Alice W. Dowling

HENDERSON -- Alice Woodrow Dowling, 87, formerly of South Cooper Drive, Henderson, died Thursday, October 25, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Daniel and Theodore Dowling Dowling. She was the stepdaughter of Mary Felts Dowling.
Miss Dowling was a retired accountant with the North Carolina state government in Raleigh, where she was employed for more than thirty years. She was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gerald Niece. A private burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a sister, Mattie Belle Dowling Pegram of Henderson; and one niece, Faye Pegram Abbott, and husband John, of Kittrell.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of John and Faye Abbott, 987 Dick Smith Road, Kittrell.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Lillian S. Paschall

WARRENTON -- Lillian Smiley Paschall, 73, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Smiley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Warrenton Church of God. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery in Warrenton. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Surviving are her husband, Jack K. Paschall of Warrenton; one son, Wayne Paschall of Henderson; one daughter, Joyce P. Daeke of Henderson; one sister, Annie Ruth West of Littleton; two brothers, Edward Lee Smiley of Nash County and John Smiley of Norlina; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Marvin L. Rogers

HENDERSON -- Marvin Lee Rogers, 67, of 303 Pearl St. died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at his residence.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Johnie M. Thomas Jr.

HENDERSON -- Johnie Myers Thomas Jr., 63, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Johnie Myers Thomas Sr. and Zelma Thompson Thomas.
He was a building inspector for Wake County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Rev. Rob Evans.
Surviving are his wife, Janette Leonard Thomas; one son, Christopher Myres Thomas of Henderson; one daughter, Catherine Lynn Briggs of Fort Polk, La.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Durema S. Daniel

HENDERSON -- Durema Rebecca Stainback Daniel, age 87, a resident of 173 Young Avenue, died Saturday evening in Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. She was a native of Vance Co., and was the daughter of the late William Clarence and Jessica Rebecca Lassiter Stainback. She was the beloved wife of Loyd Russell Daniel, Sr., who preceded her in death, and was a beloved mother and friend. Her presence will be greatly missed.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Dorothy Currin Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by one son, Loyd R. Daniel, Jr. and wife Catherine of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Rebecca D. Newton and husband Al of Orange Park, Florida, and Barbara D. Griffin of Fort Myers, Florida; one sister, Anne S. Parish of Orange, Texas; eight grandchildren, Clay Newton and wife Rene of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Kim Pruitt and husband David of Jacksonville, Florida, Durema Berry and husband Kenneth of Anderson, S.C., Daniel Ruke and wife Sarai of Fort Myers, Florida, Jacqueline Wright and husband James K. of Warner Robins, Georgia, Loyd R. “Rusty” Daniel, III and wife Lucy of Atlanta, Georgia, William Daniel and wife Paige of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Charles Daniel and wife Mary of Winston-Salem, N.C.; twelve great-grandchildren, Jessica Bastian, Makenna Berry, Loyd R. “Russ” Daniel, IV, Robert Davis Daniel, Tara Newton, Tiffany Newton, Alaina Pruitt, Sean Pruitt, Victoria Ruke, Olivia Ruke, Blake Wright, and Gavin Wright; one aunt, Louray Mixon; several nieces and nephews, and many special friends. She was the sister of the late Dr. William C. Stainback, Roscoe Stainback, Albert Stainback, and Dorothy Powell.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the Church Parlor of the First Baptist Church. Following the service, all are invited to her home.
Serving as pall bearers will be Loyd R. Daniel, Jr., Loyd R. Daniel, III, Charles H. Daniel, William H. Daniel, James W. Daniel, Daniel T. Ruke, David Pruitt, Kenneth Berry, Elbert Clay Newton, Elbert Clay Newton, Jr., James K. Wright and Jerry Stainback.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Anthony C. Garrett

NORLINA -- Anthony Chad Garrett, 16, of Rt. 2, Norlina, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his home. He was a Vance County native and the son of Andy and Connie Hayes Garrett of Norlina.
He was a 10th grade student at Southern Vance High School, and was a member of Shocco United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shocco United Methodist Church by the Revs. Frank Sossamon and Alan Follett. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Adam Randolph Garrett of the home; his maternal grandparents, Winfred and Marie Hayes of Henderson; and his paternal grandmother, Alma Garrett of Norlina. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James O. Garrett.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jonathan Morton, Dusty Abbott, Robbie Gill, Justin Phelps, Blake Ellis, Matt Pawelczyk, R.A. Louthen, Adam Pegram and Tony Ross.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to The Chad Garrett Memorial Fund, Rt. 2, Box 135-A, Norlina, N.C. 27563.

