Johanna L. Milam

WARRENTON -- Johanna L. Milam, 46, of the Connell Road community died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton by the Rev. Lawrence Harrison. Burial will follow in the Milam family cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are four sons, John Milam and Keith Milam, both of the home, and Randy Milam and Franklin Milam, both of Warrenton; two daughters, Erica Milam of Warrenton and Samantha Milam of the home; two grandchildren; her mother, Hannah Blake Milam of Queens, N.Y.; three sisters, Francis Jefferson and Candace Milam, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Felicia Bryant of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; and one brother, Jeremiah Milam of New Jersey.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until the hour of the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Hazel ‘McMaster’ Purdy

HENDERSON -- Hazel “McMaster” Purdy, 89, a Coraopolis resident for most of her life, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Henderson. She was a native of Sewickley, Pa., and the daughter of the late Joseph Rodd and Caroline Challis McMaster. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Cavitt Purdy.
She was a member of Greystone United Presbyterian Church and a retired schoolteacher.
Surviving are her daughter, Ruth H. Kozak of Oxford; her sister, Marjorie Helm of Mount Lebanon; her brother, Joe McMaster of Coraopolis; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coraopolis cemetery by Dr. Jeffrey Sterling.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1323 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219.
Local arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Emmett N. Roberts

HENDERSON -- Emmett Noah Roberts, 87, of 517 Birch Circle died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the son of the late Samuel Love and Mattie Ramsey Roberts.
He was an automotive front-end alignment specialist at various garages in Henderson for most of his life and retired from Rosemart Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Gospel Baptist Church. He was a member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 AF&AM.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Robert Greene Jr. Burial, with Masonic rites, will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel King Roberts; two daughters, Elsie R. Tolbert of South Hill, Va., and Juanita R. Davis of Henderson; and one grandchild.
Masons will serve as active pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Addie B. Seamster Jr.

RALEIGH -- Addie Batcher “Mickey” Seamster Jr., 57, of 1300 Western Blvd. died Thursday in Raleigh. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the
late Addie Batcher Seamster Sr. and Juanita Strange Seamster Buchanan.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Leon Gupton. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by one sister, Cheryl F. Seamster of Creedmoor.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Tim Christian, James Thompson, Craven Hough, Tim Strange and Maynard Pegram.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Grover L. Shearin

WARRENTON -- Grover Lee Shearin, 84, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Jesse Vance Shearin and Ellen Wemyss Shearin.
He was a retired farmer.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Hill cemetery in Littleton.
Surviving is one sister, Belle Bright of Warrenton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Lois R. Sadler

MACON -- Lois Rivers Sadler, 71, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
She was a retired seamstress for Carolina Sportswear in Warrenton, a member of Hebron United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Hebron United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Virginia S. Bengle of Macon; a son, Henry Limer Sadler Jr. of Greensboro; one brother, Franklin Rivers of Macon; and two grandchildren.
The family will be at the home in Macon.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mittie N. Spencer

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. -- Mrs. Mittie Norwood Spencer of 2804 Halifax Road, South Boston, Va., died Friday, July 20, 2001, at her home.
She was born in Vance Co., North Carolina, on November 16, 1908, and was 92 years old.
She was the daughter of Mr. John Alps Norwood and Mrs. Blanche Norwood and was married to the Rev. Lewis Page Spencer Sr.
Mrs. Mittie Norwood Spencer is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Isabel Bradley of South Boston; three grandchildren, Dr. Richard B. Bradley of Halifax, Mrs. Janet B. Darby of Midlothian and Miss Lynn Ellen Spencer of Henderson, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie N. Keeton of Townsville, N.C., and Mrs. Helen B. Norwood of Townsville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Lewis Spencer Sr., and her son, Lewis Spencer Jr.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mittie Norwood Spencer will be held Sunday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Lawrence, N.C., with the Rev. Noah Howard conducting the service. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family received friends at Powell Funeral Home Saturday from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Iris J. Taylor

OXFORD -- Iris Jeanette Taylor, 51, of 300 New College St. died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
She was a retired employee of IBM. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was director of the youth choir.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lacy Joyner. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are one son, Jason Taylor of White Plains, N.Y.; her mother, Avery Taylor of Oxford; her father, Leroy Robinson of Morristown, N.J.; one sister, Odious Taylor of Oxford; and one brother, Wayne Hammie of Oxford.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home.

