HENDERSON -- Martha Harrison Hunt, 73, of 544 Murphy Road died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Lawrenceville, Va., and the daughter of the late Elton Mallory and Lora Evelyn Allen Harrison. She was the widow of John O. Hunt.
She was a retired employee of Peck Manufacturing Co.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Carey Baptist Church cemetery by the Revs. A.B. Greene Jr. and Frank Sossamon.
Surviving are a sister, Sarah Virginia Ross of Henderson, and a brother, James Robert Harrison of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 544 Murphy Road.
Flowers are omitted. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Clarence Martin

WARRENTON -- Clarence Martin, 73, of Route 3, Warrenton, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Pattie H. Moore

HENDERSON -- Pattie Harris Moore, 83, of 513 E. Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, in Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Zollie Coffer and Lula Ayscue Harris.
She was a homemaker. She was a former member of Grace Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Va., and more recently of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Henderson.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Timothy J. Burgess.
Surviving are her husband, James Russell Moore; a daughter, Cathy M. Gatling of Raleigh; a sister, Odell H. Moody of Henderson; two brothers, William J. “Bill” Harris of Epsom and Macy Harris of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately after the service.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23286.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Mildred T. Ayscue
HENDERSON -- Mildred Travis Ayscue, 73, of 480 Clements Road, Middleburg, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late James Benjamin and Jessie Mae Privette Travis. She was the widow of Brooks Parham Ayscue.
She was a homemaker and a former employee of Americal. She was a member of Harris Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. William Wagner. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Pam A. King of Middleburg; five sons, James Ayscue, Mike Ayscue, Bruce Ayscue and Donald Ayscue, all of Middleburg, and Brooks Ayscue Jr. of Henderson; four sisters, Willie Sue T. Lightell and Bett T. Nix, both of Henderson, Shirley T. Blackmer of Michigan and Virginia Mae T. Taylor of Florida; a half-sister, Rose Tanner of Henderson; two brothers, Vincent Travis of Henderson and James Travis of Clarksville, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Pam King, 420 Clements Road, Middleburg.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Andy West, Tracey Ayscue, Tim Harris, Ted Harris, Charles Ellis, Casey Orr, Gar Bailey Ayscue, Jesse James Ayscue and Rocky Ayscue.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

George W. Chesnutt

CEDAR POINT -- George William Chesnutt, age 1, died Sept. 22, 2001, at Carteret General Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Swansboro United Methodist Church by the Rev. Randy Innes. Burial will be at a later date.
Surviving are his father, James Warren Chesnutt Jr. of Cedar Point; mother, Tracey Chesnutt of Cedar Point; brother, James Warren “Tripp” Chesnutt III of Cedar Point; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Chesnutt of Washington; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Mangum II of Wilmington; great-grandmother, Ruth Nicholson of Jacksonville; aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. Steven R. Chesnutt; uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Mangum IV of Las Vegas, Nev.; and uncle, James Kearney Mangum of Biloxi, Miss.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to George William Chesnutt Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Swansboro United Methodist Church in Swansboro.
Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home of Swansboro.

James L. Kearney

HENDERSON -- James Linwood Kearney, 67, of 213 Hawkins Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the Oxford Manor rest home in Oxford. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Alex and Annie Mae Alston Kearney.
He served in the U.S. Army, then moved to New Jersey and lived there for more than 30 years. He worked in construction and at Fair Oak Hospital in Summit, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services by the Rev. Saint J. Silver. Burial will be in the Mitchell Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Jetsie Carter Solomon of Henderson; a stepsister, Mary Clark of Durham; and two brothers, Edward J. Kearney and Howard Lee Carter, both of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 213 Hawkins Drive.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Isabella T. Yarborough

HENDERSON -- Isabella Turner Yarborough, 95, of 2074 Julia Ave. died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
She joined St. Paul Christian Church at an early age and later in life joined Red Bud Baptist Church after marriage to the late Deacon James Henry Yarborough in 1941.
She was a pianist for the junior choir, a member of the Missionary Circle, Senior Choir and Deaconess Board, and a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 562.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Red Bud Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. John E. Hall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three stepdaughters, Harriett Wright and Verdie Yarborough, both of Henderson, and Hattie Ballard of Fort Washington, Md.; three stepsons, Albert Yarborough of Capitol Heights, Md., Rufus Yarborough of Henderson and Eddie Yarborough of Centemoriches, N.Y.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2074 Julia Ave., and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Red Bud Baptist Church.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Rosa S. Adcock
OXFORD -- Rosa Saunders Adcock, 76, of 220 1/2 Maple Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Claude and Mary Webster Saunders. She was the widow of Earl H. Adcock.
She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and was retired from JFD Electronics.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by Dr. Jim Whitehead. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary A. Englebright, Virginia A. West and Teresa A. Faucette, all of Oxford, and Shirley A. Oakley of Efland; one son, Edward E. Adcock of Durham; one sister, Lillie Mae Cooke of Louisburg; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Samuel E. Burwell

HENDERSON -- Samuel Edward Burwell, 47, of 718 Parham St., died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was a Warren County native and the son of Anderson Burwell Sr. and the late Verlina Paschall.
He was educated in the Warren and Vance County Public Schools. He was employed as an auto body and paint specialist.
He was a member of the Oak Level United Church of Christ where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Leon White. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his father, Anderson Burwell Sr.; stepmother, Lola P. Burwell of Henderson; three brothers, James Burwell, Anderson Burwell Jr. and John Burwell; four sisters, Lucy B. Merritt, Patty Burwell, Laura B. Owens, all of Henderson, and Shirlina Burwell of Franklinton; nine stepsisters; two stepbrothers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Nicholason, Keley Hayes, Tom Skinner, Irving Bullock, John Jefferson, Eddie Perry, William Terry and Reggie Hunt.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Belle M. Ellington

