Kirby A. Kinsley

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Kirby Alexander Kinsley, infant son of Bryan Taylor and Cynthia Grissom Kinsley of 1244 Heath Stone Lane and former residents of Henderson, died on August 15 at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Private graveside services will be held by the family at Nutbush Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Cam Ford.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Christian H. Kinsley and twin brother Zachary T. Kinsley of the home; his maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Phyllis Grissom of Henderson; his paternal grandparents, Ronald and Mary Anne Kinsley of Henderson; his maternal great-grandmother, Helen Wheeler of Henderson; and his aunts and uncles, Blaine and Sharon Kinsley, Kimberly Kinsley, Jay and Stephanie Grissom, and John Mark Grissom.
The family will be at the home of Ronald and Mary Anne Kinsley at 2700 Poplar Creek Road.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Brett R. Bullock

HENDERSON -- Brett Russell Bullock, 32, of Las Vegas died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001. He was a Wake County native and the son of Leonard M. Bullock III and Carolyn Sue Reavis Bullock of Greensboro.
He was a carpenter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Pam Gilliam. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a daughter, Brittney Marie Thomas Bullock of Greensboro; two brothers, Leonard M. Bullock IV of Dortmund, Germany, and Robert James Bullock of Katy, Texas; and his paternal grandmother, Olga Pauline Plusheff Bullock of Chesapeake, Va.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Flowers Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be James W. Bullock Jr., Venson Wallin, Jason Tucker, Lance Tucker, Hoyle Reavis, John Reavis, George Reavis, Bailey Barker, Anthony Barker, Chris Reavis and Joel Creech.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to The Harbor Ministries, 2715 Perez, Pasadena, Texas 77502.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

William R. Cain

HENDERSON- William Ray Cain, 78, a resident of 673 Beck Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
The family will be at the home of Clay and Billie Frazier, 2007 Brookrun Road. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Calvin Carter

WARREN COUNTY -- Calvin Carter, 39, of Warren County died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Annie R. Downey

OXFORD -- Annie Royster Downey, 93, of 2617 Little Mount Creek Road died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Nathan Royster and Hattie Jones Royster.
She was a member of the New Grassy Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Missionary Board.
Surviving are four daughters, Pearlene Young of Spotsylvania, Va., Hattie Leora Smith of Oxford, Mildred Marie Downey of the home and Arizona Downey of Landover, Md.; three sons, Ernest Thomas of Hanau, Germany, Silas Downey Jr. of Oxford and Carlton Previous of Radcliff, Ky.; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at New Grassy Creek Baptist Church by the Revs. Carlton P. Downey and Moses Fletcher. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Shirley Mason

HENDERSON -- Shirley Mason, 82, of 601 Thomas St. died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Chaney Hayes Kelly and Robert Kelly.
She was retired from J.P. Taylor Tobacco after working for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith by Bishop Rufus Hargrove Sr. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Annie Young of Springvalley, N.Y., and Myrtha C. Mason of Washington, D.C.; four sons, Jasper Thomas Mason of Milliville, N.J., James Mason of Georgia, and Coleman Mason and Maurice Mason, both of Henderson; three sisters, Elnora Hamilton and Esther Crews, both of Washington, D.C., and Ruth Hayes of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Sat-urday at the church. Other times, they will be at the residence.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

Mary P. Pendergrass

HENDERSON -- Mary Patterson Pendergrass, 78, of 353 Southall St., formerly of Bailey, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Wilson Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shingleton Funeral Home Chapel by the Revs. Branson Sheets and Joe Jones. Interment will follow in Bailey cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Charles L. “Joe” Pendergrass; two daughters, Jane Brantley of Bailey and Shelby J. O’Neal of Spring Hope; one stepdaughter, Miranda Cross of Henderson; one son, Willis Carnell Patterson of Bailey; two stepsons, Charles A. Pendergrass of Henderson and Jeff L. Pendergrass of Pinehurst; one sister, Margaret Barrett of Henderson; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Shingleton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jane Brantley, 9758 Camp Charles Road in Bailey.
Arrangements are by Shingleton Funeral Home of Wilson.

