Georgia Mae Leonard Vernon
Georgia Mae Leonard Vernon, 86, of Blairsville, Ga., formerly of Winston-Salem, widow of Woodrow Wilson Vernon, died April 2 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville. She was born January 6, 1919, in Carroll County, Va., to the late Harrison Leonard and Dovia King Leonard. She was retired from the produce business and was a member of the House of Prayer Church in Blairsville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Billy and Ronnie Vernon; and three brothers, Harley, Joe and Everett Leonard.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Anderson and husband Harry of Blairsville; two grandchildren, Cass Vernon and Steven Anderson; five great-granddaughters, Ashlyn, Hannah and Haley Vernon and Madison and Hannah Anderson; three sisters, Agnus Shelton of Pilot Mountain, Dot Vernon and husband Hurley of Cana, Va., and Juanita Edwards of Cana, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, James and Helen Vernon of Lewisville, and Ethel Vernon of Cana, Va.
Funeral services were held at Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Eugene Gunter and Pastor Jerry Helton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Catherine Jo Pfaff Blankenship
Catherine Jo Pfaff Blankenship, 75, of Pfafftown died March 28 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 18, 1930, in Forsyth County to the late Edwin Bahnson and Lillian Florence Pfaff. She was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church for most of her life. She was in various church organizations and functions as well as Winston-Salem Women’s Traffic Club and other civic organizations over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay McKinley Blankenship.
Surviving are two sons, Randal C. Blankenship and wife Iris of Clemmons and Darryl J. Blankenship and wife Terri of Raleigh; and grandchildren Christopher, Eddie, Katrina, Ashley and Nicole Blankenship of Clemmons and Brandon and Megan King of Raleigh.
Funeral services were held at Pfafftown Christian Church, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mary Lou Blevins
Mary Lou Blevins, 73, of Winston-Salem died March 26 following a brief illness. She was delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Manley Blevins, on August 10, 1931, in Ashe County, and was a daughter of the late James Walter Blevins and the late Anna Beulah Shatley Blevins. Her lifelong passion was art, which she studied at Wake Forest University and Salem College.
Surviving are her children, Dawn Shamel Douglas of Tobaccoville, Lynne Shamel Vogel of Sullivan’s Island, S.C., Lauren Shamel Hutchens of Rural Hall and Christopher S. Shamel of Tobaccoville; grandchildren Robyne Vonsiatsky, James L. Douglas, Camryn Bounds, Lyndci Hutchens and Austin Hutchens; a great-grandchild, Redeker Vonsiatsky; sisters and brothers Helen Carmola of Winston-Salem, Polly Andrakakos of Silver Spring, Md., Howard Blevins of Winston-Salem, Alda Vanderling of Corona Del Mar, Calif., Melba Bookout of Cornelius, Martha Jennings of Lewisville, Wanda Egly of Newport Beach, Calif., and Willa Schlegel of Corona Del Mar, Calif.; a loving companion, John Chopko of Winston-Salem; and many other family members.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Tripp May officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Darrell Ray Everhart
Darrell Ray Everhart, 73, of Winston-Salem died March 27 at his home. He was born November 13, 1931, in Lexington to Ray C. Everhart and Sarah G. Everhart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary C. Everhart.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie Stanfield, and husband Vic of Clemmons; two sons, Ronnie Everhart and wife Martha of Clemmons and Jeff Everhart and wife Crystal of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Danny Baynes and April Scharff of Clemmons, Carey Hodges of Winston-Salem and Tiffany Wood of Lewisville; six great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a multitude of friends who kept him company during his retirement after 31 years of service with Western Electric in Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Bill Teague officiating.

Patricia Bays Haroski
Patricia Bays Haroski, 85, of Lewisville died December 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Cook County, Ill., to the late Peter Bays Sr. and Lillian Dudley Bays. She was a devout member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and founder of National Boss’ Day. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Edward Haroski; a son, Thomas Joseph Haroski; and a brother, David Bays.
Surviving are a grandson, Edward Haroski and wife Shellie of Lewisville; a granddaughter, Michelle Stewart of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Cameron Grace Haroski and Jackson Patrick Stewart; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hash of Winston-Salem; a brother, Peter Bays Jr. and wife Joanie of California; and a sister, Elizabeth White of Alaska.
Funeral services were held at Westlawn Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. Erich Thompson officiating.

