Evelyn J. Hanson

CAVALIER, N.D. -- Evelyn J. Hanson, 79, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Homestad Place South, Benson, Minn.

Evelyn Joy Skrogstad was born April 22, 1919, the daughter of Hans and Marion (Olson) Skrogstad, in East Alma Township, Cavalier County, N.D., where she attended school. She married Julius M. Hanson on Feb. 4, 1942, in Sedan, Minn. He died in 1986. She lived in Murdock, Minn., where she worked as a Home Health Aid.

She is survived by sons, Dennis (Barb), East Grand Forks, and Richard (Elaine), St. Joseph, Minn.; five grandchildren; and a brother, Melvin, Elk River, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard; and sisters, Irene Tollefson, Myrtle Nygard and Hellen Widness.

Services: Were held in Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Swift Falls, Minn.

Burial: Rolling Forks Cemetery, Pope County, Minn.

Gina I. Wall

BOTTINEAU, N.D. -- Gina I. Wall, 87, Bottineau, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, in a Bottineau hospital.

Gina I. Persson was born Nov. 4, 1911, the daughter of Per and Gunhild (Nickelson) Persson, in Bottineau, where she attended school. She married Ruben Wall on Sept. 25, 1937, in Minot. They purchased a farm in the Turtle Mountains, near Bottineau. They retired from farming in 1977 and moved into Bottineau in 1996. She worked as a cook for St. Andrew's Hospital, Bottineau during the 1960's.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Betty Gilje, Grand Forks, and Gertrude Indvik, Bottineau; a son, Ronald, Bottineau; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Helmer, Rugby, N.D., and a sister, Thelma Dalen, Bottineau.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nero Funeral Home Chapel, Bottineau.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 10: 30 a.m. until services Wednesday in the chapel.

Burial: Manger Lutheran Cemetery, Bottineau.

Mildred Vining

McHenry, N.D. -- Mildred Vining, 80, McHenry, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in Central Dakota Nursing Home, Jamestown.

Mildred Syverson was born June 12, 1918, the daughter of David and Cora (Hoppwod) Syverson, in Glenfield, N.D. She moved with her family in 1926 to Courtenay, N.D. She attended school in Glenfield and Courtenay. She married Dick Vining on Feb. 7, 1935, in Carrington, N.D. They farmed on the Vining Homestad in Florence Township, Foster County, McHenry. Dick Vining died Dec. 31, 1987. She moved into McHenry. She has resided in Central Dakota Nursing Home since April 1998.

She is survived by daughters, Winnie (Al) Borah, Aneta, N.D., Elaine (Ray) Willows, Williston, Lois (James) Heyen, Walcott, N.D., and Marie (Jerry) Topp, Fargo; a son, David (JoAnn), Jamestown; a daughter-in-law, Marlys Vining, Jamestown; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Harrison, Spiritwood, N.D.

She was preceded in death by a son, Darrel; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; four brothers; and four sisters.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McHenry.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Burial: Bethlehem Cemetery, McHenry.

Marlys K. Stangeland

CARRINGTON, N.D. -- Marlys K. Stangeland, 58, Kensal, N.D., formerly of Carrington, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at home.

Marlys Kay Pierce was born Oct. 27, 1940, the daughter of Melvin and Emma (Glover) Pierce, in Carrington, where she attended school. She married Carl Stangeland on June 29, 1957, in Carrington. They lived and farmed in Kensal.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Gary, Garland, Texas, and Cory, Carrington; a daughter, Pam Short, West Fargo; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; her mother; and a brother, Charles, Carrington.

She was preceded in death by a son, Curtis; and her father.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Tuesday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kensal.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Burial: James River Cemetery, Carrington.

Bernard 'Ben' Uhlenkamp

STARKWEATHER, N.D. -- Bernard "Ben" Uhlenkamp, 98, Starkweather, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, in Towner County Medical Center, Cando, N.D.

Bernard Uhlenkamp was born April 8, 1900, the son of Bernard and Anna Uhlenkamp, in Meir Grove, Minn. He attended school in Minnesota. He worked to Calio-Egeland, N.D. area in 1920. He worked for farmers and later began farming near Starkweather. He farmed until 1990, when he retired.

He is survived by a brother, John, Starkweather.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Henry and Karl; and sisters, Mary Gangl and Annie Ebensteiner.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Assumption of Mary Catholic Church, Starkweather.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. today, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in the church, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Assumption of Mary Catholic Cemetery.

Donald L. Middleton

Donald L. Middleton, 61, 1502 14th Ave. S., died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Altru Hospital.

Donald Lyle Middleton was born March 26, 1937, the son of D. J. and Evelyn (Leathers) Middleton, in Hallock, Minn. He graduated from Larimore High School in 1959. He worked as an electrician in Grand Forks for 41 years. He worked for Comeau Electric of Grand Forks. He married Jean Johnson on April 18, 1959, in Bagley.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Jan (LeRoy) Kurtyka, Julie (Randy) Keegan and JoEllen (Steve) Paintner, all of Grand Forks, and Jinell, Fargo; seven grandchildren; a brother, Douglas, Roseburg, Ore., and a sister, Marlene (Butch) Hastings, Crookston.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, Amundson Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore.

