Ronald E. Jones

HENDERSON -- Ronald Earl “Ronnie” Jones, age 56, a resident of 2296 Woodland Road, died Monday, August 13, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was native of Denton, Texas, and was the son of Emory Jean Wilson Jones of Denton, Texas, and the late Edwin Earl Jones. He was a retired Regional Manager for Yellow Freight Systems, where he worked for 23 years, and was a member of the Denton Downtown Bible Class.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ruth Hight Jones of the home; three sons, Ronald Earl “Ron” Jones Jr. of Dallas, Texas, Gaither Wilson Jones and Hayden Edwin Jones, both of Denton, Texas; one brother, Wilson Ray Jones and wife Jane of Ocala, Florida; his maternal grandmother, Fannie Mae Wilson of Denton, Texas; and one granddaughter.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Benny Finch, Rusty Crocker, Henry Strause, John Wester, Donald Matthews, Eddie Ellington, Ed Copeland, John McBride, Felix Simmons, R.G. Young Jr., C.G. Williams, Charles W. Finch and Dr. Robert G. Currin.
The family will receive friends at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vance Co. Rescue Squad, 1735 Maynard St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Luvennia Perry

KITTRELL -- Luvennia Perry, 69, of 229 Person-Sneed Road died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church of Kittrell by the Rev. Jimmie Whitehurst. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Cleveland Perry; a son, Willie Perry of Kittrell; three sisters, Mary Ann Dunston, Bettie Terrell of Kittrell and Angelina Alston of Franklinton; five brothers, D.V. Person, J.V. Person, Mack Person of Kittrell, and James Person and John Person, both of Louisburg.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Nancy J.H. Riggsbee

CHARLOTTE -- Nancy Jean Hight Riggsbee, 71, of Charlotte died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Brighton Gardens. She was a native of Henderson and the daughter of the late Blaney and Mary Hight.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn East cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Riggsbee Jr.; a son, Joseph A. Riggsbee III of Clemmons; two daughters, Mozette R. Covington of Charlotte and Mary Jean R. Nelson of Greensboro; a brother, Robert Stubbs Hight; a sister, Ann Hight Brafford of Henderson; and six grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home of Indian Trail.

Morgan F. Tart

OXFORD -- Morgan Frances Tart, infant daughter of Mark and Tracy Oakes Tart, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, in North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Madison Tart and Makayla Tart; a maternal grandmother, Mildred B. Oakes of Oxford; a maternal great-grandmother, Frances B. Brooks of Oxford; and two paternal great-grandparents, Marvin and Rachel Tart of Mamers.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Lemar Wheeler.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

William Lee White

HENDERSON -- William Lee White, 69, of 304 Regional Water Lane died Sunday night, Aug. 12, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill.
He was born April 18, 1932, in Franklin County to Bob and Clara White. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a retired Henderson service station owner and auto mechanic.
In October 1961, he married Irene M. Mangum, who survives at the home.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Pat Hodge of Henderson; a stepson, Milton Mangum of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church of Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to the Carey Baptist Church Youth Fund.

Elizabeth A. Gentry

OXFORD -- Elizabeth Adcock Gentry, 87, of 500 Prospect Ave. died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, in Oxford Manor. She was a Granville County native, the daughter of the late Benjamin Wesley and Effie Hobgood Adcock and the widow of Maynard A. Gentry.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel by the Rev. David Grissom. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Betsy G. Greenway of Camden, S.C.; two sons, Ferrell Gentry of Austin, Texas, and Autry Gentry of Oxford; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Oxford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 757, Oxford, N.C. 27565, or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, c/o Anita Harrison, 705 Broad St., Durham, N.C. 27703.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home of Autry and Betty Lou Gentry, 105 E. Front St., Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Judith Mayse

Judith Mayse, 55, of 4651 N.C. 96 South died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at her residence.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Brenda L. Sanford

OXFORD -- Brenda L. Sanford, 41, of 1605 Jack-Clement Road, Stem, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
She was a Granville County native and attended Granville County Schools.
Surviving are her parents, John William Sanford and Lucy Mae Allen Sanford of the home; four brothers, Wesley Sanford and Robert D. Sanford, both of Oxford, Stanley W. Sanford of Creedmoor, and John W. Sanford of Harrisonburg, Va.; and two sisters, Melinda A. Lyons and Carolyn A. Sanford, both of Butner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ by Elder John Lyon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Thornton Williamson

OXFORD -- Thornton Williamson, 74, of 307 Delacroix St. died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at his home. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Fuller and Thelma Cash Williamson.
He was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Bob Baynard. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Adcock Williamson; a daughter, Cathy W. Hasty of Raleigh; a son, Gregory T. Williamson of Henderson; a sister, Mary Ann Weary, and a brother, Bobby Williamson, both of Bullock; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Quinton L. Alston

HENDERSON -- Quinton Lamont Alston, 16, of 262 Sycamore Lane died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001. He was the son of James McKinley Alston and Dorothy Alston-Williams. He was the stepson of Laura Alston and Elvin Williams.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ by the Rev. Wright, the Rev. Johnny Hargrove and Minister Marciano Scales. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, James M. Alston of Franklinton and Dorothy Alston-Williams of Henderson; three sisters, Angela Pettiford of Durham and Laquesha Williams and Jasmine Williams of Henderson; and his grandparents, Junious and Evone Hargrove of Henderson.
Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends and family.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Jesse H. Carter Jr.