Joe Bill Brim
Joe Bill Brim, 76, of Largo, Fla. died December 18 at home. He was born in Pilot Mountain and moved to Largo in 1993 from Clemmons. He worked for General Motors Corp. Credit Division for 32 years, retiring in 1984, and then retired from Ceridian Corp. in St. Petersburg in 2005. He was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church, was in the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines and was a former Elks member. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed bridge, golf and poker with his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. and Bessie Brim of Pilot Mountain.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Mary Lucille Brim; two daughters, Lynette Brooks of St. Petersburg and Barbara Louise Kahler of Largo; two granddaughters, Adrianne and Whitney Kahler, both of Largo; and a brother, Thomas Brim of Mount Airy.

Jasmine Tiana Phillips
Jasmine Tiana Phillips, 6, of Pfafftown died December 17 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A native of Winston-Salem, she was the daughter of William and Tammy Phillips of Pfafftown. She was a first-grade student at Downtown Elementary School and a member of New Birth Worship Center in East Bend, where she was an active member of the Youth Choir and NBWC Creative Expression dancers. She was also a cheerleader for the Pfafftown Packers and a dancer for Positive Image Performing Arts. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Bobbiette Miller Phillips.
Surviving are her mother and father, William Wilfred Phillips Jr. and Tammy Phillips of Pfafftown; her sister, Tamyka Gavone Darden-Phillips of the home; her grandparents, William W. and Carolyn Phillips Sr. of Winston-Salem; her grandparents, Robert and Carolyn Thornton of Roanoke Rapids; her grandfather, Joe Artis of Greensboro; uncles Jermaine Artis and wife Sonya of Reidsville, Christopher Artis and wife Mende of Greensboro and William Lowe Jr. and wife Tora of Winston-Salem; great-aunts Fannie Peeples of Winston-Salem, Catherine Coats of Washington, D.C., Treva Rainey and husband William of Capital Heights, Md., Sandra Miller-Jones and husband Lafayette of Winston-Salem, Camille Allen of Chesapeake, Va., Phyllis Peebles and husband Michael of Garysburg and Catherine Jefferies of Roanoke Rapids; great-uncle Ervin Phillips and wife Gwen of Winston-Salem; and a host of cousins, family and friends.
Funeral services were held at New Birth Worship Center with Dr. James L.E. Hunt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Howard Lee Johnson Sr.
Howard Lee Johnson Sr., 64, of Winston-Salem died December 18. He was born October 1, 1941, in Winston-Salem to the union of Charlie A. Johnson Sr. and Georgia Haywood Johnson Peoples. He worked for many years as a contractor and cement finisher, always taking pride in his work and his strong work ethic. He was also an avid golfer and loved the game. He was a member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served as an usher and attended Sabbath School. He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Darryl Wayne, Big Kenny and Little Kenny; and three siblings, Charlie A. Johnson Jr., Ella Mae Peak and Solomon Brown.
Surviving are his wife, Louvonia Glover Johnson; his children, Howard Johnson Jr. of Lumberton, Debra Williams and husband Thomas of Lewisville, Patrick Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., and Michael S. Johnson of the city; his stepchildren, Kathy Evans, Shelia Bowens and husband Michael, Archanel Rembert, all of Philadelphia, and Duke White of the home; Shezell Temple and Dewayne Temple of the city; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 10 stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine J. Marshall of the city; a brother, Ron T. Peoples of Raleigh; three brothers-in-law, Fred L. Marshall, Ralph Peak and Johnnel Wilson, all of the city; a sister-in-law, Carol Peoples of Raleigh; three close friends, Rochester Damon, Percy Caines and Jimmy Thacker; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Moses Edwards officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery.

David Paul Sheets
David Paul Sheets, 60, of Bermuda Run died December 18 of multiple myeloma at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was the the son of John and Bessie Mullins Sheets of Ocala, Fla. He worked for Peat Marwick Mitchell as a staff accountant and later became treasurer of Appalachian Resources in Mount Hope, W.Va. In 1972, he joined R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and spent more than 20 years in various positions at R.J. Reynolds, including chief financial officer of Planters LifeSavers Co. After retiring from R.J. Reynolds, he was chief financial officer of Liggett Tobacco in Durham, and then chief financial officer of Tri-Valley Growers in San Francisco, Calif. In 1998, he retired to Kiawah Island, S.C., and later moved to Sarasota, Fla. He loved spending time with his family on annual summer outings to Lake Sherwood, W.Va., and traveling the world with his wife and kids.
Surviving are his wife, Gail Kelley; his parents; his children, Kelly Thompson and husband Robert of Alpharetta, Ga.; Melissa Sheets of Clemmons; and James Sheets and wife Kathryn of Gaithersburg, Md.; his grandchildren, Graeson David Sheets and Avery James Sheets; his brothers, Mitchell Sheets and wife Susan of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; Clarence Sheets and wife Pat of Chula Vista, Calif; John Sheets and wife Teresa of St. Albans, W.Va.; Dale Sheets and wife Becky of Roanoke, Va.; Robert Sheets and wife Connie of Wilson; sisters Helen Samar and husband Kamal of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Marsha Reiniers and husband John of Spring Hill, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Lynn Gunnoe of Charleston, W.Va., Tony and Edna DiBianca of Winston-Salem, Tom and Anne Pierce of Bermuda Run and Robert and Joan Wimmer of Lake Norman; and his canine companions, Will and Sarah.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons Presbyterian Church.

