Lovelace Hinton Jr.

WARRENTON -- Lovelace “Fuzzy” Hinton Jr., 52, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Locust Grove Baptist Church in Wise. The Rev. James Johnson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Jiggetts Hinton; six sons, Trenton Gill of Georgia, Keith Barnes of Raleigh, Andre Spruill and CarMichael, both of California, Corey Twitty of Henderson, and Lovelace Edwards of Warrenton; five daughters, Latonya Hinton of California and Felicia Solomon, Crystal Hinton, Ashley Hinton and Michelle Hinton, all of Warrenton; two stepdaughters; 26 grandchildren; his mother, Sarah B. Hinton of Wise; two brothers, Ivory Hinton of Richmond, Va., and Dennis Hinton of Wise; and two sisters, Barbara Hinton of Soul City and Effie G. Hinton of Maryland.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Anna J. Ball

HENDERSON -- Anna Jeanette Ball, 71, of 228 Yowland Drive died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Guardian Care. She was a native of New York.
She was a graduate of Howard University and received a master’s degree from New York University. She retired from the New York school system, where she was a special education and early education teacher. She was the founder of a tutorial program and private school at Allen A.M.E. Church in Queens, N.Y. After retirement, she relocated to Henderson, where she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was a volunteer at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ratliff. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Marsha Jean Elliott of Queens and Elisia Ann Smith of Durham; one son, Mark Ellison Ball of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Eleanor Shelton of Baltimore and Florence Thomas and Lillian Miller, both of Henderson; one brother, Anderson Lincoln Bullock of Queens; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Ruth A. Barker

OXFORD -- Ruth Allgood Barker, 63, of 6648 Huntsboro Road died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at her residence. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Willie and Edna Mae Boyd Allgood.
She was employed with Century 21 Hancock Properties as a licensed real estate agent. She was a member of Delrayno Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John Yount. Burial will follow in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Laurie B. Barker; one daughter, Sherri Barker of Oxford; one sister, Mary Ann A. Cash of Oxford; one brother, Fred T. Barker of Whiteville; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Leslie Marie Barker, and one son, David L. Barker.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3500 Westgate Drive, Suite 201, Durham, N.C. 27707.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

John C. Critcher

OXFORD -- John C. Critcher, 94, of 210 Tranquil Drive died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, after a lengthy illness. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Robert T. and Cornelia O’Brian Critcher.
He was an active member of Oxford Baptist Church and had been a dedicated member of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Dale Pitts Critcher; one son, John C. Critcher Jr. of Oxford; two grandchildren; one stepson, Drew Sumrell of Boone; and one stepdaughter, Peggy Sumrell Allen of Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by Dr. Steven Bolton. Burial will follow in Enon Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors one hour before the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. 27565, or to Triangle Hospice, 1804 MLK Jr. Parkway, No. 112, Durham, N.C. 27707.

Ruth Robinson Jeffries

HENDERSON -- Ruth Robinson Jeffries was called home to be with her Lord on Thursday, August 8, 2001. She was a native of Vance County and daughter of the late Eddie and Blanche Robinson. She was the widow of Jeff Jeffries of Raleigh. She was retired from Durham Life Insurance Company, where she was employed for 30 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mitchell’s Funeral Home at 600 St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh.
She is survived by two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two nieces, Beth Crowder of Henderson and Debbie Brewer of Middleburg; and two nephews, Calvin Johnston of Henderson and Phil Johnston of Atlanta, Ga.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 Monday night at Mitchell’s Funeral Home.

Elsie D. King

HENDERSON -- Elsie Davis King, 76, of 320 Charles St. died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg. She was a Wake County native and the daughter of the late Luther and Frances Eliza Hight Davis.
She was a homemaker.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Aubrey Florence.
Surviving are her husband, Johnnie Monroe King; three daughters, Brenda Lou King of Phoenix and Shirley Mae K. Mulchi and Betty K. Parker, both of Henderson; two sons, Bobby King and Jones Arthur “Woody” King, both of Henderson; a sister, Pearl D. Walls of Raleigh; a brother, John Davis of Raleigh; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Bobby and Betty Parker, 130 Tarheel Lane, Henderson.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Mabel C.B. Meredith

