Brensia E. Champ

RICHMOND, Va. -- Brensia “Tuss” Elizabeth Champ, 38, of 2816 Fairfield Ave., Richmond, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, in Virginia. She was a native of Palmer Springs, Va., and the daughter of Elizabeth Champ of Henderson and the late John Champ.
She attended the Mecklenburg County school system and was a 1982 graduate of Northern Vance High School. She was employed by Americal and Royal Home Fashions during her stay in Vance County until moving to Richmond. She was most recently employed at Tyson Chicken and Deans Foods.
She was a member of Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ, where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today by the Revs. Annie Brooks and Elizabeth Brame and Elder Clarence Dale. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, is one daughter, Nakeyia Reneé Champ of the home; and five sisters, Sharon Coleman, Patricia Jones, Barbara Champ and Helen Champ, all of Henderson, and Bridgett Sheffield of Richmond.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Bennie S. Johnson Jr.

HENDERSON -- Bennie Samuel Johnson Jr., 60, of 234 Orange St. died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at his residence. He was a Vance County native.
He was a former employee of Rose’s Department Stores and ABC stores.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Melvin Solomon. Burial will be in Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Alma Williams Johnson; six sons, Bennie S. Johnson III of the home, Louis Haywood of Houston, Leon Haywood of Elizabeth, N.J., and James Haywood, Christopher Haywood and Cleveland Haywood, all of Henderson; six daughters, Loretta Terry, Lillian Richardson, Louise Haywood, Diane Macklin, Linda Hawkins and Jackie Haywood, all of Henderson; three brothers, Elroy Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Johnson of Boston and Eddie Kearney of Thomasville; three sisters, Martha Johnson of Raleigh and Catherine Noble and Ann Solomon, both of Henderson; 29 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Bennie Bobbitt

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Bennie Bobbitt, 81, of Chrysler Avenue died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at St. Clares Hospital. He was a native of Franklin County and the son of the late Thomas and Cynthia Bobbitt. He was the widower of Bessie L. Bobbitt, his wife of 42 years.
He moved to Schenectady after World War II and lived there until the death of his wife. He worked for General Electric for 40 years, retiring in 1985.
He moved to Kansas and lived there until he became ill and moved back to Schenectady to be with his family. He was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church. He was also a gardener and a fisherman.
Surviving are his children, Rebecca Roberts of Greenville, S.C., Regina Jenkins of Georgia, Bennie Bobbitt Jr. of Philadelphia, Lloyd Bobbitt of Charlotte, Numil Bobbitt of Rotterdam, N.Y., Christopher Bobbitt of Newburgh, N.Y., Leffon Bobbitt of South Glens Falls, N.Y., and Olivia Adams, Beverly Gray Bobbitt, Cecilia Marie Bobbitt, Thomas Bobbitt and Gregory Bobbitt of Schenectady; 39 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Alice Bobbitt.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Community Church of God and Christ in Schenectady. Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Saratoga National cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Bethel Community Church of God and Christ.
Arrangements are by Light’s Funeral Home of Schenectady.

Robert L. Bullocks Sr.

HENDERSON — Robert Lee Bullocks Sr., 62, of 210 Chestnut Alley died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at his residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

LueVennia Cooper

WARREN COUNTY — LueVennia Cooper, 91, formerly of Warren County, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in Newport News, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Odell Baptist Church in Littleton by the Rev. Milton Jones. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Luegennie Milam of Warrenton, Kate Seigler and Nora Cooper, both of Newport News, Va., and Pennie Jennings of Hampton, Va.; five sons, Walter Cooper of Virginia Beach, Va., John and Lewis Cooper, both of Vaughan, Merldon Cooper of Norlina, and Manson Cooper of Lynchburg, Va.; 42 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; and 42 great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

NEW YORK — Obie Hawkins died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in New York.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Bessie L. Parham

HENDERSON — Bessie Lawson Parham, 60, of 1838 N.C. 39 South died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Admiral Dewey and Bertha Pearl Nichols Lawson. She was the widow of Robert Sterling Parham Sr.
She was a homemaker and a member of Harriett Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Ricky Easter and Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are four daughters, Bonnie P. Evans, Patricia P. Norwood, Deborah P. Boyd and Mary P. Satterwhite, all of Henderson; three sons, Robert S. Parham Jr. of the home and Charles E. Parham and Timothy S. Parham, both of Henderson; two sisters, Gladys L. Winfield of Richmond, Va., and Elsie L. Matthews of Norlina; a brother, Paul Lawson of La Cross, Va.; and 13 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ronald E. Norwood, Tracey A. Satterwhite, Woodrow I. Boyd Sr., Donald W. Norwood, Keith Creech, Joel Moss and David E. Satterwhite.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

