Alpheus J. Oakley

WARRENTON -- Alpheus J. Oakley, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Ruffin Royster

DURHAM -- Ruffin Royster, 76, of 2422 Landis Drive, Durham, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Treyburn Nursing and Retirement Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Steril Royster and Ermma Bowman Royster.
He was a member of the St. Matthew Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday at St. Matthew Baptist Church by the Rev. Arthur Everette and Minister Ida Black. Burial was held in the church cemetery.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.

Robert E. Gooch

STEM -- Robert E. Gooch, 87, of 201 Sunset St., died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Triangle Hospice at the Meadowlands, Hillsborough. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Joel L. and Minnie Wheeler Gooch.
He was a member of Stem United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Grace Dill. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are two sons, Bobby Gooch of Butner and Wallace E. Gooch of Stem; one sister, Josephine G. Hicks of Durham; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 10, Stem, N.C. 27581 or to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King Pkwy., Durham, N.C. 27707.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Gooch, 108 Gooch St. in Stem.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Sallie S. Ivory

WARRENTON -- Sallie Shearin Ivory, 93, of the Vaughan community, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Guardian Care Nursing Center in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greater Ashley Chapel Baptist Church in Vaughan by the Rev. Milton Jones, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Clark and Clara Robinson, both of Durham, and Jessie Terry of Vaughan; three sons, Eddie and William Ivory, both of Baltimore, Md., and Maurice Ivory of the home; 39 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth Hunter of Richmond, Va., and Alice Hendricks of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Cynthia D. Kelly

BURLINGTON -- Cynthia Dianne Kelly, 28, of Burlington, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, in an auto accident in Greensboro. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of George and Fannie Terry Kelly.
She was a graduate of Northern Vance High School in 1991, served in the U.S. Air Force and after returning home she attended Vance-Granville Community College and was most recently attending Alamance County Community College for a nursing career.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Charlie Leath. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Keyona Kelly, Jasmin Whittley and Jamese Kelly of the home; her parents, George and Fannie Mae Terry Kelly of Henderson; one sister, Cecilia Kelly of Burlington; three brothers, Quintin Kelly of Gibsonville, Derrick Mayfield of Henderson and Seneca Allen of Oxford; grandmother, Mary Pettiford Kelly of the Williamsboro community.
Viewing will be held today at the funeral home from 12 p.m. until taken to the church one hour before the service at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her parents, 351 Randy Yancey Lane in the Middleburg community.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Sylvia K. Mitchell

HENDERSON -- Sylvia Kerley Mitchell, age 63, a resident of 1602 Bane Avenue, died Tuesday morning in a local nursing home.
She was a native of Franklin County and was the daughter of Ladie Barnes Kerley Daniel of Henderson and the late Leonard Ralph Kerley Sr. and was the widow of William Donald Mitchell.
She was a retired employee of Murdock Center in Butner. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church, where she kept the nursery, and was a member of Central Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, worked in the Nursery Deptartment, and was head of the Prayer Chain. She was a volunteer at Maria Parham Hospital and was a former member of Aglow.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Central Baptist Church by the Rev. Alan McAlister. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by four daughters, Karen M. Watson and husband, Clay, of Henderson, Donna M. Thompson and husband, Dennis, of Elkin, Maureen M. Phillips and husband, Don, of Florence, and Joyce M. Parrish and husband, Keith, of Henderson; one son, Donald Wayne Mitchell and wife, Holly, of Henderson; one sister, Faye K. Moss of Kittrell; and two brothers, Ralph Kerley of Kittrell and Ronald B. Kerley of Henderson; 10 grandchildren, Sonia Soles, David Harris II, Jessica Harris, Hugh Phillips, Brandon Watson, Carl Parrish, Taylor Thompson, Joshua Parrish, John Phillips and Cody Ryan Mitchell.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be David Harris, Hugh Phillips, Brandon Watson, Carl Parrish, Jeff Short and Solon Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 5005 L.B.J. Freeway Suite 250, Dallas, Texas 75244.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Ethel G. Moore

RALEIGH -- Ethel Glass Moore, 92, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at Cambridge Hills of Raleigh.
Surviving are her son, Thomas C. Moore, Jr. and wife, Betty, of Chincoteague, Va.; daughters, Kathryn Dena Moore, of Raleigh, and Barbara Jean M. Madigan and husband, Frank, of Henderson; grandchildren, David Madigan, Tracy S. Madigan, Paul J. Madigan, Michael Moore, Kay M. Carey, Christopher Moore, Benjamin Moore, and Kelly Ingram; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cary Moore in 1981; daughter-in-law, Wayne Moore in 1987; and granddaughter, Ashley Mogilnicki in 1987.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 13th at 1 p.m. at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, with burial to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home -- 600 St. Mary’s Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Wake County -- 1300 St. Mary’s Street -- Raleigh, N.C. 27605.

