Nancy S. Hufford

OXFORD -- Nancy Sluyter Hufford, 50, of 5688 Hobgood Road, Rougemont, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Towanda, Pa., and the daughter of the late William Sluyter.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was formerly employed by the Butner-Creedmoor News.
There will be no formal funeral service.
Surviving are her husband, John A. Hufford of the home; two sons, J.R. Hufford of Creedmoor, Travis Hufford of Rougemont; her mother and stepfather, Laura and Chris Bullock of Wyalusing, Pa.; two sisters, Rose Cender of Inglis, Fla., Julia Johnson of Towanda, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Sluyter and James Sluyter, both of Towanda, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
Private visitation will be held at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.

Terry Hughes

WARRENTON -- Terry Hughes, 40, of the Baltimore Road community, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at his residence after a sudden illness.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Sadie F. Jones

HENDERSON -- Sadie Fields Jones, 60, of the Stovall community, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Jessie and Lizzie Mae Nelson Fields.
She was a former graduate of G.C. Shaw High School and later moved to Connecticut and worked as a licensed cosmotologist. Returning to North Carolina, she worked at Murdock Center as a ward supervisor. She was also a member of the Concerned Women of Justice and a Stovall community volunteer. She was a member of Unity Fellowship Church, where she served as a deacon, youth Bible teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school, usher coordinator, church financial secretary, and a trustee. She was secretary of bookkeeping for Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Unity Fellowship Church by the Rev. Kurt A. Campbell, assisted by the Revs. Jimmy Johnson and Brenda Peace. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Crystal Daye of Oxford; one son, Curtis Jones of Florida; one sister, Mildred Douglas of Connecticut; and one grandson.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. until taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Maurice M. Wheeler

RALEIGH -- Maurice M. Wheeler, 48 of 10612 Chelsea Drive, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at his residence. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late L. Graham Wheeler Jr.
He was a member of Delrayno Baptist Church and a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Troup #50 of Garner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Hilton Moore Jr. Burial will follow in the Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Tina Ellis Wheeler of the home; one daughter, Crystal L. Wheeler of Raleigh; one son, Brian E. Wheeler of the home; his mother, Ruth “Terry” Hughes Wheeler of Oxford; one sister, Amelia W. Lovick of Bullock; one brother, Joseph G. Wheeler III of Dunn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, 5970 Fairview Road, Suite 708, Charlotte, N.C. 28210 or to the American Diabetes. Association, 434 Fayetteville, St. Mall, 2-Hanover Square, Raleigh, N.C. 27601-1764 or to Delrayno Baptist Church, 208 Rayland St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Teny Wheeler, 1113 College St., Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Mary B. Henderson

NORLINA -- Mary Brame Henderson, 87, of Rt. 2, Norlina, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Solomon and Lula Jefferson Brame.
She served as a deaconess and member of Brookston Baptist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Smith. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
She was a graduate of Henderson Institute and received her bachelor of arts degree from Winston-Salem State Teachers College in 1941. She taught school in Vance County for nearly 40 years.
She was affiliated with the Winston-Salem State University Alumni Association, Daisy Garden Club, Association of Educators and many other organizations.
Surviving are a brother, James Brame Sr.; a sister, Ora Lee Brame Burton; and a foster brother, Melvin Norfleet.
Pallbearers will be Alex Williams, Clinton Alston, the Rev. Emmitt Jefferson, Willis Hawkins, Pazanta Goolsby, James L. Goolsby.
Viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Garnes Funeral Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Terry Hughes

Surviving are his wife, Maggie P. Hughes of the home; mother, Edna M. Hughes of Enfield; one daughter, Demetria Caudle of Enfield; one grandson; one sister, Deborah H. Parker of Rocky Mount; and one brother, Rodman S. Somerville of Enfield.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Joseph Jiggetts

OXFORD -- Joseph “Dixie” Jiggetts, 53, of 107 Daniel St., Oxford, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. He was the son of the late Joseph and Nora Jiggetts Sr.
He was a 1966 graduate of Mary Potter High School. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he was affiliated with several choirs, an usher and a member of the Missionary Circle.
Growing up in the Oak Grove community, he organized softball games and tournaments. He coached Love Unlimited Girls Softball Team. He also worked with the City Recreation Department, serving as umpire and score keeper.
He was employed with Iams Company for the past 10 years.
He was a bowler and helped organize bowling tournaments throughout the southeastern states. He joined and served the Henderson Bowling Association for a number of years. He founded and organized the Guys & Dolls Bowling Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray A. Allsberry, pastor. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda W. Jiggetts of the home; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Speed of the home; and five sisters, Lena Adams of Temple Hills, Md., Flora Sanders of College Park, Md., Margaret Bullock of Durham, Vermadine Clark and Vicky Jiggetts, both of Oxford.
Arrangements are by Allen’s Home of Funerals of Oxford.

Joseph E. Jones Jr.

HENDERSON -- Joseph “Pluto” Edwards Jones Jr., of Townsville, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Service.

Shirley Mason

HENDERSON -- Shirley Mason, 82, of 601 Thomas St., died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Emma R. Plummer

HENDERSON -- Emma Ruth Plummer, formerly of Middleburg, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, in Maryland.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Service.

Mary Frances Pitts Proctor

HENDERSON -- Mary Frances Pitts Proctor, 70, a resident of 8295 N.C. Highway 39 North, was killed in an automobile accident on Sunday, August 19th.
She was a native of Georgia and lived most of her life in Vance County. She was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries in Clarksville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Island Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnson Gupton and Rev. Marshall Neathery. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Henry W. Proctor Sr. of the home; a daughter, Pamela Proctor-West of Henderson; a son, Henry W. Proctor, Jr. of Henderson; three grandchildren, Henry W. Proctor III, Christopher Lee Proctor, Gary Michael West; five sisters, Annie Mae Brewer of Coverington, Ga., Nellie Pitts of Marion, Emily Hardy of Cathleen, Ga., Lola Reynolds of Tavares, Fla., Ann Randall of Lilburn, Ga.; and a brother, Nelson Pitts of Bogart, Ga. A son, Gary Randall Proctor preceded her in death.
Visitation 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.

