Lucy J. Allen
HENDERSON -- Lucy Jones Allen, 86, of 3155 Kelly Road died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Allen Henderson Jones and Catherine Townes Jones.
She was educated in the public schools of Vance County and continued her education in the Philadelphia School of Practical Nursing.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ. The Rev. Joann Allen will officiate, assisted by the Revs. Akeem Wright, Leroy Anderson and Glendora Hargrove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Allen; one brother, John Allen Jones of Henderson; two sisters, Thelma “Kitty” J. McRavin of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Leona J. Frazier of Baltimore; and six stepchildren, Linwood Allen, Marion Garrett, Joseph Allen Jr., Matthew Allen, Jean C. Allen and John D. Allen.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3155 Kelly Road.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service until being taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the service.

Mary E. Bradley
GASTON -- Mary E. Bradley, 51, formerly of Warren County, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Richmond, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon today at H.D. Pope Funeral Home Chapel in Roanoke Rapids by Brother Henry Gatling of Richmond. Burial will follow in the Garner family cemetery in Gaston.
Surviving are her husband, Tyrone Bradley; one son, Eldridge Lamont Garner of Richmond; her mother, Plummie Squire Garner; four brothers, William Garner Jr., Atlas Garner and Lewis Garner, all of Gaston, and Earlie Garner of Warrenton; three sisters, Earlene Martin of Roanoke Rapids and Jearlean Broady and Barbara Broady, both of Gaston; one adopted daughter, Angela Garner; two adopted sons, Stanley and Larry Boone; and one adopted granddaughter.

Haywood R. Evans
HENDERSON -- Haywood Renn Evans, 81, of 845 Eastside Drive died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at his home. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Thomas John Evans and Margaret Renn Evans Croom. He was the widower of Mary Newman Evans and Ann Starkey Evans and was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie H. Evans.
He was a retired carpenter, a retired security guard with Allied Security in Raleigh, and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Henderson.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Tim Burgess.
Surviving are his wife, Lessie Burgess Evans; a brother, Donald Powell Evans of Greenville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Brenda Thaxton Platt of Madison; a stepson, John W. Thaxton of Greensboro; and two grandsons.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Edith B. Fleming
HENDERSON -- Edith Bullock Fleming, 72, of 70 Nutbush Farm Road died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late John Wesley Bullock Sr. and Louise Hope Bullock. She was the widow of Thomas Alexander “Buddy” Fleming.
She was a retired cafeteria manager at the former Kerr Lake School and a member of Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Cokesbury United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Danita Fleming Baum of the home; three sisters, Dorothy B. Keeton of Stovall and Margaret B. Matthews and Frances B. Pegram, both of Henderson; and a brother, John Wesley Bullock Jr. of Goldsboro.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Wayne Pegram, Marvin Keeton, Pete Peoples, Nathan Fleming, Chris Claiborne, Donnie Bullock, Tony Keeton and Frank Claiborne.

Kenneth C. Newton
RICHMOND, Va. -- Kenneth Cherry Newton, 54, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, in Richmond. He was the son of the late Walter Newton and Pauline Newton.
He was a mechanic.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wise cemetery by the Rev. Robert Yates.
Surviving are three sons, Kevin Newton and Eddie Newton, both of Richmond, and Kenneth Newton Jr. of Henderson; one sister, Nancy of South Boston, Va.; and five brothers, Robert Newton of Rawlings, Va., Buddy Newton of Amelia, Va., and Dave Newton, Donald Newton and Walter Newton, all of Richmond.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home before the funeral service.

