Mingo Brodie Jr.

HENDERSON -- Mingo Brodie Jr., 78, of 756 Hillside Ave. died Friday, July 27, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Durham. He was a native of Henderson and the son of the late Mingo Brodie Sr. and Geneva Williams Brodie.
He attended the former Central Colored Grade School and the former Mary Potter School of Shoe Repair.
He worked at the former Kerner’s Drug Store, at the former Harry Bakers Pawn Shop as a handyman in carpentry, and doing lawn work throughout the Henderson area.
As a member of the U.S. Army, he served from 1942 until 1946, and as a longshoreman, he served in Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Hiroshima, Guam, Nagasaki and the South Pacific. While in the service he received several medals. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 2417.
As a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and for other volunteer work, he was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award.
He was a former member of Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church and later joined Shiloh Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the pastor, Rev. Joseph L. Ratliff, assisted by the Revs. Spotwood Burwell, Feraldine Simmons and Jimmie L. Johnson. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
The body may be viewed at Williams Funeral Home from 10 a.m. today until 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Surviving are one daughter, the Rev. Alice B. Richardson of Henderson; two sons, Lewis W. Brodie and the Rev. William C. Brodie, both of Henderson; two sisters, Alice B. McKnight of Henderson and Jennie V. Vereen of the Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, Joseph C. Brodie Sr. of Plymouth; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of the Rev. William Brodie, 420 John St., and the Rev. Alice Richardson, Apartment 24, Greenacres.
Arrangements are by Williams Funeral Home.

Ella P. Burgans

OXFORD -- Ella Palmer Burgans, 83, of 226 W. College St. died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late John Palmer and Mattie Meadow Palmer.
She attended Granville County Schools.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at Betts & Son Chapel by the Rev. Adolphus Smith. Burial will follow in the Meadowview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Eva S. Gooch

HENDERSON -- Eva Speed Gooch, 81, a resident of Oxford Manor, formerly of 29 Cheatham Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Oxford Manor.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

William B. Ellington Sr.

HENDERSON -- William Byron Ellington Sr., 78, of Rt. 1 Box 78 A, Manson, N.C., in the Drewry community, died Thursday, August 2, 2001, in Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Born in Warren County, he was the son of the late James Thomas Ellington Sr. and Annie Katherine Blackburn Ellington. He was a retired farmer and a lifelong member of Mount Auburn United Church of Christ, where he served for more than fifty years on the Board of Deacons, was a former Sunday School teacher and former Sunday School superintendent. Mr. Ellington was a charter member of the Drewry Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the North Carolina Cattleman’s Association and the Sons of The Confederacy, and was a former member of the Warren County Board of Elections. He was a member of the Francis S. Packard Masonic Lodge #630 in Norlina, the Warren County Shrine Club and the Amran Temple.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Auburn United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Dera Adair. Burial, with Masonic Rites, will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ella Adcock Ellington; five daughters, Melony Ellington of the home, Betsy Ellington, Judy E. Stainback and husband Duke, Jan E. Reese and husband Greg, all of Drewry, and Kay E. Creech and husband Keith of Henderson; a son, William B. “Bill” Ellington Jr. and wife Cheryl of Drewry; two sisters, Lucille E. McManaway of Raleigh and Eleanor E. Willard and husband John of Manassas Park, Virginia; two brothers, George W. Ellington of Manson and Buxton G. Ellington and wife Anne of Raleigh; nine grandchildren, Heather Ellington-Peele and husband Jamie, Troy E. Stainback and wife Hope, G. Blaine Reese, Byron D. Stainback, Jamie Reese, Lee Stainback, Gabriel Ellington, William Stamey and Jacob Reese; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Stainback and Chandler Stainback. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebekah E. Small and Katherine E. Frazier, and a brother, James Thomas Ellington Jr.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Members of the Francis S. Packard Masonic Lodge #630 will serve as active pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mount Auburn United Church of Christ, c/o Virginia Hall, Rt. 1 Box 146, Manson, N.C. 27553.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Eva S. Gooch

