Robert E. Evans

MANSON -- Robert Elma Evans, 74, of 400 Mount Pleasant Church Road died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of Johnnie Evans and Alice Bullock.
He was educated in the Vance County Schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a retired employee of the Henderson Police Department, where he was a custodian for many years.
He also was employed by Watkins-Seynour Warehouse as a distribution truck driver.
He was a member of Morning Star United Holy Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday by Elder Shirley Piercy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Evans; two daughters, Alice E. Burroughs and Beatrice Evans, both of Manson; six sons, Robert Evans Jr. of East Orange, N.J., Jesse Evans of the home, Michael Evans of Manson, Reggie Evans of Richmond, Va., Kenneth Evans of Henderson and Donald Evans of Ridgeway; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Harris of Newark, N.J., and Naomi Hymes and Elder Shirley Piercy, both of Manson; two brothers, Raymond Evans of Manson and Thurman Evans of Henderson; and his stepmother, Mary H. Evans of Oxford.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight in the Garnes Funeral Chapel and other times at the home.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Henderson Police Department.
Active pallbearers will be Samuel Evans, Daryl Hymes, Avery Piercy, Darnell Evans, Raymond Evans Jr., Thurman Evans, Dennis Meadows and Harold Plummer.
Floral bearers will be Linda Bratcher, Laura Turner, Juanita Fogg, Lisa Evans, Bernice Alston, Stephanie White, Joselyn Kearney, Avon Hymes, Wendy Foster, Arelene Plummer, Alice Brown and Mable Hargrove.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

James A. Foster

HAMPTON, Va. -- James Arthur Foster, 75, of Hampton, a Franklin County native, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at his residence. He was the son of the late Johnnie and Sallie Green Foster. He was the widower of Lottie Lee Yarborough.
He was educated in the Franklin County Schools.
He was a member of Haywood Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, James E. Foster of Baltimore and Louis T. Foster and William E. Foster of Henderson; one sister, Louise Alston of Henderson; three brothers, Freddie and Joseph Foster of Henderson and William T. Foster of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Slayter T. Lloyd

OXFORD -- Slayter Tennyson Lloyd, 83, of 110 Peace St. died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. He was the son of Lillie Lloyd.
He was a graduate of Bladen County Training High School. In 1944, he received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.
He retired in 1975 after a 32-year career with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. The Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and the Epsilon Sigma Phi Meritorious Service Award honored his career. As county agricultural agent in Union County, then Granville County, he was a supporter of the 4-H Youth Development Program and the Oxford Men’s Garden Club.
He was a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, where he served as an active and committed member. He was honored by service as a Masonic Mason and member of the Consistory and Shrine.
Surviving are his wife, Lelia Phifer Lloyd; two sons, Kevin Lloyd Sr. of Durham and Slayter L. Lloyd Jr. of Henderson; four grandchildren; and two sons, Julius Stegall of Raleigh and Paul George Laursen of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, 322 Linden Ave., Oxford, by the Rev. Donnie Jones. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
The family will receive visitors 30 minutes before services at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Granville County 4-H Camp Fund, payable to the County of Granville, or forward memorial contributions to the Granville County Extension Service, 103 Wall St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Ethel R. Marrow

HENDERSON -- Ethel Reavis Marrow, 84, of the Guardian Care nursing facility died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Joe and Willie Williams Reavis.
She was educated in the Vance County Schools and was a member of Davis Chapel Baptist Church, where the funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today by the Rev. Charles Turrentine. Burial will follow in the Alpha Omega cemetery.
Surviving are two nieces and one nephew.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Eardine C. Watkins

