Barbara W. Spain

HENDERSON, N.C. -- Barbara Wortham Spain, 67, of 188 Spring Valley Road, Henderson, N.C., died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at her home.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Washington “Ned” Wortham and Ruth Baggett Wortham. She was the widow of William Macy “Bill” Spain, Sr.
Mrs. Spain was a prominent business woman. She was owner and operator of Spain Mobile Homes. She was a Century Farm owner, and was a member of the Henderson Business and Professional Women, where she was a Past President and Club Woman of the Year. She was a Past President of the North Carolina State University Agricultural Foundation, and was a member of the City of Henderson Planning Board, the Brookston Bridge Club and Fleming Bridge Club. She was an active member of Brookston Presbyterian Church, where she was an Elder, church historian, and taught the Bill Spain Bible Class.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m., at Brookston Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Mary L. Alston. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are three sons, William Macy “Billy” Spain, Jr. and wife, Pat, and Edward Frank “Butch” Spain and wife, Donna, all of Henderson, and Bradley Wortham Spain, of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Jason E. Spain and Jenna E. Spain, both of Henderson; a brother, George E. Wortham, and wife, Jane, of Henderson; and an aunt, Alease N. Wortham, of Henderson.
The family will receive friends Monday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Eddie Ellington, Ken Hunt, William Walker, Tommy Bobbitt, Richard Hinton, Tom Spain, Adrian Brame, and Billy Hunt. The Brookston Bridge Club, the Fleming Bridge Club, the Henderson Business and Professional Women, and the City of Henderson Planning Board will served as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Brookston Presbyterian Church, c/o Alma Dillard, 1546 Brookston Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537, or to Kerr Vance Academy, Library Media Center Endowment Fund, 700 Vance Academy Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

James L. Burwell

BUTNER -- James L. Burwell, 51, of 404 West E St. died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Triangle Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.
He was a member of Hawkins Chapel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hawkins Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. W.R. Taylor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Christa Harden Burwell; one daughter, Tiphanie Burwell of Raleigh; one son, Jamie Burwell of the home; his mother, Dorothy Harris Burwell of Franklinton; five sisters, Mary Kearney of Joppa, Md., Agnes Cooper of Oxford, Angela Taborn of Savannah, Ga., and Helen Wilder and Alice Kearney, both of Franklinton; and two brothers, Donnell Burwell and Kenneth Burwell, both of Franklinton.
The family will receive visitors at the residence.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jamie Burwell Rehabilitation Fund, c/o 404 West E St., Butner, N.C. 27509.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Minnie Lee C. Hight

HENDERSON -- Minnie Lee Crabtree Hight, 73, of 1252 Hight St. died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Warren County and was the daughter of the late Lee and Emma Helen Knight Crabtree. She was a member of the former North Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and the Rev. Jesse Matthews. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her husband, Walter “Billy” Hight; one daughter, Mary Helen Garner of Henderson; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Mary Helen and Alton Garner at 757 Boddie St.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Lee Hight, Phillip A. Hight, Scott Fields, Mike Ashley, Doug Wortham and Curtis Matthews.
Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.

Laura M.R. Johnson

NEW JERSEY -- Laura Mae Royster Johnson, 55, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in New Jersey.
The family will be at the home of Ruth Royster, 345 Evans Road in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

Louis L. Henton

RALEIGH -- Louis Lee Henton, 73, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Rex Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Walter Lee Henton and Betsy Shearin Henton Southerland.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, a Mason and a member of Cary Lodge 198 since 1956. He retired from the 3M Co. in 1972, when he became owner of Six Forks Gulf.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Recca “Rex” Weathersby Henton; two sons, Walter Vann Henton and David Lee Henton; two daughters, Lovann H. Kitchell and Sarah C. Henton; one granddaughter; two sisters, Betty H. Goodson of Henderson and Helen H. Rooker of Norlina; four stepchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Brown-Wynn Funeral Home of Raleigh.

