Vannah S.D. Powell

ROXBORO -- Vannah Sue Denny Powell, 87, of 610 Polk Huff Road died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing and Retirement Center. She was a Person County native, the daughter of the late Arthur and Carrie Sherman Denny, and the widow of Clyde E. Powell.
She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and a retired farmer and homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Sharon Baptist Church by the Revs. Jerry Burts and Robert Baynard. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her sons, Ralph D. Powell and Ray E. Powell, both of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Gladys D. Gillis and Belle D. Tingen, both of Oxford; a brother, Eulie Denny of Oxford; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Percy L. Powell, and a granddaughter, Connie L. Powell.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to the Sharon Baptist Church Van Fund, c/o Marion S. Powell, 1010 Roxboro Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Etheline Bumpass

OXFORD -- Etheline Bumpass, 54, of 4680 Belltown Road died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late William Bumpass and Effie Brooks Bumpass.
She was a graduate of Toler High School and a member of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon B. Curtis of the home and Deborah B. Bumpass of Oxford; one sister, Rosa Mae Hester of Oxford; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jimmie L. Johnson and Minister Ida Black. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Veary S. Eaton

OXFORD -- Veary S. Eaton, 81, of 414 Granville St. died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Ilong Baptist Church by the Rev. James M. Lawson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors at the church 30 minutes before the services.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Boyd Mayfield

NORLINA -- Boyd Mayfield died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, in Durham.
Arrangements will be announced by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

W. Edgar Robertson Sr.

HENDERSON -- William Edgar Robertson Sr., 95, of 365 Southerland Mill Road died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Jim and Bessie Pendergrass Robertson.
He was a retired farmer and a member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Michael E. Rocheleau.
Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Lillie Mae Wright Robertson; two daughters, Jessie R. Burnette of Henderson and Mildred R. Hicks of Fayetteville; two sons, William Edgar Robertson Jr. and James Melvin “Jimmy” Robertson, both of Henderson; three sisters, Esther R. Foster and Bessie R. Edwards, both of Henderson, and Eunice R. Horne of Wilmington; a brother, Medicus H. “Med” Robertson of Raleigh; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Beulah R. Riggan, Pearl R. Hopkins, Georgia R. Moore and Jessie Robertson, and five brothers, Howard Robertson, Horace “Cutter” Robertson, Junius Robertson, Walter Robertson and Clifton Robertson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Jessie Burnette, 395 Southerland Mill Road,.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 2440 S. Cokesbury Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.

Marie G. Wilson

MACON -- Marie G. Wilson, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, died August 30th, 2001. She will always be treasured for the courage and goodness she exemplified during her life.
She was born June 19, 1923, in Orange County to the late Clarence E. Goforth and Madge Burke Goforth and lived much of her early life in the Durham area. She was married to William J. Wilson for 48 years and lived most of those years in Macon, N.C. She was a devoted wife and was a great comfort to her husband during his long illness.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Macon Baptist Church, the Macon Woman’s Club and a member of the Town Board of Macon. She worked as a Postal Employee for 30-plus years and retired in 1983 as the Postmaster of Wise, N.C. She was recognized by the U.S. Postal Service as Handicap Employee of the Year for her district.
During her last three years, she lived in Oxford, N.C., with her oldest daughter, Madge, who cared for her.
The family would like to thank Mary Alice Howard and Amy Jones for their special care and loving concern. In addition, Hospice was a great comfort to Marie and the family, and we offer our gratitude to them.
The Revs. Rob Evans and Joan Daniels will conduct funeral services 3 p.m. Sunday, September 2nd, at the Macon Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are three daughters, Madge Wilheim, Nancy Borjes and Deborah Ward, who will miss her always; three sons-in-law, Wayne Wilheim, Steve Borjes and Thomas Ward; five grandchildren, Bill Reid, Rhonda Cheatham, Carmen Keziah, Leslie Petty and Lee Ward; five great-grandchildren, Tiffany Capps, Logan Keziah, Auburn Petty, Bryce Keziah and Ashlyn Petty; a brother, C.E. Goforth; and a sister, Lucille Cullingford, with whom she shared much love and laughter; three sisters-in-law, Kate Riggan, Lina Walker, Eva Ralph; a brother-in-law, Tip Wilson, with whom she shared many joys and sorrows; and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to Hospice of the Triangle, Durham Office, 1804 MLK Jr. Pkwy. #112, Durham, N.C. 27707.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton, Saturday, September 1st, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Kitara J. Crawley

HENDERSON -- Kitara J. Crawley, 13, of Route 2, Henderson, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Durham and the daughter of Robert and Lorrie Crawley.
She attended Miriam Boyd Elementary School, Warren County Middle School and Vance Charter School.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Progressive Faith Baptist Church by the Rev. Douglas Judkins. Interment will be in the Mitchell Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert Anthony and Kaylom Royce; the maternal grandparents, Virginia Hawkins and George R. Hawkins and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Foster; and a great-grandfather, Roy Foster Sr.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Progressive Faith Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Dartez Wright, Tremel Wilson, Elliot Carver, Alvis Dowtin, Khalil McShaw and Terrance Foster.

