OXFORD -- Lila Hunt Daniel, 85, of 102 Westbury Drive died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Jessie Hobgood Hunt. She was the widow of Stanley L. Daniel Sr.
She was a lifetime member of Enon Baptist Church and was a former employee of the Oxford Masonic Orphanage.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Enon Baptist Church by the Rev. Jim Shelley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Shelby D. Eubanks of Durham, Betty D. Brooks of Oxford and Linda D. Maggiolo of New Bern; a son, Stanley L. Daniel Jr. of Oxford; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of George Edward and Betty Brooks, 5530 Culbreth Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Mary N. Jones

OXFORD -- Mary Nell Jones, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was the widower of Charles T. Jones Jr. and the daughter of the late George M. and Margaret Hedgepeth Quinn.
She was a former employee of Bobby Murray Chevrolet and Capital Ford, both of Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Jeremy S. Stirm and Lemar Wheeler. Burial will follow in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Shelby J. Jones of Oxford; two sons, Tommy Jones of El Paso, Texas, and Tony Jones of Henderson; one sister, Georgia Q. Black of Hampton, Va.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Timmie Jones.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lynwood Jones, 5118 Dorsey Road in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Charles Peoples

HENDERSON -- Charles Peoples, 71, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Jim and Martha Young Peoples.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Blacknall cemetery by Elder C.J. Dale.
Surviving are two sisters, Ella and Meldred Peoples, and one brother, Billy Clyde Peoples.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Dorothy E. Southerland

HENDERSON -- Dorothy Edith Southerland, 61, of 620 Thomas St. died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Louise Allen Southerland and the late Archie A. Southerland.
She was a member of St. James Baptist Church, where the funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Joann Allen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are three sons, Anthony Ricardo Southerland of California, Walter Bryan Southerland of Henderson and Melvin Allen Southerland of Henderson; one grandson; nine siblings, Bettie R. Hawkins, Sarah S. Davis and Carolyn J. Southerland, all of Henderson, Martha J. Southerland of Richmond, Va., Linda Southerland-Bell of Delaware, William “Bill” Southerland of Warrenton, Robert L. Southerland and James W. Southerland, both of Delaware, and Charles L. Southerland of California.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight in the Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Van A. Vandergrift Jr.

HENDERSON -- Van Anthony Vandergrift Jr., 20, of 102 Briarcliff died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001. He was a Vance County native and the son of Teresa Champion Vandergrift of Henderson and Van and Shirley Vandergrift of Raleigh.
He attended Vance County public schools and was a member of St. Andrews United Church of Christ, where he was a member of the junior choir.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrews U.C.C. by the Revs. C. Jerome Taylor and Joanne Ragland and Elder Darnell Dixon Jr. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are three brothers, Morey B. Champion of the Bronx, N.Y., Cornelius Vandergrift of Henderson and Jamel Sutton of Raleigh; two sisters, Chelandria Petway and Jennifer Sutton of Raleigh; and grandparents James Ora Vandergrift of Henderson and John Vandergrift of Washington, D.C.
The family will receive friends at 242 Pinkston St.
Pallbearers will be TaPona Champion, Jamel Sutton, Robert Vandergrift Jr., Christopher Gay, Steve Alston, Andrew Petway, Joseph Gay and Roy Edwards.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Albert P. Wilson

HENDERSON -- Albert Prescott “Dinky” Wilson, 39, of 300 Hawkins Drive died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late James Ricks and Christine Judkins Wilson.
He was educated in Vance County public schools, graduating in 1981 from Vance Senior High School. He was employed by Revlon of Oxford. He served on the trustee board of the Welcome Chapel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Progressive Faith Baptist Church by the Revs. Saint Silver and Douglas Judkins. Interment will be in the Jordan Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are four brothers, Thomas H. Wilson Jr. of St. Albans, N.Y., Robert Wilson of Amityville, N.Y., Carlton Wilson of Jamaica, N.Y., and James Wilson of Creedmoor, and five sisters, Minnie Dunlap of Hackensack, N.J., Sylvia Williams of Manhattan, N.Y., and Gloria Hawley, Carolyn Ellis and Felicia Wilson, all of Henderson.
The family will be at 216 Hawkins Drive.
Pallbearers will be Andre Solomon, Roy Baskerville, Daryl Ashe, Russell Hawley, Etheral Carter and Victor Vereen.