Cleo C. Munn

HENDERSON -- Cleo Casper Munn, age 78, a resident of 1705 S. Garnett Street, died Monday at her home. She was a native of Johnston Co. and was the daughter of the late Willie Herbert and Maude Moore Casper and the widow of Alex Munn. She was a retired employee of the former Alford’s Office Supply Co. and was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Dorothy Currin Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by one son, Rodger H. Munn and wife, Nancy Pinnell Munn, of Durham; one sister, June Casper Cates of Garner; two brothers, Colonel Willie Herbert Casper of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Don Wealon Casper of Cary.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Henry Strause, Tony Adams, Dr. Richard Noel, Robert Pirie, Ron Dorsey, David Hicks, Lennie Swanson and Dr. Fred Kirkland.
Arrangements are being handled by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Alpheus J. Oakley

WARRENTON -- Alpheus Jackson Oakley, 68, of Warrenton, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at his residence. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late William V. Oakley and Dora Dixon Oakley.
He was a member of North Warrenton Baptist Church and was a retired employee at Peck Manufacturing Company.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at North Warrenton Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Short. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Fred Powell Jr., David Brannock, Bill Frazier, William King, Earl Campbell, Harvey Paynter and Pee Wee Faulkner.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Jethro B. Turner

WARRENTON -- Jethro Boyd Turner, 90, of the Baltimore Road community, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late William Thomas Turner and Queen Perry Turner.
He was past master of Stone Square Lodge No. 10 Prince Hall Affiliation of Warrenton. He was also a member of Henderson Consistory No. 195 and Imran Temple No. 168.
He was a member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and senior choir member.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Junious Debnam, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Laura Turner of the home; three daughters, Carnette Turner Williams of the home, Rena Mae Webster of Durham and Maxine H. Tucker of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Irene Alston of Chesapeake, Va., Ada Jones of Sewell, N.J., Beulah Alston of Maplewood, N.J., and Arleemah Shakoor of Youngstown, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Service in Warrenton until taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Rena D. Caulder

OXFORD -- Rena Dickerson Caulder, 83, of 600 Newton Road, Raleigh, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Raleigh Community Hospital. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late W. Ottis and Melessia Kearney Dickerson.
She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at West Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Jim Whitehead. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are her daughter, Kay C. Galloway of Wake Forest; a son, Wayne Emminizer of Virginia Beach, Va.; four sisters, Lizzie Hicks, Pearl Hoyle, Evelyn Evans and Beulah Dalton, all of Oxford; two brothers, Bryan Dickerson of Raleigh and Lindsay Dickerson of Durham; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Robert and Evelyn Evans, 800 Williamsboro St., Oxford.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Robert E. Evans

MANSON -- Robert Elma Evans, 74, of 400 Mount Pleasant Church Road died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of Johnnie Evans and Alice Bullock.
He was educated in the Vance County Schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a retired employee of the Henderson Police Department, where he was a custodian for many years.
He also was employed by Watkins-Seynour Warehouse as a distribution truck driver.
He was a member of Morning Star United Holy Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday by Elder Shirley Piercy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Evans; two daughters, Alice E. Burroughs and Beatrice Evans, both of Manson; six sons, Robert Evans Jr. of East Orange, N.J., Jesse Evans of the home, Michael Evans of Manson, Reggie Evans of Richmond, Va., Kenneth Evans of Henderson and Donald Evans of Ridgeway; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Harris of Newark, N.J., and Naomi Hymes and Elder Shirley Piercy, both of Manson; two brothers, Raymond Evans of Manson and Thurman Evans of Henderson; and his stepmother, Mary H. Evans of Oxford.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Garnes Funeral Chapel and other times at the home.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Henderson Police Department.
Active pallbearers will be Samuel Evans, Daryl Hymes, Avery Piercy, Darnell Evans, Raymond Evans Jr., Thurman Evans, Dennis Meadows and Harold Plummer.
Floral bearers will be Linda Bratcher, Laura Turner, Juanita Fogg, Lisa Evans, Bernice Alston, Stephanie White, Joselyn Kearney, Avon Hymes, Wendy Foster, Arelene Plummer, Alice Brown and Mable Hargrove.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Rebecca C. Mangum