Lester Wilson

MIDDLETOWN, PA. -- Lester Wilson, 85, of 12 Nissley Drive, Middletown, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at his residence.
He was a retired dental technician of the former Olmsted Air Force Base, Lower Swatara Twp., and was also employed by Lower Swatara Twp. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 594, a lifetime member of the Lower Swatara Fire Co., and the Golden Group, all of Middletown. He was an Army Airforce veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Miriam E. Taylor Wilson; one son, Robert Wilson of Middletown; two daughters, Judithann Straub and Charlene Wadlinger, both of Hummelstown, Pa.; one sister, Minnie Daniels of Kenbridge, Va.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Frank E. Matinchek & Daughter Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Middletown. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Garden, Lower Paxton Twp.
Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pinnacle Health Hospice, 3705 Elmwood Drive, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110, or to the Alzheimers Association of South Central Pa. Chapter, Governor’s Plaza South, 2001 N. Front St., Bldg. 2-Suite 321, Harrisburg, Pa. 17102.

Vernon Goff
NORLINA -- Vernon Goff, 81, of Norlina died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Imlaystown, N.J., and the son of the late John Goff and Jane Kramer Goff.
He was a retired plumber and World War II Army veteran. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home. No funeral services are scheduled.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie Mueller Goff; two daughters, Kathy Crain of Cooperas Cove, Texas, and Alice Grim of Plano, Texas; one son in Philadelphia; two sisters; three brothers; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Joseph E. Jones Jr.

HENDERSON -- Joseph “Pluto” Edward Jones Jr. of Townsville died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Mecklenburg County and the son of the late Joseph and Annie Mae Jones Sr.
He was educated in the Mecklen-burg County school system and was a former farmer and employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Antioch United Church of Christ by the Revs. John Durham, Tina Evans and Andrew Taylor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Marie V. Jones; a daughter, Annie Parham of Henderson; four sons, Dallas Venable of Montgomery, Ala., Rodney Venable and Edward Jones of Henderson, and Joseph M. Jones of the home; one sister, Vernal Johnson of Epps Fork, Va.; four brothers, Bobby Jones of Townsville and Frank Jones, Hampton Jones and R. Roscoe Jones, all of Henderson; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Dezra R. Keen

RALEIGH -- Dezra Royce Keen, 59, of Beaver Dam Road died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Rex Hospital. He was a Wilson County native and the son of the late Dezra and Audrey Keen.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home.
Surviving are two children, Michael Keen of Raleigh and Marian Ervin of Lebanon, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Joyce K. Thompson of Henderson, Judy K. Boykin of Wilson and Gail K. Knowles of Simpsonville, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home.

Kirby A. Kinsley

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Kirby Alexander Kinsley, infant son of Bryan Taylor and Cynthia Grissom Kinsley of 1244 Heath Stone Lane and former residents of Henderson, died on August 15 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Private graveside services will be held by the family at Nutbush Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Cam Ford.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Christian H. Kinsley and twin brother Zachary T. Kinsley of the home; his maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Phyllis Grissom of Henderson; his paternal grandparents, Ronald and Mary Anne Kinsley of Henderson; his maternal great-grandmother, Helen Wheeler of Henderson; and his aunts and uncles, Blaine and Sharon Kinsley, Kimberly Kinsley, Jay and Stephanie Grissom, and John Mark Grissom.
The family will be at the home of Ronald and Mary Anne Kinsley at 2700 Poplar Creek Road.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mary Frances Proctor

HENDERSON -- Mary Frances Pitts Proctor, 70, a resident of 8295 N.C. 39 North, was killed in an automobile accident Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001.

Frances B. Brooks

OXFORD -- Frances Buchanan Brooks, 89, of 2557 Joe Pruitt Road died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in Granville Medical Center. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Mary Stainback Buchanan.
She was the widow of Earl C. Brooks and a member of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church by the Revs. Maurice Cooper and Lemar Wheeler. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Charlotte B. Bennett of Henderson and Mildred B. Oakes of Oxford; one sister, Annie Mae Ball of Newport News, Va.; one brother, W. Ray Buchanan of Henderson; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Morgan Frances Tart.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Tabbs Creek Baptist Church, 5609 Tabbs Creek Church Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Mildred Oakes, 5597 Tabbs Creek Road, Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Glen E. Bullock

HENDERSON -- Glen Edward Bullock, 46, a native of Vance County, died Aug. 20, 2001, in Durham.
He was a graduate of Vance High School. He later relocated to New York, attended Mandel Medical School and was a certified lab technician. He returned in 1991 and attended Vance-Granville Community College, becoming a certified nursing assistant. He was employed by Revlon in Oxford.
Surviving are his mother, Margaret Anderson, and stepfather, Fuller Anderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ by the Rev. Henry Johen. Interment will follow in the Middleburg cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 195 N. Washington St. in Middleburg.
The body will be at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service from noon Friday until it is taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the services Saturday.
Floral bearers will be Clinette Ealey, Doretha Perry, Debbie Hunt, Shakira Hargrove, Carmela Suswell, Lisa Bullock and Shirley Lewis.
Pallbearers will be Bernard Davis, Connell Bullock, Billy Fudge, Bobbie Hargrove, Larry Eaton and Clyde Baskerville.