Leon P. Pridgen
NORLINA -- Leon Powell Pridgen, 82, died Wednesday at Maria Parham Hospital. Mr. Pridgen was a Warren County native born May 19, 1919, to the late Jesse Carlton Pridgen and Mattie Powell Pridgen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Harper Pridgen.
Mr. Pridgen was a member of Norlina Baptist Church, the owner and operator of Pridgen’s Grocery Market for 36 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The Revs. Elton Cooke and Douglas Cutts will conduct funeral services 11 a.m. Friday at Norlina Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Warren Dale cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Larry Carlton Pridgen of Chapel Hill and Robert Wilson Pridgen of Norlina; one sister, Jessie Lee Pridgen McAuslan of Norlina; and one brother, Carson S. Pridgen of Norlina.
Serving as pallbearers will be Hector Aycock, Jimmy McAuslan, Jimmy Overby, Bruce Perkinson, W.E. Pridgen and James White.
Memorials may be made to the Norlina Baptist Church, P.O. Box 367, Norlina, N.C. 27563.

Alice F. Bottoms
OXFORD -- Alice Floyd Bottoms, 93, of 302 Prospect Ave. died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. She was a native of Norfolk and Newport News, Va., and the daughter of the late Charlie and Annie Hudson Floyd.
She was a member of Delrayno Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Delrayno Baptist Church by the Revs. Hilton Moore Jr. and Charles E. Mieir. Burial will follow in Gardner’s Baptist Church cemetery in Warren County.
Surviving are three daughters, Faye B. Roberts and Louise B. Morris Elliott, both of Oxford, and Anne B. Hicks of Norlina; two sons, Billy Bottoms of Winston-Salem and Sammy Bottoms of Oxford; two sisters, Louise F. Schneider of Lynchburg, Va., and Dot F. Smiley of Columbia, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home, 302 Prospect Ave.

Dolly J.W. Harwell
HENDERSON -- Dolly Jene Williams Harwell of Henderson died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Warren County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Douglas Judkins. Burial will follow in the Williams family cemetery in Centerville.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas B. Harwell of Peters-burg, Va.; one daughter, Malika Williams of the home; one son, Derrick Williams of the home; her mother and stepfather, Mildred and Wannie Basker-ville of Henderson; her father, Eugene Williams of Centerville; three sisters, Florence Homes of Columbus, Ohio, and Sandra Yancey and Kristi Baskerville, both of Henderson; one brother, Wannie Baskerville Jr. of Greensboro; and one grandson.

Annie B. Holland
KITTRELL -- Annie Beatrice Dalehite Holland, 75, of 68 Smith St. died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Louise M. Conn Dalehite.
She was educated in the Durham County Schools and was affiliated with a nondenominational church.
She was employed by Ray Jewelers in Durham for 20 years. Then the family moved to Maryland, where she retired from the accounting department of District Photo. After retirement, the family moved back to Kittrell, where she was employed by J.P. Taylor Tobacco.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday night at 7 in the chapel of the J.M. White Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald Vaughn. Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the National Memorial Park/King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, Va.
She is survived by her husband, Frank C. Holland Jr.; one son, Joseph Shane Dickerson of Kittrell; one stepsister, Lucy Conn Stanton of Henderson; and one brother, George Conn of Durham.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 5 until 6:45 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ron Rigsbee, George Rigsbee, Billy Stanton, Billy Conn, Claude Floyd, Dale Floyd and Tommy Chandler.

OXFORD -- Mary Bridges Person, 72, of 4029 Dooster St. died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Granville Medical Center.

Carlie L. Powell
WARRENTON -- Carlie Larent Powell, 95, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at his home in Warrenton. He was the son of the late Calvin Wyatt Powell and Miranda Farrington Powell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the R.H. Greene Chapel in Warrenton. Burial will follow in the Markham Memorial Garden, 3510 University Drive, Durham.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Harris Powell; and three sons, Carlie Walter Powell of New Orleans, Leon Wyatt Powell of Richmond, Va., and Reginald Mansfield Powell of Carrboro.
The body will be on view at the funeral home Monday until time for the services Tuesday.