Janet Bivens McDaniel
Janet Bivens McDaniel, 72, of Winston-Salem died December 22. She was born May 28, 1933, in Davie County. She retired from AT&T in 1989 after 33 years of service. She was a loving wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter F. Bivens.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Joe Cecil McDaniel of the home; her mother, Julia Ruth Sechrest Bivens of Cooleemee; a daughter, Dena M. Albright of Winston-Salem; two sons, Michael J. McDaniel and wife Jane of Winston-Salem and Keith McDaniel and wife Billie of King; three grandchildren, Crystal Shamblin and husband Dan and Brittany McDaniel and Korey Albright; two brothers, Ronnie Bivens and wife Gail of Cooleemee and Bill Bivens of Clemmons; a sister, Linda Nichols of Cleveland; and numerous friends.
Funeral services were held at Samaritan Baptist Church with Pastor Danny Smith officiating.

Helen LaBeur Kreidler
Helen LaBeur Kreidler, 72, of Lewisville died December 20 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was the daughter of David and Lillian LaBeur. She was a member of the “Red Hatters” and United Moravian Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Lynn Kramer of Langhorne, Pa.; son Richard Kreidler and wife Nancy of Lewisville; and grandchildren Thane and Garrett Kramer and Glen and Scot Kreidler.
A memorial service was held at Unity Moravian Church in Lewisville.

Everett Lane Quesinberry
Everett Lane Quesinberry, 80, of Mount Airy died December 22 at his home. He was born in Surry County on February 1, 1925, son of the late Bryant Quesinberry and Ernie Marshall Quesinberry.
Surviving are a daughter, Patty Puckett and husband Jimmy of Mooresville; a son, Daniel D. Quesinberry and wife Janice of Advance; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, E.E. Quesinberry of Norfolk, Va., and Bobby Quesinberry of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Skyline Memory Gardens with Rev. Bill Tucker officiating.

Loman Hughes Largen
Loman Hughes “Hootie” Largen, 86, of Winston-Salem died in his sleep December 23 at the home of his daughter, after several months of declining health. He was born March 30, 1919, in Carroll County, Va., to Posey A. and Cora A. Largen. He was a retired watch repairman from his family owned business - Largen Jewelers on North Trade Street in Winston-Salem. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army as a rifleman in the European Campaign. He was awarded the EAME Service Medal with Two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He loved his family, fishing, working on Volkswagens, woodworking, playing music, making things with his hands and watching old cowboy movies. He was of the Baptist and Moravian faiths. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Spaugh Largen, and a daughter, Barbara June Largen.
Surviving are his daughter, Bobbie Jean Sapp and husband Ernest of Clemmons; a son, Jerry Hughes Largen of Bennettsville, S.C.; a sister, Margaret Stone and husband Cameron of Asheville; four grandchildren, Shannon Todd Sapp and wife Tricia, Kelly Elizabeth Sapp and husband Bennett Pransky, Suzanne E. Largen (Felts) and Daniel V. Largen (Felts) and wife Aleena; a great-grandchild, Easton Ryanne Pransky; and his Friday night fish fry supper friends.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Bishop Robert Iobst and Rev. Dave Marcus officiating.

Lonnie Ray Whitaker
Lonnie Ray “Pops” Whitaker, 62, of Winston-Salem died December 22 at his home. He was born on September 16, 1943, in Surry County to Lonnie Gray and Viola Goins Whitaker. He was a self-employed auto mechanic. He graduated with honors from high school and served in the U.S. Army for 32 months during the Vietname War era, having served in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, L.G. Whitaker; and a son, Frank Robert Halter.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Kathleen Whitaker, whom he married on September 14, 1969; sons Lonnie Ray Whitaker Jr. and wife Gwen of Lexington and Joseph Christopher Whitaker and fiancee Shauna Maxfield of Winston-Salem; daughter-in-law Rosa Halter of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Frank Halter, Matthew Cross, Crystal Cross, Khali Davis and Kayden Whitaker; sisters Dorothy Dunakin of Ohio and Martha Morton and husband Dennis of Clemmons; a brother, Luther Whitaker and wife Harriet of Indiana; brother-in-law Gary Hauser and wife Julie of Burlington; sister-in-law Shirley Grier and husband Gerry of California; numerous nieces and nephews; and other beloved family.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Elder Roger Tise officiating. Burial followed at Woodland Cemetery.