Allen L. Autrey

CREEDMOOR -- Allen L. “Coon” Autrey, 43, of 2595 Horseshoe Road, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at his home. He was a Granville County native and the son of Charles B. Autrey and the late Georgia Lyons Autrey.
He was a member of the Church of God in Creedmoor and was engaged in the logging business prior to his illness.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Don Wadford. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are two daughters, Ashley Potts of Durham, Tabitha Autrey of Creedmoor; a son, Christopher Autrey of Creedmoor; seven sisters, Barbara Manriguez of Henderson, Doris Autrey and Donna Snead, both of Oxford, Linda Verdin of Wilton, Lisa Vargas of Spring Hope, Teresa Caberra and Georgianna Autrey, both of Franklinton; and a brother, Freddie Autrey of Creedmoor. A brother, Charles E. Autrey preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Willie J. Currin

HENDERSON -- Willie Jackson Currin, age 79, a resident of 100 Willie Currin Road, died Monday morning at his home.
He was a native of Warren County, the son of the late Willie Lee and Annie Jackson Currin, and the widower of Cynthia Glover Currin. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion. He was a retired highway patrolman and served on the Advisory Board of Retired Highway Patrolmen, and was retired from Vance County Social Services. He was a member of the Watkins Volunteer Fire Department and the Henderson Kiwanis Club, and was a member of the former Golden K of Kiwanis, of which he served as president.
He was a member of the Harris Chapel United Methodist Church where he was Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Pastor Parrish Committee, a member of the Board Of Trustees, and was a Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Thurman Horney, the Rev. James Lancaster and the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in the Harris Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
He is survived by one son, William “Billy” Currin and wife Kathy of Henderson; one grandson, Will Currin; one sister, Dorothy C. Terrell of Louisburg; one brother, Henry Currin of Epsom; and a special friend, Jessie Ruth Stegall.
Serving as active pallbearers will be members of the North Carolina Highway Patrol Honor Guard. Serving as honorary pall bearers will be all law enforcement personnel, members of the American Legion, and members of the Watkins Volunteer Fire Department.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 P. M. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Billy and Kathy Currin at 144 Willie Currin Road.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Watkins Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Frank T. Wrenn, Jr., 296 Wrenn Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565, or to the Harris Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Lawrence Brame, 280 Kelly Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Sidney M. Elliott

HENDERSON -- Sidney Macon “Red” Elliott, 75, of 1001 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, in the Williamsboro community, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late John C. and Carrie Wilkerson Elliott.
He was a retired mechanic with the former International Harvestor Tractor and Equipment Company of Henderson. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of Celebration Church in Oxford.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Island Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. William Bell.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Williams Elliott; and four sisters, Mattie Lou E. Petro of Squaw Valley, Calif., Frances E. Pouch of Farmington, Mich., Cynthia E. Pittman of Bryant, Texas, and Myrtle E. Shea of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends at her home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Neysa F. Ezelle

HENDERSON -- Neysa Fleming Ezelle, of 1556 Lynne Ave., Henderson, died Saturday, July 21, 2001. She was a native of Roanoke County, Va., and the daughter of the late Charles C. and Loffie Elizabeth Sanders Fleming. She was the widow of Wallace Carlyle Ezelle.
She was a homemaker and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Charles Cook. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Lake View cemetery in Victoria, Va.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna E. LeNeave of Vass; a son, Richard C. “Dick” Ezelle of Martinsville, Va.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Swanson Dodd, Gerald Fuller, John Headman, John Falkner, Harry Hartsell, John Rainey, Ted Bowen and Joe Briggs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, General Fund, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Lela J. Lanier

CREEDMOOR -- Lela Jackson Lanier, 93, of Northside Road, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Joe and Nannie Allen Jackson. She was the widow of Vernon Lanier.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was retired from Murdoch Center.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Creedmoor cemetery by the Rev. Willis Herman.
Surviving is one daughter, Mary Anne Roberts of Creedmoor.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Dr. Jasper N. Needham Jr.