Gracie C. Debnam

HENDERSON -- Gracie Currin Debnam, 53, of 105 Briarwood St. died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Osbin Currin Sr. and Annie Carrol Currin. She was an employee of Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson Chapel by Elder Osbin Currin Jr. and the Revs. Ronald Wheless, Melvin Bullock Sr., Lawrence Harrison and Thomas Rice. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are two brothers, Alvin Currin and Osbin Currin Jr., both of Henderson; and two sisters, Linda C. Bullock and Marilyn C. Yancey, both of Henderson.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Perninah Anne K. Gupton

HENDERSON -- Perninah Anne King Gupton, 78, of 750 Boddie Street, Henderson, died Friday, August 31, 2001 in Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Manco and Sarah King. She was the widow of Herbert Lee Gupton.
Mrs. Gupton was a retired employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns Inc.
Funeral services will be held Monday, at 2 p.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Keith Rhudy. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane P. Edwards, and husband, Ricky, and Joanie P. Medlin, and husband, A.J., all of Henderson; two sons, Norwood Eugene Peoples, and wife, Renee, of Wake Forest, and Bobby F. Peoples, and wife, Patricia, of Raleigh; two sisters, Grace K. Jones of Rolesville and Anna Belle K. Burham of Wake Forest; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jason Robertson, Kyle Robertson, Chris Medlin, Derick Edwards and Dennis Sanford.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

David K. Hughes

HENDERSON -- David Kirk Hughes, 41, of 1105 Hargrove St., Henderson, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by Flowers Funeral Home.

Claude Douglas Johnson

NORFOLK, Va. -- Claude Douglas “Doug” Johnson Sr., 73, of the 1300 block of East Ocean View Avenue died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001.
Born in Wake Forest and raised in Henderson, he retired with 22 years of service to the United States, rising to chief petty officer in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietname War.
He retired with 20 years of service from the Interstate/Gulf Life Insurance Co. as a district manager/trainer, operated Johnson’s School of Insurance and Johnson’s Quick Stop Foods, and worked for Ward Realty.
He was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 3106, the USS Mansfield Association (DD-728), Fleet Reserve Branch 60, Freemasons AFAM No. 335, Khedive Temple (Shriners) 13177, Ocean View Eastern Star and the CLU/LUTC Association.
His son Claude Douglas Johnson Jr. preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Clara A. Johnson; five children, James L. Johnson of Louisville, Ky., Linda R. Miller of Harrisonburg, Va., Jerry F. Johnson of Statesboro, Ga., Herbert F. Johnson of Stanardsville, Va., and William M. Johnson of Elkton, Va.; a brother, Charlie F. Johnson of Burlington; a sister, Gertrude Williams of Henderson; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Ocean View Baptist Church in Norfolk.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Doug Johnson Memorial Building Fund, c/o Baptist Student Union, Box 8117, Statesboro, Ga. 30460, or to Ocean View Baptist Church, Norfolk.

Wallace B. Mayfield

NORLINA -- Wallace Boyd Mayfield, 91, died August 31st, 2001, in Durham at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, John and Myrtle Mayfield.
Mr. Mayfield was a native of South Carolina, born August 14, 1910, to the late John Weldon Mayfield and Panthea Boyd White. He was very active for many years in the work of Zion United Methodist Church and in civic affairs in Warren County.
Rev. Warren Cash will conduct funeral services 3 p.m. Monday at Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Alma Kimball Mayfield; a daughter, Ruth Mayfield Changuion of Graham, N.C.; two sons, Frank B. Mayfield of Raleigh, N.C., and John A. Mayfield of Durham, N.C.; two granddaughters, Tersia McGarey and Hope Webster, both of Graham, N.C.; a grandson, Jacob Mayfield of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Katherine Short of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Triangle, 1804 MLK Jr. Parkway #112, Durham, N.C. 27707, or to Zion United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton on Sunday, September 2nd, from 7-9 p.m.