OXFORD -- Eardine Cooper Watkins, 75, of 3037 Watkins-Wilkerson Road died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
She was a retired dietary technician at J.F. Webb High School. She was a member of Huntsville Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Huntsville Baptist Church by the Rev. R.N. Holloway. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Helen White of Oxford and Antoinette Braswell of Charlotte; three sisters, Ella Hawkins of Fort Chester, N.Y., Fannie Jones of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Annie Hawley of Oxford; one brother, Willie Cooper of Oxford; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Mabel H. Foster
HENDERSON -- Mabel Hodge Foster, 67, of 508 Powell St. died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Margaret L.M. Gentry

ROXBORO -- Margaret Lee Mooney Gentry, 78, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, in Roxboro Nursing Center after an extended illness.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Mill Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Martin Hall.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and other times at the home of Dewey and Patsy Wilson, 1455 Gentry Dunkley Road, Roxboro.
Arrangements were by Strickland Funeral Home of Roxboro.

Annie H.L. Gholson

HENDERSON -- Annie Herbert Lamb Gholson of 128 Edgewood Drive died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by J.M. White Funeral Home.

Estelle F. Roberson

HENDERSON -- Estelle Faulkner “Kookie” Roberson, 87, of 1375 Ruin Creek Road died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro. She was the widow of James Allen Roberson.
She was a member of West End Baptist Church and the Open Door Philathea Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the J.M. White Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home, 1375 Ruin Creek Road.
Other arrangements will be announced by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

James H. Valentine

WARRENTON -- James Henry Valentine, 58, of Ridgeway died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late John Valentine and Josephine Suite Valentine.
The family will meet with friends at the home of his sister, Louise Clark.
Arrangements will be announced by Brown’s Funeral Services.

Mabel E.H. Foster
HENDERSON -- Mabel Elizabeth Hodge Foster, 67, of 508 Powell St. died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Norman and Lucy Williams Hodge.
She was educated in the Warren County public schools and earned a bachelor of art degree from Shaw University in Raleigh.
She worked 29 years at Franklin-Vance-Warren Headstart as a teacher and teacher supervisor
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ridgeway Baptist Church by the W.T. Ramey. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her 10 children, John Hodge Sr. and Sherri Alston, both of Durham, Fred Alston and Lucille Marie Foster, both of Henderson, Lucy Younger of Carrolltown, Md., Lester Fleming and Keon Foster, both of Greensboro, Cecilia Foster of Soul City, Carrie Foster of Williamsboro and Juanita Wilkerson of Raleigh; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The body will be on view Monday from 11 a.m. until taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Annie Herbert Gholson

HENDERSON -- Annie Herbert Gholson, age 93, a resident of 128 Edgewood Dr., died Friday, September 14, 2001. She was a native of Vance Co. and was the daughter of the late Annie Olivia Hyman Lamb and George Charles Lamb. She was the widow of Thornton Patton Gholson Sr., a prominent attorney in Henderson for many years. Mrs. Gholson was a lifetime member of the Church of the Holy Innocents, where she was active in the Alter Guild, the Episcopal Church Women and served on the Vestry. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in America, the Henderson Garden Club, Junior Tuesday Club, where she was a past president, and various other clubs. She was also very active as a volunteer at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 17, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Innocents by the Rev. Daniel Barker, the Rev. Leland Smith and Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow at Elmwood cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia G. O’Harrow and husband Ralph E. O’Harrow of Fayetteville and Matilda Lamb Gholson of Henderson; one son, Thornton Patton Gholson Jr. of Henderson; two grandchildren, Anne O’Harrow Saleeby and Ralph E. “Ted” O’Harrow Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jeff Alexander Saleeby and Nicholas Patton Saleeby.
The family will receive friends today from 2 until 3:30 in The Great Hall at the Church of the Holy Innocents. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Donald Seifert, Dr. Reginald Tucker, Robert Herford, Bennett Perry, D. Boyd Kimball, A.G. Borden, Dr. S. Malone Parham, R.G. Young Jr., R.G. Kittrell and William Mast.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Church of the Holy Innocents, 210 S. Chestnut St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Marvin G. Keith