Virginia R. Peoples

HENDERSON -- Virginia Raines Peoples, 86, formerly of Eastway Drive, died Wednes-day, Aug. 22, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Robert Royal and Tellie Falkner Raines. She was the widow of Albert Morgan Peoples.
She was a retired employee of the old Peck Manufacturing Co. in Warrenton. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Ray McDonald. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn P. Poole of Montgomery, Ala.; two sons, Charles E. Peoples Sr. of Oxford and Donald W. Peoples Sr. of Henderson; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn P. Forsythe, and two sons, Ted Peoples and Ronald Peoples.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the family home, 2549 Vicksboro Road, Henderson.
Her grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Emma R. Plummer

OXON HILL, Md. -- Emma Ruth Plummer, daughter of the late William and Henrietta Henderson Plummer, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, in Oxon Hill. She was formerly of Middleburg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Middleburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four sons, Jimmie Plummer of Temple Hills, Md., Walter Plummer of Fort Washington, Md., Lewis Plummer of Houston and William Plummer of Henderson; five daughters, Lucille Russell of Washington, D.C., Emma Bailey of Oxon Hill, Joanne Ward of Fort Washington, Md., and Bobbie Rainey and Linda Potts, both of Henderson; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel, and all other times at 331 Will Jefferson Road in Williamsboro.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

William Ray Cain

HENDERSON -- William Ray Cain, age 78, a resident of 673 Beck Avenue, died Thursday, August 23, 2001, at UNC Hospital Chapel Hill. He was born in Gaffney, South Carolina, and was a native of Wilkes County. He was the son of the late Thomas Edgar Cain and Margaret Henderson Cain.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served during WWII. He worked for Sealtest Milk Company for 22 years, and he also worked for Vulcan Materials.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2417, and Henderson Masonic Lodge 229 AF & AM.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Greer Cain of the home; four daughters, Dianna C. Grant and husband Richard of Ravenel, South Carolina, Sue C. Parks and husband Larry of Winston-Salem, Fran C. Trotman and husband William of Charleston, South Carolina, and Billie C. Frazier and husband Clay of Henderson; eight grandchildren, Patrick Smith, Kathy Parker, Cyndi Smith, William Trotman Jr., Andrew Trotman, Rachel McClure, Gill Frazier and Tate Frazier; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Billie and Clay Frazier, 2007 Brookrun Rd.
Serving as pallbearers will be Patrick Smith, William Trotman Jr., Andrew Trotman, Calvin Falkner, Victor Horton, Ronald Satterwhite, Dennis Renn and Bill Joines.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the The Children’s Ministry at the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, North Carolina 27536, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 914, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Calvin Carter

WARREN COUNTY -- Calvin Carter, 39, of Warren County died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Embro by the Rev. Edward Harrington. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Katie Mae Johnson Carter; three sons, Steven Harris Jr. of Germany and Calvin A. Carter Jr. and Charles A. Carter, both of the home; three half-brothers, Kendall Carter of Dalton and Herbert Carter and Dansell Carter, both of Franklin County; and his stepmother, Lucy Carter of Arcola.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Rose H. Collins

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Rose Hunter Collins, 69, of 246 Horseshoe Bend Road, Jonesborough, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Callie V. Hunter and Ida Lloyd Hunter.
She had lived in the Johnson City area for the past 29 years and was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Johnson City Church of God, where she had been the pastor’s wife the past 28 years. For more than 40 years, she had served as the Ladies Ministries director in the Church of God.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday at Johnson City Church of God by Dr. Walter Atkinson and Dr. John D. Nichols. Committal services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Fairview cemetery in Washington County, Tenn. Friends are invited to meet the family at the church by 9:30 a.m. Monday to go in procession to the cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. W. Bryant Collins; six sons, Rocky Collins, C. Bryant Collins, Ben C. Collins and Kelly H. Collins, all of Johnson City, Tony L. Collins of Morristown, and Jody L. Collins of Jonesborough; four daughters, Rhonda C. Swiger of Hamilton, Ohio, Kathy C. Nunley and Rochelle C. Bradley, both of Telford, and Paul C. Willis of Jonesborough; three brothers, Mac Hunter of Durham, Claude Hunter of Roseville and Jack Hunter of Fayetteville; two sisters, Lorene Waldrop of Elko, Nev., and Ann Waldrop of Alpharetta, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Allen Hunter and Bobby Hunter, and a grandson, Keith Collins, preceded her in death.
Active pallbearers will be the Rev. Collins’ fellow ministers in the Johnson City Church of God District. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Collins, Raymond Collins, Mac Hunter, Claude Hunter and Jack Hunter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson City Church of God, 1908 Indian Ridge Road, Johnson City, Tenn. 37604.

