HENDERSON -- Leona Brown Smith, 85, of 1536 Raleigh Road died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Brunson, S.C., and the daughter of the late Vincent T. and Sarah Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service by pastor Carson Jones.
Surviving are two sons, Vincent Smith of Henderson and Leonard Smith of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The body is on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Sgt. James Blalock Jr.

OXFORD -- Sgt. James Blalock Jr. (ret), 60, of 725 Baker St., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore, Md. He was a Granville County native.
He was a retired veteran with 29 years of service. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal Bronze Clasp W/3 loops, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Sharpshooter Qualification Badge.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. George Cotton. Entombment will be in Meadowview Memorial Park with military honors performed by Honors Detail, Delta Company, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg.
The family will receive visitors at 107 Green St.
The body will lie in state from 10 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Lillie S. Cooke

OXFORD -- Lillie Saunders Cooke, 81, formerly of 200 Maplewood Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Franklin Regional Hospital. She was a native of Richmond, Va., and the daughter of the late Claude and Mary Webster Saunders. She was the widow of William Rand Cooke.
She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and was retired from C.G. Credle School.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. T.J. Kollar and Dr. Jim Whitehead. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Cooke Weaver of Franklinton and Margaret Cooke Ivey Jones of Henderson; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at 1619 Graham Ave., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Mary B. Lyon Gibson

STEM -- Mary B. Lyon Gibson, 85, of Freeport, N.Y., died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in Freeport. She was a Granville County native.
She was a former member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Creedmoor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John Gooch. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Garden.
Surviving is one brother, Bradley Lyon of Stem.
The body will lie in state from 10 to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Lee T. Henderson

OXFORD -- Lee Toney Henderson, 70, of 500 Salem Road, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native.
He was a former employee of Granville County Department of Social Services. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he was a member of the deacon board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Ray Allsberry and Mack Timberlake Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Edmonds Henderson; his mother, Dinah Allen Henderson of Oxford; two brothers, Eugene Henderson Jr. and Robert Thomas Henderson, both of Oxford; and one sister, Nuevelle Hilliard of Oxford.
The body will lie in state from 10 to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Merlin McCaden

OXFORD -- Merlin McCaden, 86, formerly of 112-B Peace St., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Brantwood Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Allsberry. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Maddie Thorpe of Oxford; and one brother, Wilson McCaden of Oxford.
The family will receive visitors at the residence.
Viewing was held from 10 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.

Virginia B. Morris

WARREN COUNTY -- Virginia Burnette Morris, 79, formerly of Warren County, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in Pennsylvania.
Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

John H. Perry Sr.

HENDERSON -- John Henry Perry Sr., 74, of 336 Foster Road, Lot #5, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Franklin County native and the son of the late Classie Perry and King Solomon.
He retired from Harriett & Henderson Yarns, Inc.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Issac Thomas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Obery Perry of the home; six sons, Randie Perry, John Perry Jr., Wayne Perry, Glenn Perry, James Perry, Leandris Perry, all of Henderson; five daughters, Classie Mae Brown of Louisburg, Elsie Hope, Patricia Perry, Juanita Teasley and Carrie Cheek, all of Henderson; four brothers, Charles Macon of Henderson, Fred Solomon of Louisburg, Weldon Solomon of Albermarle and Roger Solomon of New York, N.Y.; four sisters, Gracie Moore of Louisburg, Beulah Bryant of Albermarle, Mamie Yarborough of Plainfield, N.J., and Rebecca Brown of Henderson; 39 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 336 Foster Road, Lot. No. 5.
The body will be on view until taken to the church one hour before the service.

T.P. Rose Jr.

HENDERSON -- Theodore Paul “T.P.” Rose Jr., 83, of 4729 Warrenton Road, Norlina, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at his home. He was a native of Waycross, Ga., and was the son of the late Theodore Paul Rose Sr. and Edith Beardsley Rose.
He was a retired farmer and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department. A lifelong member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, he served in numerous church offices, including president of the men’s Sunday school class, Sunday school teacher, choir and chairman of the administrative board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cokesbury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael E. Rocheleau. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Mae Hendrick Rose; a daughter, Jacqueline Rose Norwood of Norlina; a son, Robert Russell Rose of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Edith Rose Chambers of Melbourne, Fla., and Annie Mae Rose Williams of Henderson; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Russell Norwood; and two sisters, Rebecca Rose Frazier and Hattie Rose Rose.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Julian Oliver, Ed Blue, Steven Flannagan, William Pulley, J.C. Harton, Wilton Wortham, Elmus Gray Pegram and Buster Stainback. The men’s Sunday school class of Cokesbury United Methodist Church and the members of Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall Fund, 2440 S. Cokesbury Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.