HENDERSON -- Eva Speed Gooch, 81, a resident of Oxford Manor, formerly of 29 Cheatham Lane, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Oxford Manor. She was the daughter of the late Henry Speed and Hettie Vann Speed.
She was a member of Mount Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, Willing Workers Club and kitchen committee and one of the original members of the Mount Moriah Spiritualettes. She was a charter member of the Pride of Honor Temple No. 1079 of I.B.P.O. Elks of the World and served as its first secretary. She was a member of the Progressive Council No. 5, North Carolina past state president, Cam Smith Fez Club, Purple Cross Nurses Unit and a life member of the Grand Lodge. She also held the positions of door keeper, chaplain, escort and financial secretary.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. Melvin Ballard. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one brother, James Herbert Speed of Oxford; five foster children, Brenda Speed Thornton of Oxford, James H. Speed Jr. and Chester V. Speed, both of Raleigh, Ruth Wheless of Louisburg, and Sarah A. Bethune of Raleigh.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Sara P.M. Haynes

KURE BEACH -- Sara Palmer Moore Haynes, 82, died July 27, 2001, in Pinehurst.
Memorial services were conducted at 4 p.m. July 29 at Christ United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. The Rev. Raegan May officiated.
Surviving are a daughter, Sara Palmer Armentrout of Portsmouth, Va.; two sons, William Branch Haynes of Chapel Hill and Christopher Carr Haynes of Hampton, Va.; one brother, James Carr Moore Jr. of Whispering Pines; two sisters, Nancy McIlwaine Mills of Hampton, Va., and Lucy Sterling Jones of Henderson; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Powell Funeral Home of Southern Pines.

Annie H.B. Hunter

HENDERSON -- Annie Hyman Bunn Hunter, 80, of 325 Charles St., Henderson, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at her home.
Arrangements will be announced by Flowers Funeral Home.

Jean C. Blackmon

OXFORD -- Jean Campbell Blackmon, 55, of 6083 Cindy Lane died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Coley and Willie Belle Boyd Campbell.
She was a member of Stovall Baptist Church and was medically retired as a nurse.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Stovall Memorial cemetery by the Rev. Sam Brewer.
Surviving are a son, W. Earl Blackmon III of Oxford, and two brothers, Bobby Campbell of Oxford and Tommy Campbell of Raleigh.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Nathaniel Boyd

WARRENTON -- Nathaniel Boyd, 84, of Macon died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. He was the son of the late John and Liza Peete Boyd.
At an early age, he joined the Macon Second Baptist Church.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II on May 29, 1942. While in the Army, he received numerous citations and medals, including the Eamet Campaign Ribbon with five bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68 and the Victory Medal. He returned from Germany on Dec. 9, 1945, after receiving an honorable discharge.
He resided in Richmond, Va., until moving back to Macon in the late 1970s. Upon returning home, he became active in church, serving as a member and singing on the choir until his health began to fail.
He was preceded in death by his 12 siblings.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton. The Rev. Lawrence Harrison will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are nine nieces and three nephews.
The body will lie in state at Boyd’s Funeral Services until the hour of services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Lou Ella Dickerson

Lou Ella Dickerson, age 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 at the Senior Citizens Home in Vance County.
She was born to Sidney and Nora Dickerson of Vance County on Jan. 20, 1917. She lived most of her adult life in Durham and retired from the American Tobacco Company.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Magdalene Brown, Elsie Dickerson and Grace Daniel, and one brother, George Dickerson.
Survivors include sisters Annie Mae Tillotson of Kernersville, Hazel Rhodes and Janet Harper of Graham, Blanche Stainback of Henderson, and two brothers, Troy Dickerson of Henderson and Douglas Dickerson of Hillsborough.
Ms. Dickerson donated her body to medical research.
The family would like to thank all friends and relatives and offer a special acknowledgement for the dedicated love and support of Evelyn Pittman Dickerson.

Bettie D. Drew

HENDERSON -- Bettie Davis Drew, 96, a former resident of 930 Bridges St., died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Britthaven of Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services.

Melvin L. Eaton

HENDERSON -- Melvin Lorenzo Eaton, 53, of 111 First Ave. died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Willie and Pattie Beatric Hargrove Eaton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Oak Level United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Melvin Lamont Eaton of the home and Brad Eaton of Henderson; six sisters, Doris Allen of Richmond, Va., Mable Ingram, Dorothy Lambert and Carrie Wimbush, all of Henderson, Catherine Hargrove of Middleburg and Alice Hargrove of Warrenton; two foster sisters, Carolyn Pettaway and Marie Henderson, both of Henderson; and a foster brother, Larry Eaton of Middleburg.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Viewing will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Services.