Raymond L. Hanson

YORK, N.D. -- Raymond L. Hanson, 74, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of York, died Nov. 17, 1998, in Mesa.

Raymond L. Hanson was born May 3, 1924, the son of Roy and Anna (Strand) Hanson, in York, where he graduated from high school in 1942. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1946. He attended UND. He married Vera Nelson in February 1949, in Cando, N.D. He worked at Baker Electric Cooperative, Cando, and transferred to Rugby, N.D., in 1953. In 1958, they moved to Rolla, N.D. He worked for Baker Electric for 36 years. He retired in 1984. In 1986, they moved to Mesa, spending summers in Rolla.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Jeffrey, Bangkok, Thailand; brothers, Kenneth, Dover, N.H., and Virgil, Grapeview, Wash.; and sisters, LaVaughn (Creighton) Knutson and Adelyne (Clyde) Nelson, both of Puyallup, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Rolla; and were held in Mesa.

David Delfs

BINFORD, N.D. -- David Delfs, 19, Binford, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at his farm near Binford.

David Marcus Delfs was born April 23, 1979, the son of Robert and Rebecca (Simonson) Delfs, in Jamestown. He grew up near Binford, and graduated from high school in 1997. He was attending North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton, majoring in electrical technology.

He is survived by his parents, Binford; a brother, Mike, at home; a sister, Leslie, at home; and his grandmother, Phyllis Simonson, Cooperstown.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Binford.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Binford Cemetery.

Valeria Vad

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Valeria Vad, 92, Thief River Falls, died Sunday at Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Valeria Ann Reller was born Sept. 6, 1906, the daughter of John Benjamin and Agnes (Braun) Reller, in Mayhew Lake, Minn., where she attended school. In 1915, they moved to Silverton Township, Stearns County, Minn., where she continued school. She married Gustav Vad on Nov. 26, 1929, in Thief River Falls. They lived in Thief River Falls, where she worked at Bjorkman's, Porter's Eat Shop and Land O' Lakes. In the early 1960s, they moved to Fargo. They returned to Thief River Falls in 1977.

She is survived by a son, Duane (Jayne), Breckenridge, Minn.; daughters, Delores Owen, Bellingham, Wash., and Darlene (Larry) Sedivy, Owatonna, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a sister, Cyrilla Rodekuhr, Thief River Falls; and a daughter-in-law, Marlys Vad, Bottineau, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Darrol; a son-in-law, Morris Owen; brothers, Marcus and Edward; and sisters, Coletta Rasmussen, Harriet Christianson and Francis Nesland.

Services: 11: 30 a.m. Thursday, St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery.

Elsie Goertzen

LANGDON, N.D. -- Elsie Goertzen, 86, Langdon, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Maple Manor Nursing Home, Langdon, where she had lived since 1986.

Elsie Toews was born Oct. 31, 1912, the daughter of Isaac and Maria (Wiens) Toews, in Munich, N.D. She grew up and attended school in the Alsen-Munich area. She married Jacob Goertzen on Dec. 10, 1938, in Alsen, N.D. They lived in Bisbee and Alsen. Jacob Goertzen died Jan. 9, 1983. In 1983 she moved to Grand Forks.

She is survived by daughters, Peggy (Curtis) Gray, Seattle, Fran (Douglas) Harder, Marion, Ohio, and Irene (David) Pede, Grand Forks; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Emma Johnston, Grand Forks, and Mary Spenst and Anna Krahn, both of Langdon.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Isaac, John and Jake; and sisters, Stella Meyer and Lydia Ballweg.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Maple Manor Nursing Home Chapel.

Burial: Alsen Cemetery (Brooks, Langdon).

Sister Therese LaChance

CROOKSTON -- Sister Therese LaChance, 79, Crookston, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at home.

Cerisa Rose LaChance was born March 23, 1919, the daughter of Peter and Antoinette (Parenteau) LaChance, in Louisville, Minn., and lived in Red Lake County, Minn., until she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph on Sept. 7, 1936. She had graduated in May that year from St. Joseph's Academy. After her reception of the religious garb and her name as Sister Therese of St. Joseph on March 14, 1937, she traveled to France for her novitiate training at the motherhouse in Bourg. She pronounced first vows on Sept. 19, 1939, and returned to the United States to begin her teaching mission in her community's schools at Kilkenny, Park Rapids, Crookston, Minneapolis and West St. Paul, Minn. She earned a bachelor's degree in history at the College of St. Catherine, and a master of religious education degree from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind. From 1960 to 1971,she served at St. Joseph's Provincial House as formation directress of the Sisters of St. Joseph, following this mission with adult education work at Greenbush, Minn. She continued this kind of work at the Indian Mission, Dunseith, N.D., serving as religious education coordinator from 1973 to 1977. From 1977 to 1994, she ministered at Greenbush and Leo as parish minister, and then retired to Marywood Residence, Crookston.

She is survived by a sister, Beatrice Fortier, Moorhead; and brothers, Lester, Columbia Heights, Minn., and Armand, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by four brothers.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Marywood Residential Community Chapel, Crookston.

Visitation: 11 to 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Crookston (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
