Sidney `Joe' Stenson
McVILLE, N.D. -- Sidney ``Joe" Stenson, 91, McVille, died Friday, May 10, 1997, at home.
Sidney Stenson was born Nov. 23, 1905, the son of Severin and Julia (Flaagan) Stenson, in McVille, where he attended school. He married Stella Foley Oct. 14, 1938, in Grand Forks. They lived in McVille, where they farmed and operated a trucking service. He sold the trucking service in 1992 after 56 years. Stella Stenson died Jan. 22, 1986.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna (Ron) Gravelle, Grand Forks; a son, Dennis, Monterey, Calif.; and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Hazel and Grace; and brothers, Ted, Roy and Glenn.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday in McVille Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Stanley-Iverson Funeral Home, McVille, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: McVille Cemetery.
Martin Hedlund
ROSEAU, Minn. -- Martin Hedlund, 81, Roseau, died Thursday, May 8, 1997, in St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Martin Emil Hedlund was born Aug. 22, 1915, the son of Emil and Bertha (Larson) Hedlund, in Stafford Township, Roseau County, Minn., where he helped with the cattle and farming. He joined the U.S. Army in January 1942. He then returned to Roseau. He married Alice Hedman April 19, 1945, in Roseau. They farmed in Stafford Township from 1957 to 1995.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, JoAnn (Robert) Bell, Fulton, Md., Jeanette Hedlund, Duluth, Minn., Joyce (Phillip) Olson, Pitt, Minn., and June (Roland) Wensloff, Roseau; a son, Robert (Yvonne), Strathcona, Minn; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marie Nelson, Roseau, and Christine Salo, Warroad, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a son, Emil; a daughter, Janice; a great-granddaughter; three brothers; and a sister.
Services: 2 p.m. today in Bethel-Stafford Lutheran Church, Roseau.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bethel-Stafford Cemetery (Helgeson, Roseau).
John Boe
John Boe, 70, R.R. 2, East Grand Forks, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, in Richfield, Minn.
John R. Boe was born Sept. 10, 1926, the son of John Sr. and Helma (Tvedt) Boe, in Grand Forks. He graduated from Central High School, Grand Forks. He married Dorothy Harney Nov. 12, 1950, in East Grand Forks. They lived in Grand Forks, where he worked for the Grand Forks Herald as a press foreman until retiring in 1986. Dorothy Boe died April 28, 1981.
He is survived by a daughter, Jan Boe, Richfield; a son, Jon, Rapid City, S.D.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jay; and brothers, Rolf and Bernie.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday in Stennes Funeral Home Chapel, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Kathryn DeMaine
CAVALIER, N.D. -- Kathryn DeMaine, 88, Cavalier, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, in Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier.
Kathryn Matthiasson was born Sept. 8, 1908, the daughter of John and Stephanie (Olafson) Matthiasson, in Gardar, N.D. She attended school there and graduated from Milton (N.D.) High School. She attended Mayville (N.D.) State Teachers College. She taught school in Bathgate, N.D. She married Paul DeMaine June 14, 1932, in Neche, N.D. They farmed in Bathgate and Neche. She taught school in Glasston, N.D. and Cavalier. In 1960, they moved to Cavalier. Paul DeMaine died March 27, 1978.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Neil) Hanson, Hamilton, N.D.; sons, Donald, Cavalier, and Dennis (Carol), Battle Ground, Wash.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Olive Christianson, Grafton, N.D. and Allie Holand, Park River, N.D.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; and three sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday in United Lutheran Church, Cavalier.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Cavalier Cemetery.
Arvilla Kelm
BEMIDJI -- Arvilla Kelm, 73, Bemidji, died Thursday, May 8, 1997, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.
Arvilla H. Kelm was born Jan. 2, 1924, the daughter of Richard and Elvina (Hollander) Kelm, in Bemidji. She graduated from Bemdiji High School. She married Coleman Johnson Oct. 10, 1944, in Los Angeles. She lived there until 1974, when she moved to Bemidji.
She is survived by sons, Roger (Cindy), Mission Viejo, Calif. and Mark (Katie), Albuquerque; three grandchildren; and a brother, Jack, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; and a sister.
Services: Graveside services were held in Alaska Township, Beltrami County, Minn.