Thurman H. Perdue

LOUISBURG -- Thurman Hight Perdue, 92, of Louisburg died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at his home. He was a native of Franklin County and oldest member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served in various capacities. He was a retired farmer, cattleman and businessman and a graduate of Gold Sand High School. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Helen Cottrell Perdue; a daughter, Martha Perdue Peoples; and a son, Dr. Phillip Sterling Perdue.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Murphy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Susie Tharrington Perdue; daughter, Beckie Perdue Stamper and husband, Bob, of Henderson; son, Louis Thurman Perdue and wife, Grace C., of Louisburg; daughter-in-law, Joan S. Perdue of Banner Elk; sisters, Annie Pearl Bailey and Grace Perdue Hayes, both of Louisburg, and Edith Perdue Kearson of Henderson; brother, E. Norris Perdue of Louisburg; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lancaster Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 4272 U.S. 401 Hwy. N., Louisburg, N.C. 27549.

Frances P. Reavis

CHAPEL HILL -- Frances Paschall Reavis, 87, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Britthaven of Chapel Hill after a long period of declining health. She was a Warren County native, the daughter of the late Arthur Paschall and Cora Belle Evans Paschall, and the widow of Carl Harding Reavis.
She lived in Chapel Hill for three years but lived in Greensboro for more than 35 years, where she was employed in retail sales. She was a member of Westover Presbyterian Church.
She was the youngest of seven sisters and two brothers, all deceased.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Orange United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn cemetery in Greensboro.
Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca S. Wilder of Chapel Hill; two half-siblings, John Robert Paschall of Norfolk, Va., and Dorothy Paschall of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the home of Rebecca Wilder.
Viewing and visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Orange United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Airport Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514, or the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, N.C. 27415.

Dorothy E.O. Campbell
WARRENTON -- Dorothy Elizabeth O’Brien Campbell, 77, of Warrenton died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late John and Ada Reavis O’Brian. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Campbell, and her daughter, Patricia Ayscue Matthews.
Surviving are one daughter, Mabel Powell of Afton; two sons, Gary L. Campbell of Afton and Allen Campbell Jr. of Ridgeway; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Providence United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Bernice C. Dow

CREEDMOOR -- Bernice Christenbury Dow, 70, of 215 N. Peachtree St., died Monday Sept. 3, 2001, at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late John Herbert Christenbury and Cordie Clopton Merritt.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was medically retired.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Carolina Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Mark Tilley.
Surviving are three daughters, Starr Wade of Durham, Joanne Cifers of Greensboro and Patricia Ayscue of Holly Ridge; half sister, Janet Dayson of Garner; seven brothers, Steve Christenbury and Ronnie Christenbury, both of Anderson, S.C., John Christenbury, Richard Christenbury, James Christenbury, Kenny Christenbury, all of Roanoke Rapids, David Christenbury of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the funeral at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

David K. Hughes

HENDERSON -- David Kirk Hughes, 41, of 1105 Hargrove St., Henderson, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001. He was a Vance County native and the son of Rose Wilson Hughes of Henderson and the late Jack Hertford Hughes Sr.
He was a disabled carpenter and attended Victory Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Victory Baptist Church by the Rev. Ricky Easter. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a sister, Lynette H. Grissom of Henderson; a brother, Jack H. Hughes Jr. of Henderson; and his material grandmother, Selene Bowes Chandler of Roxboro.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they are at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jonathan Macklin, Steve Hughes, Randy Cloninger, Kenneth Wilson, Ricky Reavis, Jimmy Richardson, Johnnie Ausborn and Art Hughes.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church, P.O. Box 592 Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Ray Pelletier Sr.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Ray Pelletier Sr., 56, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2001 at Nash General Hospital. He was born June 3, 1945 in Peabody, Massachusetts, to the late Henry and Emma Birarellie Pelletier. Ray loved to listen to and collect old records. He worked at Winn-Dixie for 18 years, and then went to work at Bill Rowe and Montgomery Wards.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Brenda Newman Pelletier, daughter of Raymond Newman of Kittrell; one daughter, Amy Elizabeth Pelletier of the home; one son, Ray Pelletier Jr. of Rocky Mount; and one brother, George Pelletier of Florida.
Visitation will be Monday, September 3, 2001 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Bowling Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Bowling Funeral Home with Pastor John Sessoms officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
Arrangements are by Bowling Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, N.C. 27804.
