack” Edge, 80, of Croasdaile Village died Monday evening in Duke University Medical Center.
Mr. Edge was born in Luton, England. He was employed with Maidenform Mfg. as a plant manager in Bayonne, N.J., San Juan, Puerto Rico, Edison, N.J., and Jacksonville, Fla., where he retired. Mr. Edge served as a Pilot in the British Royal Air Force during WWII, where he met his wife of 57 years, Eva, in Cairo, Egypt. Jack and Eva enjoyed traveling all over the world. He was also an avid gardener. Jack served as a volunteer with Guardian Ad liteum in Jacksonville, Fla., after retirement. He also received several awards for volunteering from Public Broadcasting Station WJCT in Jacksonville.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Harris Edge; one son, Peter Edge and wife, Pat, of Bahama; two sisters, Doris and Josie, both of England; two grandsons, Jonathan and Justin Edge.
A gathering of family and friends in the celebration of Jack’s life will be Thursday from 3 until 6 p.m. at the home of his son, 9808 Colt Dr., in Black Horse Run, Bahama.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Association, Eastern N.C. Chapter, 400 Oberlin Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27605.

HENDERSON -- Annie Mary Lee Thomas Sneed, 66, of Henderson died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Harrisburg, Pa.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Daniel Lee Sneed, 125 Boothe Ave.

Vera W. Westmoreland
GRIFFIN, Ga. -- Vera Wortham Westmoreland, 82, of Griffin died Monday, June 11, 2001, at the West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. She was a native of Henderson and the daughter of the late Claude Wortham and Annie Pleasants Wortham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.A. Westmoreland, in 1996. She was retired from the Thomaston Mills as a switchboard operator and was a member of Hanleiter United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Aubrey Westmoreland of LaGrange; two grandsons; sisters Elma Heath of Deep Run and Sallie Maggett and Elizabeth Harris, both of Cincinnati; and brothers Roland and Douglas Wortham, both of Henderson.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Oak Hill cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the graveside at 12:45 p.m. for the service.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hanleiter United Methodist Church, 732 West Broad St., Griffin, Ga., in memory of Mrs. Westmoreland.

James E. Malone
ST. LOUIS -- James Ellis Malone, 71, of St. Louis, formerly of Louisburg, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Missouri. He was the son of the late Charlie and Juanita Malone.
He was a retired employee of the U.S. government and was a member of Concord Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted at noon June 4 at Austin-Lane Mortuary in Missouri. Burial was held in the Laurel Hills cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Louisa Malone; one child, Jackie M. Flood; one granddaughter; two brothers, Fred Malone and Charlie Malone; four sisters, Margaret Ree Williams, Mary Evelyn Branch, Metrice Malone Blacknall and Lula Allen; and three stepdaughters, Ida Sims, Shirley Harris and Patricia Tyler.
Pallbearers were family and friends.
Local arrangements were by Garnes Funeral Services.

WARRENTON -- Francis Alston Woods, 58, of Temple Hills, Md., formerly of Warren County, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Maryland.

John S. Bullock Sr.
HENDERSON -- John Sidney Bullock Sr., 75, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was the son of Arthur and Rosetta Hester Bullock of Warren County.
At an early age, he became a member of Oak Level United Church of Christ and was a retired farmer. He was married to the late Nellie Mae Bullock and Mary Gregory Bullock.
Surviving are three sons, John S. Bullock Jr. and James A. Bullock, both of Henderson, and Calvin Bullock of Carteret, N.J.; nine daughters, Sandra Bullock of the home, Joyce Bullock, Rachael Bullock, Eula Bullock and Hattie Richardson, all of Henderson, Dorothy Terry of Middleburg, Rebecca Crews of Kittrell, Josephine Manning of Elizabeth, N.J., and Rosa Armstrong of Carteret; two sisters, Lucy Burton and Millie Ann Henderson, both of Elizabeth; one brother, Wally Bullock of Richmond, Va.; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Level United Church of Christ in Manson with the Rev. Leon White officiating, assisted by the Rev. William Brodie. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday and other times at 497 Warrenton Road.
Floral bearers will be Angela Sommerville, Phyllis Rainey, Margaret Clark, Christine Hawkins, Crystal Hawkins, Linda Faye Thorpe, Deborah Bullock and Mae Jordan. Pallbearers will be Claude Williams, Charles Strong, Vance Spruill, Michael Crews and Henry Clark.
The body can be viewed from noon Saturday until taken to the church Sunday.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Temple by the Bishop Johnny L. Alston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are six daughters, Beatrice Sneed, Essie Mae Sneed, Ruth Naimo Sneed and Patrice Ann Cooper, all of Harrisburg, Mary Lee Hargrove of Henderson and Priscilla Maria Sneed of Warrenton; three sons, David Lee Sneed and Daniel Lee Sneed, both of Henderson, and Wilbert Bernard Sneed of Fayetteville; three brothers, James Thomas of Richmond, Va., Samuel Clements of Washington, D.C., and William Thomas of Henderson; four sisters, Elizabeth Durham, Laura Terry, Lucille Brown and Chanda Clarke, all of Henderson; 22 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

NORLINA -- Gracie Young White, 80, of Norlina died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Thomas and Maggie Kimball Young. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. White.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann W. Powell of Norlina, and two brothers, James Young of Youngsville and Eugene Young of Warrenton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wise Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Yates. Interment will follow at Zion United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Francis A. Woods
WARRENTON -- Francis Alston Woods, 58, of Temple Hills, Md., formerly of Warren County, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Maryland.
She was a 1960 graduate of John R. Hawkins High School, attended Shaw University in Raleigh and was a licensed real estate broker. She also was a faithful member of Spring Green Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Spring Green Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. Dennis G. Lindsay, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Solita Woods of Baltimore; one sister, Agnes Savoy of Dorchester, Mass.; and two grandsons.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ray and Irene Spruill Kearney of Warrenton.
