Robert T. Wheeler Sr.

NORLINA -- Robert Thomas Wheeler Sr., 69, of Division Street died Thursday at his residence. Mr. Wheeler was a Creedmoor, N.C., native born October 28, 1932, to the late Eugene Carl Wheeler and Lillie G. Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Harvey, and a brother, Dr. William Carl Wheeler.
Mr. Wheeler was a member of First Baptist Church in Oxford, a member of the American Legion, U.S. Army veteran and retired manager of the A&P Grocery Store in Warrenton for 42 years.
The Rev. Ricky Easter will conduct funeral services 3 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Warren Dale cemetery in Norlina.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Wheeler Anthony of Collinsville, Va.; a son, Robert Thomas “Tommy” Wheeler Jr. of Henderson; two sisters, Jean Wheeler Smith of Radford, Va., and Jacqueline Wheeler Sparks, Portsmouth, Va.; and three grandchildren, Stephanie Wheeler, Brandon Wheeler and Graves Anthony.
Memorials may be made to the Wheels of Steel.
The family received friends at Blaylock Funeral Home Saturday from 7-9 p.m.

Fannie W. Wilson

HENDERSON -- Fannie W. Wilson, 92, of 1245 Park Ave. died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Britthaven of Henderson. She was a Granville County native.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Alan McAlister. Burial will follow in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Charlotte Wilson Wilkening of Dunkirk, Md.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Eugene Wheeles Ayscue

CASTALIA -- Eugene Wheeles Ayscue, 65, died Monday, November 12, 2001. He was born August 18, 1936, in Franklin County, son of the late Johnny H. and Mamie Carroll Ayscue. He was a member of Castalia Church of God. Mr. Ayscue retired after 38 years from Harriet & Henderson Cotton Mills in Henderson, N.C. He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene W. Ayscue Jr., brother, Perry Height, and sister, Florence Radford.
Surviving: wife, Margaret Mosley Ayscue of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Daphine A. Smith and Bill Vance of Castalia, Bonnie A. and Larry Varner of Louisburg and Angel A. and Harold Schneller of Wake Forest; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny R. and Theresa Ayscue and Steve E. Ayscue, both of Castalia; stepmother, Rosa Ayscue of Alert, N.C.; sisters, Sarah Ayscue and Rose A. Pernell of Louisburg and Elsie A. Stallings of Centerville; brothers, Davie Hight of Castalia, Raymond Ayscue of Henderson, Thomas Ayscue, Robert Ayscue, Allen Perry Ayscue, William Ayscue and Johnny H. Ayscue Jr., all of Louisburg; twenty-one grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A gathering to celebrate his life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Chapel of Nashville with the Rev. Robert Piper Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Ayscue-Bobbitt Family cemetery in Nash County. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the Chapel in Nashville.

Diana W. Bland

WARRENTON -- Diana W. Bland, 89, of Warrenton died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Gus and Louisiana Williams.
She joined the Spring Green Missionary Baptist Church early and remained a faithful member until her health began to fail. While serving as a member of Spring Green, she played the piano for many years.
She was a graduate of John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton. She had many occupations, including driving a bookmobile and working at Superior Dry Cleaners.
She was preceded in death by her husband and 14 sisters and brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Spring Green Baptist Church in Warrenton by the Rev. Dennis G. Lindsay, pastor.
Surviving are one son, Henry Lee Williams of Summer Post, N.J.; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Bertha G. Brogden

CREEDMOOR -- Bertha Gay Brogden, 90, of 807 N. Main St. died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Home in Oxford. She was a Durham County native and the daughter of the late Brad Rickman and Florence Keith Gay. She was the widow of Jack Brogden.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Dan Hill. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Sallie B. Carden and Judy B. Chisenhall, both of Creedmoor; three sons, J.B. Brogden of Oxford and Wallace Brogden and Tommy Brogden, both of Creedmoor; four sisters, Burma Roberson, Mabel Teasley and Helen Teasley, all of Durham, and Alma Jordan of Elgin, S.C.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Two sons, Arthur Brogden and Douglas Brogden, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home of Sallie Carden, 813 Crescent Drive, Creedmoor.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Lou Ella Bullock

WARREN COUNTY -- Lou Ella Bullock, 92, of Warren County died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at the Floyd McKissick Center in Soul City.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Level United Church of Christ in Manson by the Rev. Leon White, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her son, Wil-liam Edward Bullock of Warren-ton; one sister, Channie Hender-son of Drewry; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Jackson Burroughs Sr.

HENDERSON -- Jackson Burroughs Sr., 86, of 468 George Floyd Road died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at his residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Garnes Funeral Services.

Richard A. Burrus Jr.

WARRENTON -- Richard Atwell Burrus Jr., 67, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Cherokee and the son of the late Richard A. Burrus Sr. and Mary Shelton Burrus.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Norlina Baptist Church.
Surviving are three children, Richard A. Burrus III, Charlyce B. McArthur and John Burrus; and eight grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home.