CREEDMOOR -- Marvin G. Keith, 68, of 1428 Boyce Bridge Road died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was a Wake County native and the son of the Elbert L. and Vallie Keith Keith.
He was a member of Union Baptist Church and was retired from the maintenance department of the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Revs. Robert Oliver and Gary Brummitt. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Eunice Jackson Keith; two daughters, Sandra K. Forsythe of Creedmoor and Cheryl K. Crews of Oxford; a son, Linwood G. Keith of Creedmoor; three sisters, Estelle Newby and Kate Wheeler, both of Creedmoor, and Ovelle Clements of Durham; three brothers, Bill Keith and Cecil Keith, both of Creedmoor, and Ullyses Keith of Durham; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Durham Chapter, 3500 Westgate Drive, Suite 201, Durham, N.C. 27707.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Stephen Kersey

WARRENTON -- Stephen Kersey, 62, of 4277 Warrenton Road died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at his residence

Estelle F. Roberson

HENDERSON -- Estelle Faulkner “Kookie” Roberson, age 87, a resident of 1375 Ruin Creek Road, died Thursday night at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro.
She was a native of Granville County and was the daughter of the late Benjamin Lee and Mary Ann MacPhail Faulkner, and widow of James Allen Roberson. She was a homemaker and former bookkeeper at the Dabney Drive 66 Service Station. She was also a member of the West End Baptist Church and the Open Door Philathea Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the J.M. White Funeral Home by the Rev. Edwin Clay Thornton. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Roberson and Joan R. Adams and husband Jim of Greensboro; two sons, Stanley Allen Roberson and wife Ruth and W. Steve Roberson and wife Edie, both of Midlothian, Va.; eight grandchildren, Kenneth Allen Roberson and wife Betty-Anne, Steven H. Roberson and wife Virginia, Debbie Comer and husband Brad, Sally Anne Waldrop and husband Robby, Stephanie Joan Neese and husband Charles, S. Christopher Roberson, Scott Roberson and Courtney Elizabeth Roberson; and sixteen great-grandchildren, Melissa, Jana, Zachary, Luke, Christine, Kendi, Megan and Molly Roberson, Ashleigh, Emily and Olivia Comer, Sara and Charles Neese Jr., G.R., Jake and Conner Waldrop; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home.
Serving as pallbearers will be: David Ellington, Jim Ellington, Frank Faulkner, James I. “Pete” Faulkner, Dean Thornton, William E. “Buck” Norwood, Bobby Ellington and James Russell.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Robert Jerome Faucette

HENDERSON -- Robert Jerome Faucette, age 71, a resident of 1418 Reservoir Street, died Sunday at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Granville County and was the son of Zora Burchette Faucette of Oxford and the late Alton Faucette. He was the widower of Ruth Dean Faucette. He was a lifelong member of the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Living By Faith Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the South Henderson Pentecostal
Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and the Rev. Henry Reese. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Shirley F. LeRoy of High Point and Betty F. Collier of Henderson; one son, Robert Jerome “Bobby” Faucette, Jr., of Henderson; and one grandchild.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White
Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Morris Batton, R.C. Creech, Wayne Vick, Ronnie
Lassiter, Bobby Parrish, Jerry Patterson, James Pendergrass, Jack Pernell, and Buck Rivers. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Living By Faith Sunday School Class of the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 2286, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Maryland L. Perry

RICHMOND -- Maryland Lee Perry, of Richmond, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Britthaven in Louisburg.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Service Inc.

Nannie E. Harris

OXFORD -- Nannie Elizabeth Harris, 84, of 4091 Belltown Road, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the Durham Regional Hospital.
She was a member of the New Hope Granville Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Benjamin Lee Harris of Oxford; one daughter, Gracie McCallom of Greensboro; a foster daughter, Brianica Doniel of the home; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the New Hope Granville Baptist Church by the Rev. James Isaac III. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received visitors on Friday at Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.
