Ann M. Gaskill

WARRENTON -- Ann Mabry Gaskill, died on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. Born on April 18, 1927, Ann was a twin daughter of the late Sallie Rose and Joseph Duke Mabry of Henderson.
She married Thomas Gaskill on Dec. 26, 1957, and they lived the 44 years of their marriage in Warrenton, N.C.
She retired in 1989 after 31 years with Carolina Power and Light. At the time of her death, Ann was a member of the Warrenton Presbyterian Church, was treasurer of the Warrenton Lioness Club, and had been an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. A graduate of Middleburg High School, Ann attended Louisburg College.
Ann is survived by her husband, Tom Gaskill; her sister, Rose Mabry Jackson; her brother-in-law, Thurman Stone; her sister-in-law, Edith Mabry; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.
A graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Orval Wintermute on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview cemetery in Warrenton.
Memorial donations may be made to the Warrenton Presbyterian Church.

Stephen Kersey Jr.

HENDERSON -- Stephen Kersey Jr., 62, of 4277 Warrenton Road, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her residence. She was a Warren County native and the son of Mamie Johnson Kersey and the late Stephen Kersey Sr.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Burchett Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Charlie Leath. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mamie Kersey-Fisher, Shelia Marrow, Stephanie Marrow; seven sons, Kenneth Kersey, Percell Kersey, Randolph Kersey, Anthony Kersey, Kirby Kersey, Carlton Marrow, Durwood Marrow; three brothers, George Kersey, Elane Kersey, June Kersey; six sisters, Mary K. Ricks, Clara Kersey, Thersa K. Davis, Minnie Kersey, Yvonne K. Jordan, Janet K. Davis; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The body will be on view until taken to the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Emma Martinez

WARRENTON -- Emma Martinez, 78, of Warrenton, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Cora B. Rucker

HENDERSON -- Cora Bell Rucker, 68, of 728 Fred Royster Road, Henderson, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

John ‘Jack’ W. Sanders, Jr.

GREENSBORO -- John “Jack” W. Sanders, Jr. of 2813 Spring House Place, died September 10, 2001 at his home after a brief illness at age 78.
The funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Chapel, 515 N. Elm Street, Greensboro. The family received friends after the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Sanders was born in Camden, South Carolina, the son of John W. Sanders and Thelma Cannon Sanders who preceded him in death.
He attended high school in Henderson, N.C. where he was president of his senior class. He earned a bachelor of science degree at Clemson University and a master of business administration degree from UNC-Greensboro. He began his career as a textile engineer with Dan River Mills and was later a textile consultant with Kurt Salmon Associates. He later worked for Madison Throwing Co. and then Cone Mills Corporation, as head of capital projects accounting, until his retirement.
He was a longstanding member and usher at Christ United Methodist Church, member of the Greensboro Kiwanis Club, and Starmount Forest Country Club.
He served as a lieutenant and later captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, in France, Germany, and Austria.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Patricia Little Sanders, of the home; children, Patricia Sanders Brown of Greensboro and John W. Sanders III, Md. of Wilmington; brother, Robert C. Sanders of West Palm Beach, Fla.; son-in-law, Steve Brown of Greensboro; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Cunningham Sanders of Wilmington; stepdaughters, Karen Little Cannon of Greensboro and Cindy Little Schneider of Holland, Mich.; stepson, Clay Little of Florence, S.C.; four grandchildren and six step-grandchildren, by whom he was dearly beloved. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Louise Singley Sanders.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.

Marie T. Smith

OXFORD -- Marie Taylor Smith, 74, of 7035 Hwy. 15, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Durham Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Taylor and Susie Comer Taylor.
She received her education in the public schools of Granville County.
Surviving are her husband, Marshall Smith of the home; three daughters, Libert Grissom, Emma Hargrove and Margie Smith; one sister, Alice Henderson; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 12 p.m. Monday at Betts & Son Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Anthony Boyd. Burial followed in the Meadowview Memorial Park.
Arrangements were by Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.

Emma Thomas

NORLINA -- Emma Thomas, 73, of Norlina, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whites Grove Christian Church in Norlina by the Rev. John Pugh, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Annie George of Norlina; one son, William H. Hunter of Manson; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Thomas of the home.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Cora B. Rucker

HENDERSON -- Cora Bell Rucker, 68, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital following a brief illness. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Robert and Josephine Gill.
She dedicated her life to Jehovah’s Witness in 1971 and was a cook with the Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving are her husband, George Rucker of the home; four daughters, Nancy Alexander of the home, Michelle Dunston of Henderson, Laura Rucker of the home and Vanester R. Davis of Raleigh; two sons, George Rucker Jr. of Henderson and Jonathan Rucker of Wall Kill, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Twiggs, Nannie Gill and Alice Gill; two brothers, Richard Gill and Jerry Gill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Henderson with discourse by Daniel Nyitel. Interment will follow in the Blacknall cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 728 Fred Royster Road.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.
The body and will lie in state one hour prior to the services at the Hall.