HENDERSON -- Jesse Hugh Carter Jr., 54, a Vance County native, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001. He was the son of the late Jesse and Lizzie Carter.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Wesley Crews. Interment will follow in the Brookston Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Angie Porter of Grand Prairie, Texas; three grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce Carter of Queens, N.Y.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Helen C. Coleman

DURHAM -- Mrs. Helen Critcher Coleman, 86, died Tuesday at Durham Regional Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Coleman was born in Oxford, the daughter of the late Murry and Emma Critcher. She was a needlepoint expert who took great joy in sharing her work with others. Mrs. Coleman and her late husband, Clarence W. Coleman, had a love of gardening and enjoyed sharing vegetables with friends.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by several nieces and nephews, along with many very special friends.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Dr. Bob O’Keef will officiate. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 to 9 at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home.
Flowers are being accepted, or donations may be made to Mount Sylvan United Methodist Church, 5731 N. Roxboro Road, Durham, N.C. 27712.

Sadie F. Jones

HENDERSON -- Sadie Fields Jones of the Stovall community died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

Floyd E. Manning

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Floyd Edward Manning, 52, of Newport News died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was a native of Vance County and the son of John Lee Manning and the late Hattie Thelma Small Manning.
He graduated in 1967 from Henderson Institute and then served 23 years in the U.S. Army, fighting in the Vietname War with honors, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Medal. He had a bachelor of science and a master’s degree in sociology. He was employed as a social worker and case manager for the Department of Social Services in Hampton, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Antioch United Church of Christ by the Rev. John E. Durham. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Parker Manning; two daughters, Shaveka Manning of Newport News and Tamara Manning of Henderson; one son, Larry Manning of Henderson; his father, John Lee Manning of Henderson; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Rufus Manning of Stovall and Marvin Manning of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of John Lee Manning, 700 Woodsworth Road. The body will be on view until taken to the church one hour before the service.
Pallbearers will be the Class of 1967.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Judith Mayse

OXFORD -- Judith “Judy” Mayse, 56, of 4651 N.C. 96 South died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Baltimore and the daughter of the late James H. Smith.
She was retired from Northern Telecom and a member of Oxford United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Thurman Horney. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are her husband, Julius “Bud” Mayse; her mother, Gladys Trujillo of Henderson; one sister, Catherine Gillespie of Henderson; and two brothers, James Smith of Baltimore and Richard Smith of Texas.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Sam Russell

WARRENTON -- Sam Russell, 94, of the Russell Union community died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at White’s Grove Christian Church in Norlina by the Rev. Hezekiah Hendrick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Frances Thomas of Philadelphia; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

William H. Gibson
WARRENTON -- William Henry Gibson, 83, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Bud Gibson and Emma Davis Gibson.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Warrenton Church of God.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Warrenton Church of God by the Rev. Wesley Britt. Burial will follow in the Gardner’s Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving is one sister, Mabel Cassidy of Hartsville, S.C.
Memorials may be made to the Warrenton Church of God, South Main Street, Warrenton, N.C. 27589.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Sadie F. Jones

HENDERSON -- Sadie Fields Jones, 60, of the Stovall community died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Jessie and Lizzie Mae Nelson Fields.
She was a graduate of G.C. Shaw High School and later moved to Connecticut and worked as a licensed cosmetologist.
Returning to North Carolina, she worked at Murdock Center as a ward supervisor. She also was a member of the Concerned Women of Justice and a Stovall community volunteer.
She was a member of Unity Fellowship Church, where she served as a deacon, youth Bible teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school, usher coordinator, financial secretary and trustee.
She was secretary of bookkeeping for Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Unity Fellowship Church by the Rev. Kurt A. Campbell, assisted by the Revs. Jimmy Johnson and Brenda Peace. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Crystal Daye of Oxford; one son, Curtis Jones of Florida; one sister, Mildred Douglas of Connecticut; and one grandson.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

Margaret R. Adcox
GOLDSBORO -- Margaret Robbins Adcox, 73, of 102 Hill Court, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Anna Jarrell of Henderson and the late James Robbins.
She was a member of Rosewood First Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today at Rosewood First Baptist Church with the Revs. E.C. Mattocks and Vernon Braswell officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Henderson.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Garland A. Adcox; son, John Robert Adcox of Iliamna, Ala.; sister, Mary Cleaton and Ernestine Stell, both of Henderson; brother, Frank Robbins of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The body will lie in state until 12:15 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Seymour Funeral Home of Goldsboro.

Ruby C. Brinkley

CREEDMOOR -- Ruby Cheek Brinkley, 85, of 9901 Boyce Road, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center in Oxford. She was a Durham County native, the daughter of the late Lucius A. and Lillian Ross Cheek and the widow of Will Bernice Brinkley.
She was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Belk’s in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Jack Hollowell. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Geri B. Mangum and Bonnie B. Roberts, both of Creedmoor; a son, Bernice C. Brinkley of Creedmoor; a sister, Arlene Husketh of Durham; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A grandson, Benny Moss, preceded her in death.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Olive Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 3024 Olive Grove Church Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home of Bernice and Kate Brinkley, 1524 Munns Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
