WARRENTON -- Rory Brown, 22, of Warrenton, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, in Warrenton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boyd’s Funeral Service Chapel by the Rev. Dennis Wooten. Burial will follow in Odell Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his father, Bernard Brown of Richmond, Va.; his mother, Doris Burgess Merriweather of Littleton; one brother, Christopher Brown of Greensboro; three sisters, Alexis and Jasmine Brown, both of Richmond, Va, and Bernita Mason of Warrenton; his paternal grandparents, Edith and Eddie Brown of Warrenton; and his maternal grandmother, Alma Burgess of Littleton.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Service in Warrenton.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

John Davis

WARRENTON -- John Davis, 83, of Warrenton, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at K&G Family Care Home in Warrenton.
Arrangements will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

Roy Lee Dickerson

KITTRELL -- Roy Lee Dickerson, age 68, a resident of 139 E. Main Street, died Saturday night at his home.
He was a native of Granville County and was the son of the late Alfred and Trudy Bolinger Dickerson. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a self-employed plumber and attended the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in the Rehobeth United Methodist Church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Cummings Dickerson, of the home; two daughters, Angie D. Graziano of Oxford and Susan D. Satterwhite of Henderson; one son, Bobby Dickerson, of Oxford; two step-daughters, Carolyn Price, of Pilot Mountain and Joni Johannes of Beach Lake, Pa.; three sisters, Ruth D. Davis of Stem, Anna D. Lowery of Henderson, and Nancy D. Strickland of Roxboro; three brothers, John Dickerson of Franklinton, A. Y. Dickerson, and Lynwood Dickerson both of Henderson; eight grandchildren, four stepgrandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Kenny Dickerson, Danny Dickerson, Steve Dickerson, Jerry Wayne Dickerson, Junior Lowery, and Anthony Lowery.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Thelma E. Harrison

BUTNER -- Thelma Evans Harrison, 78, of Hwy. #41, Beulaville, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Autumn Village Nursing Home in Beulaville. She was a native of Pitt County, the widow of A.C. Harrison and the daughter of the late John and Retha Balree Evans.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Butner, a member of Chapter #94, Order of the Eastern Star, and was retired from John Umstead Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Butner by the Rev. Jeff Nichols. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham.
Surviving are a daughter, Arlene H. Gurganus of Wilmington; a son, Steve M. Harrison of Nashville; a brother, Robert L. Evans of Salisbury; and three grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Butner, 202 W. “D” St., Butner, N.C. 27509.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

John L. Jones

HENDERSON -- John L. Jones, 85, a native of Vance County, and a former resident of New York, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Veteran’s Hospital in Durham.
Minister Evelyn Couch will conduct graveside services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Evelyn A. Champion of Henderson and Elsie Hicks of Boston, Mass.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Sankey Overton

ASHEBORO -- Sankey Overton, 74, of Asheboro, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro.

William H. Rice Jr.

HENDERSON -- William Harlis Rice Jr., 50, of 118 N. Elizabeth St., died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late William and Genora Burwell Rice.
He was educated in Vance County Public Schools and was employed with the Kittrell Job Corp.
He was a member of the Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday by Pastor Armstrong. Interment will be at the Ruin Creek Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home on Wednesday evening.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Rice of Raleigh; a daughter, Tonya Jones of Henderson; a son, Shelvin Rice of Charlotte; two grandchildren; two stepsons, Jessie Alston of Louisburg and Ricky Alston of Raleigh.
Viewing will be held from 12 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnes Funeral Service.
Viewing will also be held Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Queen D. Branch
MACON -- Queen Davis Branch, 40, of Macon died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church in Macon. Pastor James Pettaway will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her father, Cleveland Davis of Macon, and her stepmother, Mary Alston Davis of Warren Hills Nursing Facilities; four brothers, Ronald H. Davis, Henry M. Davis and Roscoe Davis, all of Richmond, Va., and Millard B. Davis of Warrenton; five sisters, Vivian D. Broadie, Clevenia D. Davis and Mildred J. Davis, all of Richmond, Va., Leavonia D. Alexander of Manson, and Lyndel D. Barnes of Raleigh; four stepsisters; and three stepbrothers.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Van E. Coleman

NORLINA -- Van Earl Coleman, 73, of Norlina died Tuesday evening, November 6, 2001.
Earl was born in Warren County to the late Van Allen Coleman and Lucy King Coleman.
He was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church and a 1945 graduate of Norlina High School.
Earl was a dedicated father and husband. He excelled as a mechanic, welder and farmer. He worked several years with the late Felix Williams at the Wise Welding Shop before he started farming full time. He continued in that profession until his retirement in 1991, the same year he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Earl battled his illness with character and courage, determined to go on as an active and positive contributor to life, remaining so until passing. His example lives on as an uplifting memory and inspiration for family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Lee Coleman.
Earl is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Floyd Coleman of the home; three daughters, Linda Diane Coleman of Route 1, Norlina, Carol Coleman Hissong and husband Jeff of Wake Forest, Janice Coleman Wright and husband Jim of Raleigh; two sons, Michael Earl Coleman and wife Elena of Raleigh, Jeffrey Allen Coleman and wife Gail of Route 1, Norlina; two sisters, Mildred Coleman Peeler and husband Roger of Raleigh, Shirley Coleman Britt and husband Marvin of Luray, Va.; grandchildren Jeffrey Hissong, Michael Wright, Sarah Wright, Anna Wright, Laura Traylor and Emily Traylor; stepgrandchildren Brian Stegall and Alicia Stegall.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church by Rev. Mark Clayton at 2:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Lymphoma Cancer Research or Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

Gladys A. Morris

OXFORD -- Gladys Adcock Morris, 62, of 534 George Sherman Road, Rougemont, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at her home.
She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Otha David and Mary Wiles Adcock.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Vance County and was medically retired from Lenox China.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Wood. Burial will be in Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Vaxter T. Morris; two daughters, Debra Jacobs of Wendell and Sandra Dao of Oxford; three sisters, Hallie Saunders of Henderson, Ann Hite of Oxford and Linda Hobson of Northport, Ala.; a brother, Winston Adcock of Oxford; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

John F. Richardson

HENDERSON -- John Fitzgerald Richardson, 37, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

James D. Roberson Sr.