Minnie Lee
Crabtree Hight

HENDERSON -- Minnie Lee Crabtree Hight, age 73, a resident of 1252 Hight Street, died Monday at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Warren Co. and was the daughter of the late Lee and Emma Helen Knight Crabtree. She was a member of the former North Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Hight, and Elsie Hight Covington and Ronald Covington, all of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Hight and Dorothy Collins Hight; and a brother-in-law, Rylon P. Hight.
The family received friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Mary Helen and Alton Garner at 757 Boddie Street.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Lee Hight, Phillip A. Hight, Scott Fields, Mike Ashley, Doug Wortham and Curtis Matthews.

Keonda A. Martin

HENDERSON -- Keonda Antwunette Martin, 12, died of a brain stem glioma Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. She was a Vance County native.
She was a seventh-grade home-bound honor student who attended Eaton-Johnson Middle School before her illness.
She was a faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church, a lead vocalist of the J.H. Bryant Ensemble, an usher and assistant secretary of the usher board, and a junior missionary. She regularly attended Sunday school and Bible study and assisted the kitchen committee.
Homecoming services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church on East Avenue in Henderson.
Surviving are her mother, Felicia Martin of the home; one brother, Antonio Martin of the home; two sisters, Loricia Martin and Alicia Martin, both of the home; and a maternal grandmother, Earline Martin of the home.
Viewing will be held Friday at Garnes Funeral Service on East Andrews Avenue.
Donations for brain tumor research should be forwarded to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, c/o Dr. Sri Gururangan, Duke University Medical Center, DUMC-3624, Durham, N.C. 27710.

Thomas T. ‘Buck’ Lee

KITTRELL -- Thomas Thurston “Buck” Lee, 69, of 391 Kittrell Road died Friday morning, Dec. 7, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., and was the son of the late Tom and Mable Wallace Lee. He was a self-employed painter and was a member of the Kittrell Church of God.
Graveside memorial services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Gary Harper and the Rev. Robert Greene Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Owens Lee; two daughters, Robin Lee Renn of Henderson and Ella Marie Lee Chastain of Daytona, Fla.; four sons, William Oscar Lee of Golden Meadows, La., Carl Ray Lee of Oxford, and David Thurston Lee and James Thomas Lee, both of Henderson; five sisters, Catherine Lee Daglow of Smithfield, Helen Lee Alford of Wilmington, Mattie Lee Stanley of Selma, Margaret Lee Paschall of Norlina and Juanita Lee Viands of Baltimore; four brothers, Tasso Lee of Smithfield, Jessie “Joe” Lee of Sanford, Larry Lee of Pine Level and Isaac Wayne Lee of Lake Head, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thurston Thomas Lee, and one sister, Magdeline Lee Parker.
The family will receive friends at the home at 391 Kittrell Road.

Leonard Terry

WARRENTON -- Leonard Terry, 75, of Route 1, Manson, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001. A Warren County native, he was the son of the late George Andrew Terry and Eliza Walker Terry.
At an early age, he joined the Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ, where he served as a member of the Deacon Board, All Male Chorus and Senior Choir. He was a dedicated, faithful member.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ in Manson by the Rev. Charlie Leath. Burial will be in the Terry family cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Rosa H. Terry; two sons, Leonard Leon Terry and Bernell Terry, both of Manson; a brother, William H. Terry of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view at the funeral home today until 8 p.m. and will lie in state for one hour before the service at the church.
The family will meet with friends at the home.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ Deacon Board. Active pallbearers will be Christopher Terry, Reginald Terry, Costel Evans, Garrick Terry, Darnell Evans and John J. Evans.
Arrangements are by Brown’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Samuel H. Brown

HENDERSON -- Samuel H. Brown, 71, of Christian Care of Henderson died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Christian Care of Henderson.
Arrangements are by Williams Funeral Home.