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Mabel Cheek Benson Meredith, 89, of 103 Linden Avenue, Lynchburg, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2001. Mabel, a daughter of the late William Alexander and Elizabeth Cheek Benson, was born on March 8, 1912, in Warren County, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Graham Evans Meredith, and her sisters Margie B. Aycock, Hazel B. Kidd and Kathleen B. Coleman.
Mabel, one of eight children, was raised on rural North Carolina tenant farms, where she developed her lifelong love of the earth. Upon graduation from John Graham High School, she left the farm life for Petersburg, Virginia, to pursue a career in nursing. It was in Petersburg General Hospital where she met a patient named Graham, whom she married on October 17, 1936. Upon her marriage, she left her nursing career and devoted the remainder of her life as a homemaker, raising and loving her family.
Mabel was an avid gardener whose home was always filled with her flowers and produce from her vegetable garden. She was appreciated for her wonderful “family” style cooking, wasting nothing. Especially memorable were her old-fashioned Sunday dinners faithfully prepared every Sunday. Her frugal nature also led her in her later years to become a conscientious “recycler” before it was fashionable. In addition, Mabel was an accomplished seamstress and a voracious reader.
For nearly 60 years she was a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesleyan Adult Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women and the Helping Hands Circle. She was also a member of the Lynchburg Suburban Woman’s Club.
Mabel is survived by her three children, Cowles Aldwin Meredith and his wife, Dee, of Lynchburg; Graham Alan Meredith and his wife, Sissy, of Marion, South Carolina; and Mary Kay Meredith McCrea and her husband, Cliff, of Lynchburg. She has five grandchildren: Catherine Delong Meredith of New York City, James Evans Meredith and John Alan Meredith of Northfield, Minnesota, Meredith Benson McCrea and Katherine Hunter McCrea of Lynchburg; and two step-grandchildren, Wilburn Kirby Jordan IV and Jason Earl Jordan of Marion, South Carolina. Mabel is also survived by her sisters Frances B. Aycock and Patsy B. Choplin of Elberon, North Carolina, and her brothers, William A. Benson of Warrenton, North Carolina, and Robert N. Benson of Martinez, Georgia, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, conducted by the Reverend Joseph Carson, will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, following a private interment. The family will greet friends and family in the narthex of the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or the Potato Project at the Society of Saint Andrew.

WARRENTON -- Sam Russell, 92, of the Russell Union community died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Lizzie B. Perry Taylor

HENDERSON -- Lizzie B. Perry Taylor, 93, of 1879 S. Chavis Road, Kittrell, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Wiley and Lizzie Crudup Perry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurston “Zeb” Taylor, and a son, Thurston C. Taylor.
She was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Kittrell, where funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today by the Rev. Jimmie Whitehurst.
Pallbearers will be grandsons. Floral bearers will be granddaughters.
Surviving are 10 children, Lougene Taylor of the home, Robert Taylor, Marie Mitchell, Jordan Taylor, Jessie Taylor, Essie LaRose and William Taylor, all of Kittrell, Mary Terry of Middleburg, and Selma Holmes and James Taylor, both of New York; one sister, Leora P. Malone of Kittrell; 37 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at the residence.

Dan E. Woody

OXFORD -- Dan Edward Woody, 66, of 4584 Fairport Road, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001. He was a Johnston County native and the son of the late John Tyree and Mildred Stephenson Woody.
He was a member of Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church, serving as deacon, a retired farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served on the board of directors of Wake Electric and on the board of directors of the Granville County Farm Bureau.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday at Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Futrell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Sue Green Woody; his daughters, Kaye Raynor of Oxford, Susan Lewis of Fort Polk, La., and Stacy Parrott of Oxford; his brother, Ben T. Woody of Oxford; and six grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church, 4572 Antioch Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Etta V.F. Johnson

OXFORD -- Etta Van Frazier Johnson, 84, of 7476 Eakes Road died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Elijah Gus and Myrtle Parham Frazier.
She was a member of Mount Creek Baptist Church and was retired from Westinghouse Inc. in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Creek Baptist Church by Dr. Delos Miller and the Rev. Neil Woodlief. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Davis S. Johnson; two daughters, Barbara H. Adcock of Oxford and Emily H. Bass of Youngsville; two sons, Charles T. Hutson of Oxford and William T. Hutson of Hillsborough; one stepdaughter, Lila Sykes of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two stepsons, D.S. Johnson Jr. of Durham and Richard “Dickie” Johnson of Charlotte; four sisters, Elizabeth Woodlief, Essie Mae Hobgood, Pauline Blackwell and Cleo Shephard, all of Oxford; one brother, Howard Frazier of Oxford; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Mount Creek Building Fund, c/o Michael Currin, 4072 Squire Lane, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Ronald E. Jones

