STOVALL -- Donna Tillotson Pinon, 56, of 4107 Stovall Road, Stovall, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Charlie Sanford Tillotson, Sr. and Thonton Irene Elliott Tillotson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in Sunset Gardens by the Rev. John W. Yount.
Surviving are her husband, Celestino Gueterz “George” Pinon; two daughters, Brenda Sauls Young of Angier and Angela Watson Ruiz of Oxford; a son, Carlton Amos Sauls of Oxford; two sisters, Clara T. Matthews of Henderson and Ruth T. Smith of San Jose, Calif.; three brothers, C.S. Tillotson of Bullock, William C. Tillotson of Henderson and Douglas M. Tillotson of Kansas City, Miss.; her stepmother, Irene H. Tillotson of Stovall; a stepsister, Margaret Ayscue Perkins; and three grandchildren.
The family received friends from 3 to 3:45 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they were at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers were Dwight McClure, Mark Tillotson, Justin Cash, Chuck Tillotson, Daniel Tillotson, Jack Tillotson, Joe Sears and Juan Salinas.

Mary C. Spruill
WARRENTON -- Mary C. Spruill, 64, of the Grove Hill community, Warrenton, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Chapel Baptist Church in Hollister. The Rev. Hedgepeth, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are three sons, Larry Spruill, Michael Spruill and Patrick Spruill, all of Warrenton; one daughter, Evelyn Atkins of Durham; two granddaughters; her father, Otis Copeland of Arcola; and two brothers, Sidney Ray Copeland of Arcola and Archie Copeland of Warrenton.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Willie L. Daniel
OXFORD -- Willie L. Daniel, 84, of E.E. Toney Rest Home, Oxford, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, in Granville Medical Center after several years of declining health. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late James M. and Mollie Currin Daniel.
He was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 14th Armored Division of Gen. George S. Patton’s 3rd Army during the European campaign. He was wounded in action in Belgium on Dec. 24, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, five Battle Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed at Welcome Service Station in Oxford from 1945 until 1964. He then became associated with John Penn Motel of Oxford until his retirement in 1985.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by Dr. Jim W. Whitehead. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, William L. Daniel Jr. of Raleigh and John Russell Daniel of Claudville, Va.; two sisters, Nellie Dickerson and Helen Currin, both of Oxford; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lanier Daniel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 944, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held one hour before the services.

WASHINGTON -- Wilbert Manson, 46, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Vance County, has died.

DURHAM -- Helen McClain of 1808 Bradford Circle died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Trenton, N.J.

Joseph W. O’Neal
WARRENTON -- Joseph Wayne O’Neal, 37, of Warrenton died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital after an extended illness.
He attended Victory Christian School and was affiliated with the Warrenton Church of God.
Surviving are his parents, James E. O’Neal and Patsy Jane King O’Neal; one brother, Greg Allen O’Neal of the home; and his grandfather, James Pettis King of Norlina.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Fairview cemetery by the Rev. William W. Britt.
The family will receive friends at any time at the residence on Limer Town Road.

Emma G. Snead
HENDERSON -- Emma Mae Griffin Snead, 97, formerly of 980 N. Piney Grove Road, Manson, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Buffalo Junction, Va., and the daughter of the late Elihue Franklin and Christine Wilkinson Griffin. She was the widow of Lewis Bailey Snead Sr.
She was a retired co-owner and operator of the old Snead’s Bakery in Warrenton. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Charles M. Cook.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine S. Baker of Lompoc, Calif., and Dorothy S. Talley of Manson; a sister, Lelia S. Brocato of Birmingham, Ala.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Lewis B. Snead Jr.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Ed and Dot Talley, 980 N. Piney Grove Road, Manson.

NEW YORK — Mary Alice Spencer, 81, of New York, formerly of Vance County, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, in Woodhull Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Adolphus Kearney and Maude Holden Kearney. She was the widow of Ulysses Spencer.
She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in New York for more than 50 years and served on the deaconess board and as treasurer. She also was acting president of the North Carolina State Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Roland Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Isaac Thomas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lila Gooch of North Carolina.
Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family.