HENDERSON -- Belle Mitchiner Ellington, 87, a former resident of Bobbitt Road, Kittrell, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Garland Clifton and Mary Nicholson Mitchiner. She was the widow of John Buxton William Ellington.
She was a retired school teacher, and was a member of the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. William M. “Bud” Budzinski.
Surviving are a sister, Mary M. Underhill of Wendell; a brother, William A. Mitchiner of Raleigh; a stepdaughter, Irene E. Brown of Kittrell; a stepson, Harry W. Ellington of Kittrell.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Harry and Emma Ellington, 3710 Bobbitt Road, Kittrell, N.C. 27544.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Plank Chapel United Methodist Church, Building Fund, c/o Miss Mildred Smith, P.O. Box 185, Kittrell, N.C. 27544.

Mildred A. Fletcher

HENDERSON -- Mildred Allen Fletcher, 72, of 128 Parham Road, Henderson, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Thomas Roy and Pearl Bobbitt Allen.
She was a retired employee of Americal Inc. and was a former employee of Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company. She was a member of Carey Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Ray McDonald. Burial will follow in Carey Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Lindberg Fletcher; a son, Charles Stephen “Steve” Fletcher of Henderson; a sister, Jo A. Grice of Raleigh; and two brothers, W. Wallace Allen of Warrenton and Thurman R. Allen of Henderson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thurston R. Allen.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Henry Wynne, Ray Ranes, John Vernon, Jimmy Allgood, Jimmy Lassiter, Dalton Roberts, George Watkins, Ellis Weathers, and Donald Ray Matthews
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Carey Baptist Church, Youth Fund, 1295 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.

Hollie S. Gilliam

OXFORD -- Hollie Samuel Gilliam, 64, of 5574 Tabbs Creek Church Road, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Center. He was the son of the late Frank Gilliam and Mollie Watkins Gilliam.
Surviving are four sisters, Laura G. Mays and Eva G. Elam, both of Oxford, Doris G. Wright and Mary N. Brown, both of Durham; three brothers, James Gilliam of Oxford, Wilbert Gilliam of Baltimore, Md., and Harold Gilliam of East Orange, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Betts & Son Chapel by the Rev. Willie Darby. Burial will follow in the Meadowview Memorial Park.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.

James Hargrove

WARRENTON -- James Hargrove, 79, of Warrenton, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Cooks Chapel Baptist Church in Warren Plains. The Rev. Joseph Cook, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Edward Darnell Hargrove of Warren Plains; one daughter, Mary Ann Hunt of Wise; eight grandchidren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Freddie L. Hargrove of Norlina and Billy Hargrove of Richmond, Va.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Vernon P. Meade

HENDERSON -- Vernon Preston Meade, 76, of 330 S. Franklin St., Apt. D, Wake Forest, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at his home. He was a Montgomery County native and the son of the late James Jerome Meade Sr. and Maude Allen Meade.
He was a retired painter and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the European Theater, including Bari, Italy.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Dougald McLaurin.
Surviving are a sister, Marion Meade Houle of Battle Ground, Washington; two brothers, James Jerome “Jimmy” Meade Jr. of Nashville and Aubrey L. Meade Sr. of Louisburg. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Meade Thigpen, and two brothers, Shelton C. Meade and S.A. “Sam” Meade.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Nicholas Sylvester

OXFORD -- Nicholas Sylvester, 81, of 115 Old Baker St., died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at UNC Hospital. He was a native of Madison, N.J., and a retired city employee of Morristown, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Donnie Jones. Mr. Sylvester will be cremated.
Surviving are one daughter, Susan Harris of the home; one brother, Nicholas Sylvester Jr. of Morristown, N.J.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at the residence. The body will lie in state Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Alex William Jr.

HENDERSON -- Alex Williams Jr., 64, of Philadelphia, Pa., died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in Philadelphia. He was a native of Louisburg and the son of the late Carrie and Alex Williams Sr. He was the widower of Dora Williams.
He was an auto body technician by trade, and a U.S. Marine veteran.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one brother, Elonzo Williams of Chester, Pa.; and one sister, Elnora Montague of Newark, N.J.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson, and other times at the residence of Julia Lemay, 520 Water St.

Christine O. Ramser
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- Christine Owen Ramser, 74, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, in Simi Valley Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Graham J. Owens Sr. and Florence Greene Owen.
She was a retired bank loan officer. She was a member of the Beverly Hills Church and choir.
Services will be in California.
Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Hanabach of San Diego and Crystal Ramser of Waco, Texas; two sons, Dean Ramser and Clint Ramser of California; a brother, Graham J. Owen Jr. of Oxford; and three sisters, Dorothy Elmore of Henderson, Nellie Wilkerson of Oxford and Joan Williamson of Clarksville, Va.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Marian Williamson, and one brother, William Owen.

Mary Lee Tingen Rudd

HENDERSON -- Mary Lee Tingen Rudd, 63, of 549 S. Cooper Drive died Monday, September 24, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. She was a native of Granville County, daughter of the late Robert and Mary Brooks Tingen, a member of Dexter Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. John Yount. Burial will follow in Royster cemetery in Bullock.
Surviving are her sister, Alleine T. Capps of Townsville, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Herman Tingen of Stovall, Alvin Tingen of Hampton, Va., and Wiley Tingen of Oxford.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to the Bullock Baptist Church cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 86, Bullock, N.C. 27507.
Active pallbearers will be nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Mrs. Virginia Tingen, 201 Gillis St., Stovall.

Lucy A.B. Waverly

HENDERSON -- Lucy Ann Burwell Waverly, 78, of 1095 Morgan Road died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Garnes Funeral Services.