Tornelius Clifton

HENDERSON -- Tornelius “Moo Moo” Clifton, 15, of 890 Old Epsom Road died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001. He was a Vance County native and the son of Denise Johnson Clifton and Larry Hamilton.
He was an eighth-grader at Henderson Middle School.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Revs. Joseph Ratliff, C.J. Dale and John Miles. Burial will follow in the Concord Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Denise J. Clifton of the home; one brother, Jerry Johnson; two sisters, Latasha Clifton and Kristen Dickerson; his stepfather, Raymond T. Bullock; and a grandmother, Hazel Johnson of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Melanie A.H. Coursey

HENDERSON -- Melanie Ann Hall Coursey, 29, of 565 Wayview Road died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001. She was a native of Carthage, N.Y., and daughter of Cheryl Hall of Charles Town, W.Va., and David Lavalley. She was employed by Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Darren Brisco. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Ernest Coursey; one daughter, Jennifer Coursey of Henderson; one son, Aaron Coursey of Henderson; one sister, Christina Lee of Charles Town; and one brother, Jeff Aubin of Fayetteville.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ozell Mangum, Harry Pearce, Ferdee delos Santos, Ken Smith, Jason Evans and Spencer Pernell.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Dollie M.G. Creech

HENDERSON -- Dollie Mae Griffin Creech, 75, of 335 Stewart Road, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Nash County native and the daughter of the late Ludie and Lillie Bissite Griffin. She was the widow of Rubin Arch Creech Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are five sons, Rub-in A. Creech Jr., R.C. Creech, Ludie E. Creech Sr. and Claude F. Creech Sr., all of Henderson, and Julian R. Creech of Kittrell; two sisters, Lissie G. Denton of Spring Hope and Betty G. Ortiz of Henderson; three brothers, Bennie Griffin and Raymond Griffin, both of Henderson, and Richard Griffin of Asheboro; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Arch Creech.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Ludie and Judy Creech, 335 Stewart Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Tommy Manning, Joe Johnson, Ronnie Lassiter, Jack Pernell, Scott Pernell, Dexter Crowder, Herman Collier, and Jason Crowder.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mary L.A. Garrison

HENDERSON -- Mary Lil-lian Allen Garrison, 89, of Britt-haven died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. She was a Louisburg native and daughter of the late Arthur Bruce Allen and Lillian Perry Allen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfonso Carrol Garrison, and two sons, Charles A. Garrison of Charlotte and Sam P. Garrison of Davidson.
Surviving are two sons, Newell S. Garrison of Henderson and James C. Garrison of Brad-enton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Lancaster Funeral Home, 804 N. Bickett Blvd., Louisburg.
Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Michael T. Johnson

HENDERSON -- Michael Thomas “Mike” Johnson, 49, of 230 Finch Road died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. He was a native of Granville County and was the son of the late Thomas H. and Martha Kearney Johnson. He was a retired lieutenant with the Vance County Fire and Ambulance Service and was a former police officer in Durham.
He was a member of the Operation Bass Club and the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League.
Memorial services will be held Thursday night at 8:15 at the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Currin Johnson; one son, Thomas H. “Tommy” Johnson of Henderson; one stepdaughter, Kristie P. Burleson of Henderson; one sister, Millie J. Wilson of Biloxi, Miss.; one brother, Donald “Henry” Johnson of Stem; and three grand-children. He was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Crystal Pulley and Jennifer Pulley.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:30 until 8 in the Fellowship Hall of the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. At other times they will be at the home.
Honorary pallbearers will be all employees of the Henderson/Vance Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 2286, Henderson, N.C. 27537.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

William Johnson Jr.

HENDERSON -- William Johnson Jr., 62, of 1000 Foster Road died Friday, Nov. 10, 2001, at his residence. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late William and Ida B. Kersey Johnson.
He was educated in the Warren County public schools and was an employee of Ricky Hicks’ as a bricklayer for 25 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Emmitt Jefferson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Dornice Terry Johnson; six children, Franklin Johnson of the home, Glenn Johnson, Diane Cousin, James Seward and Ellen Seward, all of Henderson, and Jimmy Seward of Richmond, Va.; seven siblings, Eddie Johnson and Robert Johnson, both of Queens, N.Y., Vinnie Henderson of Kinston, James Johnson of Henderson, Lillie Williams of Queens, and Sollie Johnson, David Johnson, Michael Johnson and Leon Johnson, all of Henderson; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Green, Steve Hicks, Melvin Jones, Randolph Jones, Alex Obey and James Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be George Kersey, June Kersey, Lorenzo Epps, Dennis Johnson, Monzel Kersey and William Davis.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Clinton Pettiford

OXFORD -- Clinton “Sport” Pettiford, 73, of Oxford Manor, formerly of Kittrell, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Oxford Manor.
He was a member of Pettiford Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Pettiford Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Waddell Tapp. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving is one sister, Josephine Owens of Oxford.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home and other times at the home of Josephine Owens, 6666 Briarwood Drive.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Sonny Rice

HENDERSON -- Sonny Rice of Henderson died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.

Barbara J. Royster

OXFORD -- Barbara Jean Royster, 67, of 3739 Salem Road died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the widow of Willie Lee Royster Sr.
She was a member of Mount Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church in Vance County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. Milton Ballard. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Bell of Jersey City, N.J.; three sons, Terry Royster of Philadelphia, Scott R. Royster of Neshanic Station, N.J., and Tommy Lee Cates of Jersey City, N.J.; four sisters, Juanita Tooles of Yonkers, N.Y., Ida Howard of White Plains, N.Y., and Helen Nevius and Irene Turner, both of Henderson; and 14 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.

James Davis

WARRENTON -- James Davis, 57, of Warrenton died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coley Springs Baptist Church in Warrenton by the Rev. Carson Jones, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Hunt Davis; one brother, William H. Davis of Norlina; and one sister, Celestine Boyd of Warrenton.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.