Fannie A. Ayscue
HENDERSON -- Fannie Lillian Ayscue Ayscue, age 89, a resident of Britthaven Nursing Home and a former resident of the Bearpond community, died Monday night at Maria Parham Hospital. She was born in Franklin County to the late Wiley and Lola Rowe Ayscue and was the widow of Buck Bryant Ayscue. She was a homemaker and member of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donnie Perkinson and the Rev. Aubrey Florence. Burial will follow in the Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Audrey A. Ayscue and husband Jack, Dorothy A. Beckham and husband T.T., and Bonnie A. Spraggins and husband Ivery, all of Henderson; a daughter-in-law, Barbara G. Ayscue of Henderson; three sisters, Kathleen A. Wright of Henderson, Gertrude A. Rowe of Rocky Mount, and Betty Louise A. Kilham of Portsmouth, Virginia; two brothers, Ralph Ayscue of Hendersonville and Gene Ayscue of Tomahawk, Kentucky; twenty-one grandchildren; forty-eight great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Margaret A. McGhee and Ida Faye Ayscue; and five sons, Charles “Nucky” Ayscue, Bryant Wayne Ayscue, Tommy Ray Ayscue, Larry Ayscue and Billy Ayscue.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Dot and T.T. Beckham Jr. at 820 South Lake Lodge Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Hope Baptist Church, 741 Dabney Rd., Henderson, N.C. 27537, or to Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ, c/o Christy Pulley, 771 Edwards Rd., Henderson, N.C. 27537.

Fannie Clark

MANSON -- Fannie Clark, 59, of Manson died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Nellie E. Pulley

KITTRELL -- Nellie Estes Pulley, 70, of 120 Smith St. died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a native of Granville County and was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Lizzie Brodgen Estes. She was a retired employee of Americal and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Kittrell.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Sossaman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Linwood Pulley; one daughter, Vickie P. Collins of Henderson; two sons, Gary A. Pulley of Oxford and Robert B. “Bennie” Pulley of Henderson; two sisters, Morrison Cash and Bobbie Lou Ray, both of Durham; one brother, Dewey Estes of Creedmoor; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Wayne “Duck” Pulley.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons Kevin Collins, Patrick Collins, Justin Pulley and Jason Pulley and nephews Gene Cash and Dennis Ray.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Clanton E. Smith

OXFORD -- Clanton Earl Smith, 72, of 7132 Mountain Road, Oxford, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Rev. Frank Smith and Hattie Bell Taylor Smith.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, a well-known farmer and a member of the Gold Mine Lodge No. 343.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Michael Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Hugene Fields, assisted by the Revs. Michael Epps and Dan Terry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Daniels Smith; two daughters, Linda Smith-Cobb of Henderson and Barbara Jean Heggie of Staten Island, N.Y.; four sons, Stanley Smith of Weldon, Derrick Smith of Oxford, Leonard Smith of Stovall and Eric Smith of Durham; three sisters, Geneva Watkins of New York and Odessa Bass and Annie Farmer, both of Baltimore; two stepsisters, Vivan Ross of Clarksville, Va., and Teresa Smith of Oxford; two brothers, Marvin Smith of Baltimore and Calvin Smith of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Michael Creek Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Bennie A. Solomon

HENDERSON -- Bennie Allen Solomon, 68, of 158 Bullock St. died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.

Fannie Clark
MANSON -- Fannie Clark, 59, of Manson died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ridgeway Baptist Church in Ridgeway by the Rev. W.T. Ramey III. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sisters, Lucille Alexander of Manson, Margaret Russell of Norlina and Annie Mae Russell of Newark, N.J.; two brothers, Samuel Russell of Manson and John H. Russell of Havlock; one stepson, George Hicks of Raleigh; and one step-grandchild.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Vivian P. Eaton

HENDERSON -- Vivian Perry Eaton, 80, of 429 Hamilton St. died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.
The family will be at the home.
Arrangements will be announced by Garnes Funeral Services.

John F. Frank

SEVEN VALLEYS, Pa. -- John F. Frank, 84, of Seven Valleys died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at York Hospital in York, Pa. He was a native of Milwaukee and the son of the late Nellie and Herbert E. Frank.
He was a writer, retired professor of writing at City University of New York, and author of “Johnney Appleseed” and numerous other anthologies. He also wrote a book of poetry and numerous other poems.
He received his bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University in Chicago in 1939, master of arts degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1952, and an A.B.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans chapter in Brooklyn, N.Y. He also was a member of Zion United Lutheran Church in Seven Valleys.
Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion United Lutheran Church in Seven Valleys by the Rev. J. Thomas Shelley. military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will immediately follow the memorial service at the church. A private burial will be held.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Page G. Frank, and a daughter, Allison Esposito of Red Oak, Texas.
Arrangements are by Cremation Direct Service of the John W. Keffer Funeral Home of York.

Mary B. Gibson

OXFORD -- Mary B. Gibson, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in Freeport, N.Y. She was a native of Granville County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Chapel in Oxford.
Surviving is one brother, Bradley Lyon of Stem.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.

Mattie B.E. Hargrove

HENDERSON -- Mattie Bell Edward Hargrove, 73, of 239 Morgan Road died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Vance County native, the daughter of the late Henritta Edwards Burgess and Ellis Burgess.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 9, at Mount Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Akeem Wright officiating and the Rev. Glendora Hargrove assisting. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris H. Swann of the home and Sarah Hargrove-Taylor of Washington, D.C.; one son, Samuel Hargrove of Henderson; one brother, Wallace Burgess of South Carolina; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were by Mary-Davis Royster Funeral Service.