HENDERSON -- Ronald Earl “Ronnie” Jones, 56, of 2296 Woodland Road died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Linda P. Lassiter

HENDERSON -- Linda Powell Lassiter, 52, of 1405 Old Epsom Road died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Roy Thomas and Annie Pendergrass Powell. She was the widow of Ronald Lee Lassiter Sr.
She was a former employee of the Nunnery Freeman Barbecue Restaurant and most recently worked for Gary’s Barbecue Restaurant. She was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Blessed Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Donald Perkinson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are three sons, Anthony Lassiter and Ronald Lassiter Jr., both of Kittrell, and Kevin Lassiter of Henderson; two sisters, Brenda Jackson and Ann Manning, both of Henderson; a brother, Jerry Powell Sr. of Henderson; and three grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Furman and Brenda Jackson, 1405 Old Epsom Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Kevin Lassiter, Furman Jackson Jr., Thomas Jackson, Jerry Powell Jr., Harold Hunt and Thomas Rooker.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Annie P. Lewis

BUTNER -- Annie P. Lewis, 76, of 600 B St., Apartment B5, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
She was a retired employee of Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Screen of Woodland Hills, Calif.; one sister, Hazel Paige of Springfield, Mass.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Floyd E. Manning

HENDERSON -- Floyd Edward Manning, 52, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, in Newport News, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his father, John Lee Manning, 700 Woodsworth Road.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Susie H. Norwood

CREEDMOOR -- Susie Hornbuckle Norwood, 88, of 302 Wilton Ave. died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Rose Minor Healthcare Center in Durham. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late John Henry and Georgia Alice Peak Adcock. Her first husband, Jim Hornbuckle, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Creedmoor Church of God and was retired from John Umstead Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Revs. Don Wadford, Glenn Smith and Willis Herman. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Lawrence R. Norwood; three daughters, Lodemia H. Morris of Creedmoor, Rose H. Owle of Sanford and Frances Hornbuckle of Creedmoor; a son, James S. Hornbuckle Jr. of Rougemont; a stepson, Stewart Norwood of Butner; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice H. Morris; a son, John Henry Hornbuckle; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home.

Lillie B. Seward

WARRENTON -- Lillie Bullock Seward, 62, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Oak Level United Church of Christ in Manson by the Rev. Leon White, pastor. Burial will follow in the St. Delight Holiness Church cemetery in Manson.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Carl Seward; six children, Jacqueline Cozart of Fort Hood, Texas, Brenda Holmes of Henderson, Joseph B. Seward of Stafford, Va., Curtis L. Seward of Manson, Ernest W. Seward of Pensacola, Fla., and Eric W. Seward of Henderson; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Lucy Daniels of San Diego; three brothers, Robert and George Bullock, both of Manson, and Joseph Bullock of Chase City, Va.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

John M. Stainback

EDINBURG, Va. -- John Marvin Stainback, 73, of 60 Hamburg Road, Edinburg, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Winchester Medical Center. He was a native of Raleigh and the son of the late John Marvin and Dollie Neal Stainback.
He was employed by the Washington Metro, retiring after 25 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of the Mount Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 103 A.F. & A.M., a 32nd-degree KCCH of Alexandria Scottish Rite, a member of KENA Shrine Temple and the Shenandoah Royal Arch Masons Chapter 17 in Virginia and Luray Commandry No. 19, and a member of the Shenandoah Valley Scottish Rite Club and served as the district deputy grand master of Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Mount Jackson Lions Club.
He married Helen Grace Stainback on Nov. 9, 1947, in Henderson.
Surviving are his son, John P. Stainback of Malvern, Pa., and a sister, Bobbie Lou Miller of Youngsville.
Memorial services with Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at United Methodist Church of Mount Jackson by the Mount Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 103.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or the Masonic Lodge No. 103 of Mount Jackson, c/o Building Fund, Mount Jackson, Va.
Arrangements are by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, in Winchester, Va.

William Lee White

William Lee White, 69, of 304 Regional Water Lane in Henderson, died Sunday night, Aug. 12, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill.
He was born April 18, 1932, in Franklin County to Bob and Clara White. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. White was a retired Henderson service station owner and auto mechanic.
In October 1961, he married Irene M. Mangum, who survives at the home.
Additional survivors include: one daughter, Pat Hodge of Henderson; one stepson, Milton Mangum of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church of Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to the Carey Baptist Church Youth Fund.
