MSgt. Andrew J. Wilson

GRAHAM -- Master Sgt. Andrew “Boots” Jackson Wilson, USMC, Ret., 84, of Graham died peacefully Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Andrea, surrounded by family and friends. He will always be remembered as a devoted father and grandfather. His quick wit and smile made him a friend to everyone.
MSgt. Wilson was born in Vance Co. He was the last surviving child of fourteen of the late Obadiah O. and Elizabeth Robertson Wilson. MSgt. Wilson retired from the United States Marine Corps after 30 years’ service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Kunkel Wilson.
MSgt. Wilson is survived by two daughters, Andrea W. Piland and husband Jim of Durham and Annette Wilson, DVM, and husband Mark Armitage of Graham; a son, Andrew J. Wilson Jr. and wife Julie of Holly Springs; a granddaughter, Cameron Wilson; two grandsons, Ryan Piland and Jackson Wilson; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Thursday 2 p.m. at Rock Spring Baptist Church in Townsville, N.C., with the Rev. Gary Brummitt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham and other times at the home of his daughter, Andrea, 904 Royal Oaks Dr., Durham.
Flowers are acceptable, or memorial contributions may be made to Triangle Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Dr., #101, Durham, N.C. 27704, or Rock Spring Baptist Church, c/o Carol Capps, P.O. Box 296, Townsville, N.C. 27584.

Owen D. Ellington

HENDERSON -- Owen Davis Ellington, 86, formerly of Montgomery Street in Henderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Dewey Turner and Dorch Robinson Ellington. He was the widower of Lillie Raines Ellington.
He was retired after 38 years with Harriet & Henderson Yarns. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha E. Hayes of Kittrell and Betsy G. Medlin of Henderson; two sons, Sol W. Brame of Taylors, S.C., and Arthur L. Brame of Yorktown, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Martha E. Hayes, 622 N. Chavis Road, Kittrell.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home.

H.B. Jordan

OXFORD -- H.B. Jordan died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late James Henry Jordan and Virginia Taylor.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Allen’s Home of Funerals by Brother Keith Bauman. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Howard P. Jordan of Oxford; five sisters, Betty J. Peace, Lucy P. Chavis and Eugene Crews, all of Oxford, Louise Sinclair of Greenville and Elizabeth Mapp of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, James N. Jordan of Irvington, N.J., and James E. Jordan of Boston.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Allen’s Home of Funerals.
Arrangements are by Allen’s Home of Funerals of Oxford.

Francis J. Roble

HENDERSON -- Francis J. “Frank” Roble, 55, of 406-B Rowland St., Henderson, formerly of New Castle, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Jameson Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Rocky Mount and the son of James Roble and Dora Jane Denton Roble of Louisburg.
He was formerly married to Valerie Grabowski.
He was most recently employed as a counselor at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford. He was a therapeutic mentor for VGFW Mental Health Center in Henderson and a counselor for Youth Development Center in New Castle.
He was a Navy veteran of Vietnam, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New Castle, a member of the Triangle Steelers Fan Club in Raleigh, and an avid hunter and golfer.
He received an associate’s degree from Vance-Granville Community College and was attending North Carolina Central University to complete a bachelor’s degree in mental health and criminology.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at William F. DeCarbo Memorial Chapel by the Rev. James Downs. Burial will be in Oak Park cemetery in New Castle.
Surviving are two daughters, Adrienne Trotta-Gaither of San Antonio and Shannon Roble of New Castle, Pa.; one son, Bryan Roble of New Castle; one brother, Randy Roble of Cranberry Township, Pa.; one sister, Marilyn Allen of Washington, D.C.; and one granddaughter.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform a military funeral service rite at the funeral home.
Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at William F. and Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home in New Castle.

Sallie W. Baskerville

HENDERSON -- Sallie White Baskerville, 87, of 4834 Satterwhite Point Road died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the widow of Charlie Baskerville Sr.
She was a member of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard M. Henderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Maxine Baskerville of Elizabeth City; four sons, Charlie Baskerville Jr. of Baltimore and Alexander Baskerville, Leslie Baskerville and Randolph Baskerville, all of Henderson; one brother, Eddie White of Manson; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Samuel Hargrove

HENDERSON -- Samuel Hargrove, 87, of 1313 County Line Road died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native.
He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Townsville Masonic Lodge No. 488 and Antioch United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Antioch United Church of Christ by the Revs. Barry Hargrove and Tina Evans. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Hanks Hargrove; four daughters, Valerie Wimbush of Henderson, Jacqueline Grate of Raleigh, and Mary Stimage and Patricia Richburg, both of East Orange, N.J.; four sons, Bernard Hargrove of East Orange, Samuel Howard Hargrove of River Dale, Ga., Dwight Hargrove of Henderson and Corey Hargrove of Sayreville, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family received visitors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.

Andrew Mangum

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. -- Andrew “Andy” Mangum died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in District Heights after a long battle with cancer.
Surviving are his wife, Lena Mangum; five children, Andrea of Rochester, N.Y., and Lynn, Scott, Dale and Steve of California; one brother, James Mangum; and three sisters, Daisy Abbott, Helen Jenks and Willie Lou Jackson of Henderson.
Memorial services will be held Monday in Oxen Hill, Md.

Melvin Person

KITTRELL -- Melvin Person, 47, of 1530 S. Chavis Road died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.
He was a Vance County native and a former employee of Burlington Industries.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Kittrell. Burial will be in the Person family cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Thomas Person of Franklinton; four daughters, Kimberly Crudup of Henderson and Ebony Person, Monica Person and Alison Person, all of Franklinton; his mother, Roberta Alston Person of Kittrell; two sisters, Dorothy Thornton of Oxford and Mabel Tyus of Durham; three brothers, Charlie Person of Starkville, Miss., and Nathan Person Jr. and William Person, both of Kittrell; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at 447 S. Chavis St., Franklinton.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.