Maryland L. Perry

RICHMOND, Va. -- Maryland Lee Perry, 71, of Richmond, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Facility in Louisburg. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Samuel and Iola Perry.
He was a resident and was employed in Richmond for over 30 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Garnes Funeral Chapel by Dr. R.M. Burnette. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Irene P. Crenshaw of Henderson; one brother, Bennie Perry of Henderson; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 484 Merriman St., Henderson.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Pfc. James H. Valentine

WARRENTON -- Pfc. James Henry Valentine, 58, of Ridgeway, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late John Valentine and Josephine Suite Valentine.
He joined Manson Baptist Church at an early age and also attended Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ.
Following graduation from John R. Hawkins High School, at the age of 18 he moved to Newark, N.J., where he attended college for two years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 9, 1964, and received a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, and was recognized as an expert (rifle) marksman. After receiving an honorable discharge on July 22, 1966, he worked as a car salesman, a furniture salesman, a hospital employee and in other positions before returning to Warren County in 1993. He was employed for two years at the Perdue-Holtzman Farm until he became ill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Burchette’s Chapel United Church of Christ in Manson by the Rev. Charlie Leath. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Louise Clark of Ridgeway and Fannie Weatherton of Newark, N.J.; and four brothers, Alexander Valentine of Ridgeway, John Valentine and George Lee Valentine, both of Newark, N.J., and Josephine Valentine of Macon.
The family will meet with friends at the home of his sister, Louise Clark.
The body will be on view at the funeral home beginning today and will lie in state at the church for one hour before the service.
Arrangements were by Brown’s Funeral Services Inc.

B.G. ‘Bear’ Dodson

HENDERSON -- Billy Gwen “Bear” Dodson, 43, of 311 Washout Road died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of West Palm Beach, Fla., and was the son of Dorothy Scott Brown of Fayetteville, Tenn., and the late Billy Jefferson Dodson.
He was self-employed and was a veteran of the Vietname War and the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a member of the I.D.P.A. and was president of the Vance County Radio Emergency Associated Communications Team (REACT), which he led to New York this week to aid in the response to the World Trade Center disaster.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jim Curtis.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Frances Currin Dodson; one daughter, A.J. Dodson of Daisytown, Pa.; two sons, B.J. Dodson of Lewisburg, Tenn., and William Dodson of Daisytown, Pa.; one sister, Diane R. Bryson of Tullahoma, Tenn.; and his maternal grandmother, Gracie C. Scott of Lynchburg, Tenn.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of his brother-in-law, Paul Currin, at 3633 Southerland Mill Road.
Pallbearers will be members of the Vance County REACT.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vance County REACT, P.O. Box 317, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

OXFORD -- Elizabeth Fields, 85, of 108 Daniel St. died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Oxford Manor.

James Kearney

HENDERSON -- James Kearney, 68, of 215 Hawkins Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Oxford Manor.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Richard E. Kelly

LAKE GASTON -- Richard Edwin Kelly, 49, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Betty J.P. Paulson

HENDERSON -- Betty Jane Perdue Paulson, 66, of 2599 Warrenton Road died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Linwood Compton and Bessie B. Myrick Perdue.
She was a housewife and later worked at Maria Parham Hospital, from which she was retired. She also was a member of the Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Cokesbury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael E. Rocheleau. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Tracy Paulson Twisdale of Henderson; two sons, Scott C. Paulson of Henderson and D. Randall “Randy” Paulson of Cary; two sisters, Mary Ann Cleaton and Linda Cole, both of Henderson; and four grandsons.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Cleaton, Michael Cleaton, Gary King, Patrick Carrol, Steven McCann, Daniel Reynolds, Jason Reynolds and Mark Ellis.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of North Carolina, 800 St. Mary’s St., Raleigh, N.C. 27605.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Alex Williams Jr.

HENDERSON -- Alex Williams Jr., 64, a native of Vance County and a resident of Philadelphia, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in Philadelphia.
Funeral services will be delayed because of the cutbacks in air traffic.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Wesley H. Brooks

HENDERSON -- Wesley Hall Brooks, 81, of 390 Bellewood Drive died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, in a local nursing home. He was a Person County native and the son of the late David Stokes Brooks Sr. and Banna James Brooks.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and a graduate of Elon College and did undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Men’s Sunday School Class and was a former member of the Board of Trustees. He assisted in organizing the History Room of First United Methodist Church and was a 20-year volunteer for the Maria Parham Hospital Host Club. He also was a former member of the Henderson Rotary Club and the Henderson Civitan Club.
He was a retired manager of the state Employment Security Commission in Henderson.
Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Burchwood cemetery in Roxboro by the Rev. Charles M. Cook.
Surviving are his wife, Myra Huff Brooks; one daughter, Banna Brooks of Henderson; and one brother, James C. Brooks of Roxboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trustee Endowment Fund of First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Charlie J. Bullock

HENDERSON -- Funeral services for the Rev. Charlie J. Bullock, 94, of 530 Carver School Road have been changed to 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Church in Kittrell instead of Morning Star United Holiness Church. Burial will be held in the St. Delight United Holiness Church cemetery in Drewry.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Samuel E. Burwell

HENDERSON -- Samuel Edward Burwell, 47, of 718 Parham St. died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.

James E. Hargrove

WARRENTON -- James E. Hargrove, 79, of Warrenton died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg.