Mary R. Herrin

HENDERSON -- Mary Louise Roberson Ellington Herrin, a resident of 279 E. Stratford Drive, died Friday, August 24, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Elbert Roberson and Annie Reed Roberson.
She was a homemaker and a charter member of the Central Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church by the Rev. Alan McAlister and Rev. James Lancaster. Entombment will follow at Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her husband, John Clegg Herrin of the home; four sons, Jimmy Ellington and wife Carolyn, Bobby Ellington, David Ellington and wife Wanda, Eddie Ellington and wife Kim, all of Henderson; six daughters, Dale E. Harris and husband Hardie, Kathy E. Jones and fiancé Drennon Strickland, Starr Ellington, Donna E. Young and husband Dewey, Linda E. Stevens and husband Jason, all of Henderson, and Deborah E. Allen and husband Claude of Creedmoor; two stepsons, David Herrin and wife Donna of Raleigh and Dwight Herrin and wife Jennifer of Greensboro; she was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Ellington, and her first husband, Clyde F. Ellington; fourteen grandchildren, Kimberly E. Jackson, Alex E. Grissom, Audie Ellington, Lisa J. Pendergrass, Jennifer Jones, Amy Ellington, Jill Ellington, Jan Ellington, Dylan Ellington, Bill Allen, Sara Ann Allen, Shannon Young, Kyle Fox, Jonathan Fox; four step-grandchildren, Paul Herrin, Morgan Herrin, Sarah Herrin, Emily Herrin; five great-grandchildren, Christopher Pendergrass, Connor Pendergrass, Hillary Jackson, Kaitlyn Jackson, Jackson Grissom; and two sisters, Helen R. Owens of Henderson and Elizabeth R. Rogers of Morehead City.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chuck Burnham, George Long, Clay Watson, Lloyd Johnson, Maurice Boyd, E.C. Watson.

Frank O. King

BULLOCK -- Frank Oliver King, 83, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Meadowview Terrance Nursing Home in Clarksville, Va.
He grew up in the Townsville community, graduated from Stovall High School and was a member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked for a dental lab in Durham for 50 years.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Townsville. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are six first cousins.
The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy Buchanan on College Street in Clarksville.

Elnora M. Ashe
HENDERSON -- Elnora McKnight Ashe, 88, of 1812, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at her residence. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Elnora Kate Alston and James McKnight.
She joined Manassus Baptist Church at an early age. She married the Rev. James Frankley Ashe who preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Welcome Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Saint Silver. Burial will follow in the Sunset Garden.
Surviving are one son, Johnny Ashe of Henderson; three daughters, Ruth Watkins of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ethel Walker of Henderson, Susie Ashe of the home; one brother, Charlie McKnight of Henderson; three sisters, Pattie Thompson, Adell Jones, Gertha Thorpe, all of Henderson; one adopted sister, Catherine Banks of Perth Amboy, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday and other times at the residence.

D.T. Ayscue Jr.

HENDERSON -- David Thomas “D.T.” Ayscue, Jr., age 71, a resident of 246 Crestwood Road, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at his home.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late D.T. and Elsie Faulkner Ayscue. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a retired Area Supervisor with Flu-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, and the Henderson Lions Club.
A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy McLemore Ayscue, of the home; one daughter, Nancy Lu Ayscue Baker and husband, Thomas, of Henderson; one son, David T. Ayscue, III and wife, Joan, of Vienna, West Virginia; and five grandchildren, Daniel T. Baker, Sarah Nancy Baker, David T. Ayscue, IV, Catherine Marie Ayscue, and Megan Ayscue.
The family will receive friends at the home at 246 Crestwood Road and immediately following the service in the Ladies Parlor of the First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, N.C. 27536 or to the Henderson Lions Club P.O. Box 395 Henderson N.C. 27536.

Carl D. Blake

HENDERSON -- Carl David “Bill” Blake, 78, of 240 Oak St., Henderson, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at his home. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Lola Neville and Lessie Bowen Blake.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired owner and operator of the former City Auto Repair. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Island Creek Baptist Church.
He was an active member of the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 A.F.&A.M., where he served as secretary for many years. He was a member of the Henderson Shrine Club, Amran Shrine Temple, and was past patron of the James B. White Chapter No. 199 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Island Creek Baptist Church by the Revs. George W. Pullium Jr. and W. Johnson Gupton. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Emma Knott Blake; two sons, David L. Blake of Fuquay-Varina and Dennis W. Blake of Raleigh; two sisters, Myrtle B. Dreyer of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Lola B. Carter of Zellwood, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy L. Blake, and three brothers, George G. Blake, James H. Blake and Branson E. Blake.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home.
Pallbearers will be members of the Henderson Masonic Lodge.

OXFORD -- Ruby M. Gregory, of Cleveland, Ohio, and a native of Granville County, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Cleveland.