Ahmed A.N. Sawat

HENDERSON — Ahmed Ali Nasser Sawat, 30, of 118 Rockspring St. died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Yemen and the son of the late Ali Sawat and Pibh Mrebic. He was the husband of Zhor Khled.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Islamic Center Masjidal-Huda in Rocky Mount. Interment was in the Islamic section of Rocky Mount City cemetery.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by one son and one daughter, both of the home; three brothers; and one sister.
Arrangements were by Williams Funeral Home.

William J. Trotman

CHARLESTON, S.C. — William Joseph Trotman, 49, of Charleston died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001. He was a native of Henderson and the son of Rebecca Mayo Trotman and the late Harry DeHaven Trotman.
He graduated from Henderson High School, attended East Carolina University and was employed by the state of South Carolina.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Frances Cain Trotman of Charleston; a sister, Rebecca Trotman Jones of Henderson; three brothers, Harry DeHaven Trotman of Parkton, Paul Robin Trotman of Wilmington and James Mayo Trotman of Baltimore; and two sons, William Joseph Trotman Jr. of Greensboro and Andrew Cain Trotman of the home.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday.
Arrangements are by McCallister & Smith of Charleston.

Donald E. Williams

HENDERSON — Donald Edward Williams, 70, of 212 Craig St. died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance County, son of the late Charles Bryant and Nellie Griffith Williams and widower of Janet Faucette Williams. He was a retired employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Gary Harper and the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by two daughters, Yvonne W. Ayscue of Epsom and Cheryl W. Jarrell of Henderson; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Craig Street.
The J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of services.

James E. Barrier Sr.

HENDERSON -- James Edward Barrier Sr., age 80, a former resident of 1202 McCoin Ave., died Friday morning in a local nursing home. He was a native of Florence County, S.C., and was the son of the late Edward P. and Annie Hutchinson Barrier. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He was a retired foreman with the N.C. Department of Transportation and was a retired area farrier. He was a member of the N.C. State Employees Association and American Legion Post No. 60 in Henderson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 31, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles Mustian and the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Griffith Barrier of Henderson; one daughter, Pamela Ruth Barrier of Henderson; one son, James E. Barrier Jr. and wife Kay Roberson Barrier of Henderson; two sisters, Bertie B. Vick of Henderson and Lida B. Wright of Satellite Beach, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles P. Barrier of Tallahassee, Florida, and William P. Barrier of Panama City, Florida; two sisters, Alice B. Black of Southern Pines and Clea B. Lawrence of Henderson.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Jimmy and Kay Barrier at 70 Terrace Avenue.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Bobby Vick, Dolan Lawrence, Charles Lawrence, Greg McFarland, Curtis Tyndall, H.E. Tyndall and Dennis Renn.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Doris J. Bullock

VAUGHAN -- Doris Jean Bullock, 49, of Vaughan died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at United Solid Rock Faith Ministries in Warrenton by Bishop Moore H. Bynum, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Willie Lee Bullock; two daughters, Wanda Renee Bullock and Regina Bullock, both of Vaughan; one son, Gary L. Bullock of Littleton; one grandson; her parents, Lonnie and Ethel “Dot” Harrison of the Embro community; one sister, Patricia A. Hendricks of Embro; three brothers, Stephenson Harrison, Leonard Harrison and Gregory Harrison, all of Embro; and her grandmother, Anna Carter of Warrenton.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton until being taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

James A. Bullock

HENDERSON -- James Alston Bullock, 72, of 1285 David St. died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Walter Bullock and Viola Hawkins Bullock.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Granville Baptist Church in Granville County. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Lessie M. Bullock; two daughters, Yvonne Simon and Michelle Darton, both of Boston; four sons, James A. Bullock Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and James Steven Bullock, David Bullock and Kenneth Bullock, all of Boston; three sisters, Corine Seward, Margaret Henderson and Betty Brown, all of Boston; three brothers, the Rev. Richard Bullock, the Rev. George Bullock and Robert Bullock, all of Boston; and numerous grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

HENDERSON -- Robert Lee Bullock Sr., 62, of 210 Chestnut Alley died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of Lillie Bullock Debnam.
He joined St. Paul United Church of Christ at an early age.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Davis Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Turrentine. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Emma Hargrove Bullock; two sons, Erwin O. Hargrove and Robert Lee Bullock Jr., both of Henderson; his mother, Lillie B. Debnam of Henderson; two sisters, Barbara Bennett and Clementine Robinson, both of Henderson; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Emma Bullock, 125 Bearpond Road, Lot 7, and the residence of Lillie Debnam, 728 John St.
The family has requested no viewing.