Evelyn A. Harris

CREEDMOOR -- Evelyn Antone Harris, 89, of 121 North St., died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Rex Convalescent Care Center in Raleigh. She was a Wake County native and the daughter of the late A.D. and Bettie Samara Antone. She was the widow of William F. Harris Sr.
She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Butner and was retired as a Creedmoor Merchant.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, at a time to be announced later, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Butner by Father Robert Stanley. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.
Surviving are two sons, William F. Harris Jr. of Butner and Hal T. Harris of Raleigh; a sister, Elizabeth Antone of Miami, Fla.; a brother, William Earl Antone of Lumberton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 806 “D” St., Butner, N.C. 27509.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Ernestine D. Hicks

NEW YORK -- Ernestine Debnam Hicks, 70, a native of Vance County, died at her residence in New York.
The family will receive friends at her brother’s residence, James Debnam, 111 Sarah Lane.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Lawrence B. Nielsen

HENDERSON -- Lawrence Brooks Nielsen, Sr., age 85, a resident of Warren Hills Nursing Home and a former resident of Henderson, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001 at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

James W. Vaughn

CHAPEL HILL -- James Woodrow Vaughn, 73, a former resident of Granville County, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, in Chapel Hill. He was a native of Iaeger, W.Va., and was the son of the late Earl and Leona Cooper Vaughn.
He was a retired school teacher, having taught at Vance Academy and Zeb Vance School.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.M. White Chapel by the Rev. Jim Hines. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Pulley Vaughn of the home; one son, Zachary W. Vaughn of Bellefonte, Pa.; one daughter, Terry V. Finn of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at J.M. White Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of William and Virginia Pulley, 3530 N. Lynnbank Road in Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be David Pulley Sr., Phillip Collier, Allen Edwards, Tony Collier, Jimmy Elliott and Scott Hughes.
Arrangements are by J.M. White Funeral Home.

Bobby E. Wimbush

VANCE COUNTY -- Bobby Eugene Wimbush, 38, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Otha and Mamie Clark Wimbush.
At an early age, he joined the Ashley Grove Baptist Church and was educated in the Vance County Schools.
Surviving are one son, Maurice Alston of Townsville; five sisters, Mary W. Fuller, Louise Terry, Ruth Robinson, Annie Terry and Diane Wimbush, all of Henderson; six brothers, Sandy Clark of Warren County, Otha Wimbush, George Wimbush and David Wimbush, all of Henderson, Preston Wimbush and Christopher Wimbush, both of Middleburg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Oak Level U.C.C. in Manson. The Rev. Leon White will officiate, assisted by the Revs. John Jefferson and Alma Pettaway. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at 304 College St.
Active floralbearers will be Deanna W. Steed, Linda Wimbush, Josie Clark, Crystal Wimbush, Pricilla W. Mason and Tisha Terry. Honorary floralbearers will be his nieces.
Pallbearers will be Percy Wimbush, Tommy Jeffreys, Julius Wimbush, William Mason Jr., Ray Wimbush and James Wimbush. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service. Condolences may be sent to ect@gloryroad.net.

Annie G.P. Baskerville

HENDERSON -- Annie Gray Peace Baskerville, 65, of 765 Satterwhite Point Road died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Carrie Day Overby and Nathaniel Peace. She was the widow of Clyde Baskerville Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted a 2 p.m. Friday at Ashley Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Wilson Battle. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Shelia Baskerville of the home; two sons, Michael Baskerville of the home and Clyde Baskerville Jr. of Middleburg; two sisters, Shirley Overby and Julia Overby, both of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Garnes Funeral Chapel and other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Floral bearers will be nieces.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Wilbert A. Edwards

HENDERSON -- Wilbert Allen Edwards of 1540 E. Andrews Ave., Henderson, and 1114 College St., Oxford, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.

WARREN COUNTY -- Jonathan Foster, 21, of Warren County died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.