OXFORD -- James D. Roberson Sr., 72, of 612 Hillsboro St. died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Walter and Effie Webster Roberson. He was the widower of Zora Nicholson Roberson.
He was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church, a Marine veteran of the Korean War and a retired auto mechanic with Oakes Motor Co.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gala Collins. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his daughter, Joan Roberson of Oxford; his son, Jimmy D. Roberson of Oxford; his sisters, Thelma R. Blakney and Ruth R. Jeffcoat, both of Oxford, Doris R. Elliott of Burlington, and Helen R. Parham of Richmond, Va.; his brother, Alvis Roberson of Oxford; and his granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by brothers Willie Roberson, Louis Roberson and Walter Roberson Jr. and a sister, Catherine R. Dickerson.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Granville County Hospice, 123 Belle St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jimmy and Jan-nie Roberson, 610 Hillsboro St.

Jonah V. Arnold

CREEDMOOR -- Jonah V. Arnold, 68, of J&J Trailor Park, Franklinton, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Franklin County native and the son of the late Jonah and Girlie Pendenton Arnold.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired service station owner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Don Brown. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Arnold of Raleigh; four sons, Danny Arnold and Dwight Arnold, both of Raleigh, and Charles Arnold and Jerry Arnold, both of Wake Forest; a sister, Grace Medlin of Creedmoor; four brother, Cernes Arnold, Carton Arnold and Harold Arnold, all of Louisburg, and Clay Arnold of Centerville; and several grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. today before the funeral at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Bess W. Daniel

CARY -- Bess White Daniel, 91, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Cary Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was a native of Oxford.
Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elmwood cemetery in Oxford by the Rev. Harrison Simons.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are by GentryNewell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

John Davis

WARRENTON -- John Davis, 83, of Warrenton died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at K&G Family Care Home in Warrenton.

Surviving are three sisters, Hannah Cannady of Warrenton, Lizzie Williams of the Bronx, N.Y., and Beatrice Williams of Portsmouth, Va.; and two brothers, James Cannady of Warrenton and Arthur Williams of Englewood, N.J.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Service in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Service.

Edward Allen Newman

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Edward Allen Newman of Newport News, Va., died on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001.
Mr. Newman was born in Vance County, N.C., and was a resident of Newport News for the past 55 years. He was the son of the late William James Newman Sr. and Delia Daniel Newman. He graduated from Middleburg High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He retired from Fort Eustis after 35 years as Divisions Chief of USATSCH.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Maurice E. Newman, Arthur Clemens Newman and William James Newman Jr., and a sister, Annie Louise Newman.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Phillips Newman; daughters, Ann Faye Newman Perry and her husband, Ted, and Whitney Paige Newman Hager and her husband, Todd; brothers, Raeford M. Newman and Raymond F. Newman; sister, Nannie Mae Edmonds; grandchildren, Michael Perry, Sharon Woodard and Avery Lauren Hager; greatgrandchildren, Stephen and Matthew Perry; and many wonderful nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends, including his dear friends Doug and Anna Gibson.
A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in Peninsula Memorial Park by his brotherinlaw, the Rev. Glenn Elgin, and Mr. Newman’s daughter, Paige.
Memorial contributions may be made to your local chapter of the Leukemia Society of America, 2101 Executive Drive, Box 21, Hampton, Va. 23666, or the American Cancer Society, 895 Middleground Blvd., Suite 154, Newport News, Va. 23606.

Russell F. Eaves

HENDERSON -- Russell Franks “Whitey” Eaves, 73, of 239 Eaves Road, Henderson, in the Epsom community, died Thursday, November 8, 2001, in Raleigh Community Hospital in Raleigh, N.C.
Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Charlie O’Brient and Addie Lou Ayscue Eaves.
Mr. Eaves was a retired sales representative with Coastal Chemical Company. He was a farmer and owned and operated General Insurance Agency. He was president of the Epsom Country Club and was a member of The Shoe and Slipper Club.
He was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak and the Rev. Tammy Ayscue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Summerlin Alford Eaves; two daughters, Kaye E. Thrasher, and husband Larry, of Annapolis, Maryland, and Tammy E. Ayscue, and husband Robin, of Oxford; a son, Russell S. Eaves, and wife Deborah, of Greenville, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Amy E. Alford of Raleigh; a stepson, Kevin M. Alford, and wife Kay, of Youngsville; two sisters, Christine E. Oakley of Mebane and Mary Nell E. Greene of Norfolk, Virginia; a brother, Charles T. Eaves, and wife Garnetta, of Epsom; five grandchildren, Harrison Thrasher, Colin Thrasher, Addison Ayscue, Kara Ayscue and Tyler Eaves; and two stepgrandchildren, Cameron Alford and Casey Alford.
The family will receive friends Saturday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Earl Parker, Norwood Wynne, Ronald Renn, Jackie Ellis, Pete Roger, Barry Curtis, Steve Reavis, Toleston Eaves and Randolph Reese
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10019.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