Juanita H. Davis

HENDERSON -- Juanita Hughes Davis, 63, of 324 Charles St. died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Granville County, daughter of the late Curtis Vance and Annie Mae Summerlin Hughes and widow of Joseph Arrington Davis Jr. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Rose Chapel of First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles M. Cook. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by three sons, Joseph Arrington Davis III, John Ashley Davis and Mark Quinton Davis Sr., all of Henderson; one daughter, Scarlett Ann Davis of Henderson; one sister, Shelby Jean Hughes Fuller of Henderson; four brothers, Winford Hughes, Norman Hughes and Jerry Hughes, all of Oxford, and Curtis Hughes of Clarksville, Va.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Danny Hughes, Jack Peoples, Mike West, Joey Davis, Joshua Davis, Billy Faulkner, Sam Jones and Gene Daniels.

Agnes E. Finch

FAYETTEVILLE -- Agnes Eaves Finch, 73, of 4933 Redwood Drive died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at her residence.
She was involved in the Sunshine Meals on Wheels in Fayetteville and Hope Mills. She retired as a division manager with Rose’s Department Stores and was a member of the Arrow Lake Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Brent Rector. A private family interment will be held in LaFayette Memorial Park.
Surviving are three daughters, Kitti Joe Finch, Lori Kiel and Tami Kay Botello, all of Fayetteville; two brothers, Theodore Eaves of Henderson and Thomas Eaves of Louisburg; one sister, Ruth Brame of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the lounge of First Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Day Care Center, c/o First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson St., Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.

Edward Gregory

OXFORD -- Edward Gregory, 83, of 313 Front St. died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran and a member of Hester-Crews American Legion Post 166. He was a retired employee of the Oxford post office.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lacy Joyner. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Vertilia Oakley Gregory; three sons, Ronald Gregory of Henderson, Cliff Gregory of Henderson, Ky., and Tim Gregory of Raleigh; one daughter, Yvonne Kittrell of Bowie, Md.; one brother, Ellis “Pete” Gregory of Oxford; six sisters, Addie Gregory, Anice Sherill and Dorothy Gregory, all of Oxford, Rosa Baker of Warrenton, and Josephine Williams and Nannie Gregory, both of East Orange, N.J.; and 10 grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors one hour before the services at the church.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.

WARRENTON -- Obie Hawkins, 65, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in New York.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at Fork Chapel Baptist Church in Inez by the Rev. Wendell Crummy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five sons, Rommie Sellers, Earl Hawkins, Jerome “Larry” Hawkins, Glen Hawkins and Ronald Hawkins; three daughters, Genell Hawkins, Darlene Hawkins and Inez Hawkins; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Tommy and Ray Hawkins and Fuller Gattison; and six sisters, Marjorie Campbell, Jeanette Johnson, Annie Rogers, Sandra Wilkins, Debra Harrell and Bonnie Crummy.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Almeta Mayfield

WARREN COUNTY -- Almeta Mayfield, 43, formerly of Warren County, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, in Richmond, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Virginia by the Rev. Taylor, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her parents, Jennie and Joseph Mayfield of Warrenton; two sisters, Jennie M. Henderson and Mary Jones, both of Richmond; and four brothers, Joseph Jr., William, John Wayne and Gary Mayfield, all of Soul City.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Frances H. Maynard

WARRENTON -- Frances Hunt Maynard, 86, of Colonial Lodge, 144 N. Main St., died Friday morning, Dec. 28, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Warren County and was the daughter of the late John and Viola Short Hunt and widow of Earl Howard Maynard Sr. She was a retired private-duty nurse.
She was a member of the Sulpher Springs Baptist Church and the adult Sunday school class and was a former Sunday school teacher and a former leader of the Girls Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sulpher Springs Baptist Church by Dr. Julian Mills. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by one daughter, Patsy M. Teague of Indianapolis; one son, Alvin Maynard of Richmond, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ralph Maynard, Cameron Maynard, Doug Roberts, Ronny West, Howard Maynard, Mike Reavis, Tony Hill and Henry Teague.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home of Henderson.