Steven J. Owens

HENDERSON -- Steven Junious Owens, 39, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, after a brief illness. He was the son of Sophia Thomas of Baltimore and William Thomas of Henderson. He was a native of Henderson and later moved to Baltimore.
He attended Franklin Roosevelt Grade School and graduated from Owings Mills High School. He was employed by Maryland Cup until his health failed.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are daughter Alexis Cara Cockey and two brothers, Jerry Keith Owens of Baltimore and William Owens of Irvington, N.J.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Reisterstown Baptist Church in Baltimore.
Local arrangements were by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

Olivia M. Canada

HENDERSON -- Olivia Miles Canada, 89, of 124 Carolina Ave. died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in Britthaven Nursing Care. She was a native of Arkansas and the daughter of the late Alvin and Eveline Miles.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert M. Burnett. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are her daughter, Rosetta C. Hargrove of Henderson; two sons, William Tucker Canada Jr. of Chapel Hill and Ricque L. Robinson of Warrenburg, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Rosetta Hargrove, 124 Carolina Ave.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home on South Garnett Street.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

William Hendricks

NORLINA -- William Hendricks of Norlina died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Norlina. The Rev. William Ragland, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Beatrice H. Bolden and Alice H. Campbell, both of New York City; two stepdaughters, Mamie L. Kersey of Norlina and Sallie Hargrove of Warrenton; one stepson, Norman Garnes of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Robert Engram

WARRENTON -- Robert Engram died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. He was the former husband of the late Lucille Broady Engram of Roanoke, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Lovely Hill Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Edward Harrington. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Engram of Henderson; three grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Starling of the Bronx, N.Y.; and one brother, Rufus “Bud” Engram of the Bronx.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. Friday until being taken to the church one hour before the services Saturday.
Arrangements are by Hawkins Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Alice S. Hendricks

WARRENTON -- Alice Shearin Hendricks, 99, of Warren Hills Nursing Center died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mattie Pearl Brinson
ELBERON, Va. -- Mattie Pearl Brinson, 68, a resident of Walkers Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in Suffolk, Va. A native of Henderson, she was a retired waitress from Farmers Restaurant in Sharpsburg and was a member of Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church in Elberon.
Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. in Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. Donald Ray Jones. Graveside services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Liberty Vance United Church of Christ at Epsom by the Rev. Charlie Chappell.
She is survived by her husband, Frank P. Brinson; one daughter, Shirley Allgood of
Henderson; one sister, Ada White of Henderson; six brothers, Albert Perdue, Kenneth Perdue and Roy Perdue, all of Henderson, Junie Perdue and Wilton Perdue, both of
Canada, and Hartwell Perdue of Chesapeake, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are by the Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, Va., and local arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home of Henderson.

Eva R. Eastwood

HENDERSON -- Eva Ross Eastwood, 94, of 1504 Berry Avenue, Henderson, N.C., died Wednesday, December 12, 2001, at her home.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Zedekiah Thomas and Lillian White Ross. She was the widow of Battle S. Eastwood. She was preceded in death by a son, Henry A. Phillips.
Mrs. Eastwood was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m., in Sunset Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Cam Ford.
Surviving are Ricky and Dianne E. White of the home; their children, Tracy White and Ritchie White; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Vance County chapter of the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 914, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ralph C. Haddock

FUQUAY-VARINA -- Ralph Caswell Haddock, age 88, a resident of Windsor Point Retirement Center and a former resident of 2506 Westover Drive, Henderson, died Wednesday at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary. He was a native of Coles Co., Illinois, the son of the late Harvey and Mae Shoemaker Haddock, and was a retired construction manager for Roses Stores, where he worked for thirty-three years.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees, he served during World War II in the Philippine and Aleutian islands. He was also a member of the American Legion. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University, where he played on the football team, and was a former schoolteacher in Charlotte, N.C. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Henderson, he was a former deacon and ACTS volunteer. A master wood craftsman, he was also a car and sports enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Harriett Wearn Thompson Haddock of the home; two sons, Ralph Caswell “Chip” Haddock Jr. and wife Gail of Orlando, Florida, and John Thompson Haddock and wife Carolyn of Henderson; four grandchildren, Ralph Caswell Hadock III and wife Lucy of Troy, Mich., Kristen Haddock Roy and husband Derek of New York, N.Y., Martha Kathryn Haddock of Raleigh, and John Hamilton Haddock of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the J.M. White Funeral Home from 10:30 to noon on Saturday. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 2 by the Rev. Rick Brand.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Henderson, or to ACTS, 305 S. Chestnut Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

John E. Hargrove

MACON -- John Edward Hargrove, 58, of Macon died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.