Ralph B. Hight

HENDERSON -- Ralph B. Hight of 1116 Hargrove St. died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.
Arrangements will be announced by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

William Hunter

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- William Hunter, 76, of Chesapeake, formerly of Warrenton, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his residence in Chesapeake.
Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Warren C. Jacks

STEM -- Warren C. Jacks, 80, of 1602 Dogwood Circle died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Meadowland Nursing Center. He was a native of Francisco, Ala., and the son of the late Richard C. and Martha Pogue Jacks.
He was reared in Alabama and Illinois and served in the 14th Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked in the Chicago area until his retirement in 1983, at which time he moved to Florida and then to Granville County. He was a member of Geneva Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Douglas J. Hadley. Burial will be in Geneva Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Minnie Cowart Jacks; a daughter, Julie J. Gauer of Naperville, Ill.; two sisters, Christine Croft of Mesa, Ariz., and Dorothy Saxton of Hazel Crest, Ill.; a brother, James Jacks of La Mosa, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. His first wife, Marion Welch Jacks, preceded him in death.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Geneva Presbyterian Church, c/o Frances Bullock, 2665 Lake Devin Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Elizabeth Elmore Johnson

ASHEBORO -- Elizabeth Elmore Johnson, born February 10, 1913, in Brown Summit, North Carolina, passed away October 31, 2001. She is preceded in death by her husband, James H. Johnson Jr., and daughters, Brenda Faye Johnson and Elizabeth Ann Lassiter.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Science Hill Friends Meeting with the Rev. Allen Bullard and the Rev. Brady Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Known as Zeb to those close to her, she is survived by her son, Jim Johnson, and his wife, Betty, of Henderson; grandchildren Kimberly Rogers, Amy Steg and Jimmy Johnson, all of Henderson; and great-grandchildren Justin, Morgan and Colin Roberson and Katie and Holly Frances Steg, of Henderson. Zeb is also survived by sisters Peggy Cates of Greensboro, Jean Horner of Raleigh, Gladys Moore of Greensboro, Frances Corey of Gaffney, S.C., and Edna Monnik of Pretoria, South Africa, and brothers Max Elmore of Gibsonville, Richard Elmore of Sanford, Fla., and Jim Elmore of San Antonio, Texas. She is preceded in death by one brother, Roscoe Elmore.
Zeb and husband James made their home near Asheboro, North Carolina, where they lived together almost 50 years. Zeb was employed by Randolph Hospital for 30 years and retired in 1994. She was a member of Science Hill Friends Meeting.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 2, 2001, from 7-9 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, N.C.

Lawrence B. Nielsen Sr.

HENDERSON -- Lawrence Brooks Nielsen Sr., 85, a resident of Warren Hills Nursing Home and a former resident of Henderson, died Monday at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Norfolk, Va., and the son of the late Christopher and Mary I’Anson Nielsen.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and merchant marine and was a retired storekeeper on a Navy ship. He was the widower of Dorothy Jean Smith Nielsen and was a member of the Bible Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday at noon at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Littleton by the Rev. James S. Stanley.
He is survived by two daughters, Laura Jean N. Garcia of Henderson and Christine N. Jones of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Lawrence B. Nielsen Jr. of Macon; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mary S. Edwards

HENDERSON -- Mary Lee Smith Edwards, age 77, a resident of 1155 E. Andrews Avenue, died Thursday morning at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late William Jethro and Lucille Andrews Smith. She was the widow of William Henry “Biddie” Edwards and was the owner and operator of Biddie’s Grill for 45 years.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and Major Dan Turner. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice E. Harp and husband Alton of Henderson; one godson, Jerry Taylor and wife Ellen of Henderson; six sisters, Alma Moss, Ruth S. Morefield, Mattie S. Hendricks and Mildred S. Edwards, all of Henderson, Linda S. Gupton of Louisburg, and Brenda S. Turner of Memphis, Tennessee; one brother, Robert Smith of Stoneville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Stephanie Harp and Stephen Harp.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ronnie Edwards, Donnie Grissom, Freddie Taylor, Wayne Hendricks, Edward Poole, Michael Winters and Brent Edwards.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Janice and Alton Harp at 1815 Peter Gill Road.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