Samuel U. Young II

HENDERSON -- Samuel Unray Young II, infant son of Yram Terry Young and Samuel U. Young Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Sameal Rayquell Young of the home; his maternal grandmother, Elaine Terry Meadows; his paternal grandparents, the Rev. Samuel M. Young and Bettie A. Hargrove Young; and his great-grandparents, Edna E. Andrews Terry, George Howell, James Meadows, Lillian Plummer Meadows, the Rev. Tyler Young Sr., Daisy Young and Patty H. Lewis.
Memorial eulogistic services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Young Memorial Holiness Church by the Rev. Samuel Young, assisted by the Revs. Tracy Turner, Joel Kearney and Walter Young. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service of Henderson.

Mary P. Gee

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Mary Powell Gee, 87, of Warwick Forest Retirement Community in Newport News died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002. She was a former resident of Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Henderson. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the church parlor.
Local arrangements are by J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mattie B.E. Hargrove

HENDERSON -- Mattie Bell Edward Hargrove, 73, of 239 Morgan Road died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Henritta Edwards Burgess and Ellis Burgess.
She attended Vance County public schools and Vance-Granville Community College and was certified in early childhood education.
She joined Mount Zion United Church of Christ, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, president of the missionary for more than 20 years, treasurer for the building fund for many years and Sunday school superintendent. Before retirement, she worked 28 years with the Franklin-Vance-Warren Head Start and with the Vance County Extension and Community Association for more than 30 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ by the Rev. Akeem Wright, assisted by the Rev. Glendora Hargrove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Doris H. Swann of the home and Sarah Hargrove-Taylor of Washington, D.C.; one son, Samuel Hargrove of Henderson; one brother, Wallace Burgess of South Carolina; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service and other times at the residence, 239 Morgan Road.
Honorary pallbearers will be Vance County Extension members.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Robert E. Hargrove Sr.

HENDERSON -- Robert Edward Hargrove Sr., 84, of 741 Warren Bullock Road died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at his residence. He was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the son of the late Robert and Rosa Rollins Hargrove. He was the widower of Bertha Small Hargrove.
He was a member of Antioch United Church of Christ in Townsville. He was educated in the Mecklenburg County public schools.
He farmed for many years. He was retired from Burkhart Carolina Plant.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Hargrove of the home, Linda Bullock of Middleburg, and Mable Kearney and Annie Kearney, both of Newark, N.J.; four sons, Louis Hargrove of Fuquay-Varina, Sidney Hargrove of Newark, Victor Hargrove of Henderson and Robert Hargrove of Townsville; 21 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch United Church of Christ by the Rev. Tina Evans. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will lie in state one hour before the services at the church Sunday.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Floral bearers will be nieces.
The family will receive friends at the home. The body will be on view from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

Lucie Holmes Kelly

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. -- Lucie Holmes Kelly, age 87, of 26 Salem Acres died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002.
Mrs. Kelly was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Franklin County, N.C., and had lived most of her life in Henderson, N.C. She moved to Weaverville in June 1998. Lucie was the daughter of the late Percy C. and Susie Holmes and the wife of the late Cecil Kelly.
Surviving are her son, Charles W. Kelly, and his wife, Libby, of Weaverville, with whom she made her home, and her daughter, Barbara Kelly Woodlief, and her husband, Guy, of Charlotte; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in Elmwood cemetery in Henderson, N.C.

Terrie H. Thornton

OXFORD -- Terrie Hobgood Thornton, 44, of 7179 N.C. 96 North died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the Triangle Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Hope Granville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Northern Granville Middle School.

William R. Allen Sr.

HENDERSON -- William Reed “The Shoeshine Man” Allen Sr., 57, of 919 Pinkston St. died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham. He was the son of the late John Edward Allen and Geneva Henderson Allen.
He was a former employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns and a veteran.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Melvin Solomon. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are one son, William R. Allen II of Henderson; two sisters, Rachael A. Daye of the home and Diane A. Bullock of Kittrell; and one grandchild.
The family will receive visitors at the residence.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.

WARREN COUNTY -- Linnie Boyd, 71, formerly of Warren County, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Beaufont Health Care Center in Richmond, Va.

Surviving are his wife, Sallie Mae Hunt Boyd of Richmond, Va.; four sons, Darnell of Manson, Randy, Brian Keith and Quinton, all of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Delores and Cynthia, both of Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, James of Richmond, Va., and Ulysses of Laurelton, N.Y.; six sisters, Janett of Gaithersburg, Md., Clara of Manson, Katie of Roosevelt, N.Y., Ocerine of Brooklyn, N.Y., Evelyn of Plainfield, N.J., and Maxine of Clinton, Md.

HENDERSON -- Herbert Lee Bullock, 60, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.

Dorothy M. Ellison

HENDERSON -- Dorothy Mayo Ellison, 76, of 1304 N. Pinkston St., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Gussie Alston Mayo and Carter Mayo.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Issac Thomas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Brandom of Oxford and Gussie Ellison of the home; three sons, William Ellison of Henderson, Frank Ellison of Kittrell and Bernard Ellison of the home; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1304 N. Pinkston St.
The body will be on view from 12 to 7 p.m. today and one hour before the service at the church.

Charlotte G.H. Hope

HENDERSON -- Charlotte Gracie Holden Hope, 78, of 648 Abbott Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Duke Medical Center. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of Nora Holden and Warren Brown.
She worked many years at J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Issac Thomas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Hope of Henderson and Mary Ann Dunston of Manchester, Ga.; one son, James T. Hope of Henderson; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of James Hope, 616 Abbott Road.
The body will be on view from 11 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and will be taken to the church one hour before the service.