LITTLETON -- Funeral services for Robert Leroy Dunston, 68, of 554 Bacon Road will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home Chapel, 215 East Main St., Littleton. The Rev. Linda Foster will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Bonds family cemetery, Bacon Road, Littleton.
Sylvia D. Young
OXFORD -- Sylvia D. Young, 88, of 715 College St. died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center. She was a native of Warren County and the daughter of the late Frank E. Young Sr. and Winnie Mae Bell Young.
She was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church and was retired from Union National Bank after 45 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Gala Collins. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving is her sister, Ardyce Young Clark of Oxford.

Viola Glover
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Viola Glover, 95, of 931 Jefferson St. died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001. She was born on June 20, 1906, in Henderson and was the daughter of the late Ambrose David Glover and Mollie Bobbitt Glover.
A graduate of Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, she was a career employee of the region’s public schools and served as principal of Rosemary Elementary School for 20 years until her retirement in 1968.
As devoted to her church as she was to the pupils entrusted to her, she was a faithful member of the Rosemary United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for some 60 years and was a regular attendee until her final illness.
She was a member of various organizations relating to her profession and was a charter member of the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Memorial services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hermon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Jenkins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Rosemary Methodist Church, 900 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids, N.C. 27870.

Larry T. Roberson Jr.
HENDERSON -- Larry Thomas “Tee” Roberson Jr., 22, of 61 Renn Lane died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Larry Thomas and Carolyn Smith Roberson of Henderson.
He was an employee of Maaco Auto Body Shop in Raleigh, where he was shop manager, and attended Freedom Life Church of God.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Freedom Life Church of God by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Ellen Brooke Roberson and Cianna McKinsey Roberson, both of Henderson; one son, Joshua Scott Roberson of Henderson; his fiancée, Candice Watson Stokes; three sisters, Stephanie Orr, Sherie Matthews and Chris Matthews, all of Henderson; one brother, Charles Orr Jr. of Henderson; and his maternal grandparents, Walter and Joyce Smith of Nokesville, Va., and Bessie M. Newman of Henderson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home at 61 Renn Lane.

WARRENTON -- Annie Laura Short Gottschalk, 84, of Rt. 2, Warrenton, died Saturday at Community Memorial Healthcenter. Mrs. Gottschalk was a Warren County native born March 4, 1917, to the late Ed Short and Millie Duke Short.
She was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church and retired owner and operator of the Beauty Box in Warrenton.
The Revs. Joe Mullins and Tinny Parrish will conduct funeral services 11 a.m. Monday at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Leland D. Gottschalk of the home; one daughter, Donna G. Kirkland and husband Charles F. Kirkland of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; one grandson, Charles F. Kirkland Jr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Wilbert Manson, 46, of Washington, formerly a Vance County native, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Washington. He was the son of the late Otis and Callie Manson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Concord Baptist Church by the Rev. S.E. Blalock. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sisters, Mary E. Johnson and Patricia A. Manson, both of Washington, and Mary Rados of Hillside, N.J.; and one brother, Joe Bullock of Alabama.

Blevin ‘Sid’ Proffitt
OXFORD -- Blevin “Sid” Proffitt, 81, of 6159 Private School Road died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Heritage Meadows Adult Care. He was a native of Clay County, Ky., and the son of the late Wilburn and Elizabeth Proffitt.
He was of the Baptist faith.
No visitation or services are planned at this time.
Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Smith of Oxford and Frances Mullins of London, Ky., and one brother, George “Bill” Proffitt of Lida, Ky.

MACON -- Nettie Lynch Alston, 86, of Macon, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.

CROSTON, MD. -- Mary Windley Ballard, 78, of Croston, Md., died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in Severna Park, Md. She was a native of Henderson and the daughter of the late William H. Windley and Mabel Ricks.
She was married to the late Leslie Ballard Jr. for 55 years, and was a teacher for the A.A. School System for 28 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Harundale Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. James G. Kirk. Interment will follow at Maryland Veterans cemetery, Crownsville in Crownsville, Md.
Surviving are two sons, David F. Ballard of Pasadena, Md., and Leslie Ballard III of Glen Burnie, Md.; one daughter, Roslyn Cassell of Glen Burnie, Md.; one brother, William Windley Jr. of Mt. Airy; one sister, Katherin Windley of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the New Hope Granville Baptist Church where she served as a senior missionary and senior choir member.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the New Hope Granville Baptist Church by the Rev. James Isaac III and Elder Anthony Gregory. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving is one sister, Magnolia Hawley of Oxford.