OXFORD -- Rebecca “Becky” Currin Mangum, 65, of 1178 U.S. 158 died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, in Durham. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Charles and Beatrice Hobgood Currin. She was the widow of William D. Mangum Jr.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and was retired after teaching the Granville County Schools for more than 35 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her three sons, William D. Mangum III of Statesville, Steve D. Mangum of Durham and Sam C. Mangum of Oxford, and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1170 U.S. 158, or to the American Diabetes. Association, 434 Fayetteville St. Mall, 2 Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, N.C. 27601-1764.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Eloise Newton, 2120 U.S. 158, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Ethel Marrow

HENDERSON -- Ethel Marrow, 84, of the Guardian Care nursing facility died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by Garnes Funeral Services.

Betty G. Royster

HAMPTON, Va. -- Betty Gross Royster died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, in Hampton. She was a native of Asheville.
She was a 1958 graduate of Huntington High School and was a 1960 graduate of Peninsula Business College. She retired in 1993 after 30 years of employment as a federal employee at Fort Eustis, Va. As a retiree, she contributed many hours to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a member of Delta Mu Business Sorority, where she served as treasurer for many years.
Surviving are her husband, Isaac “Ike” Royster (a native of Oxford); two children, Wanda D. Gattison and Jeffrey K. Royster, both of Hampton; three brothers, Joe Banks Jr., James Gross and Albert Gross, all of Hampton; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 830 25th St., Newport News, Va. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive visitors from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th St., Newport News, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross, 4915 W. Mercury Blvd., Newport News, Va. 23605, in memory of Betty Royster.
Local announcements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Thomas H. Sanford

CREEDMOOR -- Thomas H. Sanford, 87, of 2522 U.S. 15, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at his home. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Charlie and Rosa Brooks Sanford.
He was a member of Bullock United Methodist Church, a member of Creedmoor Lodge No. 499 and a retired salesman.
Graveside Masonic services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday in Greene Family cemetery in Stem by Past Master Bobby Hancock.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche Greene Sanford; a son, Richard Lee Sanford of Nashville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Eugene E. Twisdale

HENDERSON -- Eugene Earl Twisdale, 84, of 7599 N.C. 39 North died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Louisburg. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late James Lex and Ella Dixon Twisdale.
He was a retired employee of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association and served as a volunteer fireman in Bunn for more than 50 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church cemetery in Townsville by the Rev. Leon Gupton.
Surviving is one sister, Louise T. Greene of Nashville.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately after the service.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Mr. William H. Duncan

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Memorial services for Mr. William Holt Duncan, 79, formerly of 808 Woodland Drive, Columbia, resident of Lowman Home, White Rock, will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2001, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Reverend J. Fletcher Montgomery. Interment will be held in Fairview cemetery, Warrenton, N.C., on Sunday. The family will be at 808 Woodland Drive in Columbia and requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Richland County Public Library, 1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201, St. Joseph’s Respite Program, 3512 Devine Street, Columbia, S.C. 29205, Columbia Green Inc., 1601 Richland Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201, The Lowman Home, Post Office Box 444, White Rock, S.C. 29177, or the charity of one’s choice. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements locally. Blaylock Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements in North Carolina.
Mr. Duncan died Wednesday, September 12, 2001, in the Providence Hospital. He was born in Elkton, Maryland, the son of the late David Smiley Duncan and Selena Estelle Perkins Duncan. He grew up in Narberth, Pennsylvania, attended the Narberth public schools and Catawba College, and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 2nd Calvary Reconnaissance Group in the European Theater. Mr. Duncan retired from the State newspaper, where he was national advertising manager. He held the same position with The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C. He served as president of the Babcock Center Board and The Advertising Clubs of both Columbia and Raleigh. He also served as president of the Newspaper Advertising Executives Association of the Carolinas and was a master gardener and an active member of Columbia Green. He was a founding member of St. Andrews Society of Columbia and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
He was married to the former Lula McCraw Gay of Warrenton, N.C., who survives him. Also surviving are three daughters, Mary Reynolds Duncan of the home, Elizabeth Holt Duncan Powers (Mrs. Paul) of Columbia, McCraw Duncan Cromwell (Mrs. William) of Texas; three granddaughters, Lockey Powers, Kate and Sarah Cromwell; and one sister, Mrs. Charles (Jean Duncan) Rendleman of Columbia, S.C.