Nancy Jane Gentry Adkins
Nancy Jane Gentry Adkins, 82, died December 20 at the Lutheran Home of Winston-Salem. She was born in Kernersville on November 23, 1923, grew up in Mount Airy and lived most of her adult life in Northern Virginia. She had an entrepreneurial and independent spirit and was self-employed with her own businesses until she retired. She was a caring wife and mother and will be missed very much. She was preceded in death by her son, Jarrell F. Adkins Jr., “Jay”; her mother and father, Robert Ford and Carrie M. Gentry; and brothers and sisters, Robert, Wayne, Lucille G. McMillan, Paul, Charles and Helen G. Carlisle.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Jarrell F. Adkins, “Jeff,” of Clemmons; her daughters, Judith A. Thompson and husband John B. of Winston-Salem and Rebecca Ann Adkins of Summerville, S.C.; her grandchildren, Jane T. Ciener and husband Greg of Winston-Salem and J. Christopher Thompson and wife Suellen of Kernersville; four great-grandchildren, Caroline, Katharine Jane and Elizabeth Ciener and Macy E. Thompson; her sisters, Era G. Scott of Mount Airy, Billie G. Wilkins of Boonville and Nellie G. McHone of Collinsville, Va.; her sister-in-law, Geneva Gentry of Rural Hall; her “special sister,” Kathy Mooney of Prattville, Ala.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Elkin.

Ruth L. Shinker
Ruth L. Shinker, 88, of Winston-Salem died December 23 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born September 29, 1917, in Pomeroy, Iowa, to the late John and Mata LeWarne. She attended business college in Missouri and then moved to Washington, D.C., where she married her childhood sweetheart, Virgil Shinker, in 1940. In addition to being a wife and mother, she worked for several years as a secretary at Catholic University and at White Oak Children’s Home in the D.C. area. In 1980, they retired to Port Charlotte, Fla., where she lived for 23 years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995 and her four brothers.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol Shinker of San Francisco, Calif.; a son, Warren Shinker of Clemmons; three grandsons, Matthew of Beavercreek, Ohio, Christopher of Powell, Ohio and Brian of High Point; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Cameron of Powell.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons with Rev. Brian Cook officiating.

Edward Cameron Timmermann
Edward Cameron Timmermann, 78, died November 4 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 7, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Edward Conrad and Willie Cameron Timmermann. He served in the United States Army and later owned Timmermann Insurance Service, Inc. and Timmermann Insurance Service, Inc. of Virginia. He was an avid fan and supporter of Wake Forest University and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He served as a council member of the Village of Sugar Mountain. Due to his character and actions, he was highly respected and admired throughout the community by his employees, customers, friends, and colleagues.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Timmermann of the home; a daughter, Pati Timmermann of Franklin County, VA; two sons, Edward C. Timmermann, Jr. of Clemmons and his fiancé, Eileen Sommer; and Billy Lee Timmermann and wife Jane of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Jessica Ames and husband Kyle, Jonathan Lee Timmermann, and Julie Bernice Timmermann; a great-grandchild, Willow Ames.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Thiel College, 75 College Avenue Greenville, PA 16125.

Peggy Randolph Wheeler
Peggy Randolph Wheeler, 64, died at Silas Creek Manor on November 7. She was born July 4, 1942, in Yancey County to James and Jeannette Buchanan Randolph. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Tamara and Amanda Wheeler.
Surviving are two sons, Tommy Wheeler of Clemmons and Darrell Wheeler and wife Linnley of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren William Blaine Wheeler and Christian Jonathon Wheeler; a brother, Terrell Randolph of Charlotte; and a sister, Iris Ferguson of Charlotte.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to the Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem NC 27104.

Florence Wood Weaver
Florence Wood Weaver, 84, of Clemmons died November 5 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 1, 1922, in Forsyth County to the late Albert M. and Effie Looper Wood. She spent most of her life as a homemaker after working at AT&T. She was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church before moving to Advent Moravian Church.
Surviving are a son, Michael Gray Weaver of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Carol Jane Weaver of Arcadia; three grandchildren, Jason Gray Weaver, Bradford Gray Weaver and Jodie Weaver Finley; and a great-granddaughter, Jennie Finley.
Funeral services were held at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Tripp May and Rev. Dan Conrad officiating. Entombment followed at the mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Mallard Ridge Assisted Living, 9420 N. Hwy 150, Clemmons, NC 27012.