WILMINGTON -- Dr. Jasper Norwood Needham, Jr., age 76, a resident of 2744 S. 17th St., and a former resident of Brookrun Road, Henderson, died Sunday morning at Manor House Of Wilmington.
He was born in Lakeland, Florida, and was the son of Jasper Norwood Needham, Sr. of Greensboro, N.C. and the late Virginia Newsome Needham. In 1939 he received the Eagle Scout Award, and was a 1942 graduate of New Hanover High School in Wilmington.
He graduated from Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1947, and opened a veterinary hospital in Wilmington in 1948. In 1956 he moved to Henderson and was a former partner in West Hills Veterinary Centre, and later opened Companion Hospital.
He moved to Hatteras in 1972 and retired from Veterinary Medicine in 1989. He was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, and a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Henderson, and was a member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 AF&AM.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Sunset Gardens in Henderson by the Rev. Charles M. Cook.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his step-mother, Mary Needham, of Greensboro; his wife, Edith Mustian Needham, of Wilmington; one daughter, Jacquelyn A. Needham of Wilmington; one son, Robert N. Needham and wife Carolyn of Winnabow, N.C.; one step-son, Dr. Charles F. Kirkland, Sr. and wife Donna of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Dr. Thomas C. Needham and wife Peggy of Wilmington, N.C.; and four grandchildren, R.J. Needham, Rachel Needham, Kimberly Stephenson, and Charles Kirkland, Jr.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 2 until 2:45 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Masonic and Eastern Star Home, 700 S. Holden Rd., Greensboro, N.C. 27407.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mildred ‘Mickey’
Long Vann Opie

HAMLET -- Mildred “Mickey” Long Vann Opie, of 607 McDonald Ave., Hamlet, died Saturday, July 21, 2001 at First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham.
Born December 5, 1916 in Hamlet, she was the daughter of the late Henry Branch and Virginia Pillow Long. Mrs. Opie was a retired clerk for the Carolina Power and Light Co., the “Tall Lady” at CP&L for 25 years. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and the First United Methodist Church of Hamlet, where she served as secretary of the United Methodist Women, and was co-leader of Circle No. 2 of the First United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Hamlet Hospital Auxiliary; she was Treasurer of Arms of the CP&L Retirees Group; Treasurer of the Luncheon Bridge Club; Past President of the Athenian Book Club; and she was a Bag Lady at Johnny Greene’s Seaboard Festival Revues.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church of Hamlet with Rev. Milford Oxendine, Rev. Larry Higgins and Rev. Lada Hardwick officiating. Burial followed in the Mary Love cemetery. Friends called Sunday evening from 7 to 9 at Harrington Funeral Home.
Mrs. Opie was preceded in death by her husband, James Gordon Opie. She is survived by two daughters, Ginger Baker of Henderson and Rita Bland and husband, Norman, of Rockingham; one son, Robin Vann and wife, Kay, of Boonville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Thomas Baker and wife, Nancy, Stan Baker and wife, Donna, Paige H. Bailey and husband, Mike, Ryan Vann, Benjamin Vann and Mary Todd Vann; and six great-grandchildren, Christopher Baker, Daniel Baker, Cameron Baker, Sarah Baker, Adam Bailey and Mason Bailey.
Memorials can be made to the Hamlet Opera House, P.O. Box 1026, Hamlet, N.C., Railroad Museum, P.O. Box 1583, Hamlet, N.C., or Seaboard Station Restoration, P.O. Box 1398, Hamlet, N.C.
Harrington Funeral Home served the family.

Eleanor L. Reilly

WARRENTON -- Eleanor Louise Reilly, 79, of Henderson, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Harvey Jefferson Anderson and Ida Brown Anderson.
The family will meet with friends at the Henderson home of her daughter, Robin R. Dixon.
Arrangements will be announced later by Brown’s Funeral Services Inc. of Warrenton.