John H. Thomas
HENDERSON -- John Henry Thomas, 58, has died.
He was a native of Hender-son and the son of the late Eddie Raymond Thomas Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Watkins.
After relocating to Boston, he joined the Holy Tabernacle Church in Dorchester, Mass.
Surviving are his mother, Elizabeth Brown; two sisters, Jeanie Marjorie and Delia Elizabeth; and two brothers, William J. and Earl Thomas. All live in Massachusetts.
Funeral services were conducted Feb. 15 at Greater Generation Tabernacle Church by the Rev. Joe L. Smith. Burial followed in Fairview cemetery in Hyde Park, Mass.
Local services are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Services.
Nannie B. Ayscue
WARRENTON -- Nannie B. Ayscue, 83, of the Snow Hill community, Warrenton, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Warren Hill Nursing Home in Warrenton.

Robert Froeber
WINSTON SALEM -- Robert Jones Froeber, died March 4, at Arbor Acres.
A memorial service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 6, at 2:30 p.m.
Bob was born January 2, 1919 in his much loved Winston-Salem, N.C. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston and went on to attend The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and the U.S. military Academy at West Point, N.Y. During World War II, he served in the Field Artillery Division. He was stationed in the South Pacific for over three years and concluded his service with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and commanded the 426 Field Artillery Battalion for two years.
Bob’s professional life spanned a period of sixty years during which time he devoted his extraordinary talent and vision to the field of hosiery. For the first twenty-five years, he worked for Hanes Hosiery Company. He was then asked to create a hosiery division for J.P. Stevens Corporation. After successfully doing so, he developed his own hosiery corporation, Americal, in 1968. Under his inspired leadership, Americal became a leading manufacturer of hosiery in this country and grew to include the sock division Peds.
While actively involved in his career, Bob always found time to reach out with love, kindness and generosity to those in his community. He served on many boards and committees for organizations such as Goodwill Industries, The United Way, The Children’s Center and Centenary United Methodist Church. He touched countless lives, most especially those of the family members who cherish him; his wife of fifty-six years, Marjorie Froeber of 1244 Arbor Road; their four children, Sarah Froeber, Judy Froeber Rizzo, Bob Froeber, Jr., and Joe Froeber; their sons and daughters-in-law, Jef Lambdin, Dan Rizzo, Elizabeth Froeber, and Tanya Froeber; and their grandchildren, Eric Nussbaumer, Jennifer Rizzo Medlin and Brooks Medlin, David and Kate Rizzo, Joseph and Libby Froeber, Raleigh, Dahlia and Jackson Froeber; and a great-grandson, Thomas Medlin.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service at Centenary United Methodist Church.
Willie T. Green
OXFORD -- Willie T. “Booty” Green, 55, of 4189 Shock Overton Road, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.
He was an employee of John Umstead Hospital Department of Correction. He was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church where he was a chairman of the deacon board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mac Timberlake Sr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Nadine Green of Columbia, Md.; and his mother, Gilberta Green of the home.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home.

Martha A. Hammie
OXFORD -- Martha Allen Hammie, of 123 Sycamore St., died Friday, March 1, 2002, at her residence. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lacy Joyner. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are four daughters, Lettye Smith of Mount Holly, N.J., Della Carmichael of Alexandria, Va., Dorthea Green and Margaret Wooten, both of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Allen C. Hammie of Bronx, N.Y., and Ralph Hammie of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Beatrice Farrington of Creedmoor.
The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the services at the church.

Joe A. Henderson
HENDERSON -- Joe Arthur “Coon” Henderson, 69, of 911 Arch St., died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Forest and Katherine Gooch Henderson.
He was a veteran of the United States Army receiving such honors as the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Brenda Peace.
Surviving are three sons, Joe Henderson Jr., James Henderson and Lee Henderson, all of Henderson; five sisters, Julia Thorpe, Alice Henderson, Joyce Williams, Royce Williams and Juanita Williams, all of Henderson; two brothers, Lee Henderson and William Henderson, both of Henderson; and one grandchild.

OXFORD -- Norman Hutcherson, 89, of 205 New College St., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Belton Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Anthony Cozart. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Person; two sons, Larry Bridges of Raleigh and Clarence Bridges of Charlotte; two daughters, Mary Helen Bridges and Gwendolyn Bridges, both of Oxford; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