Lillie Harris

HENDERSON -- Lillie Harris of 1827 Clearview St., Henderson, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

James A. Jones

KENANVILLE -- James Arthur Jones, stepfather of the Rev. Richard Batts of Youngsville, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Goldsboro.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Richard M. Aycock
HENDERSON -- Richard Macon Aycock, 87, of 1640 Oakdale Circle, Henderson, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
He was the owner and operator of the former Aycock Shoe Store in Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home.
Arrangements will be announced by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Mary E.B. Chastain

SALEM, Ind. -- Mary Elizabeth Brown Chastain died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001.
She is survived by a son, James F. Chastain, owner of Burkhart Carolina in Henderson.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m.
Arrangements are by Weathers Funeral Home of Salem.

Bettie D. Drew

HENDERSON -- Bettie Davis Drew, 96, formerly of 930 Bridges St., died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Britthaven of Henderson.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Blacknall cemetery by the Rev. John Miles.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Lillie R. Harris

HENDERSON -- Mrs. Lillie Robertson Harris, age 69, died Thursday, August 2, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was born in Warren County to the late Willie Turner Robertson and Anna Murphy Robertson. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church and was a retired clerk at Jerry’s Thrift Shop.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Glen Harris; three daughters, Susan H. Wheeler of Henderson, N.C., Shelby H. Woolard of Louisburg, N.C., and Deborah H. Moss of Henderson, N.C.; and one son, Steven Harris of Henderson, N.C.; one sister, Ada Braswell of Raleigh, N.C.; and one brother, Willie G. Robertson of Durham, N.C.; three grandchildren, Rebecca Moss, Brandon Wheeler and Walter Moss; three step-grandchildren, Toby Woolard, Tony Williamson and Patsy Williamson; three great-grandchildren, April Casstevens, Ashley Casstevens and Shannon Casstevens; two step-great-grandchildren, Zachary Williamson and Jenna Hicks.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home, Warrenton, N.C. A visitation will be held on Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery in Arcola, N.C.

Veronica O. Humphrey

HENDERSON -- Veronica Owens Humphrey, 50, of Georgetown, S.C., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Ida Belle Cooper Williams and the late William Owens.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday in the Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services Chapel by the Rev. Tony Gregory. The family will meet with friends from 6 to 7 p.m., immediately before the service. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Michael Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Stovall.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Wayne Humphrey; a son, Zachary Humphrey; a daughter, Nicole Humphrey; and two grandchildren.
The body will be on view beginning at 10 a.m. Monday.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

Annie H.B. Hunter

HENDERSON -- Annie Hyman Bunn Hunter, 80, of 325 Charles St. died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at her home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Arthur Alexander and Mary Lamb Bunn. She was the widow of Dr. Thomas McGregor Hunter.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Holy Innocents. She was a gifted vocalist who shared her talent and love of music with numerous churches and organizations in Henderson for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Holy Innocents by the Rev. Ralph Macey. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Hunter Judge of Harrisonburg, Va., and Nancy Hyman Hunter of Worcester, Mass.; a son, Thomas M. Hunter of Raleigh; a sister, Catherine Bunn McDowell of Dundee, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Curtis Judge III, Curtis Judge IV, David Judge, Robert Harrison, Edwin Harrison, Jimmy Harrison, Joe Shaheen and John McDowell Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Sam Fox, Wallace Cawthorne, Dr. Randolf Mills, Dr. Franklin Mills, Bennett Perry and J. Wayne Pearce.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, 434 Fayetteville Street Mall, 2 Hanover Drive, Suite 1600, Raleigh, N.C. 27601-1764; or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265-0309.

Maudie M. Adcock

HENDERSON -- Maudie Matthews Adcock, 80, of 820 Coble Blvd., Apt. G, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late George L. and Rosa Belle Wilkins Matthews.
She was a member of Bullock Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Sam Brewer. Burial will follow in Royster cemetery in Bullock.
Surviving are three daughters, Doris A. Cooper, Priscilla A. Tingen and Rosemary A. Elliott, all of Henderson; one son, Howard “Butch” Adcock of Bullock; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Leonard Matthews.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Sam and Doris Cooper, 1542 Glover St., Henderson.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.