Bishop-elect Charlie W. Bullock

ROSELLE, N.J. -- Bishop-elect Charlie Wesley Bullock, 74, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at his residence in Roselle, N.J. He was the son of the late Rev. Charlie J. Bullock and Mary M. Bullock.
He married the former Mary Magdalene Elam in January 1945. They left North Carolina and raised their children in New Jersey, where they have lived the past 45 years.
In March 1961, he began a mission in a small storefront in the town of Cranford, N.J., with his wife and seven children as the only members. This mission was the beginning of Greater Mount Zion Holy Church, which flourished under his leadership. In 1975, a new building for the church was established.
In 1977, he accepted an additional pastoral assignment at the Old Ship of Zion Holy Church in Center Moriches, N.Y. He succeeded in founding a church building in 1992.
He was active in the Clergy Council of Cranford, the prison ministry and the food drive, as well as the youth outreach program.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary M. Bullock; seven children, Jessie Terry of Edison, N.J., Queen E. Payton of Colonia, N.J., Ida Corbitt of Edison, N.J., Patricia Darling of Linden, N.J., Florence Carter of Monmouth Junction, N.J., B. Wesley Bullock of Peekskill, N.Y., and Odessa Yelverton of Union, N.J.; six brothers, Samuel Bullock of Philadelphia and James Bullock, Jasper Bullock, Melvin Bullock, William Bullock and Omega Bullock, all of Henderson; two sisters, Evelyn Little of Edison, N.J, and Jewel Hawkins of Henderson; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Edward A. Spencer

OXFORD -- Edward A. Spencer, 47, of 2611 Boddie Currin Road died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at his residence. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Frank and Jean O’Briant Spencer.
Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Bonnie Pettijohn.
Surviving are one daughter, Rachel S. Larsen of Spanish Fork, Utah; one brother, Robbie Spencer of Oxford; and one sister, Victoria Hoomani of Cary.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Robert Spencer’s home, 2609 Boddie Currin Road in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Earl T. Bradley Sr.

OXFORD -- Earl Tillman Bradley Sr., 85, of 1134 Johnson Drive, Williamston, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the home of his son in Oxford. He was a native of Columbia, S.C., the son of the late Benjamin T. and Jessie Cooper Bradley and the widower of Modell R. Bradley.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Williamston and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He retired in 1974 from General Motors after 30 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Bill Long. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are a son, Earl T. Bradley Jr. of Oxford; a daughter, Judith Crockert of McDonough, Ga.; two brothers; one sister; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 11 South Boylan Ave., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Earl and Kathy Bradley Jr., 107 W. Quailridge Road, Oxford.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Alice W. Dowling

HENDERSON -- Alice Woodrow Dowling, 87, formerly of South Cooper Drive, Henderson, died Thursday, October 25, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Daniel and Theodore Dowling Dowling. She was the stepdaughter of Mary Felts Dowling.
Miss Dowling was a retired accountant with the North Carolina state government in Raleigh, where she was employed for more than thirty years. She was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gerald Niece. A private burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a sister, Mattie Belle Dowling Pegram of Henderson; and one niece, Faye Pegram Abbott, and husband John, of Kittrell.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of John and Faye Abbott, 987 Dick Smith Road, Kittrell.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Lillian S. Paschall

WARRENTON -- Lillian Smiley Paschall, 73, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Smiley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Warrenton Church of God. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery in Warrenton. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Surviving are her husband, Jack K. Paschall of Warrenton; one son, Wayne Paschall of Henderson; one daughter, Joyce P. Daeke of Henderson; one sister, Annie Ruth West of Littleton; two brothers, Edward Lee Smiley of Nash County and John Smiley of Norlina; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Marvin L. Rogers

HENDERSON -- Marvin Lee Rogers, 67, of 303 Pearl St. died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at his residence.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Johnie M. Thomas Jr.

HENDERSON -- Johnie Myers Thomas Jr., 63, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Johnie Myers Thomas Sr. and Zelma Thompson Thomas.
He was a building inspector for Wake County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Rev. Rob Evans.
Surviving are his wife, Janette Leonard Thomas; one son, Christopher Myres Thomas of Henderson; one daughter, Catherine Lynn Briggs of Fort Polk, La.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.
